WEATHER and SEASONS for lower primary students

by Richard Swindail

Page 2: WEATHER and SEASONS - geographyfocus.com€¦ · WEATHER WALL - you might want to do this as a class exercise first gathering the weather !information from the school’s own weather

︎! WEATHER WORDS - introduce students ! to the different words that are used to ! describe weather and get them to place ! them against the main aspects of weather ! that are described in a weather report.

︎! TODAY’S WEATHER - students make their ! own observations about the day’s weather, ! perhaps discuss them as a class and then ! put the word together as a statement of the ! day’s weather.

︎! WEATHER AFFECTS WHAT WE DO NO.1 ! - students get to understand how weather

! affects them. They decide on what people !are likely to do on a rainy day or a sunny day. A class discussion could focus on what activities ! can be done indoor and outdoors (e.g. indoor sports facilities)

︎! WEATHER AFFECTS WHAT WE DO NO.2 - students can draw pictures of what they or their ! family do on rainy and sunny days or can write the information.

︎! WEATHER WALL - you might want to do this as a class exercise first gathering the weather ! information from the school’s own weather station, the media or the Bureau of Meteorology ! website (in Australia - www.bom.gov.au) for each day of the week. Provided are large copies of ! the thermometers, rain gauge and weather symbols for you to make a wall display or screen ! them to a whiteboard. Follow this by getting the students to do their own. With temperature and ! rainfall figures students are in effect !learning to draw simple column graphs. The symbols they ! can simply circle or colour in the appropriate one/s.

︎! WEATHER MAP SYMBOLS - symbols commonly used in the media to describe the weather.

︎! MY TELEVISION WEATHER MAP - this exercise introduces student to the idea that weather is ! different from place to place. Weather information can be given to students or they can get it ! from the media themselves and then draw the appropriate symbol on the weather map for each ! city or town.

︎! A number of posters are also provided that you may want to increase to A3 size on a ! photocopier to place around the classroom.

! SUMMER/WINTER WORKSHEETS - a discussion of activities students do during summer and ! winter could be had and then students can write in (or draw) the various activities they do ! during each season.
