As we hear today in St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, “I consider the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us.” But these are easy words to mouth. What do we say to the parents who have lost their child to violence or drug addiction? What do we say to the family who has lost a loved one in the ongoing battle against the radical elements of Islam? What do we say to a child whose father and/or mother might be addicted to drugs or in prison? Again, we turn to St. Paul and his letter to the Romans: “We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now.” Paul speaks of creation groaning because creation realizes that it must be set free from the limitations imposed upon it by sinful humanity. And then Paul says we groan with respect to ourselves longing to be redeemed from our fractured condition. Pay close attention next week as Paul’s letter to the Romans continues in this vein to say that it is the Spirit that comes to our aid in our weakness. For in our inability to see the goal to which Jesus Christ leads us, “we do not know how to pray as we ought,” i.e., we really do not know what to ask for. And thus “the Spirit himself intercedes for us with inexpressible groanings.”

WAIT AND HOPE Deacon Terrence Collins

Wait and hope. This simple phrase might well describe the stance of the Christian who hears the Parable of the Sower. Waiting in this context is not a passive act, as if all we need to do is sit around and let God do all the work. Rather we ought to move and act in the world in the knowledge that the Kingdom of Heaven has in fact been inaugurated in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Those who are watchful waiters will indeed trust that God’s creation has been restored in Christ. The seed has been planted. If we are rich soil, “one who hears the word and understands it,” then we will live in cooperation with the plan God has inaugurated. We will be free to act boldly in a world that urges caution. We are tempted to lose hope. Violence and drug addiction seem to reign in the city where we live. A spirit of division seems to have taken hold of our country. Terror, persecution, and the renewed threat of nuclear confrontation are rampant throughout the world. While it is natural to ask why these evils should exist and appropriate to seek means to eradicate them, we must not lose hope. Also, please notify us if the person you put on the prayer list for healing has improved so that we can remove their name from the list. Names are removed after one month if we don’t hear from you.

WHAT DID POPE FRANCIS SAY?

“Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the ‘peripheries’ in need of the light of the Gospel.”

THANK YOU to those members of our parish c o m m u n i t y , a l o n g with volunteers from other

communities who served/and or brought food for approximately 1578 meals and 3316 lunches during the month of June. In addition to serving food, we handed out clothing and hygiene kits to at least 203 for people in need. We had 156 food pantry appointments providing food for 348 people. It takes many hands to do the service that we do for the poor here at St. Vincent’s.

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Thomas Merton Thoughts in Solitude

How to Check Out a Book from the Father Bill Library A reminder that we do have a library where items may be checked out. Here’s how to use it and how to check out a book:

♦ Browse the shelves to find a book. There is also a spreadsheet of the book titles in the collection under the List of Library Books sign. If you would like to receive a copy of the spreadsheet then email Jackie Hittner [email protected]

♦ Want to check out a book? Pull the checkout card found in the back of the book. Print your name on the first available line and the date you checked out the book. Put the card in the black container next to the “Put Checkout Cards Here” sign. When you are finished with the book then put the checkout card back in the book and place the book next to the “Return Books Here” sign.
