LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters, As we gather in worship this weekend, we commemorate the 300th Anniversary of the birth of the founder of not only our beautiful “Jewel of the California Missions” but also the great evangelizer of “Alta Califor-nia” and Padre Presidente of the California Missions, Blessed Junipero Serra.

Fr. Serra was born in Petra, Majorca, Spain on November 24, 1713. On November 14, 1730, he entered the Franciscan order and took the name “Junipero” in honor of Saint Juniper who had also been a Francis-can and a companion of St. Francis. As a young scholar he eventually received a doctorate in theology and was known as an engaging teaching and powerful preacher.

In 1749 he was missioned by his order to Mexico City where he taught theology at the College of San Fer-nando de Mexico. The story is told that on traveling by foot from the east coast of Mexico to Mexico City, he was bitten by a snake and suffered from it throughout his life, though he continued to make his journeys on foot whenever necessary. In time, he requested a transfer to the Sierra Gorda Indian Missions some 90 miles north of Santiago de Querétaro, where he spent about nine years. In 1768, Fr. Serra was appointed su- perior of a band of 15 Franciscans who were missioned to take over the evangelization efforts in Baja and Alta California following the suppres- sion of the Jesuit order. On March 12, 1768, Serra embarked from the Pacific port of San Blas on his way to the Californias. Early in the year 1769, he accompanied Governor Gaspar de Portalà on his expedition to Alta California. When the par-ty reached San Diego on July 1, Fr. Serra stayed behind to start the Mission San Diego de Alcalà, the first of the 21 California missions.

Fr. Serra moved to the area that is now Monterey in 1770, and found-ed Mission San Carlos Borroméo de Carmelo. He remained there as “Father Presidente” of the Alta Cali- fornia missions. In 1771, Fr. Serra relocated the mission to Carmel, which became known as “Mission Carmel” and served as his headquarters. Under his presidency were founded Mission San Antonio de Pad-ua, Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, our own beloved Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San Francisco de Asís, Mission Santa Clara de Asís, and Mission San Buenaventura.

During the American Revolutionary War, Fr. Serra took up a collection from his mission parishes through-out California. The total money collected amounted to roughly $ 137, but the money was sent to General George Washington!

During the remaining three years of his life he visited the missions from San Diego to San Francisco, travel-ing more than 600 miles in the process, in order to confirm, by special delegation of the Holy See, all who had been baptized. He suffered intensely from his crippled leg, yet he would use no remedies. He con-firmed 5,309 persons, who, with but few exceptions, were Indians (“neophytes”) converted during the 14 years from 1770.

On August 28, 1784, at the age of 70, Fr. Junipero Serra died at Mission San Carlos Borromeo. He is bur-ied there under the sanctuary floor.

It is to be noted with great pride that the chapel in our historic Mission, built in 1782, is thought to be the oldest standing building in California. Known as “Father Serra’s Church,” it has the distinction of being the

only remaining church in which Fr. Serra is known to have celebrated the sacraments of the Church. Our records show that he presided over the confirmations of 213 people on October 12 and October 13, 1783.

Fr. Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988.

As members of the historic mother Church of our Diocese, we take great pride in marking the 300th Anni-versary of our founder, Blessed Junipero Serra. May his motto, “Always forward, never backwards!” be an inspiration to all of us as we live our faith with the same courage and conviction that filled the heart of Blessed Serra with such zeal for the Gospel of Christ.

Beginning our new week in Christ, may we commend to the loving mercy of our God all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they be at peace.

Always forward! Msgr. Art

Honoring our Veterans

In honor of Veterans Day, the Kindergarten Read-iness class at Mission Basilica School enjoyed a morning with MBS Athletic Director, Lieutenant Pat Forster. Coach Forster shared photos of his time in the armed forc-es and also taught the students how to stand at atten-tion and salute. The young stu-dents were very respectful and en-joyed hearing Lt. Forster's stories. They were especially intrigued that Coach Forster had a pet monkey while in the service. Thank you to all the veterans, we proudly salute you. At MBS we are committed to academic excellence rooted in Catholic values and traditions. For a tour of the school and additional information, please contact the school office at 234-1385, ext. 2.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS SPIRIT 2013

♦ Please help us bring the Christmas Spirit to the incarcerated men, women, minors, their families and loved ones by donating Christmas cards and stamps.

♦ Last year, Catholic Detention Ministry passed out nearly 7,000 Christmas cards with stamped envelopes to inmates and minors incarcerated in the Orange County jails and juvenile facilities.

♦ To keep the Spirit alive this year we need more Christmas cards and first class or “Forever” stamps. ♦ The cards should reflect our love for Jesus through the celebration of his Holy birth. Please mail or bring the cards and stamps to us at:

Office of Restorative Justice/Catholic Detention Ministry 1820 W. Orangewood Ave., Suite 101 Orange CA 92868

Your generous support is greatly appreciated. For more information about us, check out our web site: www.rcbo.org/restore.

PREGUNTA DE REFLEXION DE LA SEMANA

Declaración de la Parroquia de la Misión

MENSAJE DE LA SEMANA: Para terminar y como colofón del Año Litúrgico, la Comunidad Cristiana celebra la solemnidad de JESUCRISTO, REY DEL UNIVER-SO. ¡Cristo ayer, hoy y siempre!

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Dn 1:1-6, 8-20; Dn 3:52-56; Lc 21:1-4 Martes: Dn 2:31-45; Dn 3:57-61; Lc 21:5-11 Miércoles: Dn 5:1-6, 13-14, 16-17, 23-28; Dn 3:62-67; Lc 21:12-19 Jueves: Dn 6:12-28; Dn 3:68-74; Lc 21:20-28 Día de Acción de Gracias—sugerencia: Sir 50:22-24; Sal 145 (144):2-11; 1 Cor 1:3-9; Lc 17:11-19 Viernes: Dn 7:2-14; Dn 3:75-81; Lc 21:29-33 Sábado: Rom 10:9-18; Sal 19 (18):8-11; Mt 4:18-22 Domingo: Is 2:1-5; Sal 122 (121):1-9; Rom 13:11-14; Mt 24:37-44

Siempre adelante! Mons. Art
