LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR

Dear Brothers and Sisters, December is the time for expressing the hope and strengthening the dreams that will carry us through the next year. Advent is the way we as church express our hopes. Prophetic visions, prayers and songs calling for the Lord to come do help us to hope profoundly. Advent allows us to do what most others do in Decem-ber—but to see in the coming Lord the answer to our dreams. In our Catholic tradition, keeping Advent means singing the songs of expectation, of our hopes and longing, before we enter into the full-throated praise of Christmas carols. Here are a few lines from our tradition on what Advent is about. “Advent has a twofold character: as a season to prepare us for Christmas when Christ’s first coming is remembered; as a season when that remembrance directs the mind and the heart to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time. Advent is thus a period for devout and joyful expectation.” (General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, #39) Thomas Merton, in his book Seasons of Celebration, reviewed the ways Saint Bernard of Clairvaux ap-proached these comings of Christ. The first advent was Christ’s birth. The other will be at the end of time. Faith in these two stimulates recognition of a third, the advent of Christ in our church now, today. Viewed from this perspective, the Advent liturgy, with its scriptures, prayers and songs, is neither a romantic return to the Old Testament while we wait for the baby at Bethlehem, nor is it an exercise in expressing hope for an ever-receding end of time. The Advent liturgy is neither nostalgic nor illusory. When we take the tradi-tion and enter it fully, we become Advent, the people in and through whom Christ comes. Beginning our new week and this Advent season of Hope in Christ, let us commend to the mercy and love of the Lord, all those who have gone before us in faith. May they be at peace. Always forward, Msgr. Art

DECEMBER 8TH Since this year, December 8th, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Con-ception falls on a Sunday of Advent which takes priority in our liturgi-cal calendar, the celebration of the Solemnity will be moved to Monday, December 9th. However, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated. In other words, the Solemnity is NOT a ho-ly day of obligation this year. Mass-es will be celebrated at the usual daily times, 7:00 AM in the Serra Chapel and 8:30 AM in the Basilica.

KICK OFF GATHERING: “Family, Faith, Fun” ---Christian Family Movement (CFM)

The Christian Family Movement (CFM) is for families of all ages, from newly married to empty nesters! Families meet in small groups of five to seven families. Adult family members attend the meetings which are held in each other’s homes and follow a program that offers friendship, support and social action for today’s active families. Children are encouraged to participate in the family actions and activities that flow from these meetings, including periodic social gatherings for all the families in the group. The small group meets from September through May at which time the families are invited to join a new group. (This special feature of CFM allows families over a period of time, to build friendship and support with many families in the parish.) At the kick-off gathering you will have an opportunity to

learn about CFM and to sign up for a small group that will begin meeting in the February. So, if you are newly married, an active young family, or empty nester, you are welcome to participate. WHEN: FRIDAY, JANUARY 10--- 7:30 to 9 PM at the home of Liz and Bob Costello. For registration and directions to their home, please contact Liz

and Bob at [email protected] or 949-309-9041.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS SPIRIT 2013

♦ Please help us bring the Christmas Spirit to the incarcerated men, women, minors, their families and loved ones by donating Christmas cards and stamps.

♦ Last year, Catholic Detention Ministry passed out nearly 7,000 Christmas cards with stamped envelopes to inmates and minors incarcerated in the Orange County jails and juvenile facilities.

♦ To keep the Spirit alive this year we need more Christmas cards and first class or “Forever” stamps. ♦ The cards should reflect our love for Jesus through the celebration of his Holy birth. Please mail or bring the cards and stamps to us at:

Office of Restorative Justice/Catholic Detention Ministry 1820 W. Orangewood Ave., Suite 101 Orange CA 92868

Your generous support is greatly appreciated. For more information about us, check out our web site: www.rcbo.org/restore.

VIII Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano

estamos llamados a movernos “siempre adelante”.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: Is 4:2-6; Sal 122 (121):1-9; Mt 8:5-11 Martes: Is 11:1-10; Sal 72 (71):1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Lc 10:21-24 Miércoles: Is 25:6-10a; Sal 23 (22):1-6; Mt 15:29-37 Jueves: Is 26:1-6; Sal 118 (117):1, 8-9, 19-21, 25-27a; Mt 7:21, 24-27 Viernes: Is 29:17-24; Sal 27 (26):1, 4, 13-14; Mt 9:27-31 Sábado: Is 30:19-21, 23-26; Sal 147 (146):1-6; Mt 9:35 — 10:1 Domingo: Is 11:1-10; Sal 72 (71):1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17; Rom 15:4-9; Mt 3:1-12
