We want Village Link to stay free of charge to
residents and we want our advertising costs to
stay low to local small businesses. Sadly, despite
receiving some donations we still have a regular
annual shortfall of £1,200 (£200 per edition).
The only costs that Village Link incurs is for
printing – but they are high costs, and whilst
our printers have tried to keep them down,
some increase has been necessary in recent
years. We have investigated other printing
suppliers and found that the charges from our
supplier are reasonable.
As a team (all volunteers), we have considered
many ways of cutting costs ... we could go
100% digital .... go 100% black & white ....
reduce frequency ... reduce size … increase
advertising rates … seek sponsors.
Before doing any of these things we want to
ask YOU our readers if you can help out by
making a voluntary donation. If just one in
three of our 900 households donated
£4, we would cover the shortfall for
one year.
So please, help us keep this community
resource going and support local businesses
by keeping their costs low, DONATE
TODAY! You can donate online via our new
Just Giving page at:
https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/villagelink
or you can write a cheque to Village Link and
post it to any of the editorial team.
Thank you for your support.
We need your help
With apologies to Cottesbrooke—we have used your
lovely photo of Village Link being delivered by several
four-legged friends for our appeal, you will find it
again inside, along with the intended caption!

Guilsborough-on-Sea floats our boat!
The seaside theme of this year’s Guilsborough Festival inspired some very creative flower displays at the Church. From the colourful seaside scene featuring a lighthouse and beachhuts (doubling as door stops) from the KnitWits, to our own Fish’n’Chips served in cones made from Village Link newsletters, the British Legion’s moving poppy memorabilia and the Brownies’ charming
‘Seaside in a jar’ display, there was something for everyone. These are just a few of the many displays that delighted residents and visitors alike.
Meanwhile, once the Women’s Tour had passed through the village, preceded by police motorbikes lights flashing and engines revving, visitors settled back to enjoy the brass band, sandpit play area, craft stalls and ever-popular Punch & Judy, and Scrufts with “Best
in Show” won by Jackie and Reggie. The weather just about played ball, and the whole event was declared a success. See page 10 for the Guilsborough Festival report. See page 19 for some colour photos from Thornby’s Flower festival and Church pages for more photos of the displays at St Etheldreda’s.

Today's crime
TODAY. Back
to Basics.
Daventry Rural North Safer Commu-nity Team have over the last few months looked at ways to increase the liaison with our Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) co-ordinators. We have taken the "back to basics" approach by letting our co-ordinators know "Today’s crime TODAY". This allows them to filter through the information we give them and then alert all of their members as to what is happening day by day, if there is anything to report and this assists both the police and public in many ways. It allows for us, the police to be able to gather information quickly from response's to these alerts, sometimes within hours of an incident or crime occurring and also allows members of the Neighbourhood
Watch to advise their communities around the current crime trends and promote security devises to assist in deterring crimes of that nature. We have found that since this trial began, we have gained a closer working partnership between the local policing team and the villages we Police. By supporting each other in the fight against crime, it has shown that close communication is key. This can only get stronger if more of the community join and support their neighbourhood watch schemes. www.ourwatch.org.uk can direct you to your nearest co-ordinator or make contact with
your Safer Community Team. PC Hutchings To find out more about Neighbourhood Watch in our area, go to the Northampton-shire NHW web site: http://www.northamptonshireneighbourhoodwatch.co.uk/ You will see a web page with a Line: ‘Your Local Area’ and a search box where you can enter your post code. You will then be directed to local NHW sites and from there you can click on a NHW group.
If you want to join a scheme there is a Green button at top right of web page which you can click on and it will open up a registration process for you to complete.
If you want to send an enquiry message to the NHW group co-ordinator you can use the ‘send a message’ button that is on the lower right of the opened NHW Group web page [under heading ‘What you can do’].
Alternatively, anyone in Daventry area who is are interested in NHW should contact the Daventry Area NHW Support Team [DANWST] Chairman [ Andrew Crisp] on email: [email protected].

COTTESBROOKE NEWS
THE QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY
CELEBRATIONS The most special highlight for
a visitor from the USA
staying in Cottesbrooke was
a visit to Peterborough
Cathedral for the Choral
Evensong and Thanksgiving
Service for the 90th Birthday
of Her Majesty the Queen
on Sunday the 12th of June
2016.
A VISIT TO LE MANS Cottesbrooke resident John Harris has just returned from the
Le Mans 24 hour Motor Race. He travelled there and back on
his 1950 Vincent Motorcycle, returning via Pegasus bridge and
the D-Day beaches. The machine behaved itself impeccably,
belying it’s 66 years of age. The Motor race was very close with
a Porsche as eventual winner.
COTTESBROOKE VILLAGE
GARDENS OPEN On Sunday 29th May eight village gardens were open
which gave so much pleasure to all the visitors who
arrived; delicious cream teas and cakes were served in
the Village Hall where everyone relaxed after viewing
of the gardens.
What’s in your garden? I
always think about this,
especially at this time of
the year, with all the
many village gardens
open. The answers are
manifold, serenity, beauty
and refreshment, so a big thanks to each one of you
for opening your gardens.
NATURE WATCH Nature watch got completely turned around recently at our
house. While other people were ’Badger Watching’ we found a
muddy set of footprints on our stone terrace and a large smudgy
nose print on the sliding glass door. The next day there were
more footprints but small ones and more small nose smudges. This
really made us laugh.
On another occasion a fox was seen chasing a herd of sheep but
was discouraged by the instant arrival of the boys from the farm
coming from different directions to ward off the kill.
DELIVERING THE VILLAGE LINK Look who is delivering the Village Link in Cottesbrooke!
TOUR VISITS COTTESBROOKE ALL
SAINTS CHURCH A group of tourists from Cooks Tours Cambridge visited All
Saints Church. The tour leader Mr White provided the visitors
with an interesting history of the church.

GARDEN PARTY AT COTTESBROOKE
COTTAGE A heavy downpour immediately prior to the opening did nothing to
dampen the enthusiasm of the 70 or so members of the village and
their guests to the ‘Cheese, wine and strawberry Party’ held in the
immaculate garden at the home of Mr & Mrs Cazenove on Friday 1st
July.
In case of further rain all the guests were protected by a plethora of
‘Open Tents’ and a marquee enabling all to appreciate and enjoy the
impeccable vista of colourful flowers – sweet peas, roses and
foxgloves to the fore – bordered by a spick and span lawn so neatly
trimmed. One felt one was in defiance of the elements as we were
offered the choice of many delicious cheeses, abundant strawberries
with appropriate wines to enhance the taste buds. This created an
enjoyable atmosphere reflecting the successful efforts of our hosts
to ensure a great evening – we thank them sincerely for a
memorable evening.
The proceeds were aided by a well-supported raffle and were
divided between Cottesbrooke Church and the Village Hall.

CREATON IN BLOOM All those involved in the organising of Creaton in
Bloom, with the new addition of Open Farm Sunday,
would like to say thank you to everyone who
supported this village event. This was our most
successful year in both attendance and fundraising
for St Michael's Church fabric fund and other village
charities.
DUCKLINGS PRE-SCHOOL CREATON Ducklings Pre-School have
been so busy over the last
term. We have taken
advantage of our vast
outside space to teach the
children how to ride a bike
without stabilisers. Our
allotment is full and almost
ready to harvest our home
grown snacks. The children have taken great care of their
crop and are excited to try all of our organic produce.
We have been having PE lessons in the large sports hall and
challenging the children’s physical abilities as well as their
listening and understanding to follow instructions. Soon we
are to welcome a professional dance teacher who will be
teaching the children as well.
Our forest school sessions have been oversubscribed. The
children have had some phenomenal experiences in our
private woodland, den building, bug hunting, bear hunting,
puddle jumping, wild animal spotting, cooking on a real
campfire to name a few.
At the moment we are working up to transition time for
some of our children who are preparing to start primary
school so we have been welcoming primary school teachers
from the 9 schools to which we are sending our children. It
has been exciting sharing the achievements and experiences
the children have had at Ducklings with their new teachers.
We look forward to welcoming our new starters in
September to begin their amazing learning journey and share
incredible learning experiences with them too.
Come and visit our setting and see what we can offer your
children. We open Monday-Friday 9am -3pm (offering flexible
sessions) if you need wrap around care you can access the
breakfast 8-9am and after school club 3-5.15pm within Great
Creaton Primary school.
Phone Ducklings Pre-School 01604 505172 to book a
stay and play session with us.
Please complete our registration form to join our waiting list

GUILSBOROUGH NEWS
Thanks to all those who helped make our weekend a great
success. We were able to donate over £8,000 to our main
Village charities. This amount includes the generous
contribution from our National Gardens Scheme teas in the
Spring.
Friday had us dancing to the Blues band, Saturday we foraged
for bargains and played cricket! Sunday's day started with the
Aviva cyclists racing up the High St, the police motor bikes
being more of a hazard! All settled down with lots of families
enjoying the beach area, riding on donkeys whilst Mum relaxed in a
deckchair, listening to the Brass Band Pimms in hand! The Church
'beach ' flowers were wonderful and the usual crowd joined in the
Dog Show. All we needed was for Summer to arrive! Thanks again
to all involved showing our great community spirit.
Scrufts (2016) was a great success with perfect weather and families proudly showing their dogs and
racing around the seaside themed agility class. However, this year Scrufts will be remembered for the
large number of child entries and their happy smiling faces. Best in Show, was won by Jackie and her
beautiful German Shepherd Reggie (Photo on P2). Photos from the day can be found on the following
link: https://goo.gl/photos/vGkFSa26hVhDsb5SA. More Festival photos are on pages 2 and 17.

GMADS wins NODA award
Many Village Link readers will remember last
April’s production of Amy Rosenthal’s “Sitting
Pretty.” GMADS beat off stiff competition from
fellow NODA members in the East Midlands to
win Best Play. Director Pam Townsend and
leading lady Linda Lilley accepted the award at the
AGM of NODA (National Operatic & Drama
Association) on 5 June.
“If these walls could talk…...London Entertains!”
Inspired by the Queen’s 90th birthday, Guilsborough Village Hall will be transformed
into “The Old Thames Tavern” from 24th to 26th November 2016. We will present
snapshots of London life through the ages with drama, readings, poetry and music,
ending with a good old sing song. In true cockney tradition we will be serving pie,
pickles and a pint.
Join us behind the scenes or on stage
We have invested in new lighting software so would love to hear from anyone who
would like to try their hand at technical support (training available); and we always
welcome new performers, so do get in touch.

GUILSBOROUGH NEWS
PRIMARY SCHOOL
As I write this we are preparing to
go on a whole-school trip to the
Food & Farming Event at
Peterborough Showground. It
promises to be a great day, with
lots to see and do, and should help
our children to appreciate what is
going on around them in the fields
and farm sheds, as they grow up in
the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside. Our Year 5
children are also off on an overnight residential trip to Grendon
before we break up.
The Year 6s are starting to prepare for their big move up to
secondary school, this year we have 30 children moving on, all
of whom are going to Guilsborough Academy, and we wish
them all the very best for the future. Before they go, they are
staging their production of The Ancient Olympics, with a little
help from the other junior children. This play is all about the
Ancient Greeks and the start of the Olympic Games, so good
timing for 2016. Staying on the theme, we also have an Olympic
Week planned in school, with lots of extra sporting activities
and a visit from two GB athletes. We also had a visit recently
from two professional basketballers, one of them (Paul Sturgess)
actually holds the world record for being the tallest professional
player at 7’8½”. He used to play for the Harlem Globetrotters
and his party trick is to swing from the hoop! He was a really,
lovely gentle giant and great with the children – there’s a picture
below with myself and my (5’10”) husband.
Next week, we have our Transition Day, which takes place
when the older children get to visit their secondary school, and
our new Reception children come here for an introductory
session. At the same time, all of our children move up a year
group and get to spend the day in their new classrooms, with
their new teachers. A very exciting time, as you can imagine,
and I’m sure we will have a few rousing choruses of one of our
favourite songs, “One more step along the world I go”.
Best wishes to everyone for a
lovely, peaceful summer - and
before you know it, we’ll all be back
with the buses, cars and the buzz of
children busy learning – taking their
next step along that road.

Headteacher
PRE-SCHOOL
Wow another year has
finished and what a year it
was! We have seen many
families join us and we have
just said goodbye to our next
group of children moving on
to big school. They will be
missed and we wish them
good luck for their new
adventures in their primary schools. We have also had a year
full of fun, happiness and celebrations as this was the year we
achieved our first outstanding grading by Ofsted. What an
achievement it was and we are all very proud to call ourselves
outstanding as we have a loving, fun and challenging pre-school
to offer which we work very hard to provide. Our last term has

NEW ARRIVALS
Welcome to Graham Burton and his daughter Mary at 26 Pells
Close.
Christian Aid Collection Thank You!
A big thank you to everyone who donated to
Christian Aid in May’s house to house
collection. We raised £682 in Guilsborough
(excluding gift aid). I would like to express an even bigger thank
you to those who posted and collected envelopes – without
their help it wouldn’t happen.
Christian Aid is a worldwide charity that works to bring an end
to poverty, helping people of all faiths and none.
Katie Fulcher, Guilsborough organiser.
Thank you to everyone who supported the Parish
Council’s Clean for the Queen in Guilsborough
It was great that so many people came along
and we managed to make a big difference in a
morning—many weeds were banished,
pavements swept and verges cleared, greatly
improving the appearance of the village ready
for the Festival. The Parish Council appreciates
this help and support.

number of strong performances by the newly formed women’s team that plays at Guilsborough in the national Last Woman Stands

SERVICE FOR JIM
LEATHERLAND
At 6pm on the same day as the
Open Gardens (7th August) there
will be a service of commemoration
Songs of Praise at Hollowell
Church, for Jim, who died earlier
this year. Jim and his wife Joan
opened their garden on Church Hill
for almost 30 years and Jim was a
highly regarded Galanthophile (snowdrop expert). They
decided not to open their lovely garden this spring, whilst Jim
was ill, but Joan, with the help of friends , is going to open
Rosemount in August in his memory. Jim would have been 85
on August 6th. Everyone is welcome at the service to
remember the life of this fondly regarded villager. The service
will be lead by Rev Chris Peck assisted by Rev John Evans.
If you can help with flowers to decorate the church please
contact Wendy Evans at Ivy Cottage, Creaton Road. Tel 01604

HOLLOWELL & TEETON NEWS
HOLLOWELL HENS
On a wet and cold late June evening twelve Hens ventured out to the
village of Harrington to enjoy an evening at the Warner Edwards Gin
Distillery. Warner Edwards is a relatively new company running
operations from a 200 year old barn at the family farm. Their hand-
crafted gins are made with spring water from the farm and locally
sourced botanicals, like elderflower and sloe. In just four years of
trading their gins have already won a number of awards including two
golds. The Hens were welcomed into the barn with an offer of a
G & T and then took an interesting and informative tour of the distillery
and heard a potted history of the company. It was very enjoyable, as were the samples of each of the Gins from their range:
Dry Gin, Elderflower Gin, Rhubarb Gin and Sloe Gin.

COUNCIL NEWS
Mowing - Councillor Allen Eaton MBE has conducted site
meetings, with a representative of the Mowing Contractor, to
resolve concerns about areas that had not been cut to an agreed
standard. It has been necessary to carry out additional cuts to
manage the increased growth of grass during May & June. The
Council will continue to monitor the cutting service and asks
residents to report any concerns to the Clerk.
Vacancy for Councillors – Two vacancies arose for Hollowell
ward, following the May elections, and at an extra ordinary meeting
on 21 June 2016, Sue McCubbin was co-opted as a Councillor. It is
hoped the other vacancy will be filled in the near future. The
names of Councillors can be seen on the Council web site.
Vacancy for Clerk – after almost six years of valued service to
the Parish, Fiona Keable has tendered her resignation. The Council
is in the process of recruiting a replacement Clerk/Responsible
Financial Officer and details can be obtained from the Council web
site.www.hollowellandteeton.org.uk
TODDLER SWINGS RESTORED TO
THE POCKET PARK Many thanks to Councillors Barry Wendon and Allen Eaton
and the Steam Rally Team for the reconstruction of the
toddler swings in the Pocket Park. The original timber
frame had to be condemned last year as the posts were
rotting at the base. A lovely new frame has been built and
the old swings reattached.

CHURCH NEWS MESSAGE FROM REVEREND CHRIS PECK
RECTOR OF THE UPLAND GROUPS OF PARISHES
ESME’S ABSEIL SUCCESS!
Mission Accomplished! Esme would like to report
that she successfully abseiled down the west front
of Peterborough Cathedral on Saturday July 9th.
She would like to express grateful thanks to all
who supported her with prayers and donations.
Fund raising results and pictures to follow in the
next issue of Village Link.
midst of it all, whatever life is throwing at us, however good or bad. The Sunday following the referendum vote I read in church the words of a familiar psalm. ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the moun-
tains shake in the heart of the sea…God is in the midst….’.
One of the joys of being a priest is the privilege of rejoicing with those who rejoice through conducting christenings and weddings and weeping with those who weep through conducting funerals. A shiver goes down my spine every time I hold a baby over the font, hear the wedding vows and read the words of comfort as the coffin
is carried into church. God is there in the midst of our joys and our sorrows. And the church is there for each of us in our joys and
our sorrows. God is present equally in the darkness and in the light;
So whatever you are experiencing in life, the doors of the church are open for you to discover afresh just how present God is in the
midst of it all.
Life can be a lottery for all of us; we never know what is round the corner. It can be a cause for great celebration like the birth of a grandchild; or it can be bad news like a life threatening dis-ease of a relative. For all of us life is a mixture of black, white,
grey and wonderful rainbow colours making up a rich tapestry.
August and September are contrasting months. August has a spaciousness about it, a sense of less frenetic days, a chance to breathe, to be with family and friends more, to get out and about. September is when everything starts up again and sud-denly we are thrust into the turmoil of activity with all those groups that had a summer break starting up again, the new term
beginning and the pace of work quickening.
As I write the country is still reeling from the effects of the Brexit vote; the political parties are in the throes of leadership contests; the value of the pound is continuing to fall; gloomy predictions about the economy abound and news of suicide
bombings continue to reverberate around the world.
It is good at times like this to remember that God is in the

Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead clinched overall victory in the 2016 Aviva Women's Tour, finishing safely in the bunch in 14th position at the end of the 113-kilometre Northamptonshire stage as Finland's Lotta Lepisto took the final stage win in Kettering from a group of seven riders.
Armitstead also clinched the Adnams Best British Rider Jersey as the highest placed Brit, with a 53-second advantage over 2012 Olympic Gold medallist Dani King. The victory will also move Armitstead up to second in the standings of the UCI Women's WorldTour. Cllr Heather Smith, leader of Northamptonshire County Council, which brought the Aviva Women’s Tour to Northamptonshire, said: “This is the third year that we’ve been lucky enough to host a stage of the race and I
really believe that this year has been the best yet. It’s wonderful to see the thousands of people lining the streets to cheer on the riders and it creates a fantastic sense of excitement. Cycling really is on the up at the moment and I hope people will feel inspired by these world-class athletes to get on their bikes and enjoy cycling for themselves.”
The pack rides through Guilsborough High
Street on Sunday 19th June
