General Manager’s Report - Colin Radchenko, PGA - General Manager

The current Southern California drought situation has been very challenging for all of us, but this is especially true for the golf course industry. We have done many things in the past five years to reduce the water use at our course but now we have another opportunity to make a significant impact in this area. We submitted an application to the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) in order to pursue a rebated turf reduction plan. The MWD is offering a rebate of up to $2 per square foot for any golf course looking to do this and we recently

received their approval to go ahead with this project. This is very exciting news!

Our management team has visited several courses in San Diego County which are already in the process of completing their turf reduction project. Our goal is to remove around 35 of our 151 irrigated acres of turf. We have entered into agreements with a golf course architect and construction company that have already successfully completed many of these turf reduction projects in Southern California. In fact, the architect we have chosen was the principal designer of The Bridges in North County. All 27 holes will undergo a certain level of turf removal and in its place will be beautiful drought tolerant landscaping that consists of various plants and flowers. Our goal is to not change the nature of the design of any of the three courses, but rather enhance the overall beauty of the natural setting of every hole. The result will be a fresh new face to every hole at our course.

We will begin the course work in June. All courses and holes will be open during the project. We assure you that this work will have little or no impact on the regular play of any of the holes. We will also take this opportunity to make other course improvements such as revamping the cart path and walking access to Canyon #7 green and adding several championship tees throughout the course. We also will be working on strengthening Meadow to make it more difficult for our better players. Our goal is to have all this work completed by the end of this year.

Course and Club Improvements While other courses in the County continue to cutback and in some cases close down, this is certainly not the case at Steele Canyon. In addition to the upcoming turf reduction and course beautification project, many other improvements continue to be completed. On the course, significant tree trimming and tree removal has been done. This work occurred on Canyon 8 and 9, Meadow 1, and Ranch 5, 6 and 9. Several other areas have been landscaped with decorative bark. You will also notice the recent purchase and installation of larger fairway distance markers, new cups and flagsticks. We have implemented a daily pin placement sheet system that rotates through 9 different pin locations, which will be distributed by the starter prior to your round.

The clubhouse also continues to be upgraded. We recently installed an ATM machine and completed a makeover of the front entrance by staining the concrete front steps and upgrading all the hand railings outside the clubhouse. In the next few weeks we are scheduled to install a new, wider exit door out of the golf shop to the starter booth area. Finally we continue to look at bar renovation plans and concept drawings for the outdoor bistro café. Look for these to start this fall pending owner approval.

Saturday Team Play - Our Men’s Saturday Team Play had a tough year this year, finishing with

2 wins and 4 losses on the season. This year the Steele Canyon Team was matched up against

Sycuan, Bernardo Heights, and Pala Mesa. Sycuan ended up winning the division with wins

in all 6 of their matches. As usual Steele Canyon impressed upon the opposing teams with

the great course conditions, excellent luncheons, and fine sportsmanship that

we have grown accustomed to and manage each and every season. A special thank you

goes out to Captain Dave Stearns for all of his work in putting the team together along with

uniforms, practice rounds and schedules. We look forward to improving upon this next year and making it

back to the playoffs in 2016.

Course Handicap Re-Rating in Progress - Many people have asked “Why is Ranch #7 considered the 7th

hardest hole on the Ranch course when I rarely can reach the green in regulation and have to get up and down

for a par?” Handicaps are assigned to holes based on the “average” score that is recorded on that hole. While

players may not be able to reach the green in regulation consistently on Ranch #7, they are also not likely to

make a very big score as it is a generous fairway with little trouble coming into play on the hole. Many golfers

will make a 5 on the hole but rarely will there be a 7 or higher. When you compare to Ranch #4 it is very

easy to come up short in the creek and all of a sudden you are looking at a 5 or higher most

likely. So the strokes in comparison to par is the main attribute in determining the hole handicap. This is why

the Par 5s at Steele Canyon are rated the hardest. It is very easy for a single digit handicap player to make a

double bogey as well as a double digit player to make even higher. We are still gathering data to

verify and check all of our holes handicaps. After each round you complete here at Steele Canyon please turn

in your scorecard into the collection bin next to the handicap computer with your name, tees played and hand-

icap. We need many scores so please turn in all of your cards.

Practice Range Hours - Come experience our NEW driving range mats. The mats are designed to be able

to place a real tee into the mat and to cushion the blow on iron shots. The result is a more realistic practice

environment. The Practice Range is open daily sun-up to sun-down with the exception of Tuesday evenings as

we close 2 hours before sunset for maintenance. Improve your ball striking off of grass M-Th after 2pm and

F-Su all day long!

Jenna Busby Fundraiser Tournament - I want to thank all those members and players that came out to support the fundraiser tournament to help Jenna Busby, one of our special team members.

As always, when we ask for the support of the Steele Canyon family, you all come through in a big way. I am proud to report that your generosity and participation resulted in raising over $6300 to help Jenna with her medical costs.

A special thank you goes out to Chris and Karen Ward, George Heidenreich, Steve Thunberg, Dr. Chuck Campanella and Dr. Nicholas Gadler.

TaylorMade Demo Day - Back by popular demand!

Sunday, June 7, 10am-2pm. Schedule an appointment to get the right shaft fitting in your clubs.

Demo Day Testimonials:

“The TaylorMade demo-day was spectacular. My new hybrids are incredible. The fitting provided me with

clubs I can trust. I no longer feel the need to fight hooking. I can just aim and swing with confidence. I am

looking forward to your next event.” – Ron

“Last month I took advantage of TaylorMade’s demo day at Steele Canyon. My appointment was at 10am,

Alan was there with the TaylorMade representative. We started out with the driver getting a baseline off my

R11. The goal was a more forgiving driver and reduced ball spin. We achieved a 1000 rpm spin rate

reduction and a ball speed increase of 11 mph with a lot of shaft tuning of the new R15 driver. We moved

over to the irons replacing my R7 CGB's with R15 RSi, they are much more forgiving and a lot more

accurate. The rep asked me the last time I replaced my wedges? About 8 years ago, obviously they were

worn down and not developing spin due to eroded groves, we added 4 wedges to the order, again the Taylor

made R15's, what a difference! Case in point if your wedge is more than a year or two old, think about

replacing it. Icing on the cake is a nice discount on the purchase from Alan. Next time they have a demo day

do yourself a favor and check out the new stuff!” - Bruce

Weekly Clinic Update - Our weekly clinics are moving to Tuesdays for the months of June and July. Receive instruction in a casual environment with a group setting. Instruction is from 4-4:30pm and is $10 per person. Contact the golf shop at (619) 441-6900 to sign up.

Our Newest Golf Shop Employee - Felipe comes from a small town in the San Joaquin Valley. His passion for golf started at a nine hole municipal golf course in his home town. After moving to San Diego he attended The Golf Academy of America, since then he has been pursuing a career in the golf industry and aspires to be a Golf Professional. In his spare time he runs a home graphic design and computer business and works two other part time jobs. He is no stranger to hard work! Felipe became a US citizen last month and considers that to be one of his greatest accomplishments. He feels extremely lucky to be back in San Diego and is excited to be working at Steele Canyon. When Felipe is not at the golf course he may be out spending time camping, fishing, or hanging out with friends and family.

Superintendent’s Report - Antonio Osuna I want to start my first superintendent’s report by giving you a brief resume of my qualifications, and then discussing the key challenges and opportunities we’ll be facing this summer.

Biography I have been in the golf business for 23 years, starting at Riverwalk (Stardust) Golf Club in Mission Valley. A year later I moved to a better position at Miramar Golf Course and worked there for 5 years. In 2001, I left Miramar to accept a position at the prestigious Del Mar Country Club, and worked there for 2 years until being offered a job here at Steele Canyon. I worked as the head mechanic for the first 5 years and have worked as assistant superintendent for the past 8 years. The past 13 years working alongside Phil has been both a great education and extremely rewarding. In the time as assistant superintendent I have been preparing to become a certified golf course superintendent. |I enrolled in school at Cuyamaca College and achieved a turf management degree and

received a California applicator license. With Phil moving on to Coronado Golf Course the opportunity arose for me to apply for the position of head superintendent. I was very pleased when the management team approached me and offered me the promotion. It is a dream come true and I’m confident I will arise to the challenge of continuing to improve Steele Canyon and provide its members and guests an even better golf course.

Mandated Water Conservation We will be required to reduce our water usage 25% this summer, which will force us to make tough decisions as to where the water will be allocated. Obviously, the first areas will be rough and non playing areas. We’ll no doubt be forced to include the fairways, with the result being some of the mounds and higher areas showing some distress. We will be spraying the turf with wetting agents to enable the turf and soil to retain more moisture. In addition, we will be fertilizing constantly in an effort to make the plant healthier and less needy for water.

2015 U.S. Open Local Qualifying -

Over 85 golfers with a handicap index of less than 1.4 required competed at this year’s Local Qualifier at

Barona Creek Golf Club on Monday, May 11 for a total of 5 spots. Steele Canyon Golf Club was well

represented with several competitive golfers in the field. Barona Creek played to a par of 71 and it required a

score of -3, 68, to advance to the final qualifying Sectional Round. Of the 5 qualifiers, 4 were amateurs, with

2 of them being Steele Canyon natives in Ryan Bisharat (Member, Cathedral Catholic High School

Senior) and Kevin Cline (graduate Steele Canyon High School). It was a birdie fest for them with 8 and 7

birdies respectively; both would finish with a score of -3, 68. Head Golf Professional Alan Scheer went off in

the first group of the day and put up a nice -2, 69, for everyone to look at early. It wasn’t until 2 hours later

and the 3rd to last group of the day to come in, when a 64 and a 68 were posted that Alan was knocked out

of the Top 5. He would end up as the 1st alternate, needing a cancellation or exemption from another player

in the Sectional Round for him to advance and compete in June.

Honorable mention also goes to Assistant Pro Cavin McCall who shot a +2, 73. The Sectional Qualifier is at

Newport Beach Country Club and Big Canyon Country Club on Monday, June 8 although qualifiers are not

necessarily guaranteed that site as it is based upon World Ranking and preference throughout 10 Sectional

sites. The Sectional Qualifier is 36 holes in one day, 18 at each course with only a select few at each site

qualifying for the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, WA June 15-21.

will be on sale that evening at the starter’s booth. We’ll also have VIP seating with a private buffet available on the

Sunset Deck.

Superintendent's Report (continued) As we do our part, we are asking you to do your part. Please use the 90 degree rule to reduce the impact of compaction, the number one killer of grass. As you know, we have reduced the amount of ropes dramatically to enhance your experience and do not want to revert back to that form of restriction. Please stay on the cart paths as much as possible. It will not only improve the course conditions but will improve your health!

Course Improvements As Colin mentioned in his article, we have instituted various improvements on the course, from new flags to new range mats to painting the cups. We are also working with management in cleaning up overgrown areas throughout the course. With the club being 25 years old, a lot of the rough areas have grown to the point that Gary Player’s original design and vision has changed. You will start seeing similar changes to the bunkers and some green complexes as they too have been impacted by the years. Specifically, many greens and bunkers have shrunk as the maintenance workers have trimmed or mown the perimeters a little less each time.

Philosophy and Vision for Steele Canyon Golf Club Our philosophy for our club is one that is shared by me and our management team- to make Steele Canyon the finest golf club possible. We are striving to continue to improve the facility by employing the finest agronomy techniques, whether it is all Bermuda turf or fast and sure greens. I have the 100% support from the owners and management to spare no cost on ensuring we continue to improve the facility. I think we can all agree that the changes implemented so far confirm that vision. I look forward to seeing you on the course!

Phil Fitzgerald As many of you already know, Phil Fitzgerald has decided to move on to another facility. Phil has accepted a superintendent job with the City of Coronado to look after Coronado Golf Club.

Phil came to Steele Canyon 13 years ago after spending time at several other courses in San Diego County. He arrived at a time when the course was in great need of work in terms of turf management, water conservation and overall playing conditions. He was instrumental in the entire process that led to the approval of monitored ground water use for the course. This led to overseeing the installation of three deep water wells, the overhauling of the entire course irrigation system and finally converting the entire course to 100% drought tolerant Bermuda grass. All of these important steps have led to a dramatic reduction in the actual water usage to irrigate the course over the years. In fact, we now use only about 40% of the total water used in 2006 by comparison. Clearly, Phil has put this facility on the correct path in terms of water conservation especially in this time of unprecedented drought. We thank Phil for all he has done, and wish him much success in the future.

Chef’s Select Recipe - Red Pepper Soup

Soup Ingredients: 8 large red bell peppers 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 cup chopped onion 2 cloves minced garlic 1/4 cup tomato paste 6 cups chicken stock 2 cups heavy cream 2 Tbsp chopped fresh cilantro leaves 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 -2 Tbsp cornstarch 1 cup sweet corn kernels, lightly roasted

Directions - Slice the peppers in half lengthwise; remove stem, seeds & membrane. Place in broiler skin side up until the skin turns black and blisters. Remove and immediately place in a small paper bag or plastic container with a tight lid. Place in the freezer for 10 minutes; this will loosen the roasted skin. Remove peppers and rub off the black skin with your fingers. Chop skinned peppers and set aside.

Sauté the butter, onions, and garlic until soft in a heavy bottomed soup pot on med-low heat. Add in red peppers, tomato paste, and chicken stock. Bring to a low boil, reduce the heat, and then simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in the heavy cream, cilantro, salt, and pepper. Stir in the cornstarch mixed with a little cold water to thicken. Simmer 5 minutes. Let the soup cool slightly, and then blend in batches in a blender, or use an immersion blender to puree. Sprinkle the lightly roasted corn over the soup before serving and top with a dollop of Cilantro Lime Sour Cream ( see ingredients below).

Cilantro-Lime Sour Cream:

1 cup sour cream

1/2 lime, juiced

1 teaspoon finely minced fresh cilantro leaves In a mixing

bowl, whisk all ingredients vigorously until light and creamy.
