On Monday, October 3, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., Santuario de San Antonio Parish opens its doors to FRANCISFEST 2016 - featuring “The Orchestra of the Filipino Youth” and Brian Berino, pianist, conducted by Maestro Olivier Ochanine, First Prize Winner of the 2015 Antal Dorati International Conducting Competition and past Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra.

The support for FrancisFest 2016 has been overwhelming! Truly a genuine celebration that inspires and energizes and which calls for profuse thanksgiving. Parish families and corporate sponsors have been so generous with their donations that truly, the cup overflows! An appeal for musical instruments in good condition among the youth of the Parish produced a violin, a saxophone and two guitars which will go to needy, young musicians.

Behind every success of FrancisFest as a major annual

fund-raising event of Santuario de San Antonio Parish is the appreciation of one’s ability to uplift people’s lives. In the hands of this year’s Chairperson Menchu O. Bautista and her very competent committee members, parishioners from varied business sectors and interests have come together and shared their blessings with those in need: inmates at the Makati and Taguig City Jails, poor but deserving youth eager to pursue an education, terminally ill and indigent patients, mostly children at the Philippine General Hospital, material and spiritual assistance to poor families, financial aid to seminarians and poor Franciscan parishes in rural areas of Luzon.

In the words of a Filipino violin virtuoso: “All that I have, all that I am comes from God, and the ability to keep on making music, and to be in a position where I can touch people with my music is a grace – a gift from above.” Let us fill the pews of our Church and witness first-hand the musical performance of 58 young music scholars – talented children from the deprived communities of Metro-Manila, Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite and Mindoro - who have received standing ovations for their performances in the US and Malaysia.

Let our applauses, our standing ovation ring loud and clear – a genuine admiration for their struggle to rise above poverty by making use of their God-given talents to bring beautiful music to this troubled world. They are God’s instruments of peace for all of us!

Parish Bulletin

The title of this reflection comes from a collection of the Church’s social teachings. It aptly describes the lack of awareness and appreciation among the faithful of the social dimension of Christian faith which is an integral part of the Church’s vocation and mission.

Recently a couple of ex-friars (one of them has been a priest for more than 25 years) posted in their FB accounts that the bishops should confine their role in the pulpit. The Bishop was commenting on the spate of extra-judicial killings in the society today. If people think that the Church should limit itself to the pulpits, and not get involved in social issues, then it is not surprising that the social teachings of the Church remain a secret, especially among the faithful.

Because of our history, we have set up dichotomies in our minds. Matter is evil; Spirit is good. The Church is for the spirit; Everything else is about matter. We have yet to appreciate the full meaning of the mystery of the incarnation - which brings matter and spirit together. The incarnation means that all creation is good; as such it is not only the spiritual that we must pursue but the material well-being as well. Life on earth is just as important as the life of the spirit. The petition of the “Our Father” says it all: “Thy will be done on EARTH as it is in HEAVEN.”

Modern Church teachings today reflect this. At the Second Vatican Council, the Church states that “The joys and hopes of the world are the church’s as well”,

and that the Church “has the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times in the light of the Gospel.”

Subsequent synods of bishops and our own Philippine Church have pursued this church’s mission & vocation in their shared discernment. Over the years the Church has made statements like, “action in behalf of justice… fully appear to us as constitutive of the preaching of the Gospel. Or that “preaching is incomplete without the themes of human rights, justice & developments.”

It is our fervent prayer that many of us would get excited unraveling the best-kept secret of the Church; “to engage more forcefully in the linking of faith and justice, through as an increased awareness of, appreciation for the rich heritage of Christian social teaching.

Somehow, when people think ‘Church,’ they think of masses, novenas, and prayers. All the liturgies and practices of the Church come right to our minds. And these are all good and beautiful things.

But the Church also has a rich history in justice and human dignity. From the very beginning, Jesus placed great emphasis on helping the marginalized in society. He even went so far as to identify himself with them, saying “whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” (Matt 25:40)

Pope Francis invited everyone to remember this, especially in our world today. He said, “In welcoming the outcast who suffer physically and welcoming sinners who suffer spiritually, our credibility as Christians is at stake.”

When we look around, and we see how much injustice there is in our society, our identity as Catholics become even more necessary. We each must face the question, “How can I bear witness to Jesus and his love in the world? Now more than ever, how can I demonstrate a commitment to justice by serving the oppressed and the outcast in society? How can I help those who are forgotten and neglected? Or those who are left to die in the streets?

Pope Francis again invites us, “Humanity today needs men and women ready to spend their lives freely in service to those of their brothers and sisters who are poorest and most vulnerable, in imitation of Christ, who gave himself completely for our salvation.”

May they know we are Christians by our love.

In welcoming the outcast who suffer physically and welcoming sinners who suffer spiritually, our credibility as Christians is at stake.

- Pope Francis
