We, the church, the redeemed of God, have a need for fervent, urgent prayer. If we understand what being God’s people in this world means—empowered by Word and Sacrament as the Spirit of Jesus works in us and through us—that means because of Christ and His love for the world, we hold a special place in the universe and in God’s plan for people. That requires prayer. If you believe that God works through and accomplishes His will through the ministry at Prince of Peace (I do—as do our leaders!), then urgent prayer is needed. Prayers that God continue to transform us into the image of His Son, prayers that God not allow us to become complacent or discouraged as we live in this world, prayers that God lead us all the more to see His Word as life-giving and His Gospel as having unfathomable power, prayers that God would reveal His will and His purpose to us all the more so that we would dream His dreams and inherit His passion for seeing lives transformed by Him. A little too pie in the sky? Not really. I believe in the next few months we will see the Lord renew us in and through our worship, that He will equip us and empower us with Spiritual tools for powerful outreach (events planning and coming in the next few months), that He will lead us to re-envision how we see ourselves and structure our ministries so we would be even more effective in connecting a diverse people to Jesus, experiencing unity in Christ while we serve Him constantly as one people of God. How can I be so confident? Because I am praying with urgency and expectation. Others are praying with urgency and expectation. We are the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus – in the heart of Orlando!

October 2016 www.poporlando.com

URGENT PRAYERS NEEDED! I'll bet that caught your attention (‘tho my wife said it was “overkill” for a headline). But, urgent prayer IS needed, isn't it for our world. (And before you tune out because you “get it,” or because this will be about some urgent need the church, i.e. institution, might have—please hang with me here.)

I invite you to be praying with urgency and expectation that Jesus would use us as His people, instruments of His to change the world.

Blessing in Christ,

Pastor Ken

Middle School Youth Gathering

November 4-6, 2016 Lake Yale Baptist Center

This year’s theme “Unshaken & Stirred” comes from Hebrews 10:22-25: “Let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who pro-mised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encour-aging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

The featured speaker will be Rev. Travis Hartjen. He is a church planter in the Allen, TX area who launched Tangible Grace Fellowship in September of 2010. His wife and four kids love connecting to their neigh-bors and serving the church community. An exciting new band, Bread of Stone, will be leading music and worship throughout the gathering.

This Gathering is specifically for middle school youth. To register, a youth must be in 6th, 7th, or 8th grade during the 2016-'17 school year.

Team work at its best!

This summer, through the generosity of the Bayless Family, the Prince of Peace Preschool was able to renovate our classrooms and update equipment and supplies. We are blessed to have had the ability to paint, install new carpet, and provide our students with a fresh new school. Plans are underway for a huge unveiling and celebration after the start of the New Year. Please look for updates as we get closer to the event.

PRESCHOOL UPGRADES

Prince of Peace Crossroads 5 October 2016

FROM THE SUPER…

It’s been said that it takes a village to raise a child. While it’s true that many outside influences factor into the development of a child, the main values begin at home with the family and their church.

Family responsibilities begin with teaching the love of God to the children. Parents are challenged to be a role model of faith for their offspring. It is through their example of daily Bible reading, the encouragement of family prayer time, and the regular attendance at Sunday School and Sunday church services that they demonstrate the importance of God in their life. In addition to the daunting task of faith development, parents are faced with teaching an assortment of life manage-ment skills that enable children to become self-sufficient and confident with the simple skills of laundry, cooking, car maintenance, lawn care and balancing a checkbook that will play an important part in their adult life.

Family traditions and celebrations are a wonderful way to bring family members together as birthdays, baptisms, confirmations, graduations, promotions, etc., are honored. It’s so important to take the time to recognize these special personal achievements for each family member.

One of the functions of the church is to help us develop a Christian community or church family that can work in tandem with the role of parents. Opportunities such as helping distribute food with the Food Pantry, visiting those in nursing homes, sending cards to shut-ins, and praying for those on a prayer list can enable us to develop servant hearts and a caring for others. Christian education complements the nurturing given by the parents and encourages children to utilize their unique God-given gifts daily. As an active participant in church activities, children, youth and families are able to develop a support system within their church family that will benefit them should a crisis situation occur.

It’s too easy for our fast-paced lives to take precedence over family traditions and activities. It’s time to take control of our busy schedules and make Christ a priority at home, as well as at church. As parents, we want our children to develop into well-adjusted adults who have a love of God and an ever-growing faith life. Adults, who know they are loved and are able to show kindness, forgiveness and are loving and caring with others. Remember, it is through our actions that our children learn. It’s important as we fulfill our roles as parents that we become the type of role model we would be proud to have our children emulate.

In His Love,

Kathy Hudson Sunday School Superintendent

UPCOMING EVENTS

Prince of Peace Crossroads 7 October 2016

FOOD PANTRY ASSISTANCE The biggest community outreach program at Prince of Peace needs your help! We serve 300 families on the 4th Saturday of each month with an assortment of enough food to fill a personal shopping cart! Each family receives frozen meat, canned products, fresh produce, and eggs (when available), cereal, bread and bakery goods, etc.

“Where and what can I do to help,” you ask? We are in great need of helpers (known as runners) to take the carts full of groceries to the cars of all receiving food. We are looking for healthy people of high school age and older to be the runners. Some high school students may need to have community service hours documented for the “Bright Futures” program. We would be happy to acknowledge your participation with the Food Pantry to fulfill that requirement.

Food Pantry hours on every 4th Saturday of each month begin at 8:30 am until approximately 12:30 pm. We would love to have you join the Food Pantry team! Please arrive promptly at 8:30 am and come to the open door in the playground. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes (sneakers work best) and appropriate clothing (if you have a red t-shirt we would encourage you to wear it).

I have been a part of the Food Pantry for the past 5 years and the feeling that I get from helping others is indescribable! It’s so rewarding to be able to help others and hear the thankfulness and see the gratitude on their faces! Won’t you come and experience the love of Jesus in action?

LUTHERAN WOMEN IN MISSION Next Meeting: Oct. 19 – 10:30 am LWML is back at work, finding ways to support missions. This summer in July and August combined, we gathered $126.00 in the mite boxes which was sent to support missions through the National and FL/GA District LWML. $110.00 was given in September for mites. Thank you and praise God!

We collected a very large box of eyeglasses which will be used in Third World countries as a gift of improved sight for those in need. Trained missionaries will provide the service. Thank you to all who rummaged through drawers, etc. to make this project so successful.

Our latest LWML convention in FL produced many new mission grants. We will list them for you on LWML Sunday in October and talk about them this coming year. Please pray for each one.

On October 9, we will celebrate LWML Sunday here at PoP. That's the day we pass the large mite box and ask all of you to transfer your "change" from your pockets or wallets into the box. This year we also will be selling car magnets for $2.00 each or 3 for $5.00. They are large circles (about 4-5" in diameter) with the word "PEACE" in the middle. This is a word we are longing for in this crazy, negative world.

Our next meeting is October 19. Our mission service project that day will be to make "ghosts" from tootsie roll suckers and tissues to be used for Trunk or Treat on Sunday, October 30th.

The Lutheran Women's Missionary League recently gave a mission grant of $50,000 from mites to help fund con-struction of a seminary for The Lutheran Church Mission in Uganda and provided $20,000.00 toward funding 100 women to attend church conferences for the next two years. There are over 110 Lutheran congregations with over 25,000 members in Uganda. They have a deep desire to proclaim Jesus to all. Praise God for them!

YOUNG AT HEART Next Meeting: Oct. 12 – 11:00 am Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. – 1 Corinthians 15:58

We started our New Year off in September with a salad luncheon with 10 members present. Many items were discussed, such as what activities we want to do and determined what our fund raiser would be. It was decided we would finalize the list at the October meeting.

We all agreed that the peanuts sold last year went over very well and we should do it again, so please watch for the startup date in your bulletin.

Lunch will be provided as we our having our Halloween party on October 12 in the Family Life Center at 11:00 am. See you then and please bring a friend!

VETERAN’S DAY FAITH SERVICE Sunday, November 13 – 9:45 am Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will host a special Presentation on Thanks and Faith for our present DOD Orlando Veterans and families. A guest Pastor and speaker have been invited for a special Veterans Day Memorial Celebration. Mr. Dennis Joyner (a former Vietnam Disadvantaged Non-Commissioned Officer and a Triple Vietnam Amputee Veteran) and his wife Donna will be with us to discuss his injuries, how His family reacted, and how they have continued to lead a normal life in Orlando. Mr. Joyner will also show a short film on the design, funding, and opening of the US DOD Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Mr. Joyner is presently the President of the U.S. Veterans Memorial Foundation, presiding adjutant of the US Disadvantaged Veterans Association (DAV) in Washington, D.C., and is an active member in the Orlando Chapter 16 of the DAV. His wife, Donna, is also a Senior Staff Member of the Orlando Florida Chapter 16 DAV Auxiliary Group.

Please mark your calendars for 9:45 am on November 13th in the Sanctuary. It will be a great presentation for our multicultural congregational mission. Please come and salute all of our Orlando Veterans. All other Orlando residents are also invited to attend.

HELPING OTHERS—SPREADING HOPE Your Gift to the “Pastors’ Discretionary Fund” can help! Through the ministries of Prince of Peace people most certainly experience “the heart, hands, and feet of Jesus—in the heart of Orlando.”

One way in which people experience this hope in real and tangible ways is through the “Pastors’ Discretionary Fund.” This fund is the pipeline to provide assistance to individuals and families who come through our doors with acute, and some-times critical needs that are currently unmet in their lives.

Helping these families and individuals in real, tangible ways gives us an avenue to demonstrate that we care as we listen compassionately; opportunity to pray with those God leads to our door; and most importantly, occasion to share the Good News of the hope God gives us only through Christ.

In the community we serve, the need is great, and the opportunities to demonstrate and speak of God’s love are limitless. Your special gift (that is, above-and-beyond your regular gifts and offerings) to the “Pastors’ Discretionary Fund” can help meet the acute, critical needs of some, even as our staff comes alongside to help individuals and families discover resources and strategies that can guide them to greater independence in the long term.

POP FOLDING MACHINE Used for weekly bulletins and mailings, our current folding machine of 17 years is no longer serviceable due to parts availability. A matching grant from PoP’s Endowment Committee will match dollar-for-dollar up to $1,500 total. Please designate “FOLDING MACHINE” on your check, envelope, or online gift.
