WE ALL LIVE IN A... BEATLEMANIA!

It’s said the world doesn’t change in a day, but when the Pan Am Flight 101

landed at JFK Airport, in New York, at 1h30 p.m. on the 7th day of February 1964, the

world, the people and the music would never be the same. Inside the airplane, four

boys from Liverpool. Outside, 10,000 teenagers, 200 press members, and more than

100 police officers. Ladies and gentleman, let me introduce you the Beatlemania!

The Beatles started in 1960, at The Cavern Club, in Liverpool. A few years later,

in 1963, the band’s success increases in a way that nobody expected. In the middle of

1963, they were already considered the greatest band in UK. A title they carry until

today although the band no longer exists.

In just 10 years (1960-1970), John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison

and Ringo Starr changed rock n’ roll’s appearance, creating an incomparable musical

language and inspiring the youth of the time. The commotion among young people was

such that journalists named this phenomenon as Beatlemania. No other music artist

managed to reproduce this accomplishment.

“Screaming girls launched themselves against the police.” “It was absolute

pandemonium. The whole hall went into some kind of state, almost like collective

hypnotism. I'd never seen anything like it." Reported some cops who helped to protect

the band from the fans at the airport. Bellow, we can see a great photo that captures

But what, after all, those four Liverpool’s guys were doing in the US?

The Beatles had twelve singles on the Billboard chart. The top five positions

were all Beatles singles, plus 31, 41, 46, 58, 65, 68, and 79. That's really fantastic for a

bunch of guys who just a few months earlier were struggling with a number 17 hit. So,

worried that all this fame was something momentary, Brian Epstain, the Beatles’

manager, booked as many concerts and TV appearances as possible.

While The Beatles were the greatest thing in the UK music, in the U.S., The Ed

Sullivan Show was the biggest TV show of all time. If you were an American back in

the 60s, on Sundays at 20 P.M. you just had to tune in the show.

If The Beatles were the biggest thing in UK and Ed Sullivan was as important in

the US, why not put all these talents together? As amazing as it might seem,

everything happened by accident. Late October, early November, when Ed Sullivan or

one of his representatives, was delayed at the Heathrow Airport because the Beatles

were coming back from a trip outside London. There were so many fans on the tarmac

when the Beatles' plane arrived that they had to temporarily cancel all flights because

they were afraid one of those kids was going to get hurt. And so Sullivan (or one of his

representatives) were sitting on one of those planes wanting to know what was going

on and they got it explained to him: it was the arrival of a British band. And then, they

saw the mania themselves.

On the 7th day of February 1964, The Beatles arrived in America for several

concerts in the country. The biggest and most important presentation occurred on the

9th day of February. During the show, 73 millions of people were glued to their screens,

the largest American TV audience until today.

From the moment Paul McCartney started to sing the first sentences from “All

My Loving”, there were no coming back. The Beatlemania became in a wave that

washed over the world and each US corner. They played only five songs (All My

Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing There e I Want To

Hold Your Hand), but it was enough so they had the US at their feet.

During the time the Beatles were on The Ed Sullivan Show, the police didn’t

receive any calls; crime in the city of New York went down significantly. As George

liked to say, even the criminals stopped for a minute to watch The Beatles. And he’s

correct. It’s hard to not get emotional while listening to the unforgettable melodies with

lyrics that create an emotional link between the band and its fans.

On the 9th day of February 2014, Beatlemaniacs all around the world celebrated

the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ arrival in America. To celebrate the date, Paul

McCartney and Ringo Starr joined several artists at the show: The Beatles: A Night

That Changed America. (In Brazil, broadcasted by TNT)

In a rare joint presentation, Paul and Ringo honored the two bandmates, John

Lennon (shot to death in 1980) and George Harrison (victim of cancer in 2001) "We were in

a band called The Beatles, and whenever we played George and John were with us, "Ringo

said to the audience. McCartney said: "Tonight we are remembering our friends John and

George."

Today, it’s hard to imagine a world where The Beatles doesn’t exist. Without

them, we wouldn’t have 90% of the bands and songs we have today. And it’s also hard

to imagine someone who doesn’t like them or, at least, someone who has never heard

a Beatles’ song. All of us, even those who dislike it, suffered some kind of influence.

Cast the first stone who has never danced “Twist and Shout” at a party! A Brazilian

singer, Zélia Duncan, said: “I don’t know how a person can live without Beatles”.

Another Brazilian singer, Milton Nascimento, said: “The Beatles are the best; the rest is

just a joke!”

The Beatles’ influences are really everywhere. Do you know Jude Law, the

British actor? He was named after the song “Hey Jude” just like the musician Liam

Gallagher named his eldest son Lennon as a tribute to John Lennon. In April of

1990 two scientists, Brian Skiff and Edward Bowell, discovered 4 asteroids between

Mars and Jupiter. Being Beatles fans, you can guess how they named the asteroids...

There are so many Beatles’ references in our lives that if write all of them, this

would turn into a book! So, the thing is: They are here, there and everywhere, and

whether you like it or not, we all live in a Beatlemania!

TODOS NÓS VIVEMOS EM UMA… BEATLEMANIA!

Dizem que o mundo não muda em um dia, mas quando o voo 101 da

PanAm pousou no Aeroporto JFK, em Nova York, às 13h20 da tarde do dia 7 de

fevereiro de 1964, o mundo, as pessoas e a música nunca mais seriam os mesmos.

Dentro do avião, quatro garotos de Liverpool. Do lado de fora, 10.000 adolescentes,

200 membros da imprensa e mais de 100 policiais. Senhoras e senhores, apresento-

lhes a Beatlemania!

Os Beatles iniciam-se em 1960, no The Cavern Club, em Liverpool. Pouco

tempo depois, em 1963, o sucesso da banda aumenta de uma forma que ninguém

esperava. Na metade de 1963, eles já eram considerados a maior banda do Reino

Unido. Título que levam até hoje, apesar da banda não mais existir.

Em apenas 10 anos (1960-1970), John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George

Harrison e Ringo Starr mudaram para sempre a aparência do Rock n' Roll, criando

uma linguagem musical incomparável e inspirando a juventude da época. A comoção

entre os jovens foi tanta que os jornalistas nomearam esse fenômeno de Beatlemania.

Nenhum outro artista da música conseguiu reproduzir tal proeza.

“Garotas aos berros lançavam-se contra a polícia” "Foi um pandemônio

absoluto. Todos entraram em algum tipo de estado, quase como um hipnotismo

coletivo... Eu nunca tinha visto nada parecido" Informou alguns policiais que ajudaram

a proteger a banda dos fãs no aeroporto. Abaixo, podemos ver uma ótima foto que

Mas o que, no final das contas, esses quatro rapazes de Liverpool estavam

fazendo nos Estados Unidos?

Os Beatles tiveram doze canções na lista da Billboard. As primeiras cinco

posições eram todas dos Beatles, mais as posições 31°, 41°, 46°, 58°, 65°, 68° e 79°.

Isso era fantástico para um grupo de garotos que apenas alguns meses antes estavam

lutando pela 17° posição. Então, preocupado com toda essa fama ser momentânea,

Brian Epstain, gerente dos Beatles, agendou a maior quantidade de shows e aparições

na TV possível.

Enquanto os Beatles eram os maiores na música do Reino Unido, nos Estados

Unidos, “The Ed Sullivan Show” era o maior programa de TV de todos os tempos. Se

você morasse nos EUA na década de 60, aos domingos, às 20h, você tinha que

assistir ao programa.

Se os Beatles eram os melhores no Reino Unido assim como Ed Sullivan nos

Estados Unidos, por que não juntar esses talentos? Por incrível que pareça tudo

aconteceu por acidente. Entre o final de outubro ou início de novembro, o voo de Ed

Sullivan, ou de um de seus representantes, estava atrasado no aeroporto de Heathrow

porque os Beatles estavam voltando de uma viajem fora de Londres. Havia tantos fãs

na pista de voo quando o avião da banda chegou que eles tiveram que manter

temporariamente as aeronaves no solo por medo de machucar os adolescentes.

Sullivan (ou um de seus representantes) estava em um desses aviões querendo saber

o que estava acontecendo, e eles explicaram para ele: Era a chegada de uma banda

Britânica. E, então, eles viram a loucura.

No dia 7 de fevereiro de 1964, os Beatles chegaram na América para uma série

de shows pelo país. A maior e mais importante apresentação ocorreu no dia 9 de

fevereiro. Durante o programa, 73 milhões de pessoas ficaram grudadas à tela, a

maior audiência da televisão americana até hoje.

A partir do momento em que Paul McCartney começou a cantar as primeiras

frases de “All My Loving”, não tinha mais volta. A Beatlemania se tornou uma onda que

cobriu cada canto dos Estados Unidos e do mundo. Eles tocaram apenas cinco

canções (All My Loving, Till There Was You, She Loves You, I Saw Her Standing

There e I Want To Hold Your Hand), mas foi o bastante para que os Beatles tivessem

os Estados Unidos a seus pés.

Durante o tempo em que os Beatles se apresentaram no Ed Sullivan Show, a

polícia não recebeu nenhuma ligação; o crime na cidade de Nova York diminuiu

significativamente. Como George gostava de dizer, até os criminosos pararam por

alguns minutos para assistir os Beatles. E ele está certo. É difícil não se emocionar ao

ouvir as melodias inesquecíveis com letras que criam um elo emocional entre a banda

e seus fãs.

No dia 9 de Fevereiro de 2014, Beatlemaníacos ao redor do mundo

comemoraram o aniversário de 50 anos da chegada dos Beatles na América. Para

celebrar a data, Paul McCartney e Ringo Starr se juntaram a diversos artistas no

show The Beatles: A noite que mudou a América (No Brasil, transmitido pela emissora

TNT).

Numa rara apresentação conjunta, Paul e Ringo homenagearam os dois

companheiros de banda, John Lennon (assassinado a tiros em 1980) e George Harrison

(vítima de câncer em 2001) "Nós éramos de uma banda chamada The Beatles, e sempre

que tocávamos George e John estavam conosco", disse Ringo para a plateia. McCartney

afirmou: "Nesta noite estamos lembrando os nossos amigos John e George".

Hoje, é difícil imaginar um mundo onde os Beatles não existam. Sem eles, nós

não teríamos 90% das bandas e canções que temos hoje. Também é difícil imaginar

alguém que não goste ou que, pelo menos, alguém que nunca tenha ouvido uma

música deles. Todos, mesmo aqueles que não gostam, já sofreram algum tipo de

influência. Que atire a primeira pedra quem nunca dançou “Twist and Shout” em uma

festa! Uma cantora brasileira, Zélia Duncan, disse: “Não sei como uma pessoa

consegue viver sem Beatles”. Outro cantor brasileiro, Milton Nascimento, disse: “São

os melhores... o resto é palhaçada!”.

As influências dos Beatles realmente estão em todos os lugares. Você conhece

Jude Law, o ator britânico? Seu nome é uma homenagem à música “Hey Jude”. O

músico Liam Gallagher nomeou seu filho mais velho Lennon como um tributo a John

Lennon. Em abril de 1990 dois cientistas, Brian Skiff e Edward Bowell, descobriram

quatro asteroides entre Marte e Júpiter. Sendo fãs de Beatles, você pode adivinhar

como eles nomearam os asteroides... Lennon, McCartney, Harrison e Starr.

Há tantas referências dos Beatles em nossas vidas que, se eu escrevesse

todas elas, isso se tornaria em um livro! Então, o fato é que: Eles estão aqui, lá e em

todos os lugares e, independente de você gostar ou não, todos nós vivemos em uma

Beatlemania!
