Concurrent Sessions 1 1. Ten Critical Questions for Healthcare Financial Management This session will identify ten critical financial questions that are often raised by healthcare boards and executives. The questions address areas of financial performance, profitability and cash targets, and facility-level operational issues of overall cost and price defensibility. The presentation will address each question using actual case-hospital data. The objectives for the session are, as follows:

To highlight ten critical questions frequently asked by US hospital governing boards

To determine relevant financial metrics to help answer the question

To illustrate how the use of comparative benchmarking can impact current and future organizational performance

Scott Houk, CPA, Senior Strategic Advisor, Cleverley + Associates. Scott consults with

hospital and healthcare organizations to identify financial and operating opportunities, as well as related strategies for performance improvement. Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Houk was a Senior Manager in the Health Sciences Advisory Services division of Ernst & Young. 2. What Does Your Organization Look Like to a Hacker? A Practical Approach to Start Understanding Your Risk

Page 4: Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity 63rd Annual Fall ......Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity 63rd Annual Fall Conference The Inn at St. John's 44045 Five Mile Road Plymouth,

There's plenty of recent press about major credit card breaches, but did you know that Protected Health Information (PHI) is 10x more valuable to hackers than credit card numbers? The healthcare industry is a lucrative target for hackers and their attacks are

highly sophisticated. This presentation will examine current hacking threats including Ransom Ware and Phishing and will be discussing how to better understand your organization's risk and what to do about it. The objectives for this session are:

Unique threats to the healthcare industry Update on current threats such as Ransom Ware & Phishing Best Practices for understanding your risk How to get started addressing your risk

David Howard, Vice President, NetWorks Group. David has over 20 years of experience helping organizations understand their unique risk exposure and identify appropriate investment in people, processes and technologies to mature their IT security profile. David believes that while being compliant doesn’t equate to being secure, it can be an important step along the way. David is an avid cyclist, runner and amateur woodworker. 3. Price Transparency: Where We Are Today but More Importantly Where We Need to Go

The confluence of rising patient out-of-pocket costs, demands of ensuring legislative compliance, and increasing pressures of reducing uncompensated care is driving providers to look more seriously to the future of price transparency.

Explain the market factors that are driving the need for price transparency. Understand the spectrum of price transparency adoption. Methods for achieving compliance and addressing patient needs. Factors beyond price to consider when defining your organizations price

transparency strategy. Heather Kawamoto, Vice President, Product Management, Recondo Technology. Heather is responsible for Recondo’s Empowered Patient Access platform. Primary responsibilities include understanding market trends, identifying new products to take to market, developing product roadmaps and working with clients on product and feature needs. Prior to Recondo, Heather was Senior Product Manager for Sybase, a large worldwide database and applications company. During her Sybase tenure, Heather was the Product Manager responsible for integration products that generated $25 million in annual revenue. 4. Using Data Analytics to Improve ACO Performance There is significant evidence that ACOs are not succeeding based on publicly available results. In 2014, more than half of Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) ACOs (181 of the 333) reduced costs compared to their benchmark, but less than one-third generated savings greater than their minimum savings rate (MSR), the threshold that

makes ACOs eligible to receive a share of those savings. That means more than two-thirds of ACOs are operating at a deficit as it is likely that not all of those who shared in savings generated enough savings to cover operating expenses. We will use a case study example of how our firm assessed one underperforming ACO using advanced data analytics and an in-depth review of their ACO reports. We will share the analytic findings,

Page 5: Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity 63rd Annual Fall ......Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity 63rd Annual Fall Conference The Inn at St. John's 44045 Five Mile Road Plymouth,

recommended initiatives, and delve deeply into one (or more as time allows) key initiatives to show how we think about its potential impact on ACOs’ performance. We will demonstrate how we created report cards to track physician and overall progress

on recommended performance improvement initiatives. Participants will learn how to:

• Uncover performance improvement opportunities using advanced data analytics • Design performance improvement initiatives to maximize chances of impacting

financial results • Develop performance improvement and physician report cards to track progress

Amanda Brown, MHA, Senior Associate, Veralon. Amanda assists Veralon clients with financial analysis, modeling, and business valuations. She prepares analyses and client deliverables for a variety of strategic and financial engagements. Her clients have included health systems, academic medical centers, community hospitals, ACOs, and CINs. Amanda holds a Master of Health Administration from the Sloan Program at Cornell University. She also received a BS in Biometry and Statistics from Cornell University with a minor in Applied Economics and Management.

Concurrent Sessions 2 5. Michigan Update and Medicaid Payment Methodology 2017 A Michigan update and strategic assessment of emerging healthcare trends in both

regulatory and legislative arenas some topics to be discussed are what is changing, the impact of recent CMS final and proposed rules, Medicaid Reimbursement and other current Medicaid topics, and national changes that may impact healthcare in Michigan

participation in the Healthcare Financial Management Association, the American Hospital Association, and state hospital association finance and policy group. Her previous employment includes Sparrow Hospital, Burroughs and Ernst & Ernst.

6. Creating a Culture of Success No matter what business you’re in, your success can very often boil down to one thing, your people culture. You may offer the very best medical care for your patients with the big dollars to promote it, but it’s the people that will really define how successful you are.

Your employees have the power to make or break your brand.

Page 6: Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity 63rd Annual Fall ......Waves of Change, Oceans of Opportunity 63rd Annual Fall Conference The Inn at St. John's 44045 Five Mile Road Plymouth,

A deeply embedded culture of success inspires loyalty in employees and makes them want to be a part of a team. It motivates people to do the right thing, not just the easy thing. At companies with winning cultures, people not only know what they should do,

they know why they should do it. This session will look at:

• The financial impact of the patient experience within the revenue cycle

• How culture can drive patient satisfaction • How to create a culture focused on patient satisfaction utilizing the FISH Philosophy

Brian Garver, Vice President, KeyBridge Medical Revenue Care. Brian is a passionate,

dynamic speaker and facilitator who brings energy and enthusiasm to everything he

does. His excitement is contagious when speaking about patient experience and how the

revenue cycle plays a large, connected role in overall patient satisfaction. Brian Garver

brings over 20 years of sales/marketing leadership and experience to KeyBridge. As VP

of Sales and Marketing, Garver’s seasoned, cross-functional expertise is a critical asset

when building long-term, results driven partnerships with both current and prospective

clients. Garver is a 2005 graduate of Allen-Lima Leadership (ALL) as well as an active

member of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) and the Healthcare

Financial Management Association (HFMA).

7. Shifting Medicare Reimbursements From Volume to Value

Given the evolution of healthcare with a focus on population health and new payment models, it is essential that clinical healthcare providers, operational leaders and financial professionals collaborate their efforts to increase quality and reduce costs. A close

partnership between the financial, operational and clinical professionals encourages shared goals for the health system as a whole with a focus on the impact we have as leaders within the particular organization.

This session will discuss:

Shifting Medicare reimbursements from volume to value. Maximizing payments via clinical and financial collaboration on new payment

models such as bundled payments, capitation, gainsharing and the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP).

Introduce key metrics for tracking under Triple Aim (improving the patient experience of care, improving the health of populations and reducing the per capita cost of care) and organizational tactical reporting.

Other accounting and reporting considerations.

8. Strategic Planning in a Sea of Change

Is strategic planning still relevant in the sea of change that now exist in healthcare. Not only is it relevant but absolutely necessary for success. Good strategic planning should

answer three basic questions for any organization. First, where do we want to go? Second, where are we now? Third, what do we have to do to close the gap? Key learning objectives:

Why is Strategic Planning still relevant? How can we develop a simple plan? Why is communication of the plan so important?

Do’s and don’ts of Strategic Planning.

With a plethora of significant planning issues on our minds, from population health to consolidation, properly building and maintaining a highly performing physician network is critical to a healthcare organization's success. It is essential to recruit physicians to employed networks who are culturally compatible and will foster ongoing cultural compatibility. Leadership, not just recruiters, needs to be engaged in this foundational process to ensure, as best we can in this environment of physician shortage and ultra-competitive physician recruitment, its success.

Provide an overview of the current competitive recruitment environment for physicians: supply, demand, and successful recruitment strategies.

Establish guidelines for retention techniques that start the moment an agreement is signed - it is never too early - and review an assessment tool to address cultural compatibility.

Review a case study of complex recruitment efforts, with a focus on how leading

with cultural compatibility in recruitment as well as on-going retention.
