WoRKsHoPs eDItoRIALFür alle, die zum Ende des Festivals noch Energie übrig haben, gibt’s auch am Sonn-tag Programm – und zwar Workshops, Workshops, Workshops: Los geht’s um 12:45 mit einem Interview-Training mit Me-dienexpertin Bettina Ruprechter. Parallel dazu informiert MICA-Fachreferent Rai-ner Praschak über richtiges Veranstalten. Um 14:00: Die Verwertungsgesellchaften AKM und austro mechana stellen sich vor. Ab 14:30 stehen Daniel Kubera und Anna Obermeier Rede und Antwort in Sachen Konzertfotografi e für Einsteiger. Vicky Höcht, Mitbegründerin von Local Heroes Austria, leitet parallel eine Diskussion zum Thema „Bandcontest der Zukunft“. Im An-schluss folgen noch Präsentationen von Sixtus Preiss Elektronik und Masterlizer, ei-nem neuen Online-Mastering-Service. Alle Workshops fi nden in der Festivalzentrale in der Alten Post statt.

Das letzte Konzert ist gerade erst verklun-gen und schon interessiert uns nur noch: Wie kann es mit Waves Vienna weiterge-hen? Um das Festival im nächsten Jahr noch besser zu machen, brauchen wir dei-nen Input! for those of you who’ve still got some en-ergy left at the end of the festival we’ve got something to do on sunday as well – workshops, workshops, workshops: the day will kick off at 12.45 pm with an interview coaching by media expert Bettina ruprech-ter. at the same time, mica specialist rainer Praschak will talk about how to successfully organise events. at 2 pm: the collecting so-cieties aKm and austro mechana are going to present themselves. from 2.30 pm on-ward, daniel Kubera and anna obermeier will answer your questions concerning con-cert photography for beginners. simultane-ously, local Heroes austria founder Vicky Höcht is going to lead a discussion about

“band contests of the future”. after that: presentations by sixtus Preiss Elektronik and masterlizer, a new online mastering ser-vice. all workshops take place at the festi-val centre @ alte Post.

the last concert has only just ended and already we’re interested in one thing: how can we improve Waves Vienna in the fu-ture? in order to make the festival even better next year, we need your input! tell us what you liked, what you didn’t like, what we should change, and what you want more of. Wie viele Menschen passen auf eine Büh-ne? Wie viele Haare auf einen Kopf? Wie viel Energie braucht ein Festival? Wie viele Hände bei der Umsetzung? Die eine oder andere Frage konnte in den vergangenen Tagen geklärt werden (26 schmusende SängerInnen auf die Theater-Bühne im KIP, mehr Haare, als man für möglich halten würde, bei Ebony Bones). Andere werden wohl unbeantwortet bleiben. Eines ist aber sicher: Jeder einzelne der unendlich vielen Handgri� e, jeder Seiten- und Trommel-schlag, jedes gesungene und geschriebene Wort, jedes Bier zu viel (oder zu wenig) und vor allem jeder und jede Einzelne vor, hinter und auf der Bühne machen auch die fünfte Ausgabe des Waves Vienna so be-sonders. In diesem Sinne: Danke fürs Da-beisein und bis nächstes Jahr! How many people fi t onto a stage? How many hairs onto a head? How much energy do you need for a festival? How many hands to make it happen? some questions could be answered during the last few days (26 kissing singers on the theatre stage at KiP; in the case of Ebony Bones, more hairs than one might think possible). oth-ers will probably remain unanswered. But one thing is for sure: every single one of the countless tasks, every drumbeat and played note, every word sung or written, every beer too much (or to few), and, par-ticularly, every single person in front of, behind, and on stage made the fi fth edi-tion of Waves Vienna as special as it was. on that note: thank you for coming and see you next year!

LeHNeNAm letzten Festivaltag wurde es noch einmal richtig laut. Pünktlich um 19 Uhr bespielten Lehnen mit ihrem Post-Rock den Red Bull Brandwagen. Das Rock-Quartett – zwei Wie-ner und zwei Amerikaner, die eine gemein-same A� nität zu lärmiger Musik pfl egen – präsentierte am Waves Vienna sein viertes Album „Reaching over Ice and Waves“. Es kommt mit wenig Text aus, hat dafür aber umso mehr E� ektpedal-Einsatz vorzuwei-sen. Der Sound, den Lehnen auf dem beto-nierten Eislaufplatz dabei kreierten, versetz-te die Location in eine düstere, fast schon mystische Kulisse. Zwei E-Gitarren, Bass und viel Hall sorgten für sphärische Klanginstal-lationen, die schwer von den umgebenden Gebäuden abprallten. Ab der Mitte wurde es eindeutig darker, schneller und härter – Leh-nen klangen dann fast schon nach Metal. Die Bandmitglieder waren performancetech-nisch mit vollem Körpereinsatz dabei und setzten auf große Gesten. Manch einer könn-te es als Overacting abstempeln, am Eis-laufplatz funktionierte es aber und steckte das Publikum an. on the last day of Waves Vienna, the volume got turned up once more. at 7 pm sharp lehnen performed their post rock at the red Bull Brandwa-gen. the four-piece – two Viennese and two americans with a common affi nity for noisy music – presented their fourth album, “reaching over ice and Waves”, at the festival. the lyrics are relatively sparse, but the guys use plenty of eff ects units. the sound that lehnen produce on the concrete skating rink turned the location into a sinister, almost mystical setting. two electric guitars, bass, and lots of reverb made for atmospheric sound installations which were refl ected from the surround-ing buildings. after the fi rst half of the gig, things got darker, faster, and harder – lehnen almost sounded like a metal band at this point. the band members gave it their all during the performance, not shy to use dramatic gestures. some might call it overacting, but at this special location it worked and the audience was excited. tEXt micHaEla PicHlEr

eBoNY BoNesEbony Thomas begann eigentlich als Schauspielerin, bis ihr jemand sagte, sie soll es doch mal als Sängerin probieren. Das war niemand geringerer als Rat Sca-bies von der Band The Damned. Seitdem macht sie weltweit Bühnen unter dem Na-men Ebony Bones unsicher. Das obligatori-sche Kostüm fehlte auch bei ihrem Auftritt am Waves Vienna nicht. So kunterbunt wie ihre Klamotten gab sich auch ihre Musik. Von Hard Rock bis Indie-Pop war alles dabei, Hauptsache, es war durchgeknallt und intensiv. Begonnen hat die Show mit dem Hit „W.A.R.R.I.O.R.“, der schon erah-nen ließ, wie der restliche Abend verlaufen würde: laut und wild. Die gebürtige Lon-donerin nutzte die recht dicht bestückte Bühne des Porgy & Bess so gut es ging, animierte das Publikum und ließ ihrer Energie freien Lauf. Genau diese explosive Art zeichnet Ebony Bones aus. Ein würdi-ger Abschluss des Festivals! Ebony thom-as actually started out as an actress until someone suggested she should try sing-ing. that someone was none other than rat scabies of the band the damned. Ever since, she’s been playing stages all across the globe under the alias Ebony Bones. as always, she performed in a col-ourful costume at Waves Vienna – and her music is just as multifaceted as her cloth-ing style. anything from hard rock to in-die pop is allowed, as long as it’s freaky and loud. the show kicked off wih the hit “W.a.r.r.i.o.r.”, which already gave the audience an idea of what the rest of the evening would be like: noisy and wild. the londoner made use of the rather crowded stage as best as she could, animated the audience, and was overfl owing with en-ergy. this explosive nature is what makes Ebony Bones unique. a worthy conclusion of the festival! tEXt BENJamiN aGostiNi

YoUNG ReBeL setVon Thees Uhlmann höchstpersönlich ent-deckt, bespielen die fünf Briten von Young Rebel Set seit einigen Jahren die Festival-bühnen des europäischen Festlands. Am letzten Waves-Tag erweisen sie als einer der Haupt-Acts in der Alten Post den war-tenden Fans die Ehre. Noch bevor sie über-haupt auf der Bühne stehen, werden sie schon fl eißig umjubelt. Kein Wunder also, dass gleich der erste Song „Lion’s Mouth“ für euphorische Mitsing-Stimmung sorgt. Sänger Matty Chipchase wirkt von Anfang an motiviert, prostet dem Publikum zu und vermittelt vor allem eines: Das ist seine Show und die will er auch gebührend feiern! Da sein Ego o� enbar zu groß für die über-schaubare Bühne ist, müssen die restlichen Bandmitglieder für die ersten drei Zuga-ben weichen. Die Qualität der Solo-Perfor-mance hat es aber in sich und macht damit Chipchases Narzissmus-Anfall wieder wett. Die abschließenden zwei Nummern spielen Young Rebel Set dann zur Freude aller Fans doch noch gemeinsam und fordern diese zu einem letzten „Prost!“ auf. discovered by thees uhlmann of the German band tomte, the fi ve Brits of Young rebel set have been playing at festivals all across Europe for a few years now. on the last day of Waves, they performed for their fans as one of the main acts at alte Post. the audience was cheering them on before they even went on stage. Not surprising, then, that already the fi rst song, “lion’s mouth”, had the crowd singing along enthusiastically. singer matty chipchase was motivated right from the beginning, raised his glass to the festival visitors, and made one thing very obvi-ous: this was his show, and he was going to celebrate it appropriately! since his ego is apparently too big for the stage, the other band members had to leave for the fi rst three songs of the encore. But the solo per-formance was quite something and made up for chipchase’s narcissistic fi t. much to the joy of the fans, the last two songs were then performed by the entire band, who left with a fi nal “Prost!”. tEXt micHaEla PicHlEr
