Pre-calculus Summer Packet Summer 2017

Attn: In coming Pre-calculus Students & Parents/Guardians

This packet contains topics that you are expected to know prior to entering Pre-calculus. You have learned these skills over the

past few years. These examples focus on both mathematical skills and problem solving. Pre-Calculus is a critical course and one

of the best predictors of college success. Mastery of the problem solving skills outlined in this packet is a critical baseline for your

success. This packet should be completed independently and turned in with completed work on the first day of school for a

grade. Upon your completion, your parent/guardian needs to sign the packet.

Make sure you understand how to do the problems. If you are unsure of how to do these problems, utilize some of the resources

below.

A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is HIGHLY recommended for Precalculus and future math courses both at Watertown High

school and in college.

We look forward to working with you in Pre-calculus and remind you that success is built by the efforts you make every day.

Below are helpful links to help you remember some topics.

Resources

Khan Academy Take control of your learning by working on the skills you choose at your own pace. ... Math, science,

computer programming, history, art, economics, and more.

Algebasics has video tutorials explaining the basics of algebra, equations, ratio and proportion, absolute value,

polynomials, factoring, linear equations, radicals, applications, and much more.

Algebra-Class.com offers help with solving equations, graphing equations, writing equations, inequalities, functions,

exponents and monomials, polynomials, and the quadratic equation. It also has a list of resources.

Algebra.help contains lessons on topics that include equations, simplifying, factoring, distribution, and trinomials, as

well as equation calculators and worksheets. This site also has an extensive list of math resources and study tips.

Algebra Help covers topics such as fractions, percents, decimals, algebraic expressions, addition, multiplication, and

word problems. Each section includes explanations and examples.

College-Cram.com allows students to choose the algebra subject they are struggling with from a drop down menu, select

the appropriate chapter, and pick your resources. The pages will feature formula solvers, bottomless worksheets,

flashcards, quizzes, interactive overviews, and brief lessons and study sheets.

Interactive Mathematics has a large section on algebra, including information on factoring and fractions, the quadratic

equation, exponents and radicals, systems of equations, matrices and determinants, and inequalities.

Math Expression has videos, worksheets, and lessons to help you develop your algebra skills. Math topics include

algebra, exponents, symmetry, fractions, measurements, angles, and more. The site also includes a list of useful resources.

Purplemath contains lessons with explanations on everything from absolute value and negative numbers to intercepts,

variables, and factoring. In addition, this site includes a forum that allows students to ask questions and receive answers,

as well as a list of homework tips and guidelines.

The packet is expected to be completed for the first day of class.

Must show your work in the packet.

Algebra Skills needed to be successful in Pre-calculus

Functions and Their graphs

Determine whether a relation represents a function

Representing a function algebraically & graphically

Using function notation to evaluate functions

Identifying the domain and range of functions

Analyzing real world applications of functions

Determine the relative maximum and minimum of functions

Combination of functions (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide functions) and their domain

Find the composition of functions and determine the domain

Verify if two functions are inverses algebraically and graphically

Find the inverse of a function algebraically

Determine if functions are one-to-one

Above are the topics that will be covered in Unit 1. There will be an assessment covering Unit 1 topics

within the second week of class.

MUST SHOW ALL WORK THAT IS NEEDED TO SOLVE A PROBLEM FOR CREDIT!!!!

Composition of functions

f(g(x)) f o g (x) "f of g of x" f(x) = 2x2 - 3x g(x)= x + 1

f(g(x))= you are plugging the g(x) function into the f(x) function = 2(x + 1)2 - 3(x + 1) Now use algebra to clean up

= 2(x2 +2x + 1) -3x -3 = 2x2 + 4x + 2 -3x - 3

= 2x2 + x - 1

Domain of f(g(x)): Need to look at the domain of the Input function (g(x) )and the domain of the final composition. Look for restrictions and combine the domains.

Decomposing functions Think about your parent functions and let f(x) be the parent function.

Inverse functions

x & y values switch

Verify Inverse functions: Algebraically: f(g(x)) = x g(f(x)) = x

Graphically: The function and its inverse should reflect over the line y = x

.

Finding inverse functions--checking your solution perform a composition with your solution and the original function f(f-1(x)) = x & f-1f(x))= x or graph your solution and the original function graphs should reflect over the line

y = x.

Find the Inverse of the following functions

1. 2.

3. 4.

Verify that the following functions are inverses.

1. 2.

Page 13: Watertown Public Schools Pre-calculus Summer Packet

One-to-One: If a function is one to one no x & y values repeat. Graph will need to pass both the vertical and horizontal line test. It is a FUNCTION and has an inverse that is a FUNCTION
