by Principal Sherry Harms

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our families for their patience and support while we had our school shutdown due to influenza. It was a difficult decision to close

the campuses, but one that we needed to make. We do not need to make these days up. Let's just hope for good winter weather for the rest of the season!

Thank you for celebrating Fat Tuesday with WCS! We had a great time eating pancakes, participating in the cake walks, and building our own ice cream sundaes! Thank you to our volunteers for making it a success. It was an awesome opportunity to celebrate with our school community before Lent began.

Now we enter into this time of preparation and reflection. We contemplate sacrifice – the sacrifice of Christ, as well as our own Lenten sacrifice. Each campus will take part in Stations of the Cross. The St. Bernard Campus will hold theirs on Tuesdays at 2:30 from March 3-April 7. The St. Henry Campus will do theirs on Fridays beginning at 2:15 from February 28-April 3. There will not be Stations on Friday, March 27 during spring break. The Faith and Family groups provided a Lenten handout in our family envelopes that provides families with ideas to complete at home. Each campus will participate in a Penny War where the money collected will be given to a charitable cause.

May you have a blessed and fruitful Lenten season!

W ow, time sure flies! It's difficult to believe it’s March!

So far in 3K we have met new friends and learned so much.

In February, we had a Valentine’s party. Each child made their own box to hold their valentines and students enjoyed handing out their valentines to their classmates.

We also learned about dinosaurs. We learned that dinosaurs are extinct, and we learned the names of a few dinosaurs.

Pizza shop was a big hit in dramatic play. Students enjoyed taking orders and making pizzas for students and teachers!

Each student is working hard on tracing their name and we are working on recognizing their name and some of the letters in their name. We have also been working on naming shapes and colors. Students enjoy playing the fishing game while working on these skills!

In the months ahead, we look forward to learning about zoo animals, insects, and ocean animals. We will visit the public library each month, and we welcome warmer weather to play outside!

Geography Bee

“B efore Phoenix became an official city, it was called Pumpkinville. Phoenix is the largest city in which

southwestern state?”* (Answer is below)

Do you know the answer? This was a potential question for the Geography Bee. The National Geographic Society School Wide Geography Bee was held at St. Henry Campus on February 4. Each class from fourth grade to eighth grade held a preliminary bee in their classrooms to determine two finalists to participate in the school wide bee. This year’s finalists were Liam Field and Lillian Hady from fourth grade, Sarah Johns and Ellie Mudler from fifth grade, Andrew Harms and Makenah Novotny from sixth grade, Eliot Roethle and Izze Kresnak from seventh grade, and Ximena Ruiz and Briana Moreno from eighth grade. The winner of the school level bee was Andrew Harms with Liam Field being the runner-up. Andrew took a state qualifying test that is administered online.

Faith & Family

C ore Value: Charity- Loving god above all things and selflessly loving one another.

Scripture: “God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him.” John 4:16 St. Thomas Aquinas considers charity the greatest of the theological virtues. He defines it as “the friendship of man for God”, which “unites us to God”. According to Aquinas, charity is an absolute requirement for happiness, which he holds as man’s last goal. Using the Catechism and Aquinas’ definition of charity, we are expected to love God above all things for His own sake, and love our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. During this Lenten season, dedicate your prayers, fasting or almsgiving to uniting yourself to God, bringing you closer to man’s last goal- happiness. Use your Lenten prayers to ask for God’s help to love all people as you love yourself. Think about a habit that keeps you from answering God’s call and give up that habit for Lent. Find a way during Lent to give of yourself to those who are less fortunate. Join the Watertown Catholic community during Holy Week and attend all the services leading up to Easter Sunday Mass.

W hat an exciting month February has been! February is the shortest month of the year, but it is filled with many special events. It is Dental Health Month.

Dr. William Buchholz, Jr., a dentist who graduated from St. Bernard School, visited our school and demonstrated the importance of taking care of our teeth. We are grateful for the bag of dental products he gave each one of us. The hundredth day of school finally arrived on February 13th. Each day, since the first day of school, we read from the book Emily’s First One Hundred Days of School and looked forward to this day. Everyone shared the 100 items they brought to school. We made posters, 100 day necklaces, and wore our 100 day glasses which we’re sure helped make us look 100 days smarter. The next day we celebrated Saint Valentine’s Day

with a great party. Now we are practicing our readings for the Ash Wednesday Mass and preparing for Lent. In Religion class we colored “Alleluia” banners. These will be placed in a box and “buried” until Easter to remind us that we don’t use the “Alleluia” during Lent. We also learned we don’t count Sunday as a part of the forty days of Lent. This day is a celebration of the Resurrection and therefore not a day for fasting. One Religion homework assignment we enjoy is completing chapter reviews on the internet and sending the results to school. No paperwork!!

Presidents’ Day was celebrated on the third Monday of the month. With a little help from our parents we did research on a president. We displayed our new knowledge on poster boards, and reported what we learned to the class. Many interesting facts were shared such as our 10th President, John Tyler, had two wives and fifteen children. Of all the presidents, he had the most children.

In math class we found patterns on the hundred chart and counted by twos, fives, and tens to 100. We learned to estimate. Now we are practicing our estimation skills. We take turns taking home the estimation jar and filling it with a variety of items. Each day we anxiously wait to celebrate with those students whose estimate is closest to the correct number of items in the jar. Some students may even award a prize.

Each day our reading and writing skills are growing. We are working to improve our reading comprehension skills by reading Accelerated Reading Books and taking tests on chrome books. We learned the difference between fact and opinion. After we read the book The Best Part of Me we each picked one part of us to describe. Now we have our own book that tells what makes our class special and unique. All parts of us are important and we are all an important part of the Body of Christ.

This year we even get an extra day to celebrate in February for it is leap year. We look forward to the exciting educational experiences and celebrations we’ll have the last third of this school year.
