• Nairobi is the capital city of Kenya

– It has a population of about 4 million

– The city is an economic hub for East Africa Region

• Under vision 2030, Nairobi city is to be a world class commercial center

– Improving WATSAN services for the city is therefore a high priority

Environmental Management and Coordination Act,1999 (EMCA)

• Provides for the establishment of the framework law on

environmental management and conservation …...

The Standard Act, (Chapter 496 of the Laws of Kenya)

• Establishes Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)

• KEBS have set standards for drinking water in Kenya

Water Act of 2016

• Establishes Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB)

• WASREB regulate water services

– Under the regulations WASREB provide Guidelines for

monitoring drinking water quality

WATER QUALITY MONITORING IN

NAIROBI: SAMPLING POINTS

• The geo-referenced sampling points

cover the food chain from source to tap.

– Selection is based on areas prone

to contamination such as

unprotected sources, loops,

reservoirs, low-pressure zones,

extremes ends of the system,

densely populated areas, public

institutions;

• Sampling points are uniformly

distributed throughout a network

Establishing of Nairobi Upper Tana

Water Fund

• The Nature Conservation has

mobilized stakeholders to establish

a water fund for Nairobi and Upper

Tana to support protection of the

head waters

• It is an endowment fund supported

by the stakeholders’ contribution

• NCWSC water tariff has a

provision for catchment

conservation

• Stakeholders of the fund include

private and public sector

services in Low income settlements

• To ensure affordability of the services to

low-income households

• Innovative financing of connection through

micro-credit scheme.
