The Goyder Institute for Water Research facilitates dialogue between science and policy. It has never been more important to come together and celebrate the Institute’s capacity to deliver the scientific basis for policy solutions that underpin the sustainable development of South Australia.

The Water Forum 2017 promises two days filled with stimulating discussion, technical and academic presentations from an outstanding group of water industry leaders plus unique networking, career and business development opportunities.

Within two concurrent steams of presentations there is a blend of topics to appeal to a wide audience – all of which demonstrate latest developments in South Australia’s water research and how we are working towards developing a sustainable water industry into the future.

PROF ANDY PITMAN

Centre Director, ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science

DR JOHN WILLIAMS FTSE

Adjunct Professor, ANU Crawford School of Public Policy

John is a founding member of the Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and holds the prestigious Farrer Memorial Medal for achievement and excellence in agricultural science. He is one of Australia’s most respected and trusted scientists, with extensive experience in providing national and international thought-leadership in natural-resource management, particularly in agricultural production and its environmental impact. John retired recently after nearly six years as Commissioner of the NSW Natural Resources Commission. He was former Chief Scientist, NSW Department of Natural Resources following his retirement from CSIRO as Chief of Land and Water in 2004. John is currently Adjunct Professor in Public Policy and Environmental Management at the Crawford School of the Australian National University and Adjunct Professor, Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, Institute Water, Land and Society, Charles Sturt University.

Andy is a climate modeller with a major focus on terrestrial processes in global and regional climate models. He has explored the global and regional impacts of land cover change and currently co-leads the Land use change: identification of robust impacts project. He has interests in climate extremes and how these are likely to change in the future. His leadership and research experience is extensive nationally and internationally. Between 2004 and 2010 he convened the ARC Research Network for Earth System. Since 2011 he has been the Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science. Andy is a member of the Academy of Science’s National Committee for Earth System Science and the NSW Minister for the Environment’s Science Advisory Committee. He is closely affiliated with the World Climate Research Program (WCRP). He was chair of the WCRP’s Land Committee for the Global Land Atmosphere System Study from 2006 to 2008, and is now on its Science Steering Committee.

CRAIG WILKINS

Chief Executive, Conservation Council of South AustraliaCraig has worked in the areas of public health, social services, environmental change and politics for the last 25 years in a variety of not-for-profit and government organisations, as well as in Parliament House.

For the last three years he has been the Chief Executive of the state’s peak environment body, the Conservation Council of SA. Craig is a passionate believer in collective altruism - the act of people generously working together on behalf of others and the planet we call home.

JIM MCGUIRE

General Manager - Strategy, Performance & Innovation, SA WaterAt SA Water Jim leads development of strategy and business planning as well as driving a strong performance management focus. The Group helps the Corporation to generate new ideas and bring them to life and ensures the way of working are aligned and continually improved. Jim joined SA Water in 2011 and in 2014 became General Manager Commercial & Business Development.

Jim’s career prior to SA Water has included key leadership roles in both the private and public sector, including the energy, and banking, as well as consulting.

KATHRYN ANDERSON

Deputy Director Enterprise, New Venture InstituteThe New Venture Institute was established in June 2013 to create connections between university and businesses, organisations and entrepreneurs outside of the academic environment. Kathryn’s work there fosters these connections to provide real economic advantage to the partners and communities involved.

Her career spans entrepreneurship, relationship management, and education partnerships with a focus on how career, workforce and economic development support each other. She is the co-editor of Knowledge in Action: university-community engagement in Australia, and has spoken at conferences and workshops across Australia.

JANE DOOLAN

Professorial Fellow in Natural Resource Governance, University of CanberraPrior to her role at the University of Canberra Jane was the Deputy Secretary for Water in the Victorian Department of Environment and Primary Industries and has more than 27 years of experience in the sustainable management of catchments and water resources. She recently completed a term as a Commissioner with the National Water Commission. She is also the Chair of the Murray-Darling Basin Freshwater Research Centre and a Director of Western Water.

IAN HUNTER MLC

Minister for Water and the River Murray, Minister for Climate ChangeIan graduated from Flinders University with a Bachelor of Science (Honours), majoring in Microbiology and Genetics.

After graduating from university, Ian worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Clinical Immunology at Flinders Medical Centre, and was the State Secretary of the Australian Labor Party.

Ian was first elected to the South Australian Legislative Council in 2006 and became a Minister in 2011.

Ian’s policy interests include science and science education, climate change and environmental sustainability, reconciliation and social justice.

SANDY PITCHER

Chief Executive, Department of Environment, Water and Natural ResourcesSandy Pitcher commenced as the Chief Executive of DEWNR in January 2015, where she has focused on includes developing a vibrant nature-based tourism strategy for South Australia, connecting people to parks and delivering on the state’s ambitious Climate Change agenda.

Sandy was the Deputy Chief Executive of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet for 5 years.

In 2012 Sandy was awarded the South Australian Telstra Business Woman of the year for the Community and Public sector category, and went on to win the national title in November 2012.

Sandy was educated at the University of Adelaide and has degrees in law and the humanities.

PROF KRISTOFER HELGEN

Professor of Biological Sciences, University of AdelaideProf Helgen’s research draws on field expeditions and historical specimens in museums to document the richness of nature and to study environmental change.

He is passionate about conservation and communicating the importance of science to society.

Previously Curator of Mammals at the Smithsonian Institution’s US National Museum of Natural History, Prof Helgen has named dozens of previously overlooked species of living mammals and led major expeditions throughout the tropics.
