Well here we are in the last

quarter of 2016, with only 12 more

weeks before Christmas. How did we

get here so fast? How quickly time

seems to sift by. Yet there is much to

do before the year is over.

Our democracy will once again

select a person to fill the highest office

of our government. And what a show

our political process has been for the

last several years building up to this

event. The choice of candidates from

our two major parties are diametrically

opposite. Some are suggesting that the

Republican Party is imploding upon its

self. I can’t think of a time in our recent

history when clear honest thinking

needs to be exercised and every indi-

vidual needs to vote. Our vote for this

election will shape our countries future

for generations to come. I encourage

each and every one of us to go to the

poles and vote for the people who

would most likely govern from the

values that you hold dear.

During this last quarter of the

year we as a church will also affirm

those who have responded to our needs

of service, by voting in our new slate of

officers. Many are continuing on in

places of service and we are grateful for

their faithfulness, others are stepping

forward in new opportunities. Let’s

pray for all those who serve our church

body in places of leadership.

We will also be setting the

framework of next year’s ministry by

projecting our budget. Each line item of

our budget tells a story of how we seek

together to fulfill the mission of our

church. Each of us will also have the

opportunity to project what part we

will play through the submitting of our

pledge cards. Declaring before God and

our faith community how we will give

back a portion of our resources to God,

for the mission of our church. May we

each see this opportunity as a means of

God’s grace at work in our lives.

There is much yet to do.

Let’s stay the course.

Pastor Ron

MODERATOR’S OCTOBER REPORT from Lorraine Wong

What a joyful time to present our 2017 Council Slate which CCH members

will be asked to confirm at our December Membership meeting. So

many of the CCH leaders chose to recommit. Mahalo. I will be replaced

by Arnold Hirotsu. His affable style will be a refreshing change from me.

Two other changes will be Gwen Murakami for Secretary and Sherwood

Chock will co-chair Music/Choir with Lei Jayne Moy. I encourage the

ministries to engage ‘new’ people to celebrate the joy of serving. The

Stewardship Fair held in September acknowledged how much fun it is to

serve the Lord.

YOUTH GROUP MISSION TRIP FUNDRAISER By Kacie Kato

Hello Everyone! The youth group is planning to go on a mission trip to

either York, Pennsylvania or to Loveland, Colorado during the summer of

2017. To help make this possible, they will be doing a gift card fundraiser.

You can purchase all kinds of gift cards for full-value including gift cards

for restaurants, retail vendors, and travel vendors. A certain percentage of

your purchase will be refunded to the youth group.

The Gift Card Order Form is available on the CCH website

(www.cchonolulu.org), at the back of the sanctuary and in the church office.

If you are going to buy gift cards, please submit the required form and payment by November 6, 2016. You can

submit your order and payment to the church office during regular hours or to the Youth Group in the Stephen Mark

Hall on October 30, 2016 and November 6, 2016 between 10:00 am-11:00 am. If you rather mail it in, please send it

to Christian Education Director, Kyle Lovett, at 2345 Nuuanu Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96817. Please make your

checks out to Community Church of Honolulu.

Gift Card orders will available for pick up from the church around December 4 and December 11, 2016 from the

Youth group. They can be picked up in the Stephen Mark Hall at about 10:00 am – 11:00 am after church service.

Questions about this fundraiser can be directed to Kami Kato at [email protected].

Thank you so much for your support!

is available for all from birth through kindergarten in the nursery during our worship service. Care starts at 8:55 a.m.

In November, we will again be filling Thanksgiving food

bags for needy families. It's not too early to bring in the

following specified canned goods. We are requesting

Spam, Vienna Sausages, Tuna, Cream of Mushroom

Soup, Pork and Beans, Corned Beef Hash, Canned Corn

and Instant Saimin.

A signup sheet will be posted in Stephen Mark Hall

and donations can be left at the church's front door or at

Stephen Mark Hall on Sundays. Members can help to

assemble these food bags on Sunday, Nov. 13 in Stephen

Mark Hall. We are also accepting monetary donations if

you are unable to bring in canned goods.

Our goal is 25 Thanksgiving bags at $50 per bag which

includes a $25 Foodland gift card in each bag. All extra

canned goods will be donated to the Hawaii Food Bank

and River of Life Mission.

One of the benefits is use of our church

facilities. If you are a member of CCH,

you are entitled to special rental rates.

This includes the Stephen Mark Hall, the

Leigh Hooley Room , the Founders’ Room,

and selected rooms in the Makai Bldg.

Call Ardis in the office and ask her

about availability and she let you know

what the charges are, if any. If there

are any questions, please see Richard

Wong, the Facilities Chair.

UPDATE: YOUTH MISSION TRIP 2017 Marti Taba, Co-Chair, Christian Education

The Youth Group and their parents met through the summer to discern what God may have in store for them in 2017. Having experienced a faith-changing work mission trip in 2014 (see the next page), the Youth have decided to try Group Youth Mission ‘s Week of Hope. The week will include being involved in a local service project in mixed teams of teenagers from across the United States. That work is the highlight of a wrap-around program of singing, prayer, on-site devotions, and opportunities to spend time with God. Given everyone’s schedules, they have chosen July 21-August 3, 2017 in York, Pennsylvania. Group Mission Trips started in 1977. Group Publishing, who create our children’s Sunday School curriculum, Vaca-tion Bible Sunday School, and Women’s Retreat material, have a time- tested record and decades of testimonials that show “providing opportunities for teenagers to grow closer to Jesus through serving others” is faith changing. The Youth are very grateful for the opportunity to not only provide service but to experience a different location and culture, and to work with teens who are very different from the ones they know at home and school. As the Christian Education Ministry is committed to providing this opportunity to all Youth regardless of personal financial resources, we will continue to fundraise. Bless and thank you to our congregation for being such strong supporters of our young people over the past several years! As a result, we already have more than 50% of the funds needed for this trip. We are finalizing our Youth Mission team and the Youth will provide regular updates on our activities throughout the year.

CAVE QUEST: 2016 VACATION BIBLE SUNDAY SCHOOL By: Amy Taba

The children performed a presentation and a song from VBS on August 21, 2016 and this is what they said: This summer the elementary kids participated in a program called Cave Quest. We learned about how Jesus is there for us and helps us if we are in a scary or dark place, such as a cave. We talked about how Jesus gives us hope. Like in the song, “Jesus is the Light”, when the world gets dark and lonely, His love illuminates. We also talked about His courage, direction, love and power.

One of our favorite activities was snack time! We made a cross with graham crackers to symbolize Jesus’ love for us. We also did many fun games! One of my favorites was when we laid down in a circle and tried to keep a volleyball in the air. It was challenging but very fun and exciting. The last experiences we had this summer were the activities in Deep Bible Quest and Imagination Stations. One of our favorite ones was the story about when Jesus walks on water. Uncle Paul mixed cornstarch and water and when we walked on it, it was solid. But when we stopped and doubted, we sunk in the goop. Overall, VBS was a very fun experience and we hope to do it again next summer! **VBS Coordinator’s note: Thank you, thank you to the many adult volunteers that made VBS possible –Song and Dance -Debbie Brede; Deep Bible Quest -Wayson Wong, Paul Murakami, Mona Chock, Eve Adams; Imagination Station- Wayson Wong, Alvin & Elisa Oshiro, Candee Lee, Kathy Young; Sports & Games- Thelma Nip, Art Lum; Cavern Café – Michelle Van Rafelghem, Carol Gunn, Annie Miller, Sandy Nishimura, Christi Tomisato. Thank you also to our Junior Leaders: Middle schoolers Kacie Kato, Amy Taba, and Aidan Tune. This article is overdue since it was omitted from the September issue of this newsletter. Thank you for your understanding!

September’s Song

It’s a long long time from May to Decembe

But I grow lazier when we reach September by the Ironic Chef

Feliz de Independencia Come Bueno!!! For the 8th consecutive year, Martha Hernandez and Ann Miller treated us to a fiesta to celebrate

Mexico’s independence from Spain. For those of you who are not up on Mexican history, Mexican Independence

Day is September 16th and not Cinco de Mayo which is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla which commemorates

an unlikely Mexican Army victory over (inept) French forces. Besides the Two Amigas, the Prep Team consisted of

Joe Lee, Bobo Nish, Arnold Hirotsu, and Nana Young. On the Plate: Carnitas quesadillas, black bean and

corn** chopped salad, chips, and Martha’s homemade Guacamole and Salsa. We had the usual Cleanup Crew of

Annony Gunn, Mich VR, Margaret Tom and Marian Chun. **OK, I’ll stop doing the Eye Tests. For all of you

who have complained over the years that the yellow in my articles are illegible, I have fixed the problem….

Can you see it now? Suelyn Tune ♥XOXO

Et Tu, Brute?

FYI: Julius Caesar’s supposed last words** to his buddy Brutus is actually a

historical fiction created by William Shakespeare in his work The Tragedy of

Julius Caesar. Caesar Cardini was heard to remark on July 4, 1924… “What,

all we have left to eat is romaine lettuce, croutons, lemon juice, Worcestershire

sauce, anchovies, egg yolks, garlic, olive oil and parmesan cheese.?” Hahaha,

smart eh you! On the Plate: Mini Naan bread with deconstructed Pesto sauce,

cheese pizzas, and Fellowship’s signature Wise Okole Caesar Salad. Prep Team

Wise Okole’s were Joe Lee, Bobo Nish, Nana Young, Robbie Wong, and Jenny

Son. We had the usual Cleanup Crew of Margaret Tom Annony Gunn, and

Marian Chun. You better be nice to them because SOON you will be washing

your own plates!!! **Actually Caesar’s last words were, “You should have gone

to see Francis Wong and had him sharpen your knives”.

Huang Xiansheng de Look Funn How many Iron Chefs does it take to pick up 70 rolls of artisanal look funn…3…2 to

carry boxes and 1 to find a handicapped parking space. For the second time this year

we presented an original taste treat for Hawaii. We commissioned Alice at Ying

Leong Look Funn on Kekaulike Mall to make a custom look funn roll with char sui,

shrimp, and cilantro. Bobo, Nana, Arnold, Anonny, and Ms. Misen Place shredded

the chicken for Chinese chicken salad.

Ethel and Wilfred Chong grew taro and made us their hun hao chi wu tao gou taro

cakes. The usual suspects did the dishes.

Here I am Lord The Stewardship Committee of Ryan Urabe, Sandy

Nishimura, Kathy Young, Carolyn Ching, Joe Lee, Art

Lum, and Pastor Ron Williams hosted another inspira-

tional Stewardship Fair. See Kathy Young’s write up for

the details. The Grill Team of Arnold Hirotsu, da Son,

Ryan Urabe, Art Lum, Joe Lee, and Preston Lum grilled the hotdogs. Ryan Urabe

(prospective 2018 Fellowship Chair?) made broke da mouth hotdog chili. April Lum

reminded everyone that the chili was a condiment and not a main course.
