I truly feel at home here in the Midlands. When I was growing up in Yorkshire, the Midlands seemed a far off place where people had funny accents. Now that I am living here – and have done for 15 years – it seems like the reverse is true.

I joined Mallory Court back in December 2001 as head chef and instantly fell in love with the area and the people. I came here after working in many one- and two-star Michelin properties throughout the UK, but I knew this was the place for my family to settle. I was thrilled to achieve a Michelin star in 2002, which confi rmed we’d made the right choice.

My fi rst memories of food were, as with many of you, of my grandmother and her cooking. She seemed to spend most of her life in the kitchen, working with seasonal ingredients to create delicious fare. Fresh fruit and vegetables would come from the local greengrocer in brown paper bags fi lled with a medley of delicious goods like juicy peaches, Thompson Seedless grapes and English strawberries. My grandmother’s apple pie has always been a family favourite, with apples stored in newspaper in her cellar after we’d all helped to pick them in her garden. I think this is where my love of seasonality has come from. A good chef will change their menu regularly to suit the season’s harvest, ensuring produce is always showcased at its ripest.

In recent years, the public has become much more conscious of the provenance of ingredients, meaning chefs and restaurants have had to up their game. As such, it’s a great time to eat out. It’s also great to be a part of this thriving industry in Warwickshire and Birmingham – with great produce, a diverse choice of restaurants and passionate individuals, it’s an exciting place to be, and it boasts an ever-evolving foodie scene.

Take a look through this guide to discover what’s on your doorstep – I guarantee the region has a lot to offer.

WaThe Dining Room is an elegant oak-panelled restaurant set within the magnifi cent grounds of the Mallory Court hotel. Upon arrival, we were greeted with a glass of Champagne and moreish canapés, before being shown to our table. We were also presented with the extensive drinks menu, which offers an array of carefully selected wine and a variety of tempting cocktails. After making our selections, our seven-course feast began – the perfect way to sample the offering at this three-AA-rosetted restaurant. Plates included mushroom cannelloni enhanced by Jerusalem artichoke, charred leek and truffl es, dressed Cornish crab paired with Granny Smith apple, and tender venison in Port sauce. My favourite course was wood pigeon with variations of beetroot, goat’s curd and savoury granola, while my partner’s top choice was pan-fried cod served with curried red lentils and caramelised caulifl ower. We concluded our incredible meal with a Coconut Daiquiri, salt-baked pineapple and passion fruit curd, and caramelised

white chocolate mousse. Each course was perfectly cooked and immaculately presented. The warm and welcoming hospitality from the waiting team throughout the evening was exceptional – they showed genuine passion for the food they were presenting and the service was faultless.Whether you visit for a special occasion or simply for a spot of indulgence, you are bound to be captivated by The Dining Room. We will defi nitely return.

SWThis grand, Gothic Revival-style country house sits within 40 acres of stunning grounds, and yet is easily accessible, situated only a 20 minute drive south of Stratford-upon-Avon. The interior is just as impressive as the hotel’s facade, thanks to the stained glass windows, ornate mirrors, 19th-century paintings and sparkling chandeliers.

We dined in the candlelit Oak Room, attended to by the warm and welcoming team. To begin, I sampled duck bonbons partnered with orange purée and roasted fi g, while my companion devoured his goat’s cheese, beetroot and walnut parfait. Both courses proved a wonderful start to our meal. To follow, I had diffi culty choosing from the mouth-watering selection, but eventually plumped for the grilled plaice. It was very well executed, served atop herb risotto with baby carrots, tenderstem broccoli and a citrus sauce. Meanwhile, my friend tucked into roast breast of duck accompanied by cranberry

sausage, fondant potato and creamed winter greens. Each dish was beautifully presented, and tasted wonderful.

It was a truly fi ne dining experience, and we can’t wait to return to sample the hotel’s afternoon tea, which is served on the terrace, in The Great Drawing Room or the Oak Room, or can be packed into a picnic with a blanket for those wishing to explore the beautiful grounds.

SoThe Malt Shovel at Barston is every bit the quintessential countryside pub. Visitors can choose to dine in the relaxed, inviting surroundings of the restaurant, or in the bar area where the open fi re and lively atmosphere greet you and ensure that you feel right at home.We were captivated by the menu, which showcases delicious, playful modern British dishes; many of which have gluten-free alternatives. My starter, a healthy super food salad of crushed avocado, blueberries, pomegranate, roasted pumpkin, beets, bulgur wheat, chia seeds and a boiled free-range egg was perhaps the best salad I have ever tasted. My partner’s seared scallops, accompanied by chorizo, Jerusalem artichoke purée and Clonakilty black pudding worked perfectly well and not a single morsel was left on the plate. Our mains were just as wonderful – Mediterranean vegetable puff pastry parcel with baba ganoush and feta cheese, and dry-aged rib-eye steak with blue cheese and salted Port butter. Our meal was perfectly accompanied by Greek white wine. We couldn’t resist the temptation to order dessert, indulging in salted caramel chocolate torte with caramel sauce, and mango

and honey cheesecake accompanied by lychee and passion fruit salsa. Every dish was beautifully presented and the passionate team who looked after us, headed by Helen and Max, ensured that our evening was memorable for all the right reasons.

WaWhen a restaurant has been in existence for 37 years, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut. Yet Wilde’s continually reinvents itself and regularly changes the menus and wine list without losing the essential character belonging to such a Leamington institution, recently voted one of the UK’s top 50 bars by The Independent.

In its latest manifestation under the management of Ollie Paginton and chef Richard Bramble, the à la carte menu adheres to the classic six-six-six formula; that is, a choice of six dishes for each course. It is the ideal ratio for neighbourhood restaurants, as opposed to the numerous gastropubs and bars-that-do-food, and it is complemented and supplemented by a choice of steaks and the regularly changing prix-fi xe menu.

On the wine list are more than 50 wines from all the major growing areas of both the Old and New World, including a special section devoted to red Bordeaux, proving that good claret is not beyond the reach of those who aren’t billionaires.

Also popular at lunchtime for its excellent-value prix-fi xe menu, it’s in the evening that Wilde’s comes into its own. The ambience is enhanced by candlelight, with eclectic art on the walls and a real buzz from professional young staff. It is a destination restaurant, of course; but also, as Waitrose Food Illustrated magazine said, a ‘local hero’.

WaThe stately, Victorian Gothic grandeur and elegance of the beautiful Binswood Hall provides a breathtaking setting for Whittle’s Restaurant. Inside, relaxed ambience meets sophisticated decor. Guests are seated on plush, luxuriously upholstered club chairs beneath an arched, beamed ceiling from which several ornate metal-wrought chandeliers hang.

Menus at Whittle’s are composed by head chef Luciano Catalinotto, whose dishes showcase a contemporary balance of fi ne European and relaxed, modern British gastronomy. Catalinotto works with trusted local suppliers to source produce for his world-class, regularly revised menu. Think goat’s cheese and pear salad with sweet lemon oil, or confi t chicken leg and baby shallot terrine with piccalilli and toasted brioche. This could be followed by pan-roasted cod with roasted artichokes, kale and dill dressing, or Aubrey Allen’s prime lamb cutlets with roasted heritage carrots and Dijon mash. Visits are perfectly concluded by sweet treats such as orchard pear and almond tart, and strawberry cheesecake with crème fraîche and berry drizzle.

Afternoon tea at Whittle’s is an institution. Enjoy a traditional offering of a pot of tea, a selection of dainty fi nger sandwiches and homemade scones with strawberry preserve and clotted cream, completed by an exquisite assortment of cakes and pastries. Alternatively, liven up the afternoon’s proceedings with a glass of Prosecco, a cocktail from the list of signature concoctions, or a quintessentially English gin and tonic served in a teacup.

On Sunday the Whittle’s kitchen serves a glorious three-course traditional roast. Options alternate to suit the season, but a typical offering might include starters of haddock fi shcake with tartare sauce and green salad leaves, followed by roast topside of beef with Yorkshire pudding and rosemary jus or loin of pork with apple sauce; all fi nished with chocolate praline and honeycomb cheesecake.

Private hire of the restaurant is available by arrangement. The elegant dining room comfortably seats 35 for relaxed, informal dining, while a cover up to 60 guests can be catered for with standing or seated buffet fare.

RuStanding proud in the Warwickshire village of Brinklow is The Bull’s Head. The pub has a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and has been sympathetically refurbished to highlight the building’s character – think exposed beams and original window frames. The food offering includes traditional options that have stood the test of time, in addition to an ever-changing selection of specials. My visit began with crispy pork belly served atop rocket and pine nut salad and drizzled with balsamic glaze, before the main event of T-bone steak with thick-cut chips and my choice of sauce arrived. Both portions were generous, but the food was so delicious that I devoured every bite. Friendly service completed the meal, and I’ll defi nitely be back to experience it again – and perhaps sample the popular Sunday roast. There’s a large play area for children outside, making The Bull’s Head a great venue for the whole family.

SWHoused within a beautiful Grade II listed building, No 9 serves exceptional, seasonal cuisine with a contemporary twist. Thoughtfully chosen suppliers deliver produce of only the highest quality, which is then turned into an outstanding set of dishes. The scallops with caulifl ower, black pudding and apple are an inspired beginning, equally matched by a main of roast pheasant accompanied by fondant potato, ceps and prunes wrapped in bacon. A delicate dessert of lemon and white chocolate roulade with raspberries and caramelised white chocolate provides a fi tting end to such an accomplished meal. The pre-theatre offering (served from 5pm until 6.30pm) and lunch menu boast similarly excellent dishes, priced at £15 for two courses, or £19.50 for three. Five- and nine-course tasting menus and private-dining facilities are further alluring factors in the already sensational experience that is a visit to No 9.

CoSituated inside the elegant, four-star Ramada Hotel & Suites Coventry – located in Coventry city centre – is the contemporary Queens Road Restaurant, Bar & Grill. The restaurant can seat up to 80 diners, making it the perfect place for large groups, as well as those looking for an intimate meal for two.

‘...contemporary take on a traditional British menu...’Queens Road provides a contemporary take on a traditional British menu. The talented head chef and his dedicated team work together to develop the innovative seasonal menu. The offering also includes daily specials such as steak nights, meaning even regulars will always have something new to try. The team uses only the best quality, sustainably sourced ingredients, which have been hand-picked and trialled before making their way onto the menu.

‘...quality, sustainably sourced ingredients...’While we read the extensive menu, we selected a couple of nibbles, my favourite being the whitebait sprinkled with Cajun spice and accompanied by garlic dip. From the mouth-watering selection of starters I chose perfectly seasoned dry-aged beef matched with pickled beetroot and a swirl of smooth caulifl ower purée, fl avoured with white truffl e oil. Finished with droplets of dill and tarragon oil and artfully placed pansy leaves, it was an exquisite starter indeed. To follow, I sampled the Norfolk pork medallions, on the waiter’s recommendation. It comprised succulent pork, sourced from Jimmy Butler’s farm, fl avoursome black pudding, curly kale and streaky bacon, drizzled with apple and cider cream sauce. Each component complemented the others perfectly, and I was very glad that I had taken the waiter’s advice. Wanting to end the meal on a sweet note, I couldn’t resist dessert. After much deliberation I plumped for the warm ginger tart – a buttery pastry case fi lled with warm ginger custard and served alongside plum compote and luxuriously creamy ice cream. The food here really is fi t for a king.

Accompanying the food is an extensive wine and Champagne list, a selection of craft beer, and classic cocktails too. All diners receive complimentary on-site car parking.

WaChef-proprietor Laura has put her own unique stamp on the delightful Queans Restaurant, preparing ingenious dishes and using only the fi nest locally sourced ingredients. Offering truly personal service, she will take your order and cook your meal herself. With only one sitting, we could relax and take our time sampling the inventive, vegetarian-friendly menu knowing that the table would be ours for the entire evening. Beginning with starters of pea, spinach and Parmesan pâté, and lentil and sunblushed tomato fritters, our tired tastebuds were awoken. It was breast of partridge with perry sauce and pear compote for me next, and sea bass with garlic and onion dressing in coriander and chilli oil for my companion. WMThe Littleton is a gastronomic gem situated within the new Business and Sports Hub of Walsall College. It offers visitors top-end fare at a fraction of the price.

Diners can choose from a variety of set menus, from which we chose to sample the fi ve-course dinner option. Parmesan cheese straws, basil popcorn and tomato hummus proved the perfect appetisers to whet our appetites. This was followed by delightful ham hock terrine, pineapple salsa and goat’s cheese bonbons, which were incredibly moreish. We were presented with a number of delicious options to enjoy for our main course, and after much deliberation I plumped for the seared fi llet of sea bass. It arrived beautifully presented, served alongside mussel chowder, buttered spinach and a fi sh croquette. Meanwhile, my partner chose the 48-hour slow-cooked beef rib, paired with smoked bacon Dauphinoise. Both courses were wonderful, and we devoured every bite. A pre-

dessert hinted at the sweet delights that were to follow – zingy lemon tart with lavender honeycomb for me, and fl avoursome rhubarb and ginger baked Alaska for my partner.

Our meal was creative and delicious at every stage and service was seamless from start to fi nish. We highly recommend The Littleton to those in search of a fi ve-star meal.

The soothing decor of Waters Restaurant offers welcome solace from the bustle of the shopping centre below. The Menu Rapide is perfect before a concert or cinema trip, but Waters is a great deal more than a speedy pit-stop; chef-proprietor Andy Waters has a background in fi ne dining and over the past 30 years has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Paul Bocuse and Jean-Christophe Novelli.

He creates British comfort food inspired by Continental cuisine in a friendly, unfussy atmosphere where children are very welcome. You might start with the simplicity of duck liver parfait with Port jelly and toasted brioche, or opt for the more complex seared scallops and king prawns presented whole and in tortellini, bound in lobster nage and served with fennel cress. Main courses are also pleasingly diverse thanks to the likes of braised blade of beef with nettle and parsley risotto, and Moroccan spiced lamb with goat’s cheese bonbon and turmeric cream. A list of classic and signature

cocktails is available, including a dessert accompaniment or alternative made with Bailey’s, Cointreau, crème de cacao and cream.

There is also a dedicated vegetarian menu and a highly popular traditional Sunday lunch. The focus throughout is on the fl avour of the top-quality ingredients, but the presentation is also exquisite, making Waters Restaurant a superb dining destination.

SEThe George Townhouse is housed within a beautiful Grade II listed building, occupying a prime spot on the High Street in Shipston-on-Stour. Upon entering the hotel, I was immediately drawn to the snug, where I settled in front of the open log-burning fi re and relaxed with a pre-dinner drink.

‘...buzzing atmosphere...’Afterwards, I was guided through to the restaurant, which boasts a homely feel thanks to the wooden fl oors and exposed brick walls – upon which hangs an eclectic collection of art. Once seated, I began the diffi cult task of choosing from the array of dishes. The kitchen team has created a seasonal menu that incorporates the fi nest ingredients. I began with the ham hock terrine, paired with homemade sweet fi g chutney and toasted slices of brioche. Each component worked together well, resulting in a wonderful dish. For the main course I tucked into succulent duck breast, which was cooked to perfection and served atop a bed of green leafy kale and drizzled in rich blackberry jus. It was also accompanied by baked potato Dauphinoise in a deliciously creamy sauce, which I thoroughly enjoyed. From the extensive drinks menu, which showcased crafted beers, interesting wines and Cotswold-distilled gin, I picked a delicious red wine to complement my meal. Wanting to fi nish the meal on a sweet note, I perused the mouth-watering dessert menu. The chocolate brownie proved an excellent choice, the outer layer encasing a luxurious melted centre. It was a true chocolate-lovers delight and well matched with a scoop of cool, creamy salted caramel ice cream. I completed my meal with a dram of Tia Maria, while taking in the restaurant’s buzzing atmosphere. Neighbouring tables were fi lled with a mix of families and couples on a romantic evening out – this truly is a venue for everyone.

‘...this truly is a venue for everyone...’Next time I visit Shipston-on-Stour, I’ll be booking a stay in one of the 15 luxury rooms, and refuelling after a day of exploring with one of their famous Sunday roasts.

SWStep through the door of The Butchers Social and enter into a rustic bar area, with exposed wooden beams and a cosy window seat that invites you to linger. If you’re feeling peckish, head down the long corridor and you’ll arrive at the rear restaurant, which is charming and light, and offers a bill of fare that is sure to delight.

We nibbled freshly baked sourdough paired with clove and mushroom whipped butter while perusing the menu. The offering highlights chef and owner Mike’s (chef profi le page 55) appreciation of seasonal ingredients. From the tempting options I chose to begin with a poached duck egg, wild mushrooms and Parmesan, while my partner had Isle of Skye scallops with caulifl ower, pickled cockles and kale. Our choices proved delicious, and we were eager to sample more of the menu. For the main course, I plumped for a pizza, which was topped with wild mushroom, hazelnut pesto and blue cheese. Meanwhile, my partner devoured roast cod

matched with artichoke, chestnuts and beer and onion ketchup. Both were incredibly moreish, and were beautifully presented.

Although we could hear the faint sounds of live music from the bar area at the front of the building, the restaurant retained an intimate atmosphere that complemented the meal well.

Situated on the green overlooking the picturesque pond in the village of Long Itchington, The Duck on the Pond underwent an extensive and stylish refurbishment in 2016 and is now in the very capable hands of co-owners Sean (chef profi le page 55) and Melissa.

Sean is also the talented head chef, who creates masterful renditions of his favourite dishes – from melt-in-the-mouth Somerset Camembert, skilfully baked inside a soda bread loaf with decadent truffl e honey, to scrumptious homemade pies and seasonally appropriate desserts. It’s clear from his menu that he has a passion for showcasing the best of British delicacies with a touch of Continental panache.

We visited in winter, when the crackling fi re in the bar and twinkling candlelit tables in the main restaurant made for an inviting ambience throughout. I opted for the soup of the day to start, which on this occasion was mushroom and Stilton. It featured generous pieces of tangy Stilton that slowly melted as I worked my way to the bottom of the bowl, resulting in deliciously gooey spoonfuls. Meanwhile my partner devoured a plate of perfectly cooked scallops, relishing the accompanying bacon and shallot dressing.

Both meat-lovers, we opted for rib-eye steak and venison to follow, the latter served with braised red cabbage, Parmentier potatoes and game jus. The cuts of meat were succulent, tender and cooked to perfection. I learned that Sean and his team are also particularly proud of their beef roasts, served on Sundays.

We couldn’t resist a look at the dessert menu. One glance and we’d already made our minds up – pear tarte Tatin for him and vanilla posset for me. Freshly baked to order, the tarte Tatin was delightfully warm and crispy, melting the moreish caramel ice cream on top. The vanilla posset was light and refreshing, topped with seasonal cranberry compote.

Perfect for families or groups of friends, The Duck on the Pond is everything a good gastropub should be. It’s also worth joining The Pond Club, a rewarding loyalty card scheme that awards members money-off points every time they visit.

SWThis pretty village may seem unassuming, but it has a tale to tell that literature fans in particular will be interested in – Shakespeare’s parents were reportedly married in its church and are rumoured to have had their wedding breakfast at The King’s Head, which is just next door. This listed pub has lost none of its charm in the intervening years, and is still serving the people of Aston Cantlow well, with a menu of seasonal dishes, a bar well-stocked with quality wine, ale and whiskey, and homely surroundings featuring original oak beams and open fi res.

There are many walking routes that start and end at The King’s Head, making this a welcome retreat after a ramble in the countryside – dogs are welcome in the bar area too. If the weather is fi ne, guests can take advantage of the lovely beer garden, with a huge chestnut tree as its centrepiece, where there is often live music during the summer months.

‘...historically well-known for serving top-notch duck suppers...’

Everything is made using local, seasonal produce where possible, with some ingredients sourced from the pub’s own garden. The à la carte menu is extensive, promising something to suit all palates and appetites. Perhaps begin with the lamb croquette with rosemary and tomato jam, or the vegetarian-friendly roasted pumpkin – from the kitchen garden – served with sage salad, toasted seeds and smoked paprika popcorn. For the main-course offering, opt for the venison and Port stew with sage dumplings if you’re in need of a hearty meal, or the Thai red curry with seared fi llet of sea bass and scallops if you’re a fan of seafood. The King’s Head is historically well-known for serving top-notch duck suppers, a tradition that has been upheld with the duck mixed grill – a dish that is not to be missed. There are also pub classics like fi sh and hand-cut chips, which is served with homemade tartare sauce and minted pea purée. Desserts such as Nanny Winnie’s bread pudding, and King’s Head carrot cake with stem ginger ice cream will please even the most seasoned sweet-tooth.

BiMr White’s English Chophouse is the perfect place to enjoy a glamorous evening meal. It is situated at the heart of the stylish Hotel La Tour, and is a haven of elegant decor, amazing cuisine and faultless service. Every detail has been considered to ensure all who visit receive a wonderful dining experience.

‘...the perfect place to enjoy a glamorous evening meal...’

After seating us, our waiter introduced himself and presented us with the menu. We were guided through the dishes, his knowledge of provenance and the accompanying wine list thoroughly impressing us. To start I chose Welsh rarebit made with toasted sourdough and served with poached eggs, while my partner opted for the beetroot salad, which included goat’s cheese beautifully offset by sweet candied walnuts. The course proved a beautiful example of how simple ingredients can be combined to create remarkable cuisine. From the main menu I enjoyed a generous portion of macaroni and wild mushrooms, topped with a perfectly poached egg. It was a great interpretation of one of my favourite dishes, and I devoured every bite. My partner plumped for the restaurant’s speciality, steak. He chose the tender 10oz rib-eye cut, which was aged for 28 days by Royal Warrant-holders Aubrey Allen. Served rare, to his preference, it was lovely and tender, enhanced by grilled vine tomatoes and moreish triple-cooked chips. Both dishes boasted a perfect balance of fl avours and textures, but weren’t so fi lling as to keep us from sampling from the dessert offering. I had chocolate brownie partnered with vanilla ice cream, which proved a truly indulgent fi nale. Rice pudding fi lled with juicy apricots was my partner’s choice, and from his silence throughout the course I can only presume it was delicious.

All in all, Mr White’s English Chophouse is a place where food is simple yet of the highest quality. Our meal was completed by the warm welcome we received from the experienced team and the buzzing atmosphere created by the surrounding diners enjoying their meals. Needless to say we will return soon.

BiMalmaison’s refurbished brasserie, Chez Mal, is a real treat. Inside, the atmosphere is ultra-romantic, with dark wood, leather seats, candles and mirrors galore. Effi cient and friendly service from a team of accommodating staff made us feel truly relaxed. To start, I plumped for the pan-roasted sea scallops, served in their shell with Jerusalem artichoke purée, Paris brown mushrooms and toasted chestnut crumb, while my companion tucked into the tempura of calamari and prawns. These were followed by succulent grain-fed Black Angus rib-eye with truffl e and Parmesan pommes frites, and a fl avourful slow-roast venison steak. Both were delicious and generously portioned. Servings of sumptuous vanilla panna cotta with poached winter fruits and sticky toffee pudding fi nished our meal with a touch of decadence. For a truly indulgent dining experience, let Malmaison sweep you off your feet.

SWThe Waterside Brasserie offers diners award-winning food in a relaxed and comfortable setting. The talented chefs frequently update the menus to refl ect the season’s harvest – though diners can always expect imaginative and fl avoursome fare that delights the palate.

When we visited, the restaurant was bustling, fi lled with theatre-lovers, couples and large groups. From the à la carte menu I began with the Cotswold venison Carpaccio, which was beautifully presented with sweet pickled girolle, carrot ribbons, blackberries and hazelnuts. My appetite whet, I moved onto the main course. From the tempting selection I chose the Herefordshire beef served two ways – melt-in-the-mouth sirloin steak and fl avoursome braised blade of beef in a rich jus. The meat was accompanied by buttery mashed potato, wilted spinach, glazed carrots and a fl oret of broccoli. From the extensive range of wine,

Champagne and craft beer I chose a lovely red. The meal concluded with steamed orange pudding with slices of tart orange, drizzled in a complementary Grand Marnier and clotted cream sauce.

The restaurant’s two-AA-rosette-awarded fare can be enjoyed in the main dining room or on the all-weather terrace, which boasts lovely views of the River Avon. The Arden Hotel also offers afternoon tea in The Lounge, and a range of tipples in the Champagne Bar.

BiCraft beer-afi cionados in search of a relaxed and easy-going haven need look no further than Purecraft Bar & Kitchen. The Purecraft family’s fl agship site, this well-appointed space was hailed as Best Beer Pub in 2015 by the Great British Pub Awards.

‘...a relaxed and easy-going haven...’Purecraft menus comprise a modernised iteration of British bar fare. Many of the dishes are prepared using namesake brewery Purity’s brews, such as the Purecrafted Scotch egg, which is served with homemade Purity beer ketchup. Shareable nibbles and small plates populate half of the menu, giving diners the opportunity to enjoy Wyre Forest charcuterie and crispy goat’s cheese with cranberry and kriek jam, to name just a few. The other half helpfully lists main dishes alongside the Purecraft team’s beer pairings, such as the kimchi-topped beefburger with Wreckin White cheese and gem lettuce, which is

served on a milk bun with fries and pairs well with a pint of Lagunitas IPA or Lanbier Dunkel.

For those with a sweet-tooth, desserts such as warm treacle tart with Porter ice cream, and stout and ginger cake with coconut meringue and pineapple sorbet will no doubt leave a lasting favourable impression as you settle the bill and pull on your coat.

SWThe old adage that time fl ies when you’re having fun is certainly apt when describing a visit to this charming inn – our evening here fl ew by, so much were we enjoying the lively ambience and fi ne food and drink. Within this beautifully restored 400-year-old building, culinary creativity and innovation have found their home. The passionate kitchen team, including award-winning chef Fritz Ronneburg (chef profi le page 56), aims to showcase local produce at its best. The drinks offering is equally impressive, leading to the venue’s inclusion in CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide for 2016 and 2017.We began with gloriously light twice-baked Blue Monday cheese souffl é with wild mushroom salad, Parmesan and roasted chestnuts, and seared sea scallops with crispy pork belly, Jerusalem artichoke purée, red wine salsify and lemon jus. For mains, we chose winter vegetable lasagne with peppery rocket salad and pecorino pangrattato, and homemade nachos with melt-in-the-mouth pulled pork, tangy barbecue sauce, guacamole, tomato compote, crème fraîche, lime and fresh chillies.

The homemade ice cream to fi nish was one of the highlights – I sampled the chocolate, lemon meringue and thyme, the latter in particular being truly original and incredibly moreish. When the rush of service had quietened down, the chef came out of the kitchen to chat with guests. We learned that he and his team make over 600 different dishes over the course of a year. Nurturing a sense of community through the use of local produce and the hosting of special events is an important part of what they do.

BiA lively, authentic Mediterranean dining experience is on offer at Red Peppers in Birmingham. The luxury of being canalside adds to the sense of occasion, and inside there is a celebratory, sociable ambience that lends itself to everything from a night out with friends to a meal for two. Get your evening off to a sophisticated start by sampling something from the superb cocktail list that includes favourites like the classic Sangria, Mojito and Strawberry Daiquiri, as well as fruity treats like Black Forest Martini.

We began with richly fl avoursome wild mushroom and rocket soup served with garlic sourdough, and panko-breaded prawns with pickled cucumber salsa and sweet chilli dip. It was tricky to choose from such a wide selection of tempting main courses, but in the end we

were glad to opt for goat’s cheese pappardelle, and lightly grilled sea bass served with warm fennel and new potato salad, Kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes and preserved lemon. If you think you’re not a dessert person, the delectable sweet treats we sampled – classic tiramisu, and pear and chocolate waffl e served with ice cream, walnuts and chocolate sauce – are sure to change your mind. BiWhether you’re looking to enjoy a leisurely lunch or a relaxed evening meal, the ambient Bar Estilo is well worth a visit. Located centrally beside one of Birmingham’s main canals, this is the perfect place to enjoy a few laid-back drinks – the speciality cocktails and jugs of Sangria are particularly tempting. From the moment we stepped inside, we found the Mediterranean vibe and welcoming atmosphere warm and inviting. The menu itself was a fi esta of large plates and tempting tapas dishes, and it was the latter selection that attracted most of our attention. We couldn’t resist the allure of perfectly seasoned prawns pil-pil with garlic and chilli, delicious halloumi fritters with a quince dip, patatas bravas with spicy tomato sauce and alioli, lamb kofta with cool tzatziki, and mini lamb and beefburgers in little brioche buns with all the trimmings. These perfectly portioned small plates are deliciously moreish and just the thing for sharing with a group of friends. Whatever you choose, be sure

to sample the delicious Spanish rice on the side. I’d also advise leaving room for dessert. We fi nished in style with thin crêpes in a warm cinnamon and orange liqueur sauce with vanilla ice cream, and traditional Spanish churros dusted with sugar and served with a pot of decadent chocolate dipping sauce – how indulgent. Not only did we enjoy top-quality cooking, the courteous, attentive staff made us feel well looked after. WaIt’s impossible to walk past Basement Browns without the delicious smell of freshly baked pizza enticing you inside. While travelling through Italy and the USA, the owners noticed that local pizzerias weren’t simply restaurants but social hubs, the place you’d head to after work to unwind or just pop into during the day for a quick snack. Seeing this inspired the brothers to bring a slice back to their hometown of Leamington Spa, and so Basement Browns was launched.

The team here is truly passionate about pizza, priding itself on producing authentic food that is both delicious and healthy. Ingredients are sourced primarily from Italy, and everything is cooked in the traditional stone oven. Try the scrumptious pepperoni pizza made with wonderfully spicy Neapolitan pepperoni, or the delectable pulled roast chicken breast pizza. The dough has been artfully mastered over years of practice and experimentation, and the hard work has certainly paid off. Lovingly made on-site every day, and slowly fermented over 72 hours – which, according to Basement Browns, makes it easier to digest – the results are superb. Even the chips are stone-baked, cooked at a blistering 350 degrees, resulting in crisp on outside, fl uffy in the middle perfection.

‘...the team here is truly passionate about pizza...’Time spent in Italy didn’t just inspire these guys to make mouth-watering pizza, they also honed their coffee knowledge too, making Basement Browns the ideal place for your morning pick-me-up. Combine your cappuccino with their Sicilian cannoli or a mozzarella and sundried tomato croissant and you’re in for a treat. For real pizza-afi cionados, they even offer the BB breakfast, which comprises their signature hand-stretched dough topped with a free-range egg, sausage, bacon, mozzarella and a choice of free extras.

It’s hard to believe that Basement Browns has only been around since summer 2015, as it’s already cemented itself as the area’s go-to pizzeria for its authentic, delicious food and laid-back, communal setting. With glowing reports from customers and a PAPA Industry Gold Award under its belt, it looks like Basement Browns is set to become a Leamington institution. Buon appetito.

CoIf you’re looking for authentic Spanish fare and a warm welcome, look no further than Dali Tapas & Vino. This charming restaurant is housed within a spacious warehouse, with an industrial style that’s complemented by the warmth of the candles dotted throughout.

Upon arrival, we were promptly shown to our table by a friendly member of the team. We chose from the extensive wine list and eagerly waited for our six-course feast to begin, which the waiter informed us comprised dishes made using traditional Spanish recipes. We whet our appetites with Parma ham, olives and cheese, before a cockle-warming soup fi lled with lentils and chorizo was served. The tomato-fl avoured broth had a great kick, and went down a treat. My partner’s favourite course arrived next – Spanish gambas. The prawns were sizeable and the paprika and garlic were evident without being overpowering. We then devoured a pair of albondigas each before the fi nal savoury course of chicken

thigh and asparagus was delivered to our table. The meatballs and chicken were both succulent, and we devoured every bite of each course. I defi nitely have a sweet-tooth so was excited for our dessert to arrive. Luckily the creamy chocolate orange pudding didn’t disappoint.

After our meal, we sampled from the wine list further, and enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere and Spanish background music.

SoFor eight decades, the Beckett family has been farming in the Wythall area, bringing fresh produce to appreciative customers. The concept of the restaurant was created in 1984 and reborn in 2008, and now offers excellent English country cooking for breakfast, brunch and lunch, and for private events in the evening. The happy family atmosphere created by managers and staff ensures that all ages and group sizes receive a warm welcome. The slogans on the back of the staff’s polo shirts refl ect the menu items and the ambience: Rise and Shine, Old Faithful and Midlands’ Best Breakfast. Our charming waitress provided further information about the menu, from which we eventually chose steaming caulifl ower soup, and crispy breaded king prawns with hot chilli sauce as starters, followed by scampi and chips with homemade tartare sauce, and the daily special of lean, tender turkey breast with fresh vegetables. Service was prompt as well as friendly, and the turnaround between customers was most effi cient.

Becketts Farm also serves a weekday afternoon tea, which must be pre-booked, and an unlimited Sunday carvery. There is a coffee shop with some delicious-looking cakes and biscuits, and a large farm shop selling freshly baked bread and cakes, local meat, vegetables and fruit, a huge selection of international cheeses, hot and cold food to take away, and a variety of gifts. WaThe Rocking Horse Coffee Shop has been lovingly run by owner Donna for the last 25 years. Under her guidance, the restaurant offers reasonably priced fare, which is served in homely surrounds. Fresh, locally sourced and free-range ingredients are the secret behind the lovely meals served at The Rocking Horse. From the range that includes toasted sandwiches, homemade chicken curry and chilli con carne, we chose the butternut squash, Stilton and spinach risotto, and the salmon pasta, and were highly impressed. To fi nish, we sampled from the range of home-baked desserts – I had the cranberry and berry chocolate fl an while my partner devoured his slice of coffee and walnut cake. As a vegetarian, I felt spoilt for choice, and can’t wait for my next visit.

SEGreat beer – including two regularly changing guest brews – is at the heart of what The Harvester offers. So much so that CAMRA has featured the pub in its Good Beer Guide for over a quarter of a century. The Harvester serves quality food and drink seven days a week and, as a free house, can source beer from any of over 1400 brewers in the country. For this reason, most of their fantastic bill of fare – for both food and drink – comes from small, family-owned companies, much like The Harvester itself. In the summer months a large courtyard garden means guests can sit outside and catch the sun, while enjoying pizza that has been made to order from the wood-fi red pizza oven. Dog-walkers are warmly welcomed, and cycling pub-goers will appreciate the bike locks. A packed calendar of events, which includes the monthly Willow & Tool’s Music Parlour, means that The Harvester isn’t just a spot for great food and drink, but is also a cornerstone of the Long Itchington community.

The Anchor Inn and its seasonally changing menu are drawing in foodies in droves to sample the region’s best in quality traditional pub fare and locally brewed ales. We began our meal with starters of bacon and black pudding with blue cheese dressing; and pork, chicken and apricot terrine served with plum and ginger chutney and French bread. For mains, my partner enjoyed locally sourced rib-eye steak, tender and cooked to perfection, served with tomato, mushroom, chips and peppercorn sauce; and for myself – a diner with a penchant for a good, old-fashioned pie and mash dish – The Anchor’s steak and Hooky pie, served on a bed of creamy mash, with buttered veg, was nothing short of delightful. It was a true pub classic, served with fl air. Finally, no visit to The Anchor Inn should end without sampling one of their deliciously tempting desserts. The coffee and chocolate mousse with salted caramel and amaretto crumb was pure heaven. Alternatively, the British cheeseboard, served with chutney

and biscuits, is a favourite among diners whose appetite for savoury food can’t be satisfi ed by two courses alone. The Anchor Inn’s loyal following of regulars loves the pub’s selection of local ales supplied by brewers Purity and Hook Norton, and its burger, steak and fi sh nights are always popular. CoSince opening in the summer of 2015, Street has been making its mark on the rapidly developing Earlsdon food scene, serving up a menu of Asian-inspired street food.

The menu features many classic South East Asian teppanyaki, ramen, and curry dishes, such as the braised beef massaman – marinated slow-braised brisket of beef in a mildly spiced, tangy Thai curry fl avoured with peanuts, tamarind and coconut cream. However the menu also includes other favourites that are given an inventive Street twist, such as build-your-own burgers and an express lunch menu with a ten-minute guarantee.

If being decisive isn’t a quality you possess, Street’s range of sharing starters offers a fantastic way of sampling several delicious dishes in one sitting. Sumptuous servings of spicy pork nuggets, udon noodle chilli bites and Korean king ribs, to name just a few, are sure to please. The menu also offers a wealth of gluten-free dishes – 95

per cent of the menu can be prepared gluten-free – as well as plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, so you can be certain that there’s something for everyone. Finally, to complement the fantastic bill of fare, the team has put together a decidedly world-class menu of homemade juices and shakes, imported beers and Asian-inspired cocktails. The community ethos at Street – well-matched with its Asian street-food vibe – is such that the team has dedicated 50 per cent of the restaurant’s capacity to walk-in custom, preferring guests to turn up, take a seat and appreciate this little hub’s fantastic food.

CoIn 2015 restaurateur Toby Wang and multi-award-winning chef Shinji Moroto (chef profi le page 56) brought Shin restaurant to Coventry. Their ambition was to provide diners with authentic, fresh and tasty food from Shinji’s home country of Japan, and they are certainly succeeding.

The menu combines a varied selection of traditional small and large dishes – including a good range of vegetarian options – that can be ordered and enjoyed in any combination. The diversity of dishes on offer – from familiar favourites such as teriyaki-glazed chicken skewers and hearty ramen broths to an extensive sushi and sashimi menu – makes for diffi cult decisions, but the friendly staff will happily guide you through your choices, explaining the more unusual dishes if this is your fi rst time sampling true Japanese cuisine. I followed their advice and picked the popular tonkotsu ramen – a mouth-watering dish of pork belly and noodles in rich and comforting stock, served in a large bowl big enough to

share. Each and every dish is freshly prepared, ensuring that the taste and presentation are of the highest quality. With a specials board that changes daily, there is something new and enticing for each return visit.

A vibrant atmosphere, warming welcome and delicious, authentic cuisine combine to create a memorable dining experience, while the colourful, artsy decor – along with a drinks list that includes Japanese beers, sake and whisky – will leave you wondering whether you have actually been transported to Tokyo.

BiMiyako Teppanyaki has 24 successful years of trading under its belt, and has the honour of having been the fi rst Japanese restaurant in Birmingham, as well as the fi rst of its kind in the Arcadian Centre. It fl ies the Japanese fl ag with pride, presenting a refi ned interior with beautiful, authentic artwork decking its natural stone walls. The mood is sophisticated but welcoming, with fl oor lamps providing warm illumination, soothing music playing softly in the background and friendly, charming staff.

Teppanyaki is a famed culinary art in Japan, where food is prepared on a steel surface in full view of diners. Our chef created a dish while juggling eggs – a spectacular note on which to begin a meal. Using fresh ingredients, the restaurant’s expert chefs cook up a range of stunningly crafted dishes – expect to fi nd the likes of succulent fresh seafood, crispy spring rolls, tasty noodles and

tender prime fi llets on the lunch and main menus. A bill of fare featuring fresh sushi and appetisers is also available, as are various tempting set menus.

My king prawns and monkfi sh, cooked teppanyaki-style with soy butter and white wine, was sharp, tangy and utterly delectable when washed down with a glass of sake. After enjoying such fi rst-rate cuisine here, my go-to restaurant for an authentic Japanese dining experience is defi nitely Miyako Teppanyaki.

WMPenn Tandoori, known by its loyal following as the Pride of Penn, has been serving faithful diners in Wolverhampton for 15 years – in fact, several Wolverhampton Wanderers football players consider themselves regulars here. It is still run by the same family, who are dedicated to providing visitors with delicious Indian cuisine in a welcoming setting. The family’s passion for perfection and authenticity has seen Penn Tandoori be named Most Popular Indian Restaurant of the Year at the Express & Star awards. The restaurant has moved with the times to keep the decor fresh and modern. Its current look is sleek and stylish. The contemporary approach extends to the food too, which sees authentic Indian fl avours harmonise with tastes from around the world.

‘...delicious Indian cuisine in a welcoming setting...’The menu showcases Bengali and Bangladeshi cuisine, with an offering that encompasses all of the classic curries that are beloved by British diners – tandoori, balti, biryani and bhuna. The menu also includes chef specialities, which the chef spices by hand, giving him free rein to create new dishes as he goes. Some of his most popular dishes include tiger prawns in pistachio sauce, and the stunning house lobster bhuna.

‘...sleek and stylish...’Presented with the menu, we began the diffi cult task of choosing which mouth-watering dishes to sample. The range of traditional dishes, like tomato-fi lled pathia and peppery dansak, and house specialities such as lamb sagwala and chicken zafrani drew my attention, while my partner was intrigued by the garlicky lamb shank, and vegetarian-friendly shabzi badami. We were impressed to see so many vegetarian-friendly options on the menu, and there are even quite a few European dishes for those less-adventurous diners in your group.

Our meal began with crisp poppadoms and a tray of moreish dips. With tastebuds tantalised, we moved onto the starters of salmon tandoori and chicken pakora. The salmon was lightly charred – a distinguishing feature of tandoori

dishes – and the succulent chicken pieces were coated in tasty batter. Both were fresh and appetising. The waiter made recommendations for our main-course dishes, and under his guidance we enjoyed Bangladeshi lamb, chicken jalfrezi and dahl. My favourite was the lamb dish, which had a great kick and was served with tomato and fresh coriander leaves. Meanwhile, my partner seemed taken with the milder jalfrezi, the meat so tender it fell apart. We also thoroughly enjoyed the dahl, and mopped up the remains of its sauce with chunks of fl uffy naan. From the vast choice of side dishes, we chose to complement our meals with the spicy Bombay aloo and intriguing sag bhajee, made with spinach instead of onion.

‘...the meat so tender it fell apart...’From the list of enticing desserts we chose to fi nish our meal with traditional kulfi ice cream. After much deliberation we went for the pistachio, which was perfectly smooth and delightfully refreshing.

‘...memorable for all the right reasons...’During our visit, the contented chatter and laughter from neighbouring tables created a lovely buzz in the restaurant, and over and over again we heard other diners complimenting the staff on the excellent food. The tables were fi lled with groups big and small, proving that Penn Tandoori is well-suited to anyone looking for an exemplary Indian meal. For those planning a family gathering or other special event, the team is always on-hand to ensure that evenings are memorable for all the right reasons.

‘...diners with special dietary requirements are warmly welcomed...’

Those arriving by car will be pleased to hear that the venue has plenty of free parking to the rear. Diners with special dietary requirements are warmly welcomed with special orders of a variety of Penn’s dishes undertaken even at short notice. And for those who would prefer to enjoy Penn Tandoori’s delicious cuisine from the comfort of their own home, the restaurant offers a takeaway service.

WMAs visitors arrive at Vujon, their attention can’t help but be drawn towards the vibrant wall painting that decorates the entire restaurant space. This award-winning restaurant is recognised by the local community as a fantastic independent local business, with private events and outside catering keeping the kitchen team busy throughout the year. My friends and I were delighted to listen to the recommendations made by the competent and friendly staff who directed us towards several new dishes, some unique to Vujon. All of the plates were superbly presented. My dining partner’s award-winning starter of lamb kaalia was fl avoursome and delicious; the lamb perfectly cooked and tender. I had plenty of choice as a vegetarian diner. My starter of onion bhaji was fresh, crispy and demonstrated a delicate balance of fl avours. We also sampled helpings of chilli paneer tikka – at once delicate with a bit of a kick. Our main courses of sizzling chicken with lemongrass and coriander, and tarka

SoMasala Club’s location only a fi ve-minute drive from the NEC makes it a popular choice for exhibitors and visiting businesspeople, but it is much more than just a convenient venue for a post-conference meal – the restaurant holds a TripAdvisor Certifi cate of Excellence and has a reputation as a luxurious place to socialise, welcoming television stars and sports personalities into its spacious and stylish interior.

Welcoming front-of-house staff are on-hand to show you to your table, and the kitchen team is happy to accommodate special requests. For most diners, however, the menu will more than satisfy, as it is varied and extensive, the portions are generous, and the dishes are fresh and tasty. The chefs at Masala Club believe in keeping the use of ghee, butter and oil to a minimum, making for curries that are lighter and healthier than conventional Indian dishes. Their masala mix combines more than 20 different spices for a deep and subtle fl avour, and, what’s more, they never use ready-made mixes but rather import the fresh whole spices from India and Bangladesh then dry and grind them in the kitchen and mix up the blends on demand. The other ingredients are fresh and carefully sourced too, and this attention to the produce shines through in the dishes.

‘...a luxurious place to socialise...’Particularly recommended are the tandoori king prawn masala for those who like a mild, creamy curry and the chicken Rajeswari for those who prefer a spicier dish. Also excellent is the sunar Bangla mach – fi sh from the Bay of Bengal cooked with fresh aubergine, tomatoes and fi ery green chilli. The Peshwari naan is likewise very highly rated and is the perfect accompaniment to a spicy curry. An extensive selection of wine and beer is available to accompany your meal at the restaurant, and takeaway meals can be ordered on the website. You can also book a table online, register to receive details of special offers, and even buy gift certifi cates to be used towards a meal. WMDespite only opening three years ago, The Curry Lounge has already garnered an excellent reputation. It has remained in the top 12 restaurants on TripAdvisor, and claimed the number one spot during that time. The restaurant was also shortlisted at the 2016 British Curry Awards in the Best Spice Restaurant in the Midlands category, and was a runner-up in the Express & Star’s Most Popular Indian Restaurant of the Year awards.

Faultless service is to be expected at The Curry Lounge. Front of house is run by owner Syed, who is also in charge of quality control. Syed is a qualifi ed fusion chef, and has put his own intriguing stamp on the Indian menu. The lamb and mushroom tagliatelle is made to a traditional Italian recipe, though with Indian spices replacing the expected fl avours. Another speciality is the Thai red curry, this time made using Thai methods and Indian spices. Fans of traditional Indian fare are more than catered for by the vast menu. We recommend starting with chillied fi sh, before moving onto chicken breast stuffed with curried mince and accompanied by delicious house sauce. For vegetarians, the tawa paneer is sure to delight, comprising chickpeas, fresh paneer cheese and a medley of vegetables, cooked in a spicy sauce. For groups of four or more the party platter is a great way to sample the offering – it consists of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, seekh kebabs, fi sh pakora, onion bhaji and vegetable-fi lled samosas. The restaurant is unlicensed but diners are more than welcome to bring their own drinks, and there is no corkage fee.

The Curry Lounge is a great place to visit for a special occasion. There are dedicated menus on Valentine’s Day, Christmas Day, and Mothering Sunday and Father’s Day – which are always popular, so booking is recommended. Diners should also book onto one of Syed’s taster events, details of which can be found on Facebook. Past editions include Bangladeshi nights, and special Michelin-star menus, which are made with an Indian twist. CoSonargaon is an authentic Indian restaurant that has been proudly run by the Ali family for almost 30 years. The family pride themselves on the homely dining experience and attentive and warm service they provide, while the venue itself is stylishly furnished to help craft a sophisticated atmosphere. And, as the restaurant is just a fi ve-minute drive from Coventry city centre and has ample free parking just outside the door, it’s easy to get to this little haven of Indian cuisine.

Delectable starters include prawn puri, which is spiced to request and creatively presented, and the paneer tikka, which is served with a salad and is a popular choice that’s perfect for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. Having tried both on our visit, it has to be said that the food really does taste as good as it looks.

Main courses likewise offer something for everyone. I tried the chicken shashlik. This impressive and colourful dish

includes marinated chicken breast, red onions, peppers and coriander and is served to the table theatrically on a sizzling griddle plate. For something equally impressive, the mirchi masala that my partner enjoyed was a winning combination of seared chicken delicately baked with minced lamb and served in rich and fl avoursome sauce.

So, for an evening of quality Indian cuisine, combined with fl awless service and a truly relaxing ambience, Sonargaon ticks every box.

WaNestled down Smith Street in the charming city of Warwick, Maya’s Indian Brasserie offers exceptional fare at great prices. The restaurant boasts a modern interior fi lled with beautifully dressed tables, and all who visit are offered a hospitable welcome.

‘...exceptional fare at great prices...’The service is effi cient – though there’s plenty of time to enjoy poppadoms and a selection of pickles while you choose from the vast menu. After listening to our spice preferences, the waiter recommended I begin with the mango tikka, which comprised tender strips of chicken cooked in spicy mango purée with a pinch of lemongrass. Meanwhile, my partner opted for one of the traditional starters, the tandoori kebab. Both were wonderfully fl avoursome and left us excited to sample more of Maya’s fare. For the main event, those like me with an

adventurous palate will enjoy the kalonji baingan. This was a delicious dish of aubergines and spicy chicken, fl avoured with ginger and garlic, which I then chose to partner with coconut rice and coriander and onion naan bread. SWThe Curry Republic is home to delicious, authentic Indian fare. It occupies a prime spot at the end of the mile-long High Street in Henley-in-Arden, surrounded by clothing boutiques and independent cafés selling the town’s famous ice cream.

Head inside and you’ll be greeted by a sleek and modern interior, and the hospitable team. Take a seat, perhaps order a cold beer, and prepare for an incredible meal.

The extensive range of starters includes tender lamb chops, and skewered chicken tikka fl avoured with crushed ginger and garlic. Seafood-fans will delight in the jingha nach – stir-fried tiger prawns enhanced by fresh herbs and spring onions – while vegetarians can choose from options like dall bora (mashed lentil patties), paneer tikka and vegetable samosas. The selection of main-course options is equally impressive. It includes British favourites that have stood the test of time, like jalfrezi, madras and an original balti, as well as a range of signature specialities that are made to house recipes. These include pan-fried salmon atop a bed of spinach, potato and poached egg, and the belfoy gosht – beef rump in a medium-spice curry with olives and sweet peppers, which is popular in the Bengal region. If these don’t tickle your fancy, why not opt for something from the tandoor? Options include grilled sea bass, skewers of chicken, mushrooms, sweetcorn, capsicum and onion, and the highly popular tandoori mixed grill. BiIf you’re in search of a delicious and authentic Indian meal, look no further than Shababs. Occupying a prime spot on Birmingham’s famous Balti Triangle this restaurant has a well-earned reputation for offering a fi rst-class dining experience. Past visitors to Shababs include the Hairy Bikers, David Myers and Sid King – why not pop along for yourself and see why Shababs is so popular.

‘...a fi rst-class dining experience...’The interior is decorated in shades of purple and gold, and is both spacious and cosy, while showcasing all of the charm of Indian culture. The restaurant is suited to host large parties as well as those having an intimate meal.

‘...showcasing all of the charm of Indian culture...’Diners are spoilt to choice with the menu, though friendly owner Zaf is only too happy to recommend exciting fl avour combinations to suit your taste and appetite. Perhaps begin with the house mixed grill, which can be adapted to suit a large group or an individual. For the main course, Shababs offers intriguing versions of popular classics, like the balti chicken tikka masala keema jalfreshi, and the lamb tikka masala bhuna. Seafood-fans delight in the likes of the balti king prawn and mushroom dish, while vegetarians are catered for with a vast range of options including aloo and pea paneer, balti egg and spinach, the vegetable jalfrazi and the veg-fi lled dopiaza. Traditional accompaniments like sundries and rice are freshly made on-site and provide the perfect side dish to your main. Finish your meal in style with a chocolate torte or strawberry cheesecake, or with an authentic Indian dessert like sticky gulab jaman or pistachio barfi . The restaurant is not licensed to serve alcohol, though diners are more than welcome to bring a tipple with them.

With excellent fare, lovely surrounds and service with a smile, Shababs ticks every box. Walk-ins are welcome at Shababs, though as the restaurant is rather popular it’s always worth calling ahead.

Chris Stanbrook has made a name for himself at several of Loch Fyne’s most popular restaurants, including the elegant Kenilworth and Knowle restaurants. For Chris, good food is all about working with great produce – sourcing fresh ingredients to use in creating exciting new dishes is a real passion for him. Working in a kitchen that specialises in seafood means that Chris has a real understanding and appreciation of the sea and the variety of produce it holds.

‘...sourcing fresh ingredients to use in creating exciting new dishes is a real passion...’

Spring is his favourite time of year, when he can go fi shing for mackerel and bream, though wild sea bass is another of his preferred catches. At Loch Fyne, Chris allows top-quality ingredients to speak for themselves, cooking simply so as to enhance the natural fl avour of each element of the dish. For him, there is no greater praise than a happy diner coming into the kitchen to thank him for a job well done.

Coming from a family of chefs, Sean Boyne has felt at home in the kitchen from a young age. Since his career began, he has worked under a handful of chefs, each with their own techniques. Eager to learn – and continue learning – Sean studied each chef’s style to create his own unique approach to cooking. Today Sean heads up the team at The Duck on the Pond, where he uses his love of seasonality, local game and wild food to create mouth-watering menus. Sean believes that great food is the product of great ingredients, and particularly enjoys the sauce section of the kitchen, where the metaphorical glue of a dish is made.

‘...he uses his love of seasonality, local game and wild food...’

His most memorable experience is cooking for Gordon Ramsay while working at Le Caprice, though he intends to make many more great memories – and win a few awards – with his team at The Duck on the Pond.

Mike’s fi rst foray into the kitchen came at the age of 14, when he worked as a kitchen porter. Since then, he’s made his way up the ranks, working with the likes of Michel Roux Sr. to become head honcho at The Butchers Social. Along the way Mike has received a plethora of accolades, including being named chef of the year in 2012 by MARCHE.

‘...he loves the wealth of ingredients available, and likes to source them locally...’

Spring is Mike’s favourite season, and he fi nds writing the menus during this time very easy. He loves the wealth of ingredients available, and likes to source them locally to reduce food miles. However, Mike is willing to travel a little further and pay a bit more to ensure that produce is of the highest quality. Using these seasonal elements, Mike enjoys introducing dishes to his diners that they haven’t tried before.

Born and trained in Japan, Shinji Moroto loves introducing people to authentic Japanese food that is fresh, balanced, simple and colourful. For Shinji, one of the most enjoyable parts of being a chef is the opportunity to pass on his skills, and he has shared his expertise with the best, even showing Rick Stein how to roll and cut sushi. His top tip is to make sure that your hands are wet or oiled so that the rice doesn’t stick.

‘...he has shared his expertise with the best, even showing Rick Stein how to roll and cut sushi...’

As a young man, Shinji was taught and inspired by chef Matsura, who spent his life perfecting every aspect of Japanese culinary art. Shinji’s own favourite part of the kitchen is the hot section – pan-frying, steaming, stewing and baking – with gyoza dumplings a particular speciality. His skill has earned him prestigious opportunities, such as cooking for Jenson Button and Takuma Sato at the Formula 1 in Sao Paulo.

For Fritz Ronneburg, good food is all about seasonal cooking using the best local ingredients. He cultivates relationships with suppliers like Mudwalls Farm, so his menus feature fantastic locally grown produce. Fritz loves working with spring lamb but his favourite ingredients are mushrooms, particularly the trompette noir, and customers at The Broom Tavern have come to love his exquisite showcasing of such simple ingredients.

‘...all about seasonal cooking using the best local ingredients...’

Fritz has spent his career working in some of the best kitchens in the UK and Denmark, including Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons. Throughout his successful and diverse career, he’s gained countless accolades, including two AA rosettes for several of his restaurants. The Broom Tavern was voted Seasonal Pub of the Year for autumn 2014 by Shakespeare CAMRA and it’s clear that this is just the start of Fritz Ronneburg’s recognition at this superb venue.
