Term 1—Week 4—Wednesday 20th February 2019
Our welcome BBQ was a fantastic way to start
the school year. It was a great opportunity for
to meet up and welcome everyone to the
2019 school year!
Our 2019 student leadership process has now been finalised. Congratulations to our House Leaders who were presented at our whole school assembly last Friday. Mr Hackett, presented the house leaders to the school community and spoke with our student audience about the qualities necessary to be a good school leader. I congratulate all students who worked hard on their applications and submitted well thought out responses. I am looking forward to working with all our leadership members and seeing them flourish as leaders. Next Friday our student leaders will attend the leaders congress held at Deakin Warrnambool. Throughout the day the students will hear from guest speakers, Sarah Wall and Matt Harkin about ‘What it means to be a Leader in My Community’. I look forward to hearing about the day and the student’s ideas about the 2019 WWPS community project.

Professional Learning
As part of the Victorian Government’s ‘Education State’ initiative all schools and staff are now required to participate in a lot more Department of Education endorsed Professional Development (training). Over the course of this year all of our staff are required to attend a variety of Professional Development based on improving student learning outcomes, especially in Literacy and Numeracy.
This training is essential for our staff in order to remain current with educational trends and learn about new and
emerging initiatives. Next week Mr Griffin, Miss Evans and Mrs Roberts will be attending ‘Sounds Write’ training from Tuesday 26th-Friday, March 1st. This framework of the systematic and direct teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness is taught daily in our infant rooms and once training is completed the framework will extend to our 3-6 classrooms.
When staff are required to attend Professional Development activities during a school day, please be reassured that we make every effort to ensure that there are minimal disruptions to school and classroom routines.
Home Reading
A reminder that every student at Warrnambool West Primary should be reading every night and talking about or reading with their parents. I cannot stress how important it is for you to show interest in your child’s reading; reading can include the newspaper and footy records....anything of interest to them. Reading aloud is also important for confidence, fluency and pronunciation.
To borrow a quote from well-known author Dr Seuss.
“The more you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more
places you’ll go.”
Please remember that reading at home should be with text they can read without a struggle. If it is too hard, they lose interest and meaning. At school the teachers work with them on more challenging books and articles.
Punctuality
A punctual start to the school day allows the teacher and students to make the most of the learning day. Whilst 10 – 15 minutes may not seem much, a student who is late each day will miss between 34 and 51 hours of instruction time in one year. Parents are strongly urged to make all efforts to ensure their child/children are at school ready for the start of class at 9am Remember-
‘AT SCHOOL, EVERY DAY, ON TIME, READY FOR LEARNING’.
Lost Property
We are only in week four of term one and already we have many students who have lost jumpers, hats etc. Please ensure all items of clothing and other belongings are clearly labelled to enable lost items to be returned

Athletic Sports
Our house sports will be held on Friday 8th of March on our school oval, commencing approximately 9.15am. It would be wonderful if all students could come to school wearing coloured shirts representing their house colour. Please ensure your children bring a drink bottle, snacks and lunch to last them throughout the day. Parents and Friends will conduct their special café lunch with hot dogs, hedgehog and juice boxes for sale. If your child is unsure of their house team, please contact Mr Hackett or Vanessa in the office.
Uniform
Coloured runners, skate shoes and black cloth shoes are NOT part of our uniform. As a school it is important to take pride in the uniform we wear and as such it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure we have correct uniform. Your support in ensuring your child has the correct footwear is greatly appreciated. Please contact me if you have any concerns regarding our school uniform policy.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent teacher interviews will be held on Thursday March 7th from 12:30-6pm. The aim of these meetings is to provide an opportunity to share valuable information for both parents and teachers, often informing elements of students individualised education programs to support the child’s learning progress; academically as well as social and emotional. Please complete the form attached and return to school as soon as possible to book your interview time.
School Council Elections 2019
On behalf of the Warrnambool West school community, I would like to thank our retiring School Council members; Noel Halliwell, Alison Laidlaw, Judie Irvine and Siobhan Lilly for their generous and valued contribution they have made to our school over the last 12months-two years. There are 5 parent vacancies beginning in March. If you are interested in nominating yourself or someone else (with permission) please collect the nomination from the office. Nominations close on Wednesday 6th of March. If there are more nominations then positions we will then hold a ballot, at which point I will inform the school
community. Nominations will close on 27th of February at 4pm. I would like to encourage anyone who is interested to apply. I would also ask those who are completing their term of office to consider standing again. Our AGM will be held at 7pm, on March 18th, in the staffroom.
CSEF Reminder
We are now accepting applications for the 2019 CSEF. CSEF is provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips, camps and sporting activities. If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. A special consideration category also exists for asylum seeker and refugee families. The allowance is paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions or sporting activities for the benefit of your child. If you applied for the CSEF at your child's school in 2018, you do not need to complete an application form in 2019 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances. You only need to complete an application form if any of the following changes have occurred; 1. new student enrolments; your child has started or changed schools in 2019 or you did not apply in 2018. 2. changed family circumstances; such as a change of custody, change of name, concession card number, or new siblings commencing at the school in 2019. Check with the school office if you are unsure.
Parents and Friends News
Our Parents and Friends met last week and have planned some exciting events for the 2019 school year. The first special café lunch proved to be very popular with the students. This Friday the menu is Chicken Burgers.
New family and friends are always welcome at the meetings and your assistance at special events would certainly be appreciated. There are no obligations, it’s just to come and find out what’s going on, have a cuppa and a chat and to meet new people.

FISSURE SEALANTS
What is a fissure sealant? Fissure sealants are a plastic coating applied to
children’s back teeth and are a safe and painless way of protecting your
children’s back teeth from tooth decay. Most tooth decay in children occurs in
their back teeth.
How are fissure sealants applied? It is quick and straight forward, taking
only a few minutes per tooth. Our Dentist will clean and prepare the tooth with a
special
solution. The tooth is dried with air. The liquid is then applied and set hard using
a special light. It is pain free.
How long do they last? They can last for many years and the dentist may
check them at each check-up. They can wear over time and your Dentist may
add or replace some sealant.
