Principal Report cont.Chaplaincy Funding Not Contined For Warragul North Primary School So Sadly It’s Farewell To Mrs Anne PrimeOn Wednesday 17th December, 2014 Warragul North Primary School received an e-mail from Department of Education and Training informing us that the school would no longer receive chaplaincy funding. This was sad news indeed for Mrs Prime and our school. The timing of the e-mail being within the last three days of the school year was also disappointing.

Mrs Prime graciously agreed to attend Warragul North Primary School last Friday and this coming Friday the 13th February to say farewell to staff and students instead of just disappearing. Mrs Prime kindly did this to ensure students had closure on the chaplaincy.

Mrs Prime has provided excellent support and guidance to students, parents and staff during her six years as chaplain at Warragul North Primary School. Mrs Prime has frequently made home visits to support families suffering bereavement, illness, injury or difficulties. She has frequently provided transport for families and given very generously of her personal time. Mrs Prime will be very sadly missed at Warragul North Primary School. On behalf of the school community I thank Mrs Prime for her excellent service and wish her every success in the future.

A warm welcome to our new staff for 2015It is my pleasure to introduce and welcome our new staff members for 2015. We look forward to working with them and wish them every success in their roles.

Special Religious Instruction (SRI) 2015On Friday 19th December 2014 our school had received 68 SRI forms out of the 450 sent out. After sorting the returned forms into year levels not one year level had 50% or more giving permission for their child to participate in Special Religious Education.

For example parent consent across the year levels ranged from the highest of 23 out of the 94 possible to the lowest of 12 out of the 63 possible.

Consequently SRI will not be offered in 2015.

Warragul North Primary School has been most fortunate to have had wonderful SRI Co-ordinators over many years. Mr Albert and Mrs Joyce Cavanagh have been a pleasure to have in the school and have co-ordinated the delivery of SRI in an efficient and very friendly manner. We also appreciate the many hours the SRI instructors have devoted to the students and our school for the preparation and presentation of SRI as volunteers.

• Let them carry their own bag and walk in to school by themselves.

Spinning and Weaving with Nanny BarbThroughout 2014 Grade 1LT had the pleasure of ‘Nanny Barb’s’ assistance each Friday (Angus Parker’s Grandmother). After testing the children on their weekly words, Nanny Barb would teach the children how to spin yarn. She brought in a range of spindles for the children to master and a variety of wool and alpaca fleece to be spun.

In fourth term Nanny Barb brought in her large weaving loom for the yarns to be woven into a magnificent wall hanging. She presented this to the class and it is now displayed outside Room 11 for all to enjoy.

1LT would like to warmly thank Nanny Barb for sharing her time and skills with us. The help of family and friends in the classroom is of tremendous benefit to the children and the sharing and teaching of craft skills are invaluable.

Maths Online is Australia’s leading computer-based training program designed to complement what your child is being taught in class. This program offers all students from Prep to Year Twelve the opportunity to develop and practise their mathematical skills through online tutorials. All lessons are based on the Australian Curriculum.

Maths Online is designed to support teachers, students and parents. It helps guide students through lessons, allowing them to pause, rewind and repeat all or part of any lesson until they fully understand. The tutorials are presented using visual and audio animation. Maths Online allows teachers to set learning tasks based on topics being taught within the grade and receive up-to-date feedback on student progress.

The Maths Online program also offers interactive features where students can practice their times tables and develop their speedy number facts. It also provides our students with a wonderful opportunity to gain extra support or extension.

Again this year, the staff of Warragul North Primary School will be using Maths Online as part of their Mathematics Program.

A reminder to all parents, that Maths Online is still available to all students who purchased this online resource during 2014.

New passwords for the current 2015 year (running from late February 2015 to February 2016) will be issued within the next few weeks after payment ($20.00) for 2015 has been received.

Why it’s important We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day.

If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school.

There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.

Getting in early Attendance patterns are established early – a child regularly missing days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and receive lower test scores than their classmates. It’s vital that students go to school every day – even in the early years of primary school.

What we can do The main reasons for absence are:

Sickness – There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.

It's vital that holidays are planned during school holidays where possible, and not during the term if it can be avoided.

“Day off” – Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates – every day counts.

Truancy – This is when students choose not to go to school without their parent’s permission. There can be many reasons for truancy. The best way to address this is for schools and parents to work together.

If for any reason your child must miss school, there are things you can do with your school to ensure they don’t fall behind:

• Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

• Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.

Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as early as possible.

Openly communicating with your child's school about all absences is a good way to prevent attendance issues being escalated to a School Attendance Officer. A School Attendance Officer is a Department of Education and Early Childhood Development Regional Director who has authority to follow up attendance issues. Attendance issues that are escalated can lead to an Infringement Notice.

If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher know so we can work together to get your child to school every day.

At Warragul North Primary School we strongly encourage punctuality and attendance. At 8.50am the ‘bag bell’ sounds and children hang their bags up and enter their classrooms ready for a 9.00am start. We also know the importance of regular attendance and follow the ‘It’s not ok to be away or late’ process. Students who attend every school day for Term One will receive a 100% attendance certificate. The same will happen if they attend every school day for Terms Two, Three and Four.

At the end of the year any student who achieves a rate of 100% for the year will be acknowledged.

Children are to be dropped off at and picked up from the OSHC house at 11 Princess St. The hours for all day care are from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and the cost for the day will be $50.00. Please telephone the school office on 56234066 to make a booking. BOOKINGS FOR ALL DAY CARE ARE ESSENTIAL.

OSHC is available on a permanent or casual basis. Enrolment forms are available from the school office or from OSHC. A waiting list is held if a session is already fully booked. It is important that the school office or OSHC is notified if your child is not going to attend a session they have been booked in for as that place can then be used for a casual booking. Once you have a permanent booking you will be billed for that placement whether your child attends or not.

Parking | Traffic Flow | Disabled ParkingTo assist parents with parking rules around the school, a map explaining legal parking areas and traffic flow will be sent home this week.

Please be aware that ‘reserved’ parking areas are for staff use only.

If everyone adheres to the agreed parking areas and direction of traffic f low it creates a safer environment for children during drop off and pick up times.

Just a friendly reminder that the disabled parking space provided outside the administration building is for people with a disabled parking permit only. It is also requested that you be mindful of other people who use this space and not double park across it. There has been reported instances of the space being regularly blocked not allowing access or allowing the vehicle parked to exit. Please do not park across this specially designated car space. Thank you.
