Dear Parents and Warner School District Patrons, As the summer months slowly crawl by, it only takes one glance at the calendar to notice school will be starting in less than 20 days. No worries; Glen, Pat and Sye have been busy over the summer to make sure everything is ready for kids to return. The school building and surrounding facilities are getting their final touches as the last preparations are completed prior to August 23 rd . We have made some subtle and not so subtle changes to the campus to improve our fine facilities and all work is slated to be completed by the time students arrive for school. Our teaching staff brings a few new faces and some familiar faces will be in new places from last year due to new directions staff members pursued following the 2016-17 school year. Starting in the Elementary, Mrs. Rose (formerly Ms. Moore; congrats on the summer wedding) will be the Elementary Spe- cial Education Teacher, taking over for Mrs. Vaughn. Mrs. Vaughn moved down two doors to take over the 2 nd Grade room, previously taught by Mrs. Nelson who elected to retire after many wonderful years of service to the Warner School District. Mrs. Heuttl will be joining us this year as an aide in the Elementary and you will find her in many different rooms throughout the day; she will also be taking over as director of Kids Care; we welcome her to the school family and look forward to her work with kids during and after school. In the Middle School/High School wing; Mrs. Zens will be found in the Middle School English/ Language Arts classroom, previously held by Mrs. McCord. We are excited to see how she can motivate and inspire kids to develop their reading and writing skills. Mrs. McKown, formerly in the lunchroom, will be shifting roles to work as an aide in the MS/HS primarily working with Mrs. Robinson. Mrs. Brown will also be joining our staff as an aide working with Mrs. Robinson as well. Mrs. Binger will be joining us part time this year; she will be working in the kitchen and helping out with Kids Care after school. We know all of these new faces will provide new knowledge and experiences that will help out students and staff grow, and they will reinforce the high standards that prior and current staff has already established. Many different resources and time have been committed to improvements around the school. We continue to add technology (smart screens in many MS/HS classrooms), dedicated chromebooks for 4 th and 5 th graders, new plumbing in the kitchen; just to name a few subtle changes. An overhauled playground (new concrete boundary, new monkey bars and swings, along with a Ga-Ga pit, and deep woodchips) and an improved south parking lot for the not so subtle changes. We believe students, staff and community will benefit from all the changes. The first opportunity for parents and students to meet the teachers and see their rooms will be Monday, August 21, 2017 at our back-to-school open house. Please plan on attending, doors are open from 5:00-7:00pm with 6 th Grade Orientation at 6:00pm & 9th Grade Orientation at 7:00 p.m., with classes starting Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 8:25 am. Dear Parents and Warner School District Patrons,

As the summer months slowly crawl by, it only takes one glance at the calendar to notice school will be starting in less than 20 days. No worries; Glen, Pat and Sye have been busy over the summer to make sure everything is ready for kids to return. The school building and surrounding facilities are getting their final touches as the last preparations are completed prior to August 23rd. We have made some subtle and not so subtle changes to the campus to

Dear Monarch Families,

On behalf of the staff at Warner School, I am excited to welcome you to the 2017-2018 school year. It has been a busy summer and we look forward to sharing our improvements. Notably, the playground underwent a facelift over the summer and now is sporting some new equipment and a fresh bed of engineered wood fiber. Not only is it spiffy to look at, the compaction ratings are better and it will be safer for our kids. The project has been in the works for a number of years and it would not have transpired without the support of the school board, staff and the community. I would also like to thank Stewart Nelson for his assistance with a few key logistics. It really does take a village. Thank you!

We invite students to experience their classrooms on Monday the 21st during Open House. Doors will open at 5:00 p.m. with 6th grade orientation in Mrs. Schwan’s classroom at 6:00 pm. The first day of school is slated for Wednesday August 23rd. We look forward to filling the halls with students and getting started “Building char-acter for lifelong learning and achievement.” Stop in, say hi, play a game of GaGa ball and welcome back to school!

PEANUT SAFE SCHOOL INFORMATION Warner School District Parents, Community and Staff:

At every district each new school year brings changes to curriculum, assessment, and staff. We also make changes to technology, books, equipment and even buses, and adjustments take time. Finding the right book, the right locker, the right classroom all takes time for students. And as parents we need some time to ad-just to different schedules, different homework, different needs of our kids.

We as administration also make changes to help protect the safety of the children who attend our school. We look for better ways to limit access to the buildings, safer facilities, safer equipment and even safer playgrounds. We are also aware of the dietary health needs of our students; we need to promote and prac-tice conscious dietary options even if the needs only affect a limited number of students/staff.

With that in mind, the Warner School District will be implementing a “Peanut Safe” Program for the 2017-2018 School Year. We will be implementing the following guidelines for all students, staff, and administra-tion.

“There are students in our school who have peanut/nut allergies. If exposed to peanuts or peanut products, the students may develop life-threatening allergic reactions that require emergency medical treatment. In an effort to meet the needs of students with severe aller-gies, the Warner School District building as of July 1, 2017 will go peanut-safe. Please re-frain from bringing into school any peanuts, peanut products, nuts or items processed in a plant where peanuts were processed. This extends to field trips, school events, extended day and summer camps. It is very important that you do not send any peanut products to school in sack lunches, snacks, birthday treats, etc. Food items from a bakery (home or purchased) such as cupcakes, doughnuts, and cookies are likely to be cross-contaminated with nuts and/or peanuts. Families can help ensure that our school stays incident free by reading the label on every package. In addition, in order to protect our children with allergies, amongst other reasons, we encourage children not to share their food or beverages with one another.”

We understand the implementation of this program will take some time to get accustomed to, but with will-ing parent participation, we can avoid a severe or even fatal allergic reaction. There are plenty of “Peanut-Safe” alternatives for treats/snacks that everyone will enjoy including but not limited to the list below (please check all labels on prepackaged items):

Examples of safe alternatives: Sun Nut Butter as a peanut butter substitute, Original Keebler Graham Crackers, Original Rice Krispies Treats, Original Keebler Club Crackers, Original or Cheddar Pepperidge Farms Goldfish Crackers, Kellogg’s Fruit Snacks, Sun Made Raisins, Kee-bler Scooby-Doo Graham Cracker Sticks, Skittles, Starbursts, Smarties, Nabisco Graham Crackers, Nabisco Cheese Nips, Original Cheese It Crackers, Pringles Potato Chips, etc. (Please keep in mind this is not a complete list, but only a starting point for options that are available as an alternative.)

Ingestion of peanuts/peanut products is only part of the safety concern for students with allergies. Please remind your children to wash hands and use good hygiene since contact with those products can also cause a reaction.

Please help protect our students with severe allergies by following the guidelines outlined above. We will continue to send out informational material and reminders, as we get them.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the priva-cy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for copies.

Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or mislead-ing. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a state-ment with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.

Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to re-lease any information from a student's education record. However, FERPA allows schools to dis-close those records, without consent, to the following par-ties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31):

School officials with legitimate educational interest;

Other schools to which a student is transferring;

Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;

Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;

Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;

Accrediting organizations;

To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;

Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and

State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.

Schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, schools must tell parents and eligible students about directory infor-mation and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not disclose directory infor-mation about them. Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under FERPA. The actual means of noti-fication (special letter, inclusion in a PTA bulletin, student hand-book, or newspaper article) is left to the discretion of each school.

For additional information or technical assistance, you may call (202) 260-3887 (voice). Individuals who use TDD may call the Federal Information Relay Service at 1-800-877-8339.

MEAL POLICY NEW FOR 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR

The goal of the Warner School District 6-5 is to provide students with healthy meals each day. However, unpaid charges place a financial burden on our Food Services Department. The purpose of this policy is to insure compliance with federal reporting requirements for the USDA Child Nutrition Program, and to provide oversight and accountability for the collection of outstanding student meal balances. The intent of this poli-cy is to establish uniform meal account procedures throughout Warner School District. The provisions of this policy pertain to regular priced school breakfast and lunch meals only. While the USDA Child Nutrition Program does not require that a student who pays for regular priced meals be served a meal without pay-ment, the Warner School District provides this policy as a courtesy to those students in the event that they forget or lose their lunch money. Families are encouraged to pre-pay for meals and money is accepted in the school office daily for payments as well as through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Elementary students:

Notices of low or negative balances will be sent out to parents/guardians through email, letters, and/or phone calls at regular intervals during the school year.

All delinquent accounts at the beginning of May of the current school year will be subject to collec-tions for payment.

If a child has money to purchase a reduced price or paid meal at the time of the meal service, the child will be provided a meal.

Middle School/High School students: Notices of low or negative balances will be sent out to parents/guardians through email, letters, and/

or phone calls at regular intervals during the school year. No charges are allowed for seconds and/or extra milk on any negative accounts or accounts with a ze-

ro balance. All delinquent accounts at the beginning of May of the current school year will be subject to collec-

tions for payment. If a child has money to purchase a reduced price or paid meal at the time of the meal service, the

child will be provided a meal. Seconds are charged at full price regardless if the student is on free or reduced meals or pays full

price for their first meal. Paid Students – Elementary, Middle School, and High School students will pay for meals at the district’s pub-lished standard rate each day. If a student’s account gets to a negative $20.00, the student will be offered an alternate meal for the day and will continue to be offered an alternate meal until the negative balance is taken care of. Reduced Students - Elementary, Middle School, and High School students will pay for meals at $0.30 for breakfast and $0.40 for lunch each day. If a student’s account gets to a negative $10.00, the student will be offered an alternate meal for the day and will continue to be offered an alternate meal until the negative balance is taken care of. Free Students – Elementary, Middle School, and High School students will be allowed to receive a free breakfast and a free lunch each day. Any seconds and/or extra milk must be paid for before receiving that benefit. Students are not allowed to have a negative balance. Parents/Guardians are responsible for meal payment to the food service program. The Warner School Dis-trict uses Infinite Campus as a computerized point of sale/cash register system. Parents/Guardians can view deposits and charges made to their student(s) account through the parent portal through Infinite Cam-pus. Students/Parents/Guardians pay for meals in advance with cash or a check payable to Warner School District or by logging into their parent portal and using a debit/credit card. Funds should be maintained in accounts to minimize the possibility that a child may be without meal money on any given day. Any remaining funds in a student’s account at the end of the current school year will be carried over to the next school year. Refunds will be sent to the parent/guardian for a withdrawn student, and for graduating students unless there are other siblings that will still be attending the Warner School District the following school year.
