On the 2nd June, we the Year 11 hospitality students held Australia’s Biggest Morning High Tea at our school to raise money for the Cancer Council.

We prepared four weeks in advance, cooking multiple amounts of delicious recipes for our teachers and school staff to enjoy. The task involved making a variety of different sandwiches such as feta and pumpkin, smoked salmon with beetroot, chicken and avocado pinwheels, ham, egg and pickle open sandwich and cucumber with lemon. We also made a variety of sweet and savoury snacks such as caramel slice, raspberry muffins, chocolate and walnut brownies, scones with jam and cream, herbed cheese crackers and cheese and chive muffins.

On the morning of the high-tea event we neatly presented the food on serving plates and decorated with flowers ready to serve to our guests. When our guests arrived we all had our own specific role. Some students were preparing and decorating the food on platters in the kitchen while others were collecting the plates and napkins to serve to the teachers and staff. There were two students organising the beverage area refilling and serving tea, coffee and milo. Two students greeted guests at the door and collected the gold coin donations. Other students mingled and served food to guests.

The event was a success and everyone really enjoyed the morning tea and treats. After clean-up we counted the donations and were delighted to read the final tally of $265 towards the Cancer Council 2016. We really enjoyed using our hospitality skills that we were taught over the last few months by Ms O’Sullivan.

We appreciated everybody’s kind and supportive comments about our service and it was great that the event went so well. We would like to thank everyone that came to the event and donated money for the Cancer Council.

As usual, Term 2 has passed at a fast pace. Students in senior school have finished Semester 1 courses, and where required sat exams and/or the newly introduced mandated externally set tasks for Year 12 students. For our Year 11 ATAR students, these exams had a different and more energetic pace associated with it. With Term 2 being a reporting term, our lower school students have been focused on exams where appropriate and in class tasks to finish off units of work. Our Year 10 students have taken their first steps towards Year 12 graduation with the sitting of OLNA, and our Year 7 and 9 students have sat NAPLAN testing, the results of which will be made available to parents later in Term 3. All in all, a busy term for both students and staff alike!

In between those system requirements, I am pleased to note that our students at Warnbro Community High School still participate in numerous extra-curricular opportunities and in events representing their school. In fact, this Bulletin is full of opportunities that students have undertaken. As always, this is an aspect that I am very proud of, and that is the increasing

From the Principal’s Desk

ways in which our students are giving back to the local community. As usual, I am delighted to hear how well our students represent our school – demonstrating the 3B’s: Be your Best, Be Responsible and Be Respectful. It is with great delight that I receive phone calls from event organisers, or emails from excursion providers telling me how wonderfully behaved and engaged the students are from this school. This is happening with increasing frequency, which is delightful.

I am really pleased to see our students developing resilience and a willingness to have a go at new challenges. I have been speaking with some of our students about the concept of failure, and it is part of the learning process to fail – that this is a First Attempt In Learning, and what we learn from the experience ensures that we can move onwards and upwards, as long as we listen to the feedback given and take steps to address areas of concern. That is where persistence and resilience comes into play. It is important that we work with our students to show them how to achieve this, and model how to rise to the challenges that they face in society. Throughout the rest of this year, and moving into 2017, we will be rolling out a number of initiatives to help student further develop their resilience and willingness to take on new challenges.

Term 3 will see the opening of the school canteen once more. We have finalised the tender process and have awarded the project to Prestige Catering, a Rockingham based company, who have significant experience in running school canteens in several local high schools. A copy of their menu will be on our website.

Students will have the ability to use eftpos facilities at the canteen, but please note that there will be a surcharge for that service.

It was very exciting to see at our P&C Annual General Meeting last month so many interested parents put their hand up to be involved in moving our P&C forward. I wish to welcome Ms Jillian Savory on board as our new P&C President, and extend a warm welcome and thank you to her new executive committee. I am sure that we will be hearing from them in the near future. It is timely for us to thank the outgoing president, Ms Jo Hollis and her outgoing committee for their efforts and support of the school over the past eight years. Their dedication in ensuring that the P&C stayed alive in a time where many schools were losing their P&C was very much appreciated by our school community. We are the only secondary school left locally to have a P&C, this is important to me as I believe that a school is ever richer for having both a P&C and a School Board.

Finally I wanted to say a very special thank you to another valued member of our school community – Mrs Riria Grant, our Foundation School Board Chairperson. It is with great sadness that the School Board accepted her resignation at the last Board meeting. Riria was an integral part of the process of us being awarded IPS status in late 2014 and has steered the Board truly as we have found our feet and explored just what it means to be an IPS School Board moving forward. I wish to thank Riria publicly for her support of the school and the schools’ direction, and I know that she will continue to contribute to the school community in as many ways as she is able to in the coming years.

From the Principal’s Desk

With that being said, I wish to call for nominations from interested parents who may wish to join our School Board as we now have a vacancy. It is very important to our Board that parents are involved at the Board level in the setting of the schools’ direction and targets moving forward. If you wish to know more about how our Board operates, and what is involved, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school for more information, or to put your name forward in nomination.

Thank you to parents who attended our parent/teacher evening on Tuesday! I wish all students and their families, as well as all of our staff, a well-deserved safe and relaxing break.

P&CMy name is Jillian Savory, I’m the new president of Warnbro Community High School P&C, I have two children at the high school and a third will attend in 2018.

I’m driven by being involved in my children’s education and want to help promote the interests of the school by bringing parents, citizens, pupils and teaching staff together. I hope to play a positive, active and effective role for a better community involvement.

We have some new faces on the P&C and we would love to see more!!!

We are a committed and focused group of individuals whose common goal is to help the Students and what we can achieve to benefit them, not just financially but on a volunteer level also.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE STUDENTS!

We would love support with fundraisers from our parent, carers and community. We are always open to any fresh ideas and suggestions. The P&C offers a great opportunity for all parents and carers to be involved in the school.

BUT… a P&C can only function effectively if you (the parents) become involved.

We would love to see you at our meetings, so be sure to keep an eye out for meeting times and dates on our school app, bulletin, text message and school notice board.

I’m looking forward to working with you all.

Jillian Savory P&C President

ANZAC DAY CEREMONYPrior to the Anzac Day Ceremony, our Year 9 HaSS class was learning about World War 1. We learnt why many men enlisted and what happened during the war. This gave us a good understanding about Anzac Day, so we could try to relate to the speeches at the ceremony. Our class also made red poppies to decorate the gym for the Anzac Ceremony.

At the ceremony there were a few guests from the Australian Defence Force to speak to us about the significance of Anzac Day to Australia and how it was our first war as a nation. After all the excellent and emotional speeches, the Australian and New Zealand anthems were played and a one minute silence was observed to remember those who had fallen for Australia in combat.

The ceremony was great and I think all of us have a new understanding of Anzac Day.

Tracy NicolaoWhat’s your job in the school and how long have you worked here?I have been at WCHS for 10 years. I am an English teacher currently teaching the Year 7s and 8s; and I’m the Year 10 Coordinator.

What do you like best about your job and the school?I love anything to do with the English language whether it’s learning a new word with the students or understanding the origins or inflections of obscure words – I would love to use the word peregrinations for instance but there’s not much call for it these days! I am getting paid to teach something that I love. The thing I like about our school is that it is an infinite resource of knowledge, there for the taking. The school is tireless in its endeavor to find innovative ways for students to embrace opportunities to learn.

If you could invite anyone (living or dead, real or fictional) to a party, who would it be and why?I’ve thought a great deal about this because you have to be very careful about guests who are very rowdy and might wreck the place, or just won’t go when they should. Despite all of that, I would still invite my English colleagues from school because we are all very close, and have great fun when we are together. Bob Geldof would be there just because he’s a good bloke; Dawn French because she likes to laugh, as would Jamie Oliver to do the catering.

If you had the power to change anything in the world, what would it be and why?I would mandate an individual poverty tax in the OECD to provide relief for the suffering in the underdeveloped countries. In Australia families would be given bonuses to build granny flats onto their homes for their elderly relatives, ‘Homeless’ would be an obscure concept. Not merging properly on the roads and not using indicators properly on roundabouts would mean instant imprisonment.

Chris PetchWhat’s your job in the school and how long have you worked here?I will have been at the school 8 years in July as the receptionist in the main admin building.

What do you like best about your job and the school?I love meeting people and talking to the students. There is always something interesting going on in the school, we have a lot of talented students here at Warnbro CHS.

If you could invite anyone (living or dead, real or fictional) to a party, who would it be and why?It would have to be Billy Connolly, he’s a very funny guy with a really interesting background. I’d like David Bowie as a guest too, it’s a shame he’s no longer with us, a very talented man – I bet he would have some good stories to tell!!

If you had the power to change anything in the world, what would it be and why?Scotland to beat England at everything!! On a more serious note (and probably more realistic than Scotland actually winning anything!) I’d like to see less litter around, we should look after our surroundings and take pride in our community.

Dylan McCoyWhat’s your job in the school and how long have you worked here? This is my second year at Warnbro and my first year teaching in Future Links. I was in the English department last year.

What do you like best about your job and the school? The best thing about working at the school is the awesome students that I get to teach. I love getting to know new people. Teaching at Warnbro allows me to do that every day.

If you could invite anyone (living or dead, real or fictional) to a party, who would it be and why?I would love to party with Prince. It would be rad to dress up in crazy gear with him and hit the dance floor. That guy was wild!

If you had the power to change anything in the world, what would it be and why?If I could change anything in the world, I would make sure the West Coast Eagles never win a premiership again.

Their success breaks my heart.

Jade CollinsWhat’s your job in the school and how long have you worked here?I am a Health and Physical Education Teacher. This is my second year at Warnbro CHS.

What do you like best about your job and the school? The department I work in would have to be the thing I like most about my job.

If you could invite anyone (living or dead, real or fictional) to a party, who would it be and why?Lebron James because he is Lebron James (A King).

If you had the power to change anything in the world, what would it be and why? Stop overpaying sports stars and give us poor teachers more money!

to meet the team goal of locating the geocache and taking it even further into the range. Some great navigational skills and team work meant that Team Gilligan were successful in achieving their goal, and safely made it back to the bus in one piece.

Kayaking from Yardie Creek Gorge up to Sandy Bay along the Ningaloo Reef was the highlight of day two. The group enjoyed a pleasant paddle through the 120,000+ year old gorge, spotting the black-footed rock wallabies that were perched precariously along the rock face. Out on to the reef we were lucky enough to paddle with Green Sea Turtles, and enjoy a pleasant paddle 12km up to Sandy Bay.

The beginning of Term 2 saw the Year 12 ATAR Outdoor Education class, more affectionately known as “Team Gilligan”, make the sixteen hour bus drive up to Exmouth for their first expedition of the year.

After a very, very, very long drive – made shorter thanks to the DJ skills of Mr Clark and Mr Watson – Team Gilligan arrived at Exmouth. For many it was the furthest north they had gone, and the 34° that welcomed us was a sheer delight from the wind and rain that we left in Warnbro. Day one saw the group hike across Cape Range National Park to locate various rock cairns, and ultimately find a secret hidden geocache from the Year 12 group of 2015. Temperatures soared above 40° and it was a real challenge

YEAR 12 ATAR OUTDOOR EDUCATION

Day three was a bit of a relief from the physical demands of the camp, and we went snorkelling at Turquoise Bay on Ningaloo Reef. The water was beautifully warm and crystal clear. Some of the students were lucky enough to swim with Green Turtles and also White-Tipped Reef Sharks!! It was a really tough way to spend the day – but hey, somebody has to do it!!

Day four, our last day of activities in Exmouth, saw Team Gilligan venture back to Cape Range National Park and complete a 50m abseil into Charles Knife Gorge. The views as we descended down into the gorge were amazing, and it was a great way to cap

off what had been an amazing few days. That night Team Gilligan debriefed their experience over the last week and the previous few years of Outdoor Education. It was quite an emotional thing to be a part of, and all agreed that the Team Gilligan “family” was the highlight of their high school experience so far.

So the last day was an early start – up at 4am to be on the road by 5am – and commence the long drive back to Perth. Needless to say spirits were high as we approached the lights of

the “big smoke”, and the bus became a hive of smiles, laughter, singing, and dancing, well, sort of. Arriving back at school at 9.30pm, we said our farewells and reflected on a totally amazing trip. It left many with a hollow feeling – only one more school camp left before the Year 12s leave school for good. At least we will always remember our Exmouth trip!!

Navigating by moonlight sounds like a challenge, right? Nineteen students from the Year 7 Adventure Recreation program endured tricky terrain as they navigated their way through the State Forest near Mundaring in the Perth hills by night, with a map and compass each and of course, the moonlight.

It was part of a two-night camping excursion, based at the Perth Hills Discovery Centre. With winter settling in early this year, the sunny days provided a warm respite from the increasingly cold nights, camping in tents.

The area is home to a wide array of rather friendly wildlife, including a flock of rainbow lorikeets. Penny from Western Shield, an organisation dedicated to protecting the native animals of Western Australia, brought along a range of rescued animals such as possums, an echidna and the

endangered Woylie – a small mammal that looks a bit like a Quokka. Students bottle-fed orphaned joeys and learnt what Western Shield is doing to both protect the native animals and eradicate feral species from Perth’s hills.

Upon returning to camp, students were greeted by yet another pleasant surprise, with Mr Walker – an Indigenous man from the Western Desert – making an axe from bush materials. He taught the students how to make their own axe using stone and a mixture of sap from a local tree and kangaroo dung. He also provided a

unique and invaluable insight into both Indigenous culture in Western Australia and the native flora and fauna in the area, including how to find some tasty bush tucker.

Want to know any more details about the expedition? Just ask any of the Year 7 Adventure Recreation students.

Year 7 Adventure Recreation Camp

YEAR 11 Outdoor Education Hamelin Bay ExpeditionOn Wednesday the 11th of May, ten Year 11 Outdoor Education students headed off on their mid-year expedition to Hamelin Bay. For the previous months, they had been honing their kayaking and mountain biking skills in preparation for this occasion.

The three days that followed were an intense experience for the students and staff as their leadership skills, decision making, and physical endurance was put to the test. The expedition was a “point-to-point” camp where all travel was done by kayak, hiking and mountain biking.

Extreme winds and swell challenged students while kayaking, there were about a dozen capsizes just trying to enter the water! With only pride damaged, the group completed their kayak and spent the night at Foul Bay (it’s more pleasant than it sounds). The next morning the “hike of joy” began and students spent the next 8 hours “enjoying” the Cape to Cape trail as they joyfully made their way to the Boranup forest, fully loaded with their hiking packs. Navigation skills were stretched (as were some friendships) as the hike proved far more difficult than anticipated by the group. After spending the night at Boranup Campground the group mountain biked their way through tight, winding tunnel tracks, gruelling up hills and the glorious “white-knuckle” down hills. Wednesday afternoon the group reached their final destination, Conto Camp ground having covered around 25km of trails.

The three days provided many memorable moments that the group will reflect on for years to come. Team “Head-Scratcher” were put to the test and made it through their point to point expedition far richer for the experience. Bring on expedition number two in September - hiking and abseiling the gorges of Kalbarri!

YEAR 9 ADVENTURE RECREATION Margaret River ExpeditionOn the 25th of May, seventeen of Warnbro’s finest Year 9 Adventure Recreation students headed to the Margaret River region for their third Adventure Recreation expedition. The next two days would see them hiking the Cape to Cape Trail from Prevelly to Redgate Beach and kayaking the Blackwood River.

Students started their hike with a solid downpour of rain. Their preparation was put to the test immediately with the group managing themselves extremely well in the difficult conditions. The day saw the group passing through some fantastic scenery and enjoying some of the longest beach sections of the Cape to Cape trail. Students commented that they particularly enjoyed walking the soft sand with their fully loaded hiking packs. The group gained some valuable experience in navigation techniques along with practising how to be self-sufficient, carrying all of their gear for the duration of the day. The group then travelled to Sues Bridge Campground, inland from Margaret River, where they enjoyed another downpour of rain as they were setting up camp and cooking their meals.

The next morning the students made their way down the Blackwood River covering about 10km of water in the half-day paddle. Students were challenged through narrow winding sections of the river and had some “interesting” situations arise when fallen trees presented particularly difficult obstacles to navigate. Capsizes were few but all of the students had their comfort levels tested through the white-water sections of the paddle. Possibly the biggest shock to the group was the extremely cold water temperature.

The look of surprise on the faces of those that went in was priceless! Once again students were treated to some spectacular views, only accessible by kayak.

Following the kayak on the Blackwood, this whirlwind expedition was drawing to a close. The return trip to school was a very quiet one with almost all students falling asleep on the journey, which speaks volumes about the intensity of the expedition they had just been on. All of the skills and experience gained on this trip will be drawn on for their next expedition in Term 4 – surfing, hiking and abseiling in Wilyabrup.

Connecting with the CommunityThe Year 12 Children, Family and Community students have worked hard during Term 2 to plan and create care packages to donate to The Salvation Army. As part of their studies into Families in Australia students have investigated and chosen interactive activities to include in their boxes. Each student started with their own shoe box which they decorated and filled with their two hand-made activities as well as a teddy bear which they had sewn themselves.

All members of the class had to apply problem-solving skills to ensure the completion of their care package by the pick-up date. Christian Jensen, a Rockingham Salvation Army representative, came to collect the care packages in Week 6 and shared with the class the role of the organisation in the local community. Students learnt where their hand-made creations would be going and who the recipients were likely to be.

The Year 12 Children, Family and Community class members should be commended for their positive attitude and hard work to ensure their care-package was completed to a high standard ready for donation.

CAREER VOYAGE IN YEAR 10As part of their Humanities and Social Sciences assessment, the Year 10 students were required to participate in Career Voyage. It was a series of quizzes designed to identify students’ areas of interest as well as occupations that students will be best at according to the answers given.

Despite the lengthy and tedious nature of the exercise, the Year 10s were pleased that they have learned a lot about themselves. Some had even identified areas which they were good at, which they had not previously recognised.

Students concluded that the exercise had helped them to get to know their strengths and the areas they need to work on to achieve the occupation they desire. It also raised their awareness of the skills and training required in attaining the qualification necessary for their chosen occupation.

NETBALL PROGRAM AND CARNIVALCITY OF ROCKINGHAM Award and Scholarship Scheme for 2015.Earlier this year four Warnbro Community High School students received certificates and cheques in an award ceremony at the City of Rockingham.

Year 10s• Molly McBeth received the City of

Rockingham Scholarship Award and $400 for outstanding academic achievement and commitment to WCHS in 2015

• Reece England and Magee Graham received the City of Rockingham Award and $100 for consistent academic achievement and commitment to WCHS in 2015

Year 7• Aiden Carle received the City of Rockingham

Award and $100 from Warnbro Primary School

The 2016 Netball Program runs over Terms 2 and 3 of each year. With the fantastic interest at trials, we have been successful in forming two highly competitive teams for both lower and middle school. In total we have forty Year 7-10 students from both Warnbro Community High School and Warnbro Education Support Centre competing for our school. The students train hard on Thursday afternoons after school with the help of some very dedicated teachers and senior school students.

With the program in full swing for the year the students took on their first challenge and competed at the South Metro Netball Carnival in Week 5 of this term. This event saw the girls represent the school with a wonderful attitude. The schools we competed against were some of the best netball schools in the state, making it exceptionally tough. The middle school team came out with a fantastic win over Melville Senior High School and the lower school team drew with Darling Range Sports College. Both accomplishments are to be commended (these schools deliver Netball as a specialised program!).

Over the day there were many challenges both on and off the court. The students were responsible for organising fair team rotations, timing and scoring of games and working with younger and older students. The students will forever remember the joy of singing on the bus, dancing at lunch time and the making of new friends, a fun day was had by all!

As Michael Jordan said, "Talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence wins championships."

We will continue to train hard this term for our next game which is against Atwell College, followed by games against Rockingham and Baldivis at the next carnival in Term 3.

Senior School Helpers: Hannah Spratt, Opal Trego, Tiara Trego, Natalya Barrett and Ginny Mokomoko.

Teachers: Miss Mowat, Miss Pike, Miss Goldsmith, Miss Collins, Miss Neville.

Congratulations to all of you.

DEBATE CLUB

Weeks after the debate club first established, it was clear that its members have honed the most effective skill needed for a high school student. Winning an argument against your teacher!

“Debate helps students master arguments

they are in disagreement with,” Ms Tara Pratt of Humanities and Social Sciences Department, told the Warnbro Bulletin. “It also pushes people to learn to be not just better at arguing but to become more empathetic people, and that’s what really speaks to us as an institution about the establishment of the debate club.”

The students were asked to argue that Australians should not visit the island of Bali as a gesture of protest for a recent bilateral event, a position the team opposed.

The feedback received from the judges was that the Warnbro Team, comprised of Levi Jones, Sophie Fludder, Jacob Colley, Frankie Fontanna and Taj Tuckey, effectively

made the case that in accepting the decision made by the Indonesian government; Australia was respecting its neighbour’s sovereignty. The judges decided that while the opposing team did not address all aspects of the argument, they did utilise a more sophisticated style of

argument. An approach our Warnbro team is currently working on.

Ms Pratt said the Warnbro Debate Club, which has

gradually expanded to include more Senior School students, aims to provide students with both research and thinking skills to assist them to navigate their

life and make responsible decisions as a young

adult. Nevertheless, Ms Pratt joked that the

students under her guidance did try to “talk themselves out of doing

extra work in class.”

“The purpose of the debate club is not to merely teach us to argue,” Levi said, “but to nurture our capacity to understand other people values and exercise empathy,” he concluded.

POLITICS AND LAW THE USE OF SATIRE IN POLITICAL CAMPAIGNSYear 9 students this semester have been investigating Australian politics and law. They conducted a research assessment investigating the ways in which voters’ choices are influenced at election time.

Students’ found the topic engaging and enjoyed being exposed to a range of media including television advertisements for political campaigns and the social media activity of political party members.

The students were introduced to the concept of satire in political cartoons and conducted analysis of the meaning behind some political cartoons. The Year 9s have shown exceptional understanding and creativity in this research assessment and were able to justify their use of different techniques to persuade their audience. This research assessment allowed students to pursue their own interests whilst gaining a valuable understanding of political parties and the techniques they employ to gain public support and thereby gain votes.

As part of the Year 12 Health Studies course students had to research a health related topic, which they would have to deliver to the Year 8 cohort. Each year the Year 12s hold the annual Health Fair and have to display and provide a small presentation. With one Year 12 class there were a total of ten different stations, where the Year 8’s rotated throughout with plenty to see and learn.

The Year 12s did well to deliver the information, interact with the younger students and had a little fun whilst presenting. Feedback from staff was overwhelming, as compliments were made on their presentations as to how well the Year 12s conducted themselves. Response from students said they enjoyed the day and learnt a lot on interesting topics.

Social Science’s Poetry

The Year 8s were tasked to devise a campaign for a social issue of their choice. Caris Taylor chose to focus on domestic violence and wrote this poem in support of her campaign.

Her soul slowly fades away

No more heart left to break

He has shown his true colours

Now she knows his love is fake

As raindrops fall from the cloud above

The tears roll down her face

Nothing can beat the fears

Of the screaming that she hears

Black and blue may not show

But if you saw this poor girl, you would know

That from now on she will fear every man

But just for now she will do what she can

Math Poem

Mathematics is full of fun, with so much to learn.

Profits are added, while losses are subtracted.

Degrees are multiplied, and percentage is divided.

Geometry is full of mystery, Algebra has a big history.

Integers as different as brothers, lines are parallel, angles are similar.

Maths is necessary in life, without it, it is difficult to survive.

GROUP FITNESS WITH JADE AND VANESSA!During Terms 1 and 2, group fitness instructors Jade Szann and Vanessa Newick from Aqua Jetty kindly offered up their time once a week to take group fitness sessions with the Year 10 Recreational Lifestyles class.

Recreational Lifestyles is a fitness-based course where students are encouraged to live healthy active lifestyles. In order for the students to get the best possible outcome from this course, they were required to partake in fitness sessions consisting of Spin, Metafit, Foam Rolling and Circuit Training. The students began with Spin Class at Aqua Jetty once a week in Term 1 with Jade. The students thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiasm she brought to the class, the encouragement she offered and the fact that they weren’t doing schoolwork!

During this time it just so happened that Vanessa (the hard nut!) was also available to take the class in Term 2. We decided to bring the fitness sessions to the school gym and allow the Year 10 Sport and Recreation or Outdoor Pursuits class to join in on the fun! They welcomed the idea with open arms, even though at times we had to work hard to motivate the students to achieve their full potential, but with Jade and Vanessa’s determination we got there in the end!

The instructors brought a very positive atmosphere to the school and pushed the students to their limits. I hope to have Jade and Vanessa back with us next semester and in years to come, to allow our students to get the best possible experience they can in Recreational Lifestyles.

Thank you to Mitchell Shellam and Ben Clark for offering up your classes to join in on the fitness sessions!

If you’re ever lost while making your way around Warnbro Community High School’s grounds, be sure to ask one of the Adventure Recreation students for directions.

Their well-tuned navigation skills won a swag of events recently at the 2016 Schools Orienteering Championships at Lake Leschenaultia in Perth’s Hills.

The Year 9 boys left no room for the competition in their field, winning 1st through to 9th place in their division, while the Year 10 girls were awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Kaimani Baas from Year 9 outperformed all students with the fastest time of the day in just over 29 minutes.

WCHS came third in the overall champion school – two points off first place. An incredible achievement, considering WCHS entered only half the categories this year.

This demonstrated just how competitive the WCHS Adventure Recreation students are. Congratulations to all students that were involved for the day, you have done yourselves, your school and your community proud.

Wayne from Skill Hire came to Warnbro CHS on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday last week for Try a Trade. I was able to build a picnic table and brick garden beds.Firstly we unloaded the trailer and sorted all the tools and other materials into piles. I put on a safety vest, boots and safety glasses. I then measured a length of wood with a tape measure marking it for where the screws go and where we had to cut the wood with a saw. Using a hammer and drill we put the legs together. Then with the measured wood that had been cut for the top we laid out and marked it for where the screws needed to go and then we drilled the holes. After assembling the top together using bolts we held it in place with the legs. I used a grinder to grind the ends off the bolts

The picnic bench was completed. We stood it up and sat on it to make sure it was safe. It was then time to pack the tools up and clean up.

We all shared pizza to celebrate our work.

There is nothing quite like being beaten by every single student I teach at a game of dirt bike racing on the X-Box... and every other game for that matter. This is something I discovered throughout this term as select groups of Future Links' students were rewarded for their positive behaviour with excursions to the Kwinana Zone. These students were able to show off their gaming ability as well as demonstrate teamwork and unity as they worked together, seamlessly beating every teacher that challenged them to a game. While it was a demoralising experience for the teachers, the students had a ball and should be proud of their achievements this semester.

Every Monday and Friday a group of students from the Future Links program at Warnbro Community High school go to Fremantle to do crossfit.

The people that come with us are Sinead and Millie who are youth workers at Rockingham YMCA then you have Michelle who is an Education Assistant at Warnbro Community High school. There is also Brent who is the personal trainer at the Avada Crossfit centre in Fremantle.

We have been going there for over a term now, the first time that we went he introduced us to what we were going to be doing and showed us around. We then started the exercises which we started on the bikes and then ended with a team game. As the weeks went on he started making it harder and harder each time. The group are now accomplishing things they have never been able to do like wall walk and box jumps. Overall I have really loved going to crossfit and I recommend more people should try it.

CROSS FIT

On Wednesday the 1st June, eleven students from Industry Links went to the Dwellingup bike trail with Mr Banzic and Miss Addison.

It was a great day especially when I kept having to stop in front of other students and they would always crash into the back of my bike and we’d nearly fall off. Miss Addison would laugh to the point she would nearly fall off her bike as well “HAHA”. There were heaps of giant rocks and really steep hills to go up and down, there were also giant roots sticking out of the ground.

The whole class separated into two different groups (girls and boys) the girls group had Miss Addison, and the boys group had Mr Banzic. It was all a really fun day, at the end of the day on our way back to school we all looked and felt dead as we were all really quiet and most of us were falling asleep on the bus.

As one of the students that went on this amazing excursion I would like to say a big thank you to Miss Addison and Mr Banzic for such a great day and I’d like to say thank you to the Physical Education Department for allowing us to use the bus and the bikes for our excursion.

Thank you to everyone on this excursion and the teachers who took us.

THE AMAZING RACE

The Fremantle Amazing Race was an event where students from the Community and Learning Links class competed in groups against each other. The aim of the race was to locate key landmarks and answer questions. The groups raced around Fremantle and needed to follow a map to find locations such as the Round House and The Town Hall. Students from both classes enjoyed the challenge of trying to find the quickest route to each location and along the way had the opportunity to see many historical sites in the Fremantle area. It was a tough physical challenge as each group covered approximately 4km on foot at a fast pace. Well done to Mr McCoy’s group, who were the winners of this event. We look forward to running a Perth CBD Amazing race later in the year.

GIRLS GALLERY TOUROn Wednesday the 1st June I had girls group and we went to Perth city to see the West Australian Art Gallery. It was really pretty and there was a feminist film about the past and ladies having their freedom which was funny and weird.

There was a cultural music workshop outside of the museum. There was a metal tunnel talker, Xylophones, drums and a funny looking mirror. We stopped for lunch and had donuts; it was a great day out!

Some of our senior school students got a team together to play against other schools in the area to compete in the Eagles vs. Dockers competition.

Many of them that hadn’t played before and did extremely well to work as a team and adapt to the rules quickly to produce a high end game of footy.

Each week we played schools around the Peel region including Living Waters, Mandurah Catholic College, Pinjarra Senior High School, Halls Head and Serpentine-Jarrahdale Grammar School.

With a few bumps and grazes, and learning the rules of the game the girl’s improvement was evident after each challenging week. We began to kick the goals and take the marks needed to prove we have what it takes to clash against the other schools.

Over the entire five weeks the girl’s attitude was excellent and they were always prepared to play as a team. They consistently applied themselves throughout the entire game till the final siren.

Well done girls for a fun season of footy!

iMEN ProjectOver the past three weeks we have participated in a six day course called the Kwinana Industrial Council iMen project.

The schools included: Baldivis Secondary College, Clontarf Academy, Comet Bay College, Gilmore College, Hamilton Senior High School, Kolbe Catholic College, Living Waters Lutheran College, Peter Carnley Anglican Community School, Rockingham Montessori School, Rockingham Senior High School, Safety Bay Senior High School, Seton Catholic College, The Kings College, Tranby College and Warnbro Community High School. We were both lucky enough to be selected.

The key role of the program was to promote the harmonious coexistence of industry, the community and the environment. We had the privilege of visiting many companies along the Kwinana industrial strip and the Fremantle area. The companies included iFAP, BP, CSBP and Fremantle Ports. Each of these companies play vital roles in the success of the Kwinana Industrial strip.

During the program we completed a certificate in basic fire awareness at iFAP. We also learnt what each company produces. We participated in activities which tested our limits. Some of these include sailing and climbing a 60 metre tower. We also participated in activities that bettered us as people. Some of these included team building and problem solving. Out of this experience we have learnt skills which could help us in the industrial field. We have also met people with common interest and have made lifelong friends. We both thoroughly enjoyed the program and recommend it to all students able to apply for next year’s intake.

YEAR 12 CERTIFICATE II HOSPITALITYRecently the Year 12 Certificate II Hospitality students had the opportunity to spend time at the Rockingham Autumn Centre. The purpose of our excursion was to allow all of us to demonstrate our hospitality skills. We attended for five Wednesdays in a row and spent our time rotating through the different areas of the centre. It was intimidating at first and we didn’t know what to expect but we soon discovered that they were more like us than we could ever have thought.

We prepared food and drinks in the cafeteria, kiosk, hobbies kitchen and the carpet bowls canteen. We all loved having the opportunity to practice our communication skills (we talked a lot). We worked side by side with the clubs members and learnt how to make cards, play carpet bowls, knit and crochet, whist helping share our knowledge on modern technology, shared recipe ideas and discussed what we were doing in our hospitality course and school in general. We are all looking forward to returning to The Autumn Centre soon to say hi and show our appreciation for them having us share their space.

THE FIVE KEYS TO CHILDREN’S SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS Parent GuideMichael E. Bernard, Ph.D. Professor, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne Founder, You Can Do It! Education

ABOUT YOU CAN DO IT! EDUCATION

You Can Do It! Education (YCDI) is a school-home collaborative approach to promoting the social-emotional well-being and achievement of all children.

YCDI has been developed by Professor Michael E. Bernard, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, The University of Melbourne. World-wide, YCDI programs are in 1,000s of early childhood centres (kindergarten, preparatory), primary and secondary schools in every state of Australia.

YCDI’s mission is to strengthen the five social and emotional skills and values (the “5 Keys”) which all children need to manage their own learning, behaviour and emotional well-being including: Confidence (work, social), Persistence, Organisation, Getting Along and Resilience. Unique among educational programs, YCDI emphasises the importance of teaching children different “Ways of Thinking” that help them to develop in each of these five areas.

YCDI’s programs for parents and teachers prepare them to teach children of all ages the 5 Keys for success and happiness. Additionally, YCDI’s programs describe for parents and teachers the things they can say and do to support the achievement and social-emotional well-being of children of all ages.

NEW BEGINNINGS…….NEW WORLD RECORD 2015, Free Community Event

On Saturday 27 June from 12 to 4 pm at the Warnbro Com-munity High a cultural festival will take place. Matariki is a Maori festival that signifies the beginning of a new lunar

RUGBY LEAGUE in Warnbro Community High SchoolRugby League in Warnbro Community High School is still in its relative infancy, having only taken its first tentative steps in the second semester of 2014. However, since its inception, this school-initiative has taken significant strides forward and has steadily gained momentum among the students of Warnbro Community High School and the community at large. Some of the milestones that have been achieved in the two years that the program has been running are:

• Regular year group carnivals and matches against other schools

• Rugby goal posts and a dedicated rugby field

• Creating rugby-focused Physical Education classes

• Developing mutual relationships with Western Australian Rugby League (WARL)

• Attracting outside professionals to coach during school Physical Education lessons

• Creating an afternoon based extra-mural program that caters for all students interested in learning the game and enjoying social matches against each other

Warnbro Community High School is steadily starting to gain a foothold as a rugby playing school. Our frequent attendance at carnivals and being a part of the Rugby Specialist Schools Program run by the NRL is certainly making ripples throughout the southern as well as the northern suburbs of Perth. Our success as a rugby playing school, however, should not be

measured in terms of the scoreboard but through our students learning values that rugby often reveals and instills in players of the game; team work, courage, determination, resilience in the face of defeat and humility in victory. Our Year 10 rugby boys have epitomised these values this past semester, having been soundly beaten by all opposition, yet have played themselves to a standstill in their heroic efforts to be competitive. I am proud of their efforts which has not gone unnoticed - recent comments by the Deputy Principal of Lakelands bares testimony to their outstanding courage and commitment.

Warnbro Community High School is certainly committed to rugby because of the tremendous benefits it brings to the students as well as to the community. Our recent acquisition of rugby posts and a rugby field have somewhat forever changed the skyline of the school. It is an absolute pleasure to watch the students utilising these facilities throughout the school day, whether it is kicking for posts after school, or boys and girls playing a game of touch footy during recess or lunch.

The school has reinforced this commitment by creating ‘rugby-focused’ Physical Education classes in school time. The success of these classes has been tremendous and it is most satisfying to observe the boys and girls eagerness in setting up their drills and skills for the lesson, and to see how engaged they are in the rugby activities and instructions. The beauty about this is that there has been a distinct ‘carry over’ effect into other sports and activities that these classes have done during Physical Education.

There is still much to do. Systems need to be developed particularly in the domain of behaviour management of students that want to represent the school in Rugby League competitions. Rugby League must be more than just playing the game but must also involve preparation of the students both physically and mentally; thus, education in fitness conditioning and general wellbeing will be integrated into the program helping to augment their heath education. To help cater for the students’ fitness needs, the school’s executive team, have already put plans in place to establish an outdoor fitness gymnasium and an indoor weights centre. These assets will prove invaluable to the school and will provide not only sports related opportunities to the student body, but will also bolster the already impressive Physical Education program.

In conclusion I would like to say that I personally believe that school-based sports should not be underestimated in terms of providing opportunities for those who would otherwise not have access to those sports. It also provides opportunities for teachers to develop rapport with students that extends well beyond the sports field but spills over into the classroom. The atmosphere of the school changes, there is a sense of ownership, of being part of something, and before you know it – suddenly, there is that distinct sense of pride, win or lose. Rugby League is one of a number of sports that is growing within the school community and I feel excited about our future.
