Multi Genre Project: Part I Research•Today we will be starting your Multi-Genre Project. One part of this project is your Mini-Research paper. The paper will be short one pager where you do the following:

•Pose a researchable question that is based on your book.

• For example, if your book deals with cloning, you might ask “Should human cloning be allowed?”

•After you have a question, you will take a side on your question.

•Then find two sources help answer your question.

•Your paper will include a thesis where you take a side and two pieces of evidence from your sources to support your side.

•Proper citations and a bibliography.

Ways to Use Your Sources Review•There are 3 major ways you can present information from a source in your paper:

•Direct quotation

•Summary

•Paraphrase

•Make sure your evidence supports your thesis.

Page 4: Warm Up! Grab a computer and get logged on. Brainstorm the issues and themes from your book and possible research questions you might have after reading

For example… My thesis is:

The Japanese military were excessively brutal to their prisoners of war during World War II.

Direct QuotationA

“direct quote” is a string of words taken from the text EXACTLY how it is written.

“The Japanese therefore treated enemy POWs as disgraced nonpersons, who in surrendering had dishonored themselves and forfeited their rights to humane treatment” (Astore 152).

We do this if we like the way the author put something and do not want to change his or her words.

Summary Sometimes, your source will go into a lot of detail on a topic, but you just need to give a general idea.

Here is my summary of the same quote:

The Japanese believe that surrendering during a war is completely disgraceful. Due to this believe, POWs they captured were treated very badly. POWs faced in humane treatment at the hands of the Japanese military (Astore 152).

Paraphrase Sometimes, you want to say BASICALLY the same thing as an author, but you want to say it differently, in your own words. This is called paraphrasing.

From source: “Lacking medical care and fed a meager diet, POWs often succumbed to beriberi, cholera, dysentery, malaria, or malnutrition. Others were tortured to death or killed in work-related accidents.”

From student’s paper: POWs were not given medicine or medical treatment and were fed badly. Some were tortured and died. Others died at work (Astore 152).

From student’s paper: There were no doctors or medicine available, so many POWS died of diseases. Some soldiers were tortured and died that way. Still others died because of work (Astore 152).

Citations for your BibliographyGo to easybib.com and copy and paste the link into the form.

Then, follow the instructions. Fill in all of the information you can. If you don’t have some elements, leave it blank. However, do your best to fill it all in.

For your project:•You can use only one direct quote. Your other piece of evidence MUST be paraphrased or summarized.

•Do not forget parenthetical citations. Otherwise, it’s plagiarized.

Parenthetical Citations!•Internet Sources: When citing an Internet source, give only the name of the author, and if that is not provided, give the name of the Internet site. You do not have to put page numbers. For Example: (Smith) or (The Website of Many Uses).

•Where to put the parenthetical citations:Place parenthetical citations at the end of the sentence you are paraphrasing and quoting. For example: The destruction of the argentine is due to many socioeconomic factors (Taylor 33).

Even when quoting, place the parenthetical citations after the quotations. For example: "Mamma always said stupid is as stupid does" (Gump 89).

Sample Research PaperHowever, Americans should follow these new food

pyramid (MyPlate) guidelines set up by the USDA because it promotes overall health and can actually be achieved on a modest budget.

Many people have complained that the new MyPlate guidelines are not feasible for lower income families; however, the guidelines can indeed be followed on a budget. According to Dr. Monique Ryan, eating a healthy diet on a budget will involve more planning ahead. If families plan, they can get all of the healthy fresh foods they need without breaking the bank. A good plan and checking local stores for sales and coupons is key to making healthy, budget friendly meals (Ryan).  Works Cited

Due Today by the end of class! No exceptions.

•Your researchable question.

•Your thesis.

•Two sources that support your stance.

•Please either handwrite them and turn them into the tray or email them to me at:
