Political Maps: used to show political units (countries, states, counties, towns)

Historical/Special Purpose Maps: used to show specific information (battles in a war or where natural resources can be found in a given area)

found at the top of the map Titles can help you figure

out what type of map you’re looking at

Titles can also tell you the focus of the map

Compass Rose The Compass Rose

shows which way the directions north (N), south (S), east (E) and west (W) point on the map

Long ago, maps were not always oriented the same way!

Describe the relative location of Utah using the directions in the Compass Rose.

Grid- Latitude & Longitude Maps show (imaginary) Grid Lines running both north to south and east to west

Grid Lines represent lines of Latitude & Longitude on the map

You can use lines of Latitude and Longitude to pinpoint any place on the globe

Lines of Longitude run NORTH to SOUTH
