Vocabulary

• Education- consist of the roles and norms that ensure the transmission of knowledge, values, and patterns of behavior from one generation to the next.

Vocabulary

• Schooling- Instruction by specially trained teachers who follow officially recognized policies.

Functionalist Perspective

• Functionalist—schools help maintain the stability and smooth operation of society.

• Teaching knowledge and skills– Education gives you the basics to make it in the

adult world.– Core curriculum: Reading, Math, Science, and

Social studies.

• However, for society to develop we need to acquire new technology and discoveries.

• Transmission of culture– After family, schools are the second means of

reinforcing norms, values and beliefs.• We pass down core values in order for our

society to survive.– Examples: patriotism, loyalty, acceptable forms of

behavior.

World View

USA• Capitalism• Individualism• democracy

Japan• Conformity• Cooperation• Group loyalty• Respect for elders

• Social integration– The US is a nation of immigrants. – As such, we strive to create a national identity

through teaching and reinforcing common values.

• Occupational placement– Beginning in elementary school you are tested and

identified for special talents or intelligence. – These test continue for as long as you are in

school. – Based on your scores you will either be steered

towards college or non-college programs.

Group work

• Students will be broken into 4 topics: Teaching knowledge and skills, transmission of culture, social integration and occupational placement.

• Groups will need to compare/contrast their topic between the US and another 1st world country.

• Group will need to present power point and email to myself as proof of mastery.

WARM UP

What are some of the current issues in education?

Example: School choice and charter schools

• Educational reform– To address a decline in the level of quality

of education; has led to some improvements

• Educational alternatives– Provides school choice through vouchers,

charter schools, and options such as homeschooling

• Violence in the schools– Has led to the use of security measures,

zero tolerance policies, and conflict-resolution programs

• Bilingual education– Controversial, particularly in states with

many Hispanics; has led to “English Only” movement

Conflict Perspective

Conflict—the educational system serves to limit the potential of certain people and groups to

gain power and social rewards

• Social Control– Remember, school is an agent of social control.

– According to Conflict Perspective schools are there to produce unquestioning citizens that will accept basic inequalities in the social system.

• Hidden curriculum– The transmission of goals that are not openly

acknowledged. Teaching conservative values that are focused on obedience to authority.

– In other words you’re actively serving the dominant group without even being aware of it.

• Tracking– Assigning students to different types of education

such as: general ,vocational-tech, and college prep.

– Tracking is based on standardized test, grades and evaluations.

– Lower social classes and minorities are overwhelmingly placed in general educational classes.

INDIVIDUAL Work

• You will do research on tracking and the hidden curriculum.

• You may use laptops or iPhones. • You must answer the question of “does the

educational system help to maintain social inequality”.

• You must defend your position in 3-4 paragraphs or 1 page at least.

WARM UP 12/10/14

What is the hidden curriculum?Give at least one example that we discussed

yesterday

3rd block

• Per Tre’s request:

– CNN Student news

• Interactionist – students’ educational achievements and success

are shaped in part by teacher-student interactions

• Studies have shown that students tend to fall under the premise of the self-fulfilling prophecy.

• Self-fulfilling prophecy- a prediction that leads to behavior that makes the prediction come true.

• Teachers, through words and actions, let students know what is expected of them, and the students performs according to these expectations.– Students who are expected to achieve come to

think of themselves as bright and capable because they have been, and continue to be, treated as bright and capable people.

– Students not expected to achieve, on the other hand, may come to think of themselves as inferior.

• Why are interactionist sociologists interested in the self-fulfilling prophecy?

• Answer: because they think that face-to-face learning is the most important, so a teacher’s view of a student is one of the most influential things a student learns

• You will create a fact sheet detailing how your district funds public schools, the student population, racial makeup, number of teachers.

• To include in your factsheet:How are funds generateddo all schools receive equal fundinghow much is spent per studentCompare/contrast CMS with Union county schools

and Gaston county schools.
