Nadi Al Quoz

Art and design intersect during November in Alserkal Avenue, a month of exhibitions, talks, performances, workshops, and warehouse takeovers that highlight this inspiring crossroad.

This is also the month during which Abu Dhabi Art and Dubai Design Week take place, further cementing the bridge between these two increasingly connected worlds.

Here on the Avenue, we’re celebrating a decade of our community, which is more alive than ever. We welcome you to explore our contemporary art galleries who open their new shows during Galleries Night on 12 November, our original concepts, as well as guest exhibitions in our warehouse takeovers. Make sure to visit Adapt to Survive: Notes from the Future at Concrete, an exhibition held in collaboration with Hayward Gallery, London, that explores the timely topic of futurism.

We also invite you to listen to our podcasts and read our features about our ongoing programme and beyond on Folio at alserkalavenue.ae/folio.

The design of our November in Alserkal Avenue programme is inspired by Alserkal Programming’s annual thematic, which through the 2018-2019 Fall, Spring, and Summer seasons will explore three definitions of Maintenance taken from the technical realm; Preventative, Corrective, and Predictive.

We can’t wait to see you around our lanes, and hope you enjoy exploring November in Alserkal Avenue.

November in Alserkal Avenue

1X1 GALLERY Id-od, and other dimensions... | Sunil GawdeUntil 20 November

Warehouse 10

Sunil Gawde’s kinetic works invite audiences to

see, and not just look. “What you think you see,

might not be what is,” he explains. Consisting of

a series of visual haikus which aim to challenge

our ideas and beliefs of perception and reality,

the works embody a sense of balance between

movement and stillness.

AYYAM GALLERY*Beneath the Rubble | Thaier Helal12 November - 28 December

Warehouse 11

Thaier Helal’s new works are inspired by the

rugged terrain, the variation of colours, and

the drastic destruction that has occurred in

his native Syria over the last seven years. His

sculptural canvases provide dense horizontal

layers, offering comparison to debris, bombed-

out buildings, and ruins - and act as a way for the

artist to escape layers of destruction.

CARBON 12Take Me to Your Leader | Anahita Razmi12 November - 5 January 2019

Warehouse 37

Anahita Razmi’s third solo exhibition at

Carbon 12 marks the gallery’s 10th anniversary

and 65th exhibition. It brings together new video,

print, and sculptural works that explore

the complexities of (visual) language and

power structures - specifically in relation to

contemporary Eastern cultures and politics.

Playing with words and images, the artist studies

the potential that lies in failed communication.

CONCRETE Adapt to Survive: Notes from the Future7-21 November

Concrete

Held in collaboration with Hayward Gallery,

London, Adapt to Survive: Notes from the

Future explores the idea that Darwin’s theory

of evolution can serve as a metaphor for a

future-facing strategy for survival and growth.

This group exhibition, curated by Dr Cliff Lauson,

brings together works by Andreas Angelidakis,

Julian Charrière, Youmna Chlala, Rainer Ganahl,

Marguerite Humeau, Ann Lislegaard, and

Bedwyr Williams.

CUSTOT GALLERY DUBAIA Still Life Retrospective | Fernando Botero12 November - 10 February 2019

Warehouse 84

A major show of paintings, drawings, and

watercolours by internationally-renowned

Colombian artist Fernando Botero, this

exhibition features works from the artist’s own

collection. Created between 1980 and 2018,

30 still-life works pay tribute to the Old Master

paintings Botero studied as a young student in

Europe during the 1950s.

D.ACADEMYMaterial PursuitsUntil 24 November

Warehouse 44

Material Pursuits: Objects, Prototypes, and

Material Explorations is an exhibition of designs

by graduates of the College of Architecture, Art

and Design at the American University of Sharjah.

Their exploratory works are the result of non-

linear processes, navigating between research,

fabrication, and design.

GALLERY ISABELLE VAN DEN EYNDE*When the Dates Turn Red | Hoda Tawakol12 November - 3 January 2019

Warehouse 17

Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde presents the first

solo exhibition of Hamburg-based Egyptian artist

Hoda Tawakol. Her international background

and Egyptian roots are integral to her work and

practice, within which she explores traditional

imageries and iconographies of the geopolitical

climate of the Middle East and relates them to her

role and position in society as a woman.

GREEN ART GALLERYAntechamber | Ana Mazzei12 November - 12 January 2019

Warehouse 28

For Brazilian artist Ana Mazzei, who presents her first solo show at Green Art Gallery, art, architecture, and landscapes construct a fiction that connects them. Mazzei’s widely experimental practice appropriates different sensorial materials, connecting to the environments in which she works.

GREY NOISEThe Word for World | Joana Escoval12 November - 3 January 2019

Warehouse 24

In her first solo exhibition at Grey Noise, Portuguese artist Joana Escoval presents sculptures mainly made of precious metals. The fact that these components are conductors, electric and otherwise, is intimately related to their process of creation as objects. Compounded or purified, these elements are charged with energies that unite the material and the spiritual.

GULF PHOTO PLUSBedu | Farah Foudeh12 November - 27 January 2019

Warehouse 36

Forever represented as the nomadic man living

a quaint life in the desert, the bedu man is seen as immune to the impact of modernity. Working in collaboration with Bedouin men of the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan, Farah Foudeh offers an alternative take on the viewer’s vision of man, the desert, and the relationship that binds them.

SALSALI PRIVATE MUSEUM#WETOO11 November - 11 February 2019

Warehouse 14

A group exhibition, #WETOO is a tribute and obeisance to female artists from the Middle East and to their role, influence, and contribution to arts and culture. The works on show are a selection from Ramin Salsali’s private collection.

SHOWCASE Layered Verses | Simon Back

12 November - 12 December

Warehouse 35

The primary influences found in Simon Back’s paintings have been drawn from his childhood environment - for example, his use and necessity for space is an element borne from the clean, open expansiveness of the Zimbabwean countryside. An important theme running through Back’s work has been the exploration of sacrifice, a concept incorporated and explored as both imagery, and as a working process.

THEJAMJAROccupy | Are We All Connected? | Nasir NasrallahUntil 6 January 2019

Warehouse 74

For this edition of Occupy, artist and curator Nasir Nasrallah has created postcard illustrations that form a bigger picture, like pieces of a puzzle. A continuation of his mail series, these postcards will be sent by the artist to people residing in different places. Through this gesture, the recipients become connected.

THE THIRD LINE*Gallery 1: Safina | Ala Ebtekar Gallery 2: Hoda Lutfi12 November - 5 January 2019

Warehouse 78/80

Ala Ebtekar’s practice is informed by history, Persian mythology, science, and philosophy, which he juxtaposes with contemporary and pop-culture elements. Hoda Lutfi is a cultural, feminist historian whose work in the field of the visual arts translates these affiliations in multiple complex ways.

JEAN-PAUL NAJAR FOUNDATIONThe Monochrome Revisited Until 28 February 2019

Warehouse 45

Exploring the history and evolution of the monochrome, this group exhibition is divided into three parts: the first focuses on the ‘first monochromes’ from the 17th to the 19th centuries; the second section draws inspiration

from Marcia Hafif’s seminal text Beginning

Again; the final part looks at how artists continue to engage with the monochrome to explore contemporary issues. Featured artists include Miya Ando, Mohammad Kazem, Lucio Pozzi, Hassan Sharif, and Susanna Tanger.

LA GALERIE NATIONALEThe Apartment12 November - 1 March 2019

Warehouse 27

For its sixth edition of The Apartment, La Galerie Nationale presents work by the Italian painter Marco Sitzia for the first time in the Middle East. These works will be shown alongside sculptures and ceramics from the mid-20th century, featuring pieces by Henri Laurens, Maxime Old, Pierre Jeanneret, Jean Royere and Meret Oppenheim.

LAWRIE SHABIBI*Impossible Ordinary | Nadia Kaabi-Linke8 November - January 2019

Warehouse 21

Nadia Kaabi-Linke’s third solo exhibition at the gallery features a new body of works, from paintings to installations. The Berlin-based Tunisian/Ukranian artist’s practice is intertwined with socio-psychological topics: perception, memory, as well as geographically and politically constructed identities.

LEILA HELLER GALLERY*Nancy Lorenz12 November - 5 January 2019

Warehouse 86/87

Leila Heller Gallery presents a solo exhibition

by Nancy Lorenz. The New York-based artist’s

works juxtapose motifs from East Asia, specifically

Japan, with commonplace materials to produce

transformative pieces gilded in gold, silver, and

mother-of-pearl.

GUEST EXHIBITION | THE AGE OF NEW MEDIA WAREHOUSE 596 November - 16 December

The Atassi Foundation presents The Age of New

Media, an exhibition which explores the value of a painting - both in its classical sense and form, as well as its value in its contemporary nature. Highlights include pieces by Laila Mureiweid and Kevork Mourad, who showcases his work in the UAE for the first time.

PEAKS AND DUNES WAREHOUSE 58 6-17 November

This guest exhibition by SEPTIEME ETAGE explores a fashion dialogue between Swiss and Middle Eastern cultures. In collaboration with Mode Suisse, Fluxlaboratory, and local fashion icons, it includes a street style exhibition by the Facehunter, screenings, a VR experience, and a library of publications from both regions.

AKKA PROJECT WAREHOUSE 6012 November - 6 December

Mozambican artist Goncalo Mabunda fills the Akka Project exhibition space with Kalashnikovs, rockets and grenades transformed into artworks. Thrones and anthropomorphic masks become an ironic comment on his childhood experience of the civil war in Mozambique.

POP-UP 47 WAREHOUSE 473, 16 & 17 November

Warehouse 47 has transformed into a space to support homegrown concepts from our wider community, and will feature a changing lineup of local brands and businesses.

ALSERKAL PROGRAMMING ANNUAL THEMATIC ‘MAINTENANCE’

FALL 2018 | PREVENTATIVE

SPRING 2019 | CORRECTIVE

SUMMER 2019 | PREDICTIVE

Throughout Fall 2018 and into the Spring and Summer of 2019, Alserkal Programming will explore an annual thematic - Maintenance. Through the subthemes of Preventative, Corrective, and Predictive Maintenance, the programme will investigate ways through which technology and innovation will shape our future. How do we plan to adapt to the changing landscape? Could shifting our focus from innovation towards discourses around ‘maintenance’ instead–within and beyond the realm of infrastructure–urge us to reconsider our present moment?

Full details on how to get involved in the Preventative Maintenance programme taking place across November and December are available on alserkalavenue.ae.

PECHA KUCHA NIGHT | MAKE IT NEW

A collaboration between Alserkal Avenue

and UAE Modern, this PechaKucha Night

looks at the future, sustainability, and

modernity as driving forces in the UAE.

Following the global format of 20 slides

for 20 seconds, topics will include design,

public spaces, new technologies, energy,

travel, and more.

Throughout Fall 2018 and into the Spring and Summer of 2019, Alserkal Programming will explore an annual thematic - Maintenance. Could shifting our focus from innovation towards discourses around ‘maintenance’ instead–within and beyond the realm of infrastructure–urge us to reconsider our present moment?

1X1 GALLERY Id-od, and other dimensions... | Sunil GawdeUntil 20 November

Warehouse 10

Sunil Gawde’s kinetic works invite audiences to

see, and not just look. “What you think you see,

might not be what is,” he explains. Consisting of

a series of visual haikus which aim to challenge

our ideas and beliefs of perception and reality,

the works embody a sense of balance between

movement and stillness.

AYYAM GALLERY*Beneath the Rubble | Thaier Helal12 November - 28 December

Warehouse 11

Thaier Helal’s new works are inspired by the

rugged terrain, the variation of colours, and

the drastic destruction that has occurred in

his native Syria over the last seven years. His

sculptural canvases provide dense horizontal

layers, offering comparison to debris, bombed-

out buildings, and ruins - and act as a way for the

artist to escape layers of destruction.

CARBON 12Take Me to Your Leader | Anahita Razmi12 November - 5 January 2019

Warehouse 37

Anahita Razmi’s third solo exhibition at

Carbon 12 marks the gallery’s 10th anniversary

and 65th exhibition. It brings together new video,

print, and sculptural works that explore

the complexities of (visual) language and

power structures - specifically in relation to

contemporary Eastern cultures and politics.

Playing with words and images, the artist studies

the potential that lies in failed communication.

CONCRETE Adapt to Survive: Notes from the Future7-21 November

Concrete

Held in collaboration with Hayward Gallery,

London, Adapt to Survive: Notes from the

Future explores the idea that Darwin’s theory

of evolution can serve as a metaphor for a

future-facing strategy for survival and growth.

This group exhibition, curated by Dr Cliff Lauson,

brings together works by Andreas Angelidakis,

Julian Charrière, Youmna Chlala, Rainer Ganahl,

Marguerite Humeau, Ann Lislegaard, and

Bedwyr Williams.

CUSTOT GALLERY DUBAIA Still Life Retrospective | Fernando Botero12 November - 10 February 2019

Warehouse 84

A major show of paintings, drawings, and

watercolours by internationally-renowned

Colombian artist Fernando Botero, this

exhibition features works from the artist’s own

collection. Created between 1980 and 2018,

30 still-life works pay tribute to the Old Master

paintings Botero studied as a young student in

Europe during the 1950s.

D.ACADEMYMaterial PursuitsUntil 24 November

Warehouse 44

Material Pursuits: Objects, Prototypes, and

Material Explorations is an exhibition of designs

by graduates of the College of Architecture, Art

and Design at the American University of Sharjah.

Their exploratory works are the result of non-

linear processes, navigating between research,

fabrication, and design.

GALLERY ISABELLE VAN DEN EYNDE*When the Dates Turn Red | Hoda Tawakol12 November - 3 January 2019

Warehouse 17

Gallery Isabelle van den Eynde presents the first

solo exhibition of Hamburg-based Egyptian artist

Hoda Tawakol. Her international background

and Egyptian roots are integral to her work and

practice, within which she explores traditional

imageries and iconographies of the geopolitical

climate of the Middle East and relates them to her

role and position in society as a woman.

GREEN ART GALLERYAntechamber | Ana Mazzei12 November - 12 January 2019

Warehouse 28

For Brazilian artist Ana Mazzei, who presents her first solo show at Green Art Gallery, art, architecture, and landscapes construct a fiction that connects them. Mazzei’s widely experimental practice appropriates different sensorial materials, connecting to the environments in which she works.

GREY NOISEThe Word for World | Joana Escoval12 November - 3 January 2019

Warehouse 24

In her first solo exhibition at Grey Noise, Portuguese artist Joana Escoval presents sculptures mainly made of precious metals. The fact that these components are conductors, electric and otherwise, is intimately related to their process of creation as objects. Compounded or purified, these elements are charged with energies that unite the material and the spiritual.

GULF PHOTO PLUSBedu | Farah Foudeh12 November - 27 January 2019

Warehouse 36

Forever represented as the nomadic man living

a quaint life in the desert, the bedu man is seen as immune to the impact of modernity. Working in collaboration with Bedouin men of the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan, Farah Foudeh offers an alternative take on the viewer’s vision of man, the desert, and the relationship that binds them.

SALSALI PRIVATE MUSEUM#WETOO11 November - 11 February 2019

Warehouse 14

A group exhibition, #WETOO is a tribute and obeisance to female artists from the Middle East and to their role, influence, and contribution to arts and culture. The works on show are a selection from Ramin Salsali’s private collection.

SHOWCASE Layered Verses | Simon Back

12 November - 12 December

Warehouse 35

The primary influences found in Simon Back’s paintings have been drawn from his childhood environment - for example, his use and necessity for space is an element borne from the clean, open expansiveness of the Zimbabwean countryside. An important theme running through Back’s work has been the exploration of sacrifice, a concept incorporated and explored as both imagery, and as a working process.

1X1 GALLERY Id-od, and other dimensions... | Sunil GawdeUntil 20 November

Warehouse 10

Sunil Gawde’s kinetic works invite audiences to

see, and not just look. “What you think you see,

might not be what is,” he explains. Consisting of

a series of visual haikus which aim to challenge

our ideas and beliefs of perception and reality,

the works embody a sense of balance between

movement and stillness.

AYYAM GALLERY*Beneath the Rubble | Thaier Helal12 November - 28 December

Warehouse 11

Thaier Helal’s new works are inspired by the

rugged terrain, the variation of colours, and

the drastic destruction that has occurred in

his native Syria over the last seven years. His

sculptural canvases provide dense horizontal

layers, offering comparison to debris, bombed-

out buildings, and ruins - and act as a way for the

artist to escape layers of destruction.
