Spring 2012Chattanooga, Tennessee

When it came time for Chattanooga couple Elaine

Merriman and Brad Clark to start planning their wedding, they decided to venture beyond the norm. “We aren’t having any bridesmaids or groomsmen, and we don’t like cake, so we aren’t having one of those either!,” says Merriman. What they are doing is hosting their reception in SPACE at Warehouse Row, giving makeup palettes from The Cosmetic Market as hostess gifts, and planning to hit The Social at Public House for their reception after-party. Merriman’s

experience integrating Warehouse Row into her upcoming nuptials (May 19!) got us thinking about everything that Warehouse Row has to offer prospective brides, grooms, and those who attend weddings.

Warehouse Row is a great one-stop shop for wedding inspiration. From wedding hair and makeup, to custom invitations, gift registries, jewelry, fashions, wedding planning services, engagement gifts, and catering options, Warehouse Row has it all. Discover more in our feature story on pages 4-5.

Not all cities appreciate great design, but Chattanooga gets

it. This is why decision makers at Warehouse Row were prepared to invest in the kind of high-style design that would elevate Warehouse Row to world-class destination status. As Chattanooga has undergone an artistic transformation in recent years, so has Warehouse Row. Just this past January, The New York Times recommended Chattanooga (and Warehouse Row) as one of its top 45 places to go in 2012.

Created by Warehouse Row’s own REVIVAL STUDIO, the North Building interiors now feature quirky vignettes that crash re-purposed industrial salvage, Deco-

inspired upholstery, and a mélange of natural organic elements into a clever design experience.

The investment is already paying off, with national tenants like Chicago-based marketing firm Two by Four announcing new offices in the North Building. Two by Four president David Stevenson says,“With a city that’s focused on promoting a creative culture, and amenities like gigabit-per-second Internet service, Warehouse Row was the ideal location for our expansion.”

For more information about amenities and office leasing, contact John Healy at 423.266.5587 or [email protected].

The New NorthWarehouse Row’s North Building renovations feature world-class style design and amenities, making Warehouse Row’s office space among the best in the city.

Gallery 1401As Gallery 1401 enters its fourteenth year, owner-curator Sue Markley makes the move from Williams Street on Chattanooga’s southside to Warehouse Row.

Homespun Parties + Events

After fourteen years, Sue Mark-ley’s Gallery 1401 has become

something of an institution on Chattanooga’s southside. Sue says none of that will change with the 2-block move to Warehouse Row. “I’m really excited about the direc-tion Warehouse Row is taking,” says Markley. “For me, the move is a wonderful opportunity to intro-duce my artists to a new clientele, while remaining accessible to my existing collectors.” Gallery 1401 represents more than 25 artists from all over the world, working in styles ranging from contemporary, to classical, to three-dimensional work. Currently in progress, the new gallery (pictured far right) will soon be hanging work by artists like Carylon Killebrew (top right), Elizabeth Rogers Decosimo (mid-dle), Daud Akhriev (bottom right) and many others, as well as the occasional antique or handmade accessory. Find more information at gallery1401.com.

The event planning business friends Ayesha Reynolds and Kelly Brown began as a simple “Homespun” endeavor has evolved into something

much bigger. Last year, they added a brick and mortar space at Warehouse Row, and this March, they moved upstairs to a new second floor space in the North Building. Be sure to stop by their new digs to check out their store design, which includes free wi-fi and a photo booth. They’ve also increased their DIY schedule, adding weekly classes, and more great events like last March’s indie wedding extravaganza, “This Ain’t Your Mama’s Wedding,” showcasing wedding goods and services from the DIY and indie community. The Book of Loving KindnessAnyone who has ever sniffled their way through

a Story Corps interview on NPR, or kept a box of tissues handy during an airing of the movie Pay

It Forward, will really appreciate the conversation bookmaker and artist Nora Bernhardt has started by creating The Book of Loving Kindness. A 400-page, handmade leather volume, The Book of Loving Kindness invites you to document an act of kindness you’ve received, witnessed, or offered. The book will be circulating through school, libraries, and public spaces throughout 2012. Paste photos, scribble words, or sketch drawings into its blank pages to leave your impression of a kindness rendered or received.

Each page, as well as the book’s journey, will be photographed and documented, and the results posted to bookoflovingkindness.com and facebook.com/bookoflovingkindness. Current stories of kindness include a photograph of the words “you are beautiful” inscribed in chalk on a cobbled walkway, and a child’s drawing depicting how she emptied the dishwasher for her Mom. The Book of Loving Kindness is on display at Warehouse Row April 7-14.

Bourbon is very trendy these days. Normally, I sniff at trendy things; I prefer styles with

substance and staying power. Happily, in the case of bourbon, “trendy” is also enduring. Bourbon has a rich American history; it was invented in the late 1700’s by a Baptist preacher named Elijah Craig. Craig built his distillery in Fayette County, VA, which later became Bourbon County, KY after Kentucky broke off from Virginia in 1792. Craig’s barrels were stamped with the county name, and his whiskey soon became synonymous with “Bourbon.” All Bourbon is whiskey, but not all whiskey is bourbon. To qualify as a bourbon, a whiskey must be made from at least 51% corn grain. My favorite bourbon (currently) is an ultra-small batch, 14-year-old variety called Black Maple Hill. I like to sip it straight, preferably while conversing with fellow bourbon lovers like Ryan McLaughlin, bartender at Abattoir in Atlanta, GA and Harper McClure, chef de cuisine at The Federalist in the Madison Hotel, Washington, D.C. Though I prefer my bourbon straight, it’s also fantastic in cocktails. Ryan from Abattoir recommends a brew he invented called “To All a Good Night,” which mixes bourbon with repasado tequila!

History of BourbonMan-about-town George Krauth dishes on the fashions, flavors, designs, and décor he discovers as he travels the globe tracking trends as Creative Manager for Jamestown Properties.

Ask Harper McClune at The Federalist in D.C. to recommend his favorite bourbon!
