INTRODUCTIONThis list is not a definitive list of information and should only be seen as a start to the history of War Memorials in Aberdeen City.

It should also be noted that some of these War Memorials may not be readily accessible to the public without permission of the building owner or landowner. Also some sites may not be suitable for access by people with mobility difficulties.

Some of the War Memorials are listed or are part of buildings that are listed, such as churches so are protected from unauthorised works by law.

War Memorials are defined as plaques, gardens or parks dedicated to individuals who were killed in conflict or on active service.

Where a person is recorded on a gravestone but their body is not present then that addition is seen as a War Memorial. None of these are in the following list.

Many statues and plaques are created to record an individual and their life. Often these will make reference to military service or participation in conflict. A Memorial to an individual who served in conflicts, but which listed other achievements and accomplishments over a life-time would not be recognised as a War Memorial as it was erected primarily to commemorate the individual. An example is the McGrigor Memorial in the Duthie Park.

There is a related booklet concerning Memorials in Aberdeen City that is also available.
