We need your help!
Volunteers
As our community grows, so does our membership and opportunities for involvement. Volunteers are needed at Seasons Thrift Shop, delivering Meals-On-Wheels, calling BINGO! and helping in the dining room. If you would like to explore your creative side, we could use your help with greeting card recy-cling workshops every Wednesday morning.
Donations At the Rainbow Senior Center, we have several pro-grams that really depend on donations from the com-munity. Our Gift Shop at the Center, Seasons Thrift Store, and the Home Health Closet all rely on your support. We sell lightly used clothing, jewelry, acces-sories, household and decorating items in the Gift Shop and at Seasons. The money we raise comes back into the programs we offer at the Center. The Home Health Closet is always looking for walkers with seats, wheelchairs and shower chairs to lend out to those in need in the community.
Please call Christina Avena at 830-249-2114 to discuss donations and volunteer opportunities!

Protecting your nest egg With the economy the way it is today, many people have seen a serious decline in the value of their retirement plans. As a result, millions may never get the opportunity to re-tire — or will have to cut back on their qual-ity of life when they do. This presentation will include showing proven, dependable ways to protect the sav-ings you have, as well as ways to prepare a steady supply of cash that you can use to sup-plement your retirement income.

Thanks to the Associates of Audiology, we had another grand evening of dancing to the music of Dave Laughlin Band on the 13th o March. Town and Country Manor treated us to a St. Patrick’s Day Party with lunch and entertainment by Conrad Gonzalez. Tunes that have mellowed us through the ages, he, like the Pied Piper of lore, Mr. Gon-zalez sang and strummed his guitar while we applauded and danced to his music forgiving his lack of green attire. I wonder if Mr. Gonzalez got pinched. Wacky “Sport Dress” Wednesday came off being not very sporty. Amazing, since our Spurs are in first place in the NBA. The 82 game season ends April 16 — then the Playoffs begin. Go Spurs! We are also in the midst of the NCAA March Madness playoffs. Warren Buffet offered one billion dol-lars to anyone that correctly guesses the winners of all the games. All those guessing lost before half the games had been played. So Mr. Buffet got to keep his billion dollars. Haul out the glue gun and start designing those Easter Bonnets for our annual Easter Parade Party. Last year the competition was stiff with Adah and Robert Short taking “The All-Around Best” prize. Get silly, prissy or classy, but let’s get busy creating those bonnets. Party time in South Texas begins April 10th as Fiesta San Antonio kicks off with the first week of Car-nival which runs throughout the festivities. The Coronation Ball is next, then “Taste of Old San Antonio” opens; then comes the River Parade with “The Most Interesting Man in the World” as Grand Marshall. The Battle of the Flowers is on the 25th. Fiesta San Antonio wraps up on April 27th. Ker—Wack! That’s the sound of breaking the cluster of cue balls for a game of pool in the Confer-ence Room. One pool hustler in our midst is a short, grey-haired lady who sports dark shades and uses two white canes. “Shark,” AKA Betty Neal has won four our of six games, losing only to entice; or maybe, the op-ponents’ shots are the poorest of poor. By the way, shooting pool is free—no quarters are necessary—nor are conferences. With the onset of warmer weather, the walking trail is very inviting: 5 laps equals 1.06 miles. Per-haps a trip around the trail before lunch and another trip after lunch would be good for starters. The gazebo area is inviting with a few benches so as to spend some time reading the names on the paving bricks. The bricks somehow have a warm calming affect exuding feelings of contentment. On my last visit to this site I noticed a few newly names bricks. A very pleasant trip and only a few steps away. -Snoop

Come hear some tips to help identify and address spousal caregiver burnout.

Have you ever pondered the domino theory or ripple effect whereby one act or event happened, simi-lar acts or events will follow? So it did occur, right here at K-Place! Yes, and all over a game of partnered dominos. This male and female pair became quite accomplished in understand-ing each others moves; so much so, they began spend-ing more time together outside the realm of dominoes. In a very short period of time, they decided to become partners in life. So three years ago, during the first week of April, this couple took their marriage vows in the then, newly built gazebo on the K-Place grounds. (I believe this is the only marriage that has taken place at the gazebo.) If the domino theory truly abounds, then even more so to “beware the Ides of March” and playing dominoes consistently with the same partner. This young at heart bride and groom is: M_______ and D_______ B_______. -Snoop Mystery Couple: ______________________________ Your Name: ___________________________________ Date and Time: _______________________________ *First person to guess correctly wins a free lunch* The last Who ‘Dat was Dave and Mary Novak. Fight BAC! - Chill
According to both the US Food & Drug Admin and the US Dept of Agriculture, refrigeration at 40◦ F or below is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk of foodborne ill-ness. Microorganisms grow more rapidly at warmer tem-peratures, and research shows that keeping a constant refrigerator temperature of 40◦ F or below helps slow growth of these harmful microbes.
The Cool Rules
• Cool Tool Use a refrigerator thermometer. Temperature should be consistently 40◦ F or below. • Chill Factor Refrigerate or freeze foods within two (2) hours of purchase or use • Thaw Law Never defrost food at room temperature - don’t sit food out on the counter or in sink to thaw. Al-ways thaw food in the refrigerator. For a quick thaw, sub-merge in cold water in an airtight package or thaw in the microwave if you will be cooking it immediately. • Divide & Conquer Separate large amounts of leftovers into small, shallow containers for quicker cooling in the refrigerator. • Avoid the Pack Attack Do not over-stuff the refrigera-tor. Cold air must circulate! • Rotate Before It’s Too Late Use or discard chilled foods as recommended in the USDA Cold Storage Chart at http://www.foodsafety.gov/~fsg/f01chart.html
