At times like this it's hard to understand why this part of the world was ever settled! But then I think about how lucky I am not only to have a house with a good furnace, but to have a job that I can do from home. I started working from home in 1990, long before it became fashionable. Had I not been laid off and about to marry a professor with a sabbatical year coming up, I might still be on the treadmill now. What about you? Do you work for yourself or for somebody else? Are you happy with where you are now? If not, what's holding you back from making a change? I'd love to know. Send me an e-mail. I just read an article written for insurance companies about what they need to do to improve their customer service. The article totally missed what I think is the main reason so many people hate insurance companies: They make it impossible to know what you've really bought! Years ago, when I worked for a bank, we ran a marketing campaign in which we gave away stuffed animals if you made a deposit of a certain amount and kept it in the account for at least three months. The campaign was unbelievably popular, but we did have several unhappy customers who hadn't read the fine print about needing to keep the money in the account for three months. The second year we ran the campaign, I had enough clout that I was able to over-rule the bank lawyers. I wrote plain, simple English rules. understand them. They were in a big enough type size that they were easy toread. Know what happened? We got even more deposits, and NOBODY tried tobreak the rules! Yet so many companies, especially financial institutions and cell phonecompanies, still try to trick us with legalese and fine print. And then theywonder why people hate them, and pressure legislators to pass laws limitingwhat they can do. I just came across another example of this game last week, with a bank creditcard offer.
