In Memoriam Walter Drost-Hansen (1925–2012) Professor emeritus W. ‘‘Drost’’ Drost-Hansen was born on Sep- tember 29, 1925 and died July 1, 2012. He graduated from Gentofte Statsskole (1944) and later took the Magister Konference in Chem- istry at the University of Copenhagen (1950). During his graduate work he spent 4 years of study at the Niels Bohr Institute. He held various research positions, worked in the petroleum industry and was on the faculty of the University of Miami until his retirement in 1998. Drost published over 100 papers, book chapters and reports, including the introduction of the far-reaching concept of ‘‘vicinal water’’ [long-range water structure modifications induced by prox- imity to solid surfaces and large macromolecules in aqueous solu- tions] and the concept of Thermal Transition Temperatures sometimes called ‘‘thermal anomalies.’’ The scientific community will miss his creative and novel contributions to these and related areas.
