According to the National Association of College Admission Counselors, the most important thing the prospective collegestudentcandoinhighschoolistomakedecisionswhichmaximizefuturepossibilities.Withthatgoalinmind,studentsmustchallengethemselvesacademicallyandpersonally. Thesechallengesmustnotbeequatedsolelywithachievinghighgrades.Students should experience subjects in-depthby selecting awell-rounded curriculum that includes advanced courses in allacademicareasofstudy. Each student is advised to use this information to create aschedulewell suitedtopersonal interestsandplans forcollege. Aboveall, studentsmustprepare fora future that involveschange. A program balanced with a variety of academic pursuits should assist students in preparing for the unknowndemandsofthefuture.Optioningandschedulingrequirethoughtfuldecisions. II. ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSFORCOLLEGEACCEPTANCE

Whenstudents areplanning their freshmancoursesandhigh school program, theyshouldbeawareof theadmissions andscholarship criteria employed by colleges. Thoughtful planning will enable students to present colleges with a positiveportrayalofthemselves.

The most challenging job for college admissions committees is selecting a well-balanced class for each school year.Admissionsofficersviewthehighschooltranscriptascrucial, becauseitdocumentsastudent’sacademicprogressthroughouthigh school. Colleges prefer consistently high academic achievement or an improvement in grades throughout one’s highschoolcareer.Admissionsofficersnotonlyexamineastudent’sgradepointaverage, but alsopayparticularattentiontothespecific courses selected by the candidate. Another related indicator of student success is class rank. Some colleges anduniversitiesmandatethatcandidatesrankinthetoptenorfifteenpercentoftheirclass.ManycollegesareflexibleinjudgingtheclassrankofastudentfromacompetitiveschoollikeWalnutHills,since97%ofthestudentsattendcollegeimmediatelyupongraduationfromhighschool.

Scores obtained on college-entrance examinations are additional indicators of potential success inhigher education. Sincemanycollegesrequirecertainminimumscoresforadmission, studentsshouldtaketheseexamsandtakethemseriously. In addition to the academic profile of a student, colleges express interest in a student’s activities, volunteer communityinvolvement and/orworkexperience. Participation in anactivity for several consecutiveyears often indicates an in-depthcommitment toaprogramandmaybeviewedmorepositively thanengaging inmanyactivitiesovershortperiodsof time.Admissionofficershighlyregardcontinuityofactivities.
