But even in earliercenturies artists used this method. Giulio CesareBedeschini (1583-1625) was a master of cut andpaste. He edited his drawings by cutting out seg-ments and repasting them, or by pasting newdesigns on to his old compositions.

28 June to 5 October 2014Unbeugsam und ungebändigt:(Intractable and untamed)Documentary photography around 1979 In times of major social upheaval photographybecomes an important medium. As a representa-tion of reality it has a direct effect which RolandBarthes, the theoretician of photography, in“Camera Lucida” published in 1979 described as“untamed”. The exhibition brings together photoseries by fifteen photographers and artists.

28 June to 5 October 2014Das Museum der Fotografie: Eine Revision(The Museum of Photography: A Revision)For decades a phantom – a museum for photo -graphy - has haunted art supplements and paneldiscussions. “We need one”, say the advocates.“Really?” opponents reply. The collector ErichStenger (1878-1958) regarded photography asproducts of a technology, never as an art form.Nevertheless, his vision was a presentation inthe form of a museum. At an early stage heargued for a museum of photography for whichhe collected systematically and drew up adetailed plan of how it should be arranged. Today his collection is part of the PhotographicCollection of Museum Ludwig – that is, of amuseum of art.

Inspired bythe aesthetics of do-it-yourself and by the historyof art and architecture, his constructions arelocated between sculpture and architecture. Theyare created in outdoor or indoor spaces and areat first sight both bulky and useless. Many, how-ever, can be played on, can be given a differentfunction and thus used. Oscar Tuazon (born 1975 in USA) is interested increative processes. He regards collective manualwork, endeavour and communication as part ofhis work. The project at Museum Ludwig occupiestwo floors of the large staircase where the visitorencounters disparate architectural elements of aprivate house.

until 30 March 2014Alfred Seiland – Imperium RomanumPhotographic exhibition Alfred Seiland is among the leading contempo-rary photographers. In his complex works he dis-tils moments of perfect composition and usescolour in a painterly fashion. The epic photogra-phy of this master of large-format techniqueoccasionally makes people smile, more oftenthan not, however, it causes dismay becauseagain and again it is a testimony to the destruc-tion of our ancient heritage by human beings.

27 June to 19 October 201414 AD – Römische Herrschaft am Rhein(Roman rule on the Rhine)The cataclysmic defeat of the military comman-der Varus in the Teutoburger Wald hills in 9 AD isconsidered one of the biggest catastrophes in thehistory of the Roman Empire. Yet, EmperorAugustus did not abandon his plans to establishRoman rule in the parts of Germania east of theRhine. He sent Germanicus, his great-nephew,across the Rhine with reinforced troops. Theiroffensives were planned and commanded fromCologne. The death of Augustus in 14 AD – 2000years ago – saw a turning point in Rome’s policyvis-à-vis Germania. Under Augustus’ adoptiveson and successor Tiberius, troops along theRhine front threatened Rome with open rebellion.Germanicus’ loyalty towards Tiberius, who washis adoptive father and Roman Emperor, averteda military insurgence. This exhibition shows civiland military life in Cologne and neighbouring settlements and military camps during the earlyimperial period. Recent archaeological finds fromCologne raise many new questions regarding lifein this early imperial city. The finds testify to thedynamic development of Cologne as a regionalpower centre on the fringes of the RomanEmpire.

17 May to 7 September 2014Von Istanbul bis Yokohama (From Istanbul to Yokohama - The Camera Meets Asia 1839-1900)On the occasion of its 100th anniversary theMuseum of East Asian Art presents 350 rare historical photographs by European and localphotographers which bring alive the travel routesof globetrotters to Asia. After the opening of theSuez Canal in 1869 commercial photographic studios took up business in the big port cities. They catered for the demand for travel photos by tourists and globetrotters who captured theirmemories of sights and people of exotic countriesand cultures. The main routes led from Istanbulon the Bosporus via Alexandria, Port Said, Aden,Bombay, Colombo, Madras, Calcutta, Singaporeand Hong Kong as far east as Yokohama. Themuseum will present for the first time this choiceselection from its collection of historical photo -graphs. The founders of the museum, AdolfFischer (1856-1914) and Frieda Fischer-Wierus -zowski (1874-1945) compiled this collection ofphotos on their journeys to East Asia undertakento acquire objects. The picturesque beauty of theimages bear testimony to the high artistic qualityof the early pioneers of photography, but they arealso a poignant reminder of the irretrievable lossof ancient cultures with a long tradition.

The exhibition also highlightswhat the epithet of “servants of the people”meant for those who were not regarded asbelonging to the “Volksgemeinschaft” (the “peo-ple’s community”) – for those, police stood forsurveillance, exclusion, prosecution and extermi-nation. Visitors are encouraged to explore andtake a closer look at documents, regulations andedicts from the NS period. On the occasion of this anniversary, thisexhibition will put Cologne Cathedral at the centreof the veneration of the Magi in Europe. At twovenues within the Cathedral – the Hubertuskapelleand the Domschatzkammer (treasury) – the cult ofthe Magi will be examined from the points of viewof history and art. Forthis occasion, the back of the Baroque mausoleumof the Magi will return to the Cathedral. In addition,a selection of works from the Magi collection ofthe Dombauarchiv (archives of the Cathedralworkshop) will illustrate the unbroken popularity ofthe Magi and the associated traditions surroundingtheir veneration. The shrine of the Magi will be at the centre of theexhibition in the treasury. Alongside the trape-zoidal lid there will be outstanding 12th and 13thcentury gold works from the Rhine-Meuse areawhich are closely connected stylistically to theshrine of the Magi and its creator, Nicolas deVerdun.

4 May to 15 June 2014Nähe und Distanz (Intimacy and distance)The graphic artist Ottilie Ehlers-Kollwitz

The landscapes by Ottilie Ehlers-Kollwitz (1900-1963) are characterised by an inner feeling fornature, which in the combination of observationand sensibility acquires a song-like quality and bya masterly command of the graphic artist’s craft. Her sensitive illustrations of children’s books andthe etchings for “Grimms Märchen” (fairytales)designed together with Hans Baluschek are todayantiquarian rarities. The exhibition presents woodcuts, linocuts, colourmonotypes and illustrations for children’s books bythe daughter-in-law of Käthe Kollwitz. For the firsttime the accompanying publication by the Nicolai-Verlag introduces the life, work and writings of thisunjustly forgotten Berlin artist.

The classicalperiod of dance from 1713 to 1913)An exhibition by the Deutsches TanzarchivKöln/SK Stiftung Kultur at the TanzmuseumWhen in 1713 the French king and enthusiasticdancer, Louis XIV, founded the École de Danseat the Paris Opera House shortly before hisdeath, no-one thought that the monarch knownas the ‘Sun King’ had laid the foundation stonefor one of the most prestigious training establish-ments for both male and female dancers. ‘Thediscipline of the body and movement’ which wastaught there ushered in the development of clas-sical-academic dance, which was to achieveundreamt-of popularity in the romantic ballet ofthe 19th century. This exhibition traces the origin

and development of classical ballet in these 200years, takes up the theme of the ‘intoxication ofthe senses’ evoked by this art form and its pro-tagonists, the idolised star ballerinas, anddescribes the turning-point – the ‘demystificationof this world’ - marked by the performances ofthe ‘Ballets Russes’ and the premiere of thepiece “Le Sacre du Printemps” in Paris in theyear 1913.
