About the WHS Publ icat ion

Ephraim Ki l lam’s 1887 His tory o f the His tory o f the Wal lenpaupack Set t lement

By Kr i s t en Brown

provided Wayne County His tor ica l Society wi th the WHS publ icat ion 1887 His t o r y o f t h e S e t t l emen t Upon th e Wal l enpaupack by Ephraim Ki l lam for inc lus ion wi th in the His t o r y o f Wayne Coun ty in 100 Ob j e c t s exhibi t . Area hi s tor ica l soc ie t ies wi l l be contr ibut ing i tems f rom their co l lec t ions, and indiv idual members o f a h i s tor ica l soc ie ty are a l so welcome to contr ibute i tems of the ir own hi s tor ica l ar t i fact s. The exhibi t wi l l be on di sp lay for two year s, unt i l 2019. I f any WHS members would l ike to loan Wayne County His tor ica l Society a h i s tor ica l i tem for the durat ion of th i s exhibi t , p lease contact the WCHS Execut ive Director, Carol Dunn, at (570) 253-3240 or emai l [email protected] . The i tems wi l l be kept in locked g lass cabinets whi le on di sp lay through 2019. I tems should be de l ivered to WCHS by March 1 , 2017.

The 1887 His t o r y o f t h e S e t t l emen t Upon th e Wal l enpaupack was wr i t ten in 1887 by Ephriam Ki l lam, a d irect descendent o f Aust in Ki l lam. Aust in Ki l lam arr ived in the Massachuset t s Bay Colony in 1637 and set t led in Salem, Massachuset t s. The Ki l lam fami ly descendants, l ike many other s o f the Bay Colony, cont inued to move west through Massachuset t s and Connect icut as the generat ions required far m land for the ir subs i s tence and l ive l ihoods. In 1774 a g roup of 33 fami l ies inc luding the Ki l lam descendants, p lus a school teacher for the chi ldren, p ioneered westward f rom Canterbury, Connect icut , across the Hudson and Delaware River s, to the Wal lenpaupack Val ley. The Connect icut Colony’s or ig inal land g rant , the Charter o f 1662 i s sued by King Charles I I , descr ibes Connect icut ’s wes ter n border as extending to the ‘Souther n Sea’ or the Paci f ic Ocean. Kil lam’s 1887 His t o r y notes the many s trugg les and successes that the se t t ler s encountered and achieved, inc luding deta i led descr ipt ion of ar med sk ir mishes wi th the nat ive Americans, and the ongoing d i sputed land c la ims between the co lonies o f, and later the newly for med s tates o f, Connect icut and Pennsy lvania . Pennsy lvania was es tabl i shed in 1681 when Wil l iam Penn rece ived a royal charter f rom King Charles I I , as sumedly as a reward for Penn’s support o f the res torat ion of the Eng l i sh Monarchy in 1660. As King George III had s ided in favor o f the co lony of Connect icut in 1771 regarding the land di spute between Connect icut and Pennsy lvania , the d i spute was not reso lved unt i l 1782 when the Cont inenta l Congress overtur ned the King’s ru l ing and upheld Pennsy lvania ’s c la im to the Wyoming and Wal lenpaupack Val leys. Ephraim Ki l lam’s 1887 His t o r y i s important to the Wal lenpaupack community because i t remains the only wr i t ten hi s tory wr i t ten by a descendant o f the or ig ina l Wal lenpaupack (Cont inued)
