The Curriculum Committee met on November 30 and again on December 13 to develop the program for the 2013 Spring session of WALLA classes, starting on March 18, 2013. WALLA & Friends of Library Spring Film Series

All movies described are presented jointly by WALLA and the West Lafayette Public Library, located across the street from the Morton Center. Enjoy some popcorn while viewing the movies in the Walnut Room, upstairs on the second floor in the WLPL. March In the award-winning documentary The Invisible War, director Kirby Dick investigates one of the United States’ best-kept and most shameful secrets: the rape of soldiers by soldiers within the U.S. military, and the shortcomings of the military justice system that allowed this crime epidemic to continue. In honor of Women’s History Month WALLA will show The Invisible War (Not rated, 93 minutes, 2012) on Monday, March 11, at 6:45 pm. April When Juliette (Patricia Clarkson) arrives in Egypt, she learns her husband has been delayed by work. After his friend Tareq (Alexander Siddig) offers to be her guide, she sees Cairo in a way that most tourists will never know. WALLA will present Cairo Time (PG, 90 minutes, 2009) on Monday, April 8, at 6:45 pm. May News producer Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) has been given the opportunity of a lifetime—a job as the executive producer of a major network morning news show. There’s just one problem: the show is an unmitigated disaster. Will the addition of veteran news anchor Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) help Becky turn Daybreak around, or will his disdain for morning news be the end of Day-break? Morning Glory (PG-13, 107 minutes, 2010) will be shown by WALLA on Monday, May 13, at 6:45 pm. We have been having record attendance at the movie showings. Please join us. Don’t let us have all of the fun!

Our WALLA Family is Missing One of Its Own

Our hearts are saddened by the death of Randy Nelson on February 12. Randy and his wife Denise have been dear friends to many WALLA members.

Randy was a past president of WALLA, as well as a board member; he was a member of and chaired many committees. He served WALLA

wherever he was needed. Our hearts go out to his family. Randy will certainly be missed by each of us.

Mark your calendar for the Saturday, May 18, event. WALLA has reserved

a number of seats on the main floor of the Long Center for the concert “The Lights of Broadway” by the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and the Civic Theater of Greater Lafayette. Maestro Nicholas Palmer with the LSO and the Civic Theater vocalists will entertain us with classics such as “Sweeny Todd,” “The Producers,” “West Side Story,” “Seasons of Love,” “South Pacific,” “Les Misérables,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” and more. The complete program and a reservation form appear on the enclosed flyer.

The concert starts at 7:30 pm. The price for the tickets is $24.75 per person. WALLA also has reserved dinner space at Sylvia’s Brick Oven starting at 5:15 to 5:30 pm. The optional dinner is self-pay. Reservations with prepayment for tickets will be due by April 15. For further questions, please contact Jack Delleur at (765) 497-4316. Every year the Purdue University Retiree Association (PURA), in cooperation with WALLA, organizes the “Purposeful Living in Retirement” conference. This year it will be on Wednesday, April 24, at the Four Points by Sheraton at 1600 Cumberland Avenue, West Lafayette, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. The program includes five presentations, a luncheon, exhibits from wellness, health-related and senior organizations and door prizes. Registration and a fee of $10 are required, call (765) 494-0900 to enroll by phone with the use of a credit card by April 16. The fee includes lunch and conference materials. The titles of the presentations are as follows: Enhancing Your Lifestyle Through Emerging Hearing Aid Technology, by Mary Caccavo, Audiologist, Improving Balance and Mobility in Later Life, by Professor Jeff Haddad, Is Having a Will Enough? Looking beyond a Will, by Brenda Clapper, attorney, Another Dose of Medication, by Dr. Michael Murray, and Other Musings, by John Norberg, author. If you need further info, let Jack Delleur know; he will try to have brochures available during classes. You may also contact Jack by calling him at (765) 497-4316.

Just When You Thought You Knew It All

Women blink nearly twice as much as men. There are more chickens than people in the world. Rubber bands last longer when refrigerated. Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite. Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors. If the population of China walked past you, eight abreast, the line would never end! (Because of the rate of reproduction!) In the last 4,000 years no new animals have been do-mesticated.

Babies are born without kneecaps; they show up somewhere about 2 to 6 years of age. February,1865, is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon. An ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain. Our eyes are always the same size from birth on. Our nose and ears never stop growing. A gold fish has a memory of three seconds. Well, who knew?!? Now you know a little more than you did before.

WALLA Volunteers Wanted and Needed

Our WALLA organization works best when many participants see needs, make useful suggestions, and espe-cially lend a hand. The success of our WALLA programs depends on office workers, newsletter writers, course coordinators, preparers of daily beverages, servers for luncheons, audio-visual technicians, and vigilant board members. Consider how you can add to our growing list of able and enthusiastic volunteers. Consider adding your name to our “Help Wanted and Needed” sheet at your earliest opportunity.

For more information you

may go to the WALLA office

in room 209 of the Morton

Center. Also call Russ Clark at 765-447-1042 or email him at

WALLA Boards the Virtual Train

Seventy-two members of WALLA boarded the virtual train on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Nancy Hartman presented a slide show and talk about the train trip she and her husband took last April and May. They boarded the Hoosier State in Lafayette (assisted by our own Joe Krause); caught the California Zephyr to Emeryville, California; visited San Francisco and environs; rolled along to Seattle on the Coast Starlight. They traveled to Chicago on the Empire Builder and then back to Lafayette on the Hoosier State. On the way they took ferries, visited vineyards and museums, ate good food, and enjoyed seeing family. The WALLA members who attended enjoyed a lunch of Asian inspired food from Noodles & Company and Maru Sushi. The Alaskan roll sushi had salmon rather than tuna inside. (Nancy had a slight mental hiccup when making the food signs.) We also enjoyed the wine tasting provided by the local Wildcat Creek Winery, which included their award-winning Traminette white wine and their Prophet’s Rock Red among the six wines they brought. Thanks to Rick Black and his team. Thanks also to WALLA president Russ Clark for arranging the tasting. At the end of the program, Joe Krause answered questions about the fate of the Hoosier State’s daily schedule between Indianapolis and Chicago. Amtrak plans to stop daily service in the fall unless we can get support from the Indiana Department of Transportation. If you believe this transportation option is important to our community, then ask Joe about how you can show your support.

Eighty-eight WALLA participants gathered at McCormick’s Creek State Park Canyon Inn on February 6, 7, and 8. The weather was great, the food good, the movies exciting and/or funny, and the camaraderie was outstanding. The staff at the Inn treats the WALLA group so well – from the expedited check-in to their waving good-bye en masse as the buses pull away. They could not have been more cordial. Registration for the event nearly doubled this year, requiring nearly all of the rooms available at the hotel. Two buses were full, plus several guests decided to drive their own cars. Blythe Lee’s film selection and expertise in discussing the movies (Gary Cooper favorites this time) were a major contribution to success, but a great deal of the credit must go to the friendly and easy going atmosphere generated by those 88 people who registered. Coordinator of the event, Gail Beck, wants to thank everyone for their good nature and their willingness to reach out to new faces. Thanks also to Jack Delleur for furnishing treats for everyone on the first viewing night, honoring those with February birthdays. Mark your calendars, the arrangements have already been made for our next state park getaway on February 5-7, 2014. The larger movie viewing room is reserved, and Blythe is considering movie options. This trip is a wonderful way to get to know your fellow ‘lifetime learners’ in a relaxed environment.

7TH Annual WALLA Winter Get Away Tops Attendance Record

Jim Carter’s excellent photography skills (and his sure-footedness)

captured the beautiful falls at McCormick’s Creek.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You are on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are

the one who'll decide where to go...” from Dr. Seuss

McCormick’s Creek - Sights Worth Seeing

Pat Carr and Jim Carter enjoyed the beautiful sights that only McCormick’s

Creek has to offer.

Russ and Kathy Clark seemed to enjoy the solitude offered during our get away.

Barbara Powell and Cathy Potter shared a walk in the woods, over bridges, on and off the paths.

A photographer has to find the perfect subject. This is beautiful!
