Principal's Report
Hard to believe that 2018 is already a month old. We truly had a great winter, just not sure if it is over or if more is to come. Our First Semester was a great one. We have seen a lot of great improvement in all grades. Students are working hard and it shows! The boys 5/6th grade basketball teams finished their seasons and had a great year. All teams showed great improvement from the beginning to the end of the season. Girls' basketball is underway and our first game is quickly approaching. The girls have been practicing hard every day. On Saturday, January 13th we hosted our first Robotics competition. Mrs. Nusbaum and Mrs. Crone did a fantastic job organizing this event. We had 23 teams compete. This was a great day and even finished about an hour early! On Thursday, January 11th, Mrs. Weiss and her Title One ladies hosted the Title One Parent Night. The theme for this was "Dino Night” There were 130 parents and students who attended this wonderful event. On January 22, 24, 30 and February 1, teachers in grades 10-3 were treated to a Virtual Author (AJ Cosmo) visit. This was organized by Mrs. Amy Weiss through a grant she received from the John Glenn Education Foundation (JGEF). This is the time of year when it is very important for all students to be present. The state tests are quickly approaching and teachers/students are reviewing and practicing for these tests. Please talk with your children about these tests. Research tells us that when parents discuss and
question their children about school, grades improve in all areas. Tim Davis

FEBRUARY - 2018
MESSAGE FROM YOUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR
With the Holidays behind us, we at WES are focused on a time of learning, but this can be a difficult time of year to engage students with the snow, cold and dark. Everyone is working hard as we hope for warmer brighter days. Hope and perseverance are two very important factors for student success. With everything there is a season, and one way we try to help students stay focused on the goal of learning during these dark days is to keep things positive and exciting to encourage learning. Our Title 1 staff under the direction of Mrs. Weiss do a wonderful job with family nights and the school and classrooms offer wonderful ways of keeping our students motivated. No matter how hard we try to make things positive, there still comes a time that perseverance is needed. Another term for this is grit. That ability to push forward even when things are most difficult. Life is full of struggles and challenges and our children need that inner drive, that grit to handle the tough times. This character trait can be fostered in our children. The Parent Toolkit website suggest that we encourage our children to try new things and to encourage our children to reach for goals outside of their comfort zones. We need to talk with our children about struggle and possible failure and provide support during these times with encouragement and recognition of their efforts and hard work. This focus on hard work and effort, or grit, is also known as a growth mindset, something our 3rd graders have been working on under the direction of Mrs. Morris.
As your school counselor I am always available to assist students in any areas of struggles they may be going through at home or at school. So far this year I have been making classroom visits presenting lessons on respect and responsibility. In the coming days I will be meeting with 4th graders using the Keep a Clear Mind program. This is a nationally recognized drug education take home program for students and parents to work on together. I will also be meeting with 6th grade classrooms using the Real Character Real People program to address character traits such as citizenship, honesty, and yes perseverance.
Under Core Beliefs in the Walkerton Elementary 2017-18 hand book a goal is stated to provide activities and programs which will support all students’ ability to learn skills transferable to life. One of those skills is identified as perseverance - to continue in spite of difficulties. Here at WES, staff strive to meet this goal each day.
Sincerely,
Rich Stauffer Elementary School Counselor

Dino Night was a Roaring Success! Thank you to the families who joined up on January 9 for our
Dino Family Night. The students
did a beautiful job with the make

models, and doing the Dino Move
and Groove! The real mastodon
bones were amazing! The dino
fossil casts turned out fantastic.
The cookies and cocoa were
yummo, and the smiles said it all
on the free dino rides! Special
thanks to our VOLUNTEERS--our
amazing staff! Here are a few
pics, and there are many more on
the WES facebook page. :)

From The John Glenn Transportation Department
Dear Parents and Students:
Just a reminder that students are expected to be at their bus
stops and ready to board their buses 3 to 5 minutes before the
designated arrival time of their bus. A bus can run a little early
due to detours or students not riding. Sometimes the bus is a
little behind due to unexpected delays such as road conditions,
detours, train delays etc. Encouraging the student to be at
their stop 3 to 5 minutes before their designated time helps to
keep the whole route operating efficiently and to get all
students to school on time.
During extreme weather conditions, drivers understand and
expect that students may need to wait inside until they see
their bus approaching the stop. During those days, please ask
your student to watch for the bus and to get to their bus stop
as quick as possible. Making the bus wait makes everyone late.
Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation.
Please join us on Saturday, February 17, 2018 as the John Glenn Education
Foundation will host our first annual fundraising gala. The Exceeding in
Excellence Gala will take place at the Swan Lake Resort.
The evening will be filled with a plated dinner, dancing, live performances by
our show choirs and jazz band, and a silent auction featuring many of our local
businesses. Tickets to the Gala will be available for purchase at all home
JGHS Boys’ and Girls’ Varsity Basketball games beginning in January, as
well as at the administration office on John Glenn Drive.
Tickets prices are $75 per couple or $40 for a single ticket.
This event will raise funds that will enable our Foundation to
provide innovative opportunities in education for students and
staff within our district. For more information, or to get
involved, please email us at [email protected].
Reference the Gala in the subject line and a board member will
reach out to you.

GOOD JOB TO ALL!
KEEP WORKING
HARD!
Important Attendance Update We at WES want to make sure our students are successful. For us to accomplish this, student attendance must continue to be a priority. Although teachers are one of the most important school- related factors in a students success, they cannot impact or provide learning opportunities when your child is absent. Of course, there will be times when students must miss school, but our goal is to make sure students are only absent when necessary. Just remember, if your child is going to be absent, always call the school so we know that your child is safe.
Did You Know? Being frequently absent early in a child's school career not only shows
lower achievement in math, reading, and general knowledge, it is also a common statistic of high school dropouts. The bar graph below shows the percentage of attendance for each grade since the beginning of this
school year, our goal is to make sure every grade level is above 96% at the end of the
year. We are on our way to reaching our goal!
Fortnight-a period of two weeks.
