SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA The Story of an Angie’s Shelter Resident My name is Tracy B. and I am a recovering alcoholic and addict. I have had periods of so- briety and have been through inpatient alcohol and drug rehabs through the years. What brought me to Angie’s Shelter for Women was seven months ago was I was homeless, was arrested and spent 2 ½ months in jail. I remember the staff at New Horizons shelter was very helpful to me. I eventually met Doreen Brown, the manager at Angie’s Shelter. I was there about a week, but I was off and on still doing drugs. The guilt was getting to me so told the staff and I was discharged. After less than a week I had had enough. I walked back to New Horizons and Doreen Brown had agreed to meet with me. I told her I had not been drinking and I was willing to stop drugs. She thanked me for my honesty and said that my bed was still there and she was going to give me a second chance because I was being totally honest. I moved back into Angie’s Shelter in July. I started volunteering at the NH Food Bank and am now one of the students in the Culinary Job Trainee Program there. I applied for housing through Families in Transition and just found out they have an apartment for me, so I could be moving out of Angie’s soon. Today I walk with my head held high and with more confidence and assurance. My sobriety comes first because without it I would definitely not be where I am today. I am so forever grateful to New Horizons and Angie’s Shelter for Women. To all the staff and especially to Doreen Brown, the program manager, who has helped me so much with her guidance, being there to listen and for giving this recovering alcoholic and addict a second chance! --Tracy B. current Angie’s Shelter resident January, 2013-- WINTER 2013 SAVE THE DATE! froM tHe eXecutiVe directorThe winter of 2013 has already proven to be quite challenging to all of us. We have encountered bitter cold, high winds and the most significant snowstorm since the Blizzard of ‘78.

This is New Hampshire and we do expect winter to offer us various challenges from time to time but just imagine for a moment that you don’t have a warm home to go to each night or a hot meal, or for that matter, any food at all.

Every night nearly 100 people in our community face this reality. Because of your support, New Horizons for New Hampshire provides food and shelter to those in need. I, for one, have been quite blessed and have always taken for granted that I have a place to go each night to sleep and food on the table but for many, the place they look to in a time of need is New Horizons.

This winter we have seen a record number of people seeking shelter and to meet this need we have arranged for an overflow shelter which can accommodate an additional twenty five adults. This has resulted in an additional operating expense to our organization. A portion of that expense has been covered by the Kevin Scott Dalrymple Foundation however, due to the recent severe weather, we are faced with additional unexpected costs. In order to offset these expenses we have launched our “Fight the Freeze” campaign which you can read about in this newsletter. I hope you will consider supporting this emergency fund-raising initiative so that we can continue our mission to provide food and shelter to those in need.
