Welcome...

Key Levels

There are exciting times ahead. The economy is resurgent and the jobs market is opening up for those with the right combination of skills, experience and qualifications.

Business start-ups are also on the rise. There have never been as many small businesses as there are today in sectors as diverse as professional services, such as accountancy, through to construction, and retail opportunities like floristry.

Companies have also realised that having professional, qualified staff gives them the edge in a competitive marketplace. They appreciate and recognise individuals who’ve invested in their own personal development and are rewarding such individuals with promotion and attractive salaries.

Legislation is also meaning that in booming sectors such as health and social care, the only way to gain employment is to get qualified.

There’s also good news on fees. The Government’s initiative on 24 plus Advanced Learning Loans means that for many courses, funding is available up front for the course, and the loan only gets paid back once you’re earning over £21k and have completed your course. If you fund an Access to Higher Education course in this way, and go on to complete an eligible higher education course, the loan will be written off.

For many people, this has become an attractive way of investing in their future. There’s more information available on page 14.

So have a look through the guide and decide your own future. It’s in your hands!

In many subjects Wakefield College offers courses at various levels,

dependent on the degree of difficulty of the course, e.g. a Level 1

course is generally for someone seeking a first qualification in a

subject and a level 5 course is a foundation degree qualification.

Wakefield College’s Access to Higher Education courses

are highly successful, nationally recognised kite-marked

courses preparing adults wishing to progress to university.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma can be a one-

year route to university for people without the traditional

qualifications needed to apply for university. Like A Levels,

they are a full Level 3 qualification.

Access to Higher Education courses are delivered by

colleges in England and Wales, and are available in a range

of different subjects, such as art, social work, computing,

science, healthcare, law, primary teaching and business.

Access to Higher Education courses are popular with

people pursuing new careers or changes in their lives.

Do universities recognise the Access to HE Diploma?

The College has close links with local universities that

welcome students from the Access to Higher Education

courses. Students are guided through their university

applications and supported in their applications for relevant

work experience.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma is regulated by

QAA and widely recognised by UK universities, and many

actively encourage applications from Access to Higher

Education students.

Most Access to Higher Education courses can be

completed in one year. However, you can also study part-

time over two or more years, or through distance learning

or evening sessions.

All Access to Higher Education courses can be financed

through the Government’s 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

(see page 14 for more information).

For students who go on to complete an eligible course at

university, the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan is written off

and does not need to be paid back.

Counselling Health Care Social Care

Courses Counselling and Health & Social Care

Are you interested in improving people’s lives or caring for those who may be ill, elderly, or vulnerable? The health & social care sector employs four million people in the UK. England’s health care spend has more than doubled since 2000, meaning more staff with relevant skills and qualifications are needed to support and care for our growing, and ageing population.

Counselling and Health & Social Care

Like to give something back to the community?Health care is the prevention and treatment of ill health and

medical conditions in hospitals, health centres and in the

community. Social care is the care and support of vulnerable

people, usually in the community but also in some settings.

For many people, working in these sectors is a vocation and the

reward is the knowledge that you are doing a valuable job and

giving something back to society.

The average starting salary for a care worker in Yorkshire is

£14,000 but, if you’re ambitious and keen to progress, you can

boost your earnings and rise through the ranks if you have the

relevant qualifications. Many of our students choose our Access

to HE route as a way into nursing.

If you take out a 24+ loan for one of our qualifications, you

would only start to pay it back once you were earning £21,000

or more and we can continue to support your professional

development right through to degree level.

Brush up those skillsThe industry has difficulty recruiting high-calibre staff, and

there are great opportunities for beauty therapists, nail

technicians, hairstylists and barbers.

There is also a growing demand for people to specialise in

men’s grooming and increasingly more men are turning to

hairdressing as a career.

Having the right qualifications could give you not only the

opportunity to work in your own district, but it also opens up

career options further afield, such as working on cruise ships

for example.

There are also exciting franchise opportunities in retail settings

around the country.

Hair Beauty

Hair & BeautyLooking and feeling good is big business. Nearly a quarter of a million people work in the UK hairdressing and beauty industry, which accounts for nearly 1% of the UK economy. Both the hairdressing and beauty sectors have grown considerably in recent years, with continued growth predicted in our area.

the right skills.

If you’re already working in engineering or construction, or are

Since 1st August 2013, any UK resident aged 24 or over who

enrols with us onto an eligible level 3 or higher course, can

apply for a Government funded loan to pay for the tuition fee.

This will be paid directly to the College on your behalf

via the Student Loans Company. 24+ Advanced Learning

Loans enable thousands of people to benefit from life

changing opportunities. Evidence shows that people with

qualifications at higher levels have significant advantages

in the job market.

This is great news for you as it means that you don’t have

to pay anything when you enrol.

Look for the icon within this guide to see eligible

courses, or call Course Information on 01924 789111 to

check the course you’re interested in is included.

Repayments don’t start until April 2016.

You only pay back your loan (plus interest) when you finish your

course and earn more than £21,000 a year. Your repayments

will stop if your income drops below £21,000 a year.

Your annual repayment amount will be 9% of any income

you earn over £21,000.

If you are enrolling on one of our Access to Higher

Education programmes and then progress to a Higher

Education (HE) course at any UK college or university, the

further education part of the loan will be written off when

you complete your HE course!

There’s more information and an application form on the

government website - www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loan

Fee icons are for guidance only and are usually
