award on July 20, 2019.The award was presented atBharatiya Vidya Bhavan toVidwan Dr. SubbarayaRamachandra Bhat, noted

Jyothy Charitable Trust, Dr. P. V. Narayan, noted Kannada scholar and writer, and Dr. T. S. Ramesh,former Principal and HOD of the Sanskrit Department of Poornaprajna Evening College.

Befittingly, the students ofMallikarjuna Veda-SanskritPatashala gave the programmea flying start as they chanted theVedas with much enthusiasmand precision. It was a treat forthe ears and there was completesilence as the young boysenthralled the audience with theirchanting for nearly 30 minutes,their voices in complete unison.
Shri Sreedhara Murthy,Co-ordinator, MadhyamaBharathi, spoke on the occasion,saying that BharatiyaVidyaBhavan and Jyothy CharitableTrust had been presenting theVyasajyothi award on GuruPoornima day. While JyothiCharitable Trust has beencontinuing with the legacy sincethe beginning, completing
17 years of the award,Bharathiya Vidya Bhavanbecame a part of it since 2014.The award is presented to ascholar very well versed in VedaShastra. Also, an upanyasa hasbeen held for the past 17 years.
The event was begun inmemory of Jyothy, the daughterof Dr. BNV Subrahmanya,who passed away at a veryyoung age.
The members on the daisthen partook in the ceremoniallighting of the lamp.

Headded that this year, the awardwould be bestowed on VidwanDr. Subbaraya RamachandraBhat, noted Sanskrit scholar.Also welcoming the audience,he specially commended thestudents of MallikarjunaVeda-Sanskrit Patashalafor their impressive chantingof the Vedas.

saying that the MallikarjunaVeda-Sanskrit Patashala wasstarted in 1985 in the nameof his father, Mallikarjuna Shastry.
The Vyasajyothi awardwas started in 2002, he added, tofelicitate great scholars dedicatedto the Vedas.
The Vyasajyothy awardwas ceremonially bestowedon Vidwan Dr. SubbarayaRamachandra Bhat, notedSanskrit scholar, byDr. P V Narayan, notedKannada scholar and writer.
The awardee, Dr. SubbarayaRamachandra Bhat, thankedJyothy Charitable Trust andBharatiya Vidya Bhavan forgiving him the award, whileadding that he was not surehe was worthy of it.
To commemorate GuruPoornima, Dr. T. S. Ramesh,
H. O. D. of Sanskritdepartment at PoornaprajnaCollege, Udupi, delivered aspecial lecture on “Guru Poornimaand Guruvina Mahatva.”Dr. Ramesh elaborated on thegreatness of Vyasa and thenexplained that Indian culture helda guru or teacher in high regard,and Guru Poornima Day gaveall an opportunity to think of theirteachers and gurus and thankthem.
He said a guru expelsignorance and bestowsknowledge on his shishyas.He also quoted poet Kalidasa,writer George Bernard Shaw,Sarvagna and Sant Kabir amongothers on their definitions of ateacher. He concluded that witha Guru backing you and anaim ahead of you, one cannotbut be successful in one’sendeavours.

and Infosys Foundation havebeen jointly presenting thecultural outreach programmein 11 states of India since June2015. Year after year, a reviewmeeting is conducted tostrengthen the project and also tobuild mutual cooperation andunderstanding among all memberKendras.
This year, the review meetingwas held at Trichy on July 13,2019, under the chairmanship ofSri.S. Gopalakrishnan, Chairman,BVB, Hyderabad Kendra.

charmed by the riot of coloursthat hit you when you entered theRangoli Metro Art Centre, if youhad visited the centre on 19, 20and 21 July. Small wonder,because the walls had beencovered with paintings bychildren whose imagination andabandon had taken flight.
These are paintings that werethe outpouring of the artistic talentof 195 children from twoorganisations, Balya and AaspadaArt Workshops. CalledSamanvaya Sootra, the paintingswere the products of workshopsconducted and curated byYugashri S. A., artist and art

facilitator. Balya is a Free Homefor Children by the AnnapoornaCharitable Trust, while Aaspadais Yugashri’s own art workshopsinitiative.
The programme was theresult of the Cultural OutreachProgramme by Bharatiya VidyaBhavan, Bangalore, and InfosysFoundation. It was held on 19,20 and 21 of July, 2019.
Yugashri is an alumna ofChitra Kala Parishat where shedid her Master’s and has beenimmersed in research and arteducation for the past 21 years.She has been working with Balyaas an honorary teacher for thepast 5 years. She also conducts

art orientation programmes forteachers and parents at schools.Thus, at the Rangoli Metro ArtCentre, you would haveprobably seen some art byparents and teachers, too, alongwith art by 190 students fromBalya and 5 students fromAaspada. The children were toldthey could draw whatever theyliked and the results on the wallsshowed that their imagination hadtruly taken wing.
Apart from regular sheets ofpaper, the children had also usedvisiting cards to paint on, thushelping the environment in theprocess. They have also beenallowed to experiment with other
sizes of papers to use as theircanvas. In fact, during one of herother projects with Balya,Yugashri’s students have usedold notebooks which had beenwritten on. The pages of thenotebooks were all stucklengthwise and breadthwise tomake long scrolls and thenpainted on. “Some of them were30 feet long and 4-5 feet wide,”she says.
Yugashri has been concernedwith art education in India, andwonders that not many schoolboards have an art curriculum inplace. She has travelled toBhopal, Baroda, Haryana andMumbai and worked in schoolsin her research endeavours.

A musical programme,Pehchan, was presented byall visually impaired artistes andphysically challenged artistes.

The programme concept wasselected purely to bring physicallychallenged talented artistes intothe mainstream and also givethem social recognition. Theaudience not only appreciated theprogramme but connectedemotionally with this group oftalented artistes.
The programme was wellcoordinated by a 23-year-oldstudent of Blind School Academywho himself is partially visuallyimpaired and physicallychallenged.
Folk fusion was presentedon 01/06/2019 by Shri. Arif Mir& troupe. The programme waspurely designed to provideinformation and recognise theancient art of singing traditionalsongs.

The anchoring of theprogramme was very informative;so the audience could learn of theheritage and tradition of the state.

Harshdeepsinha Jadeja.The play is a satire on deathfeasts still prevalent in rural India.The play highlights the dark sideof those who are not believers.
The play depicts a familywhich is in a cycle of debt, andrumour mongering villagers withexaggerated stories of seeing aghost.
It used unconventional sets,comprising of three similarlooking platforms, used toestablish different places withwhite sheets used as a backdrop,which are also used as a screenfor some shadow play techniquejuxtaposed with red and bluelight, making it a spectacle.
The play was directed byHarshdeepsinha Jadeja, a youngstudent of Drama and Theatre.
Sangeetotsav waspresented on 25/06/2019 byDr.Nirmaldan Gadhvi. Dayrois a folk art which describesstories from the rich traditionsof the state.
It presents the true senseof the lifestyle, relations andpopular characters of history.

This was presented in theform of a social satire: whenpeople are alive, nobody isbothered, but when they die,everyone starts showingsympathy.
The play was performed byteenage students who displayedrealistic acting.
The 2nd play Supandi is alight comedy inspired by thecharacter Supandi from themagazine, Tinkle. The purpose ofcreating this play is to increase thehabit of reading.

Mohan se Mohan is anOdissi dance drama.
It described the story of twogenerations. The most popularpersonalities over generationsare Lord Krishna and MahatmaGandhiji. Their lives, deeds,struggle, message, courage,thoughts, speech, behaviour,their divinity were thoroughlycompared and presented in adance form. Two symboliccharacters, Chakra and Charkhadepicted these two characters.The play co-ordinated beautifullybetween the different artpresentations and the dancersperformed gracefully to the song
written by Gujarati poet, TusharShukla.

An innovative puppet showwas performed on 08/04/2019by Mrs.Chaitali MajgaonkarBhandari depicting stringpuppets, hand puppet, mascot,ventriloquism, doll and voice act.She was assisted by her fatherShri Surendra Majgaonkar andmother Mrs.Supriya Majgaonkar.

renowned beauty spot and ShaktiPeetha.
The story is about a minorgirl called Kalijai of Chilika Coastwho married a minor boy ofParikuda Gada. While ferrying toher mother-in-law’s house byboat along with her familymembers, the boat capsized onthe Chilika due to sudden heavyrains and a storm. Except forKalijai, all others were saved.
Thereafter, people saidthat a girl clad in a white sareewandered every evening aroundthe accident spot crying profuselyand searching for someone.To pay homage to Kalijai’ssoul, a temple was built.
