Smithfield Horse Fair
By Tony Kiernan
Smithfield Horse Fair was hijacked by D.C.C. (Dublin City
Council) afterthe shooting at the March Fair.
The social welfare started looking for
horses’ passports and chips and if a
person hadn’t got them their horse
was taken, which was an attack on
horse owners in Dublin and now
people are afraid to bring horses to
theFair.
The June Fair only had two horses
and about fifty Garda to keep control
- a joke: that taxpayer’s money is
wasted on such a Fair. Why doesn’t
D.C.C. move the Fair to the big field
in Finglas South? Or the Morning
Star Avenue field is big enough?
There are lots of places where the
Fair could be held. DCC are wasting
taxpayers money arguing about the
Fair when they could come to an
agreement where to hold it, as they
know it won’t be stopped.
There should be stables built for
people in Finglas to stop horses being
pounded, and a lot of the youth would
be saved from the scourge of drug
and alcohol addiction and this could.
save a lot of money in the future
The council don’t want horses, but
the people in Finglas do, and the
horse people are not giving up! Next
week we hope to have most of the
horses from Finglas and a lot of
other places in the Horse Fair and get
it back off the ground. When you
bring a horse in, the Social Welfare
want peoples R.S.I numbers, so if
you have a horse your labour gets
stopped.
How much more do horse owners
have to take? If D.C.C keep ignoring
horse owners we will have to drive
all the horses and some people on
horseback to the Dáil five days a
week and maybe it will get
something moving forward with
D.C.C
A lot of people bought apartments in
Smithfield, knowing about the horse
fair but after they bought the
apartments they started complaining
when they had knowingly received
tax breaks for buying in the
Smithfield area and accepting the
nature of what takes place in the
cobblestone traditional market
square. I have included a few photos
to let people see how well looked
after our horses are.

Superbikes
By Mark Kearns
Motorbike racing is the most
dangerous thing you can do! Bikes
can go up 200mph.
The Isle of Man road racing is so
mad, sidecar racing in particular!
You must be off your head to get up
to speeds of 180ph! You are four
inches off the ground and the side
rider has to lean from side to side at
these speeds
The main rider has very little
steering, it’s the side man jumping
from side to side which controls the
steering and the balance of the
machine.
Spectators are in danger of
bikes crashing into them,
unlike track racing which is so
different.
Each rider has to be very fit to
push their bodies at such high
speeds.

My Link with Manchester United
By Declan O’Farrell
My name is Declan O’Farrell. I am a
Liverpool supporter, but I really
should have followed Manchester
United, because of my great-uncle
Frank O’Farrell. I’m going to tell you
a bit about Frank.
Frank O’Farrell was the first and only
Irish man to manage Manchester
United. His football career started
with Cork United after which he was
signed on to play for West Ham
United in January 1948. He retired as
a player in 1961 due to injury.
Following this he managed Torquay
United, Leicester City and finally
Manchester United, where he followed
in the footsteps of Matt Busby in
1971. A quietly spoken man, but
nonetheless a determined and talented
wing half, O’Farrell was to become a
well respected student of the game.
From Cork United he followed his
teammate Tommy Moroney to West
Ham United in January 1948. Frank
made his league debut in November
1950 in a 4-1 defeat away to Notts
County and remained a regular in the
side for six seasons.
During that time Frank O’Farrell won
the first of nine full international caps
for Ireland against Austria in Vienna
on 7th
of May 1952, in a 6-0 defeat. In
November 1956, he left The Hammers
for Preston North End in a straight
swap deal involving Eddie Lewis.
He was still with the Lancashire Club
when they finished runners up to
Wolverhampton Wanderers in
Division 1 at the end of the
1957-58 season.
Frank retired as a player in 1961 due to
injury and in May 1961 became
player-manager at Weymouth. In May
1965 he became manager of Torquay
United, replacing Eric Webber.
He took The Gulls to promotion in his
first season in charge and followed this
with 6th
& 7th
place finishes in Division
3 in the following two seasons. While
Torquay Manager he returned to West
Ham United to sign three players, John
Bond, Ken Brown, and Bill Kitchener.
In December 1968 he took over
Leicester City narrowly winning a vote
between himself and then Luton Town
Manager Allan Brown for the post.
Brown was sacked for showing an
interest in the post and subsequently
replaced O’Farrell at Torquay.
Although Leicester were relegated
from the first division at the end of the
season, O’Farrell lead them to the F
Cup final, which they lost 1-0 to
Manchester City at Wembley.
Frank in his West Ham Utd days
9
In June 1971, after leading Leicester
to promotion and the second division
title, he took over at Manchester
United, but would only last 18 months
in the post.
His arrival came just two years after
retirement of manager Matt Busby
and three years after United had won
the uropean Cup, but the side’s
fortunes had taken a sharp decline
under the management of Wilf
McGuiness. The soft spoken Irishman
was never able to get to grips with the
worst of George Bests excesses.
O’Farrell started his first season in
charge very well, and was 10 points
clear at one stage at the top. However
form plummeted and O’Farrell’s
impersonal approach, whereby every
player had to schedule an
appointment just to see him, didn’t
help morale. A poor start the
following season culminated in a 5-0
thrashing at a Don Rogers inspired
Crystal Palace which ultimately
sealed his fate. In December 1972,
O’Farrell was sacked with three and a
half years left on his contract. He was
replaced at old Trafford by Tommy
Docherty.
He became manager of Cardiff City
in November 1973, but in April
1974 quit to take the managers post
with the Iranian national team and
lead them to the 1976 Asian Cup
He became manager of Cardiff City
in November 1973, but in April
1974 quit to take the managers post
with the Iranian national team and
lead them to the 1976 Asian Cup
In November 1976 he returned to
Torquay United as Manager,
moving to a position as General
Manager when Mike Green was
appointed as Manager in March
1977.
He became Torquay Manager again
in June 1981, once again becoming
General Manager, this time in June
1982 on the appointment of Bruce
Ricoh. He worked as General
Manager until 1983, when he
retired from football and continued
living in Torquay.
In January 006 O’Farrell was
invited for an expenses paid visit to
Iran to attend a ceremony in honour
of Persepolis F.C. former players,
along with Alan Rogers, working
in Iran.

A Day In The Life John Lennon
By Thomas Callaghan
The Beatles were one of the first bands
to write their own songs. Till then
most bands copied the likes of Buddy
Holly or Elvis Presley.
John Lennon was always the out-
spoken Beatle. During the Royal
Variety Performance, Lennon jokingly
said to the audience “The people in the
cheaper seats clap your hands, the rest
just rattle your jewellery”!
The audiences roared with laughter!
Never before had the royals and upper
class been slagged off. That was
typical of Lennon. He got in to world
wide trouble again when he told an
American reporter that the Beatles
were more famous than Jesus Christ.
John Lennon was the founder member
of the most influential rock group of all time:
The Beatles, along with Paul McCartney,
George Harrison and Ringo Starr.
There was uproar in America,
especially in the ‘bible belt’, Lennon
made an apology, but that didn’t stop
the American youths burning Beatles
albums.
After the Beatles broke up many
years later, John moved to America
full time and had a successful solo
career. John loved the freedom of
New York.
He could go out for the morning
papers and coffee. John Lennon was
shot dead outside the Dakota
apartments where he lived with wife
Yoko Ono and their son Sean. John
left a brilliant legacy of music with
the Beatles, and his solo career.
He will never be forgotten as long as
music is played and listened to.

Boxing feature
By Jason Groves
Former Three-Time World Champion
Humberto “Zorrita” Soto will seek to
join rare company among active
fighters with 60 wins as he pursues his
60th professional victory when he
faces the always-dangerous and hard-
hitting Lucas Matthysse in a battle of
world-ranked super lightweights in the
co-featured fight on SHOWTIME
CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on
Saturday, June 23.
Soto (59-7- , 34 KO’s), of Los
Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, will battle
Matthysse for the vacant WBC
Continental Americas super
lightweight title and look to extend his
current 15-fight winning streak. He’ll
also look to push himself higher in the
world ratings where he is already rated
number two by the World Boxing
Council (WBC), number three by the
World Boxing Association (WBA)
and number seven by the World
Boxing Organization (WBO).
Matthysse (30- , 8 KO’s), whose
concussive power led him to scored
nine knockdowns in a fight against
former World Champion DeMarcus
Corley, has won his last two fights and
will be -
making his fifth start in the United
States on Saturday night.
Matthysse’s only losses came via
controversial split decisions to
former World Champions
Devon Alexander and Zab Judah in
a pair of fights that many ringside
observers felt Matthysse won. A
native of Trelew, Argentina,
Matthysse is rated number four in
the world by the WBC, number six
by the WBA and number eleven by
the WBO.
Soto and Matthysse’s -round
fight will immediately precede what
should be an exciting 12-round
main event between former World
Champion, Kansas native Victor
Ortiz (29-3- , KO’s) who now
resides in Ventura, Calif., and
contender Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17
KO’s) of iverside, Calif.
If triumphant, Soto at 32 years old,
will join a handful of active fighters
with 60 or more wins, including
James Toney, Jorge Arce, Jose Luis
Castillo, Luis amon“Yori Boy”
Campos and Pongsaklek
Wonjongkam.“Winning 60 fights
would be great, but winning another
world title is what I really want,’’
said Soto who turned professional at
17 years old in September of 1997.
14
“I’ve always worked very hard in
training trying to learn different
things. I’ve always been very
dedicated in the gym. Matthysse is a
great fighter with a very respectful
power punch. I’m going to fight a
very intelligent fight. I’m going to
follow my corner’s directions and go
in there and outbox him and be the
smarter fighter.”
A terrific counter-puncher with good
overall skills and movement, the
crowd-pleasing 5-foot-7 ½-inch Soto
has fought excellent opposition
throughout his career, including
former World Champions David
Diaz, Jesus Chavez, Joan Guzman,
Jorge Solis and Kevin Kelley.
Soto captured the WBC super
featherweight title in December 2008
and the WBC Lightweight World
crown in March 2010. He made three
successful defences of the 130-
pound belt and successfully retained
the 135-pound crown on four
occasions.
One of his most memorable title
defences came in a close, unanimous
12-round decision win over the brave
and determined Urbano Antillon in a
spectacular, fast-paced, give-and-
take slugfest on Dec. 4, 2010 in
naheim, Calif. “I thought I won
more clearly than the judges had it
(115-112, 114-113 twice), but
without a doubt it was the toughest
fight of my career,’’ Soto said.
“There were a lot of rough tactics
from him (Antillon threw Soto to the
canvas three times), but I expected
that which is why I never became
frustrated by it.”
Four of Soto’s defeats and both of
his draws came during his first
three years as a professional. Soto’s
last loss came via a controversial
fourth-round disqualification in
June 2008. He is coming off of a
unanimous 10-round decision over
Claudinei Lacerda last April 7 in
Cancun, Mexico.
Matthysse, a solid amateur before
turning professional in June 2004,
will look to turn what Soto hopes
will be a boxing match into a brawl.
The Argentine, who is well known
for his thudding power, would be
undefeated if only he’d received the
benefit of the doubt in two very
controversial and questionable
points losses to
Judah and Alexander (in which he
knocked both of them down) in
what amounted to home games for
them.

The younger brother of retired former
welterweight world title challenger
Walter Matthysse, Lucas is coming
off of two knockout wins in his native
Argentina. In his lone outing this
year, he scored a dominant sixth-
round technical knockout win over
Angel Martinez on Feb. 10. Prior to
that, on Dec. 9 the 5-foot-9, 29-year-
old knocked out Sergio Priotti in the
fourth round.
Before that, Matthysse fought three
left-handed former world champions
in a row – Judah on Nov. 6, 2010,
Corley on Jan. 21, 2011 and
Alexander on June 25, 2011.A two-
fisted slugger who tends to start
slowly,
Matthysse spotted Alexander an
early lead but rallied to drop him with
a right hand in the fourth.
He rocked Alexander in the seventh,
eighth and tenth rounds, but it wasn’t
enough as he lost by one point on one
of the scorecards (95-94), by three on
another (96-93) while winning by
three (96-93) on the third card.
“I was robbed,’’ he said. “I gave
it my all and it was a tough fight,
but I thought I won. He’s lucky
he won the fight.”The aggressive-
minded Matthysse obliterated
Corley in a fight in Argentina,
flooring him twice in the fifth
round, once in the sixth, three
times in the seventh and three
times in the eighth. The referee
finally halted the slaughter at 2:00

Pensioners Protest outside the Dáil
The State of the Nation
By Peter Curtis
Did the government think the change
of the Irish punt to the euro, which
happened in 1999, would help this
country, and be the answer to our
problems?
Did the government not invest in any
long-term commitments?
Did they know what would happen
when they opened the labour market to
allow workers from all member states
to work here?
Did the government not foresee or
even look forward to the future of this
country?
In my opinion, the government is
responsible for the actions which have
placed the country in this position,
which have not helped at
all. This has resulted in a lack of jobs
and as a result an increase in crime due
to tax increases and an increase in the
cost of living.
The change in the labour market
means there are very few jobs for Irish
workers and I think that the
government should look after their
own people before anyone else.
The younger generations have very
few options now, emigrate and hope
everything goes well or stay in Ireland
to do courses and again hope there are
jobs out there that will suit them to
make a good life for them. Then we
have that percentage that will turn to
crime. I have dabbled in this research
but I know in my heart this will get
worse (see statistics below).
TAXES ON PRIVATE PENSION
In my opinion the taxes on Private
Pension is a DISGRACE.
Why should a person that worked HARD
all their life and already went through a
recession in their lifetime, who may have
had a very
large family, continue paying
Taxes?
The private pension should be left alone
and off limits to taxation. I wonder what
sort of government could impose this
atrocity and what future austerity plans
they have in mind.
Celtic Tiger While I was researching the taxes on the
pension I came across something that
caught my eye the Celtic tiger. The Celtic
Tiger started in 1995 until 2008 when the
recession began. What I can’t understand
is that the government had ten very
profitable years so my question is what
happened to the money, how is it that
within four years the country is so bad. I
have a few ideas what happen, did the
government think that the Celtic tiger
would last forever.
