About this Series:

Man the hatches! Hoist the sail! Pull up the anchor, but don’t do it alone. Sailing a ship takes an entire

crew. Each person has their own role, from the captain to the cook. In our own lives, the roles may be

different, but the problems are the same. With friends for our crew, parents as our captains, and even an

occasional storm, how can we manage the rough seas of relationships?

Lesson 1: Choosing Your Crew

King Rehoboam had only been king of Israel a short time, but he already had a big choice to make. The

royal advisers encouraged him to give everyone a break from work for a while. His group of childhood

friends said to work the people even harder than before. Rehoboam’s choice of friends shaped his legacy

as king. How are your friends shaping you?

Lesson 2: Rough Seas

Relationships are rarely easy. When a person or a group of people is against us, it can feel like we are

sailing in a vicious storm. How can we keep going through the rough seas of bullying, teasing, and lost

friendships? Jonah knew what that felt like, but when God asked him to stand up to people he didn’t like,

it was in a way Jonah never expected. God didn’t tell Jonah to fight back or get even. Instead, he told

Jonah to help the people he disliked.

Lesson 3: Captain’s Orders

No ship can be without a captain. The same is true in life. Everywhere you go, there’s a teacher, a leader,

a parent, telling you what to do. It’s not always fun, but those relationships are some of the most

important ones in our lives. It’s extra hard when that leader isn’t someone you like. For years, David had

to follow a mean and unlikable leader, even though David was destined to be king! The way he treated

King Saul is a great example of how respect makes our relationships better.

Lesson 4: Ahoy!

Many relationships today are built on words. You might text, talk, message, call, or snap what you want

to say, but all of those things are ways to communicate. This week we’ll ask “What am I

communicating?” How do the words you choose affect your relationships? A man named Paul knew the

power of words. He used words to encourage people, solve problems, and help others in amazing ways.

Lesson 5: Damage Control

Many relationships end up broken. Some sink slowly, but others are wrecked in a storm of mean words

and anger. Jacob and Esau had a stormy past. They were brothers, but hadn’t seen each other in twenty

years! Lies, fighting, and stealing had broken them apart, but there was still one thing that could repair

their wrecked relationship: forgiveness.

Lesson 6: Rescue

There is a lot we can do to make our relationships better. Even so, there is one relationship we are in that

we can’t repair. All of us are sinking in sin, we’ve broken our relationship with God, and there is nothing

we can do to change that. We need to be rescued. God sent Jesus, not only to show us how to be free from

sin, but to show us that God loves us. Following Jesus will guide us to the most important relationship of

all: our friendship with God.

Welcome 1:00

Welcome, everyone! My name is ______. I’m so excited to be here with all of you! It’s a

brand new year here in Elevate, and there are so many awesome things going on. Today

we’ll get to sing, hear an incredible story, have some team games, and answer a big question

about how we can be a good friend to someone else.

As you came in, you should have gotten an arm band with your team’s color on it! Your

group leader and the rest of your teammates have that color, too. If you look on stage here,

each of your teams has a point tracker! You can earn points for your team by completing

some challenges here in Elevate, which can get you some points, but the best way to earn

points is by inviting someone new to come with you to church! For each person you bring

that hasn’t been to Elevate before, your team will get a point ball. Oh, and you and your

friend get to choose a prize, no matter which week they come on! If you brought a friend

this week, don’t forget to get your prizes afterward. If you bring a friend on the last sixth

week of this series, you and your friend will get an extra-awesome prize, so try especially

hard to bring someone to that week!

So, you can earn prizes by inviting, but there one more thing. If we get enough new people

to come during this series, our kids pastor will do something crazy awesome! Let’s see what

it is!

Question of the Day 2:00

Part of what makes teams so amazing is becoming better friends with your teammates. One

of the best ways to make our relationships stronger is to ask questions! Get ready for our

question of the day.

Who is someone from history that you would really like to talk to? It could be an inventor,

an artist, a king, or anyone else that has lived before us. Think about it, then turn to

someone else, and listen to their answer. Tell them yours as well! Do This: Emcee as the kids are sharing their answers. Encourage them to share with the people

around them, and encourage any kid whose story you hear.

Know This: It’s more important that the kids interact with each other than with you. Allow them

time enough to share with each other, and don’t have them share with the whole group.

Good job! There are so many amazing people that have lived throughout history. I think

there are some more incredible people right here in this room!

We’re going to ask an important question about how we treat other people in a few minutes,

but first, let’s do something fun! This activity is for your whole group team. We’re going to

be playing a game of giant foosball! We’ve got a few giant foosballs up here, and some

smaller ones. Your group leaders are going to put your team flag behind one of the lines on

the floor. That flag marks where the goal is. Your group must kick or push the balls toward

the other teams’ goals, but make sure to protect your own goal! The catch is, your whole

team must stand on the two lines in front of your flag. You can’t step off of it at all! It’s like

the foosball games we have here, where all of the players are stuck on a pole. Alright, your

group leaders are claiming your team’s goal! Look for the flag that matches your arm band

to find out where to go. Do This: Direct kids to their group areas. Each group can find one another by looking at the color

of their arm band, and matching it to the flag or leader’s arm band. Help leaders get kids onto the

two lines in front of their flag, then throw the giant inflatable balls into the middle and get the game

started! You can have a leader in the middle to make sure the balls get across the gap. Use a mixture

of giant inflatable balls and small soft soccer balls at the same time to make the game fast-paced

and interesting.

Know This: Before the lesson starts, put two lines of masking tape on the floor where you would

like each team to stand, and outline a good sized “goal” for each team. Adapt this to your

environment, but try to make sure each team has a clear line of sight to each other team’s flag. A

diagram has been provided to show what this ought to look like. If you have three teams, make a

triangle. If you have only 4th and 5th graders, you may want to make this look more like an actual

foosball field. To do this, tape four parallel lines on the floor, and have the fifth graders on lines 1

and 3, while fourth grade is on lines 2 and 4. (A diagram of this format is provided as well.)

Know This: You may want to have the front and back lines of each team switch halfway through

the game. This will change things up, and also give everyone a chance to participate.

Great job everyone! It’s tough to work together sometimes, but that’s what it means to be a

part of a team. You can come back to the middle and stay standing, because next we are

going to sing and worship God!

God made us to have relationships. When he created people, he knew that having friends

and family would be super important to us. That’s why friends and family are important for

us to talk about in church, because having good relationships is part of the way God made

us to live! I’m thankful that God created us that way. One of the best ways to show how

thankful we are to God is to sing about him! Let’s stand and sing this new song “Heartbeat”

together!

Praising God with you is incredible. We can praise God in a lot of ways, like singing, doing

the things he says are right, and learning about him in the Bible. We can also just talk to

him, anytime and anywhere. We call that praying. No matter when or where, God always

listens to your prayers. Let’s talk to him now.

God, you are super amazing. You made all of us, and you teach us so much about loving

and helping others. Thank you for giving us our friends and families. Amen.

Last week, we met up with the Light Force team for the first time. They are an awesome

group of heroes who use their powers to defend the virtual world of the Nexus from their

base in a lighthouse. Let’s see what they are up to today.

It can be really tough to work with someone you don’t like. How can Network and Prism

work that out, I wonder?

I think we might be able to help them with that problem. You see, this series is called

“Voyagers,” and it’s all about relationships. On a sea voyage, the crew that you travel with

is really important. The same thing is true in life. Your crew, your family, teachers, leaders,

and friends, are extremely important. They help you find your way when you are lost,

celebrate with you when important things happen, and stick by you when things get rough.

Sometimes, though, we get into relationships with people that we don’t think are awesome.

They might be mean people, unpopular people, or just someone we don’t know very well.

How do we treat people we don’t like? That’s a big question. You’ll need to work with your

whole team to answer it. Let’s see what answers you can find!

Group Time 15:00 Do This: Make sure each kid finds their group. Help group leaders if there is a need. Encourage

kids as they work to answer the question.

Know This: Kids will be discussing how to treat others they may not like. This is a time for them

to search for answers, and see how they can use the Bible to investigate and better understand life.

This time is designed for kids to interact and deepen their understanding. They won’t get all the

answers, but allow them to question and discover as much as possible.

Do This: Give the groups a warning before the time ends. About one minute before time is up,

begin the bumper video. Encourage them to sit together in their groups.

You all have some awesome ideas! Come on up to the front, but make sure you are still

sitting by your teammates, because you’re going to need them for this challenge.

Memory Verse Challenge 3:00

Each series here in Elevate, we learn a new memory verse! Each of these verses comes from

the amazing book God has given us, the Bible! For this Voyagers series, we’re learning a

verse from the book of the Bible called Philippians. This is the fourth verse in the second

chapter of that book. That’s why we call it Philippians 2:4. This verse was written by a

follower of Jesus named Paul.

None of you should look out just for your own good. You should also look out for the good

of others. A lookout is someone who stands on top of a ship, watching for danger or land.

They are responsible for the safety of everyone else on the ship. Looking out for someone’s

good is like watching for ways to help, encourage, and do nice things for others. There are

lots of people in our lives that we can help out. Sometimes, like Jonah learned, those are

people we don’t really get along with.

For this memory verse challenge, you get to come up with your own actions for this verse.

You can make them big or small, loud or quiet, but whatever actions you choose, your group

has to say the whole verse together with them at least once! You have about two minutes,

so give it a try! Know This: For the younger 1-3rd grade kids, the leader should give them actions to do, such as

None of you (cross your arms), “Should look out” (lookout pose) just for your own good (point to

self). You should also look out (lookout pose) for the good of others (point around). You should

help them walk through these actions before the service. For older 4-5th grade kids, leaders should

encourage the group to come up with actions, and quickly choose an action that the kids do for each

section of the verse. They may be hesitant at first, but allow them to come up with motions that they

think are cool, and they will get into it!

Good work! We’ll be learning this verse more over the next few weeks, so be sure to keep

thinking about it.

Now, let’s check in with the Light Force, and see how they answered that big question,

how should we treat people we don’t like?

That was a tough situation. It’s hard to have a good relationship if you are upset at

someone. Between what you talked about in group time and the Bible story of Jonah, I

think we’ve got some great tools to help us solve this problem.

This is called a “stereogram.” It’s an illusion that hides a picture inside these little pictures.

If you look at this one just right, you will see an animal. For some people, this is pretty easy.

For others, it takes a lot of work. No matter who you are, it takes practice to figure these out.

If you spend a long time looking at these pictures, understanding the tricks, and training

your mind and eyes to look at them, you will get better and better at figuring out what the

pictures are. Since I’m sure you’re wondering, I’ll tell you what this one is. It’s a… shark!

It’s ok if you can’t see it, it takes some practice.

This stereogram has a lot to do with being a good friend. Being a good friend isn’t easy.

When you don’t like someone, it’s usually because you see things differently than they do.

You might see something bad they are doing, that they think is just fine, just like some

people see the shark in this picture, where others don’t. Other people don’t think or act like

you do. It’s hard to understand why they do the things they do. If people are doing bad

things, or hurting others, it’s especially hard. Just like there are tricks to seeing that shark in

the stereogram, we can do things to help us be a good friend to someone else. There are lots

of things we can do, but I’ve got two things that I think all of us can remember.

First, we can pray for them. Tell God what you don’t like about them, but tell him good

things about them too. Ask him to help them with things they are going through.

Just like we need to practice looking at that puzzle to get it, we need to practice looking at

people. Look for what they are having trouble with, look for good things we can do for them.

This goes for anyone, people you are friends with, your family, and even people you don’t

get along with. You can look out for their good by praying for them, encouraging them, and

if you get the chance, being kind to them.

There’s another big question we have to answer. What if someone is mean to you, or even

hurts you? Does that give you a right to be unkind and mean back to them? It doesn’t. Doing

mean things is wrong, no matter what the other person has done to deserve it. Think about

how God sees that person. He loves them and cares about them. They may be having a bad

day, or may not have anyone who shows them love. When people feel hurt, they usually hurt

other people, too.

If someone has hurt you, you don’t have to spend time with them. In fact, one of the best

ways you could look out for their good is to find someone who can help them. That might

be an adult or teacher, or you and another friend could ask them to stop being mean. Helping

someone do the right thing is a great way to follow our look out for their good.

All of us have to work with people we don’t like sometimes, but God says we can do even

better. He tells us that we can look out for the good of others, even if we don’t like them

much. That’s tough, but I know you can do it!

I’m glad God gives us the greatest example of how to be a good friend. He’s the best

friend anyone could ever have! Every time we show love to someone else, or look out for

their good, we are following God’s example. You could say, God shows us who we want

to be. That’s what this song is about. Let’s stand and sing together!

I love to sing to God with all of you! I have one more thing to show you, and then we can

finish by talking to God. As you leave, make sure you grab one of these if you don’t have it

already. It’s a family connection card. Do This: Show kids the family connection card.

This can help you remember what we talked about today, and gives you the chance to show
