The WHY Behind the Design REPETITION! REPETITION! REPETITION! The first learning tar-

get incorporates a bombardment of the new sound. Students decode the words and underline the vowel team each time. Take it a step further by having students change the beginning

or ending sounds to make a new word (or adding a letter to the beginning or end).

DRILL THE SKILL

SOUND IT OUT: Do you have any students who stop sounding out words after the first letter? The next step will teach students the importance of sounding words out all the way through. CAREFUL

DECODING

CONTEXT CLUES/CLOZE SENTENCES: This section pulls double du-ty. Students read along with their teacher and must use the context clues to figure out the missing

word. The missing word will always incorporate the new phonics rule. Students must then segment the word and write letters for the sounds they hear.

SENTENCE MASTERS

WRITE A SENTENCE: The final task requires the students to connect text to the illustration provided. Whatever sen-tence you and your students decide upon, one of the words within the sentence must contain the new sound. This will require some critical thinking on their part.
