Dismas residents, and it is the foundation from which all of our subsequent
programming is built. For this reason, Dismas is more than a house. “Dismas,” as we
say, “is family.” At Dismas House, former offender residents live together with college
students. This was the vision of our founder, Father Hickey, born from an
understanding that college students and former offenders are at similar places in life
and should learn from each other.
Volunteer Opportunities:
A unique characteristic of the Dismas housing model is our nightly family-style meal, a

Purpose: Friends Life Community is a 501 (c) (3) organization that serves adults with
intellectual disabilities. Our mission is to help our Friends grow personally, develop
socially and empower them to discover their calling within the community and the
world. Together, we're moving toward a more fulfilling life for our Friends and peace
of mind for their families.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Friends Life has a variety of volunteer opportunities. Below are a list and description of our
volunteer opportunities.
Program Volunteer: Get to know our Friends while providing an extra hand in our daily
program. We provide programming Monday-Friday 8:30-5:00. You will mentor our
Friends and assist program staff in the following: art classes, music sessions, enrichment,
life-long learning opportunities and job skills.
Program Teacher: Do you have a special hobby, skill or just love to teach? Come be a
part of our community by sharing your skills and knowledge with our Friends. Like
everyone, they are always eager to learn new things and collect hobbies and skills of their
own. Don’t know what you would teach? Talk to our Program Director to plan a great
session for you and for our Friends.
Special Events Planning: Social recreations, community awareness and fundraising are
all very important parts of our organization. We need your help in planning special
events that benefit our Friends. Examples include a community yard sale to raise money
for extracurricular and overnight trips, a Sock Hop party hosted by our Friends, and our
annual Song Writer’s Night that brings donors and supporters together to raise significant
amounts of money for Friends Life.
Creative Arts and Visual Learning Techniques: Most people learn best when presented
with auditory and visual opportunities. When we teach life-long learning skills at Friends
Life, we need multiple types of visual aids that support our Friends in learning these
skills. We need your help in creating visual aids, making easy-to-read task lists for our
Friends and supporting staff with tools that will help our Friends live as independently as
possible.
Social Media/ Community Outreach: Facebook, blogging, and even Twitter have
changed marketing and community outreach for everyone, including budget-conscious
nonprofit organizations. Social media has become a very important tool for Friends Life
to educate community members on the importance of our organization and update our
supporters on program news. We need your help in updating these sites with photos, new
blog entries and updates on the program. We also need extra volunteers for community
ministry fairs so that Friends Life can expand its capacity to serve.
Team Leader: If you have drive, charisma, motivational skills and enjoy working as a
team, lead a service team. We need your skills in recruiting more volunteers (your
friends) to help plan events, plan a “work day” for the yard, organize a fundraiser in your
own community, schedule a team to alternate maintenance for the vans, the possibilities
are endless. Staff will support you with contacts, planning and organization if needed.
Technical Assistant: Technology is essential for the functioning of any good
organization and at Friends Life we have several needs to be met involving technology.
Some of the tasks include resolving problems or questions we may have with our
computer system, printers, emails, etc., training on Microsoft Suite to our staff and
helping us to stay up-to-date with our technology.
Grant Writer: The grant writer will research, prioritize, and apply for grants from a wide
variety of governmental, private, and public foundations and institutions. These grants
will allow for us to expand our program and give our Friends the opportunity to be
involved in many new and different experiences.
Fundraiser: Fundraising for Friends Life can look just about any way you want. If you
have skills in event planning then you can help to organize special events like our Song
Writer’s Night. If you are more creative and want to hold a fundraiser yourself at your
school, church or work then we would love for you to do that. Whatever you want it to
look like you can make this position your own.
Administrative Assistant: Friends Life always needs help in the office with filing papers,
data entry, getting together resources for activities and providing support to our staff.
This role is essential to the functioning of Friends Life because it helps the organization
run as smoothly as possible. It also allows for us to have the best quality program for our

Volunteers are integral to Luke 14:12's mission of serving quality meals to all who are hungry.
Luke 14:12 needs at least 12 volunteers to serve lunch to our guests every Tuesday and Friday
from 11:15-12:45. Some of our volunteers will work in our kitchen, filling plates with quality
food and other volunteers will serve our guests in our dining room. Luke 14:12 serves our meals
'restaurant-style', so volunteers are assigned as table hosts/hostesses. Not only do they assist our
guests with their meal, but they offer them grace, respect and hospitality. Volunteers are also
needed to assist with meal preparation from 9:00-11:15 every Tuesday and Friday.

SHIP-State Health Insurance Assistance Program
Primary Contact: Laura Dial
Volunteer Program Coordinator
101 Sam Watkins Blvd.
Mt. Pleasant, TN 38474
931-698-8761
Purpose: The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) provides free and unbiased
Medicare information to Medicare beneficiaries and their families throughout the year.
We are funded by Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS) and are housed at the
South Central TN Development District. We are a not for profit agency.
We rely on volunteers for most of the counseling, especially during the Annual
Enrollment Period (AEP), Oct 15 - Dec 7 each year. This is the only time during the
year that many Medicare beneficiaries can change a Part D drug plan or a Medicare
Advantage plan for the next year.
There is a great need for computer proficient people to assist with providing the correct
information for the beneficiaries. With that information decisions can be made by the
beneficiaries about Part D prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage Plans.
We cover a 13-county region in the south central part of TN. We will primarily be
looking for individuals from Maury, Lawrence, Giles, Marshall, and Hickman counties.
Volunteer Opportunities:
During the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), Oct. 15 - Dec 7 we focus on using the
Medicare.gov web site to do comparisons of beneficiaries current Part D plans with the new plans
for 2013. After comparing plans we can enroll a person in the best plan for them for the
upcoming year.
This would be a great opportunity for pharmacy students to use their knowledge of prescription
medications. This would be a great opportunity for anyone who plans to work with the elderly or
disabled to assist individuals in that community to really save money on needed medications.
With the influx of the Baby Boomers into the Medicare system at the rate of 10,000 a day, the
need for this type of counseling continues all year.
