When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Two thousand five hundred thirty three men from McHenry County answered President Lincoln’s call for volunteers to fight for our nation during the Civil War. Sadly, 1 out of 6 did not return alive. But many did come home to lead interesting and productive lives. Join Crystal Lake Historical Society President, Diana Kenney, as she shares the stories of some of our Civil War veterans after they came marching home. We hope that you can join as at 7pm on Thursday, May 12th at The Pointe to see When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

World War II, for many of us, is part of our family lore. Jennifer Holik has found a niche for research and writing with her interest in World War II. She has over 20 years of research and writing experience, has published a number of books and guides on World War II research and has recently lectured and researched in the Netherlands about WWII. She will be speaking all day at our conference on various aspects of World War II and finding the records of those veterans who were often reluctant to talk about their experiences. Tony Burroughs, has been active in the genealogical community for over 20 years. He is an author, teacher, and lecturer Tony taught genealogy at Chicago State University and is well known internationally. Tony will be speaking on Chicago genealogy in two lectures, a subject he knows very well. He contributed to the public television series “Ancestors” and has received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Genealogical Society. Thomas MacEntee will return for the third year to MCIGS’ Summer Conference. His background in information technology allows him to share with genealogists, as well as others, his expertise. Thomas created GeneaBloggers.com, a community of well over 2500 bloggers who document or write on genealogy. He is also the creator of Genealogy Do Over, a method to readdress your research and to start over in the best way possible. We hope you are planning on attending the conference this year. We have received a huge number of registrations so far and there is a chance your choice of presentations will fill up quickly. Please check our conference page for further details at http://www.mcigs.org/conference. You can also get updates on Twitter by following @MCIGenSoc or search hashtag #MCIGenSoc2016.

Newly Purchased Books In an effort to help both members and the community at large with their continuing family research, MCIGS routinely purchases books to fill the void in our collection. This month we purchased the following books: 1804 Tax Assessment Baltimore County, Maryland by Michael A. Ports Virginia Tax Records from the Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, the William and Mary College Quarterly, and Tyler’s Quarterly “First Census” of Kentucky, 1790 by Gaius Marcus Brumbaugh and Charles B. Heinemann “Second Census” of Kentucky, 1800: A Privately Compiled and Published Enumeration of Tax Payers Appearing in the 79 Manuscript Volumes Extant of Tax Lists of the 42 Counties of Kentucky in Existence in 1800 by G. Glenn Clift Trace Your German Roots Online: A Complete Guide to German Genealogy Websites by James M. Beidler. Each of these books will be placed in the Crystal Lake Public Library. The German book will be allowed to circulate so you can check it out and use it at home. Normally German books would be housed at the McHenry Public Library in the MCIGS collection but the Library has already purchased this book. Please keep in mind that with each of these libraries it takes time for the books to be processed and placed on the shelves.

New Member Spotlight Please welcome several new members who have recently joined MCIGS: Carrol Egbert, Grayslake, Illinois Greg Hoaglin, Marengo, Illinois Diane Gorman, Crystal Lake, Illinois Rita Sullivan, Hebron, Illinois Cathy Werner, Marengo, Illinois

Greg Hoaglin: I have been involved with my family research since 1966 when our family had a reunion of 182 members at one time. The summer picnic inspired me to ask my mother about the history of our family and if we have anything listing all of our relations. That started my journey. After fifty years of looking for family information into the past it has been very rewarding. I have 12 generation back on my mother’s side and 7 generation back on my father’s. I have Revolutionary War links to historical documents and I know the migration of my family moving westward to Iowa. I now have a three volume photo album / scrapbook that documents our family

from the 1870s to the 1960s. The family surnames are GEREN (mother side) and HOGLUND (father side). My career was in printing for 32 years as a color expert for the largest companies in printing in the world. I have had the pleasure of traveling all over Europe, Canada and the United States working with many different companies and people. My wife and I have moved 14 times since 1996 because of my job and loved every move. New experiences and cultures. I am now giving back to the community by working at Turning Point in Woodstock, the only Domestic Violence Agency in McHenry County. The work is very rewarding and I enjoy the people of our community hearing their stories. My interests have changed over the years but the constants are coin collecting, working on my 1929 Ford Model A, gardening and collecting antiques. I continue my education by taking internet based college courses. Right now I am taking the History of the World 1760 to 1910 from the University of Virginia. I never want to slow down and I want to learn something new every day as it keeps me young.

Rita Sullivan currently lives in Hebron, Illinois. She’s hoping that by joining MCIGS she will benefit from hearing different speakers on a variety of topics. The current organization she belongs to mainly focuses on England, Irish and Scottish speakers. So, she would like to see some programs on Italy and France as she also has ancestors from those countries.

The surnames she’s researching include: ESFORD, POTIER, MCDONALD, RILEY, LAVEZZA, SULLIVAN and COX. “I’ve been seriously researching for 4 years, but I started in my 30's looking into relatives and how they met and what drew them to their current area to settle

down. I've always wanted to know about my ancestors and where they came from, always asking my grandmother about her parents and what were they like as parents.”

The Esford family search has taken me to Canada and then back to England, although the family was shocked to find out that the Esford name was English and not Irish. I haven't been to those countries but thanks to Family Search and Ancestry I can travel on the Internet without leaving me home. I've been told by two of my husband's aunts that they are cousins to the actress Helen Hayes. Helen Hayes and Ray Sullivan, the aunts’ father, went to Cubs baseball games together. I haven't been able to find any connection yet but hopefully I will get an answer for that also.

I still work full time which can sometimes get in the way of my research, but in a few years I hope to retire. When not working on genealogy I enjoy traveling and seeing new sights, I also enjoy reading, sewing and cooking.
