Material Futures – ARST 3780 , SP ‘14 Assignment #2: Creating Volume with Material Manipulation In this assignment, you will be pushing the concept of material and dimension in your work. Your boards will serve as a starting point for the look and feel of the surface of your pillow. Through your material choice, the sources you pull, and the shape and function of your pillow, you will be demonstrating your point of view as a designer. Begin by choosing a total of 4 related images that demonstrate texture that interest you and demonstrate the feel you are trying to achieve. (Organized, smooth? Rough and gritty? Flowing and organic?) These images should also address color. Apply these neatly to an 8.5” x 8.5” board. From your boards, you will begin creating a total of 3 samples that demonstrate the technique(s) you will be working with. Utilize the techniques you have learned in Material Futures to date:

1) Pleats 2) Stitch n’ Slash 3) Tucks 4) Gathers 5) Shirring 6) Use stitching and freestyle embroidery as an design element

In your samples, combine and explore the potential of the techniques. You can also incorporate machine stitches and freestyle embroidery to define lines and shapes. You may dye your fabrics, tip the edges with dye or paint, create multiple layers, or create strips of manipulated fabric and sew together, etc. 2) Create a sketch that shows scale, proportion, color, etc. of your pillow concept. Work in class and outside of class this week on your material manipulation. Final size of should be in the range of 36” x 48” or 48” x 48”, however, proportion should be determined by the direction of your idea. Multiple smaller works are also a possibility.
