This feeling comes over me quiet suddenly and quite often. “Time is flying by much too fast! How will I ever get everything done that needs to be done?” It’s a haunting feeling that sweeps over me at odd moments, like in the middle of the night or while I’m having breakfast or doing my daily catch-up of emails. February is already half gone. The celebration of Pastor and People is less than two weeks away. The beginning of the Lenten Season is two and a half weeks away on Ash Wednesday, March 6th.

One of the major events of the Lenten Season is the Pastor’s Class. This class is traditionally for students 5th through 7th grade who are emotionally and academically able to participate in a class with a demanding curriculum. Students need to be mature enough to make personal decisions regarding their faith, their belief in Jesus and their desire to be baptized.

The curriculum I’ve designed is a ten week curriculum that we teach in six weeks. The class meets on Sunday from 12:00 – 2:30 PM. Students are assigned mentors especially chosen for them and we have a catered lunch. We also have several breaks during the class for dessert and snacks. Our experience has taught us that these youth are always hungry! Last year students and parents completed a questionnaire following the class. They indicated that the class was extremely beneficial to the students in many ways. Since the class is only six weeks in duration we need a commitment from each student not to miss a class session.

We will have a get-acquainted meeting next Sunday, February 24, following the morning service of worship for prospective students and parents. I urge anyone interested in having their child take this year’s class to attend this meeting. It will be held in the Chapel as close to 11:30 AM as possible. If you have questions please call me at the church office – 818-763-8218 or email me at [email protected].

Like I said -- “Time is flying by much too fast!”

I spent an hour today bringing my personal calendar up to date. It was a bit daunting. I have the honor to serve on three foundation boards within our denomination. The spring meetings for two of them fall close together during the two weeks following Easter. Fortunately the Disciples Seminary Foundation board meets in Claremont. But the Christian Church Foundation meets in Indianapolis, IN. While flying is not my favorite pastime these days, it is always good to return to my home state for a few days. The work these foundations do is extremely important in assuring good leadership and financial support for the churches of our denomination. I’m sure I always learn more than I contribute.

Having three school districts that serve our children and youth dismiss for summer breaks on three different dates separated by a three week time period plays havoc in scheduling our local summer camps. BUSD dismisses on Thursday, May 23. LAUSD is out for the summer on Friday, June 7. And many charter schools, including iLead, are not out until Friday, June 14.

Our preliminary camp schedule with starting dates, which will be formalized this coming week, is as follows:

Music Theater Camp – June 17; Art Camp – June

For those of you who know someone serving in the armed forces, as well as people serving in other capacities, we want to lift them up in prayer... please let us know when they come home!

Christopher A. Bernstein • Chris Diaz • Joshua Bigbee • Thomas Matthews

We also want to continue to pray for peace, for wisdom for the world’s leaders, and for the people of all war-torn areas of our world.

24; Dance Fit Camp – July 1 (four day camp); Cooking Camps – July 8; High School Mission Trip to Tennyson Center, Denver, CO – July 15; Music Camp – July 29; Vacation Bible School – August 5.

We still have to formalize the dates for Photography Camp and we may offer, for the first time, an Advanced Photography/Video Camp. These camp dates should be posted by the end of this week and registration opened shortly thereafter. I am also hoping that once again we can have a writing camp.

Our Regional Camps at Loch Leven Conference Grounds are open to registration. CYF 2 for youth entering 11th and 12th grades and for graduating seniors • June 23–29; Mini Camp for children entering grades 1 through 3 • June 23–26; Chi Rho for those entering grades 6 through 8 • June 30–July 6; CYF 1 for youth entering grades 9 and 10 • July 7–13; Junior Camp for students entering grades 4 and 5 • July 14–20; Wee Camp for children ages 3 through those entering Kindergarten (parents attend with child.) • July 17–19.

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday in worship. You’re in for a real treat in several different ways.

Some folks are really good at sitting quietly, unmoving for 20 minutes at a time. Others of us find our fingers drumming and our mind wandering after one minute. Kines-thetic prayer is a way of praying using more than just our minds. It is using your fingers, hands, feet and sometimes even your whole body! So, let’s get up and get connected! 90% of the Hebrew Scriptures are removed, and about 50% of the New Testament is missing.

An example is found in Genesis and the story of Joseph being sold into slavery. He is portrayed as ac-cepting his lot in life, keeping his faith in God and re-ceiving his reward in the end. Another book, Exodus, contained chapters 19 and 20, where the 10 Command-ments are found. But missing from the Slave Bible is the actual Exodus! The story of Moses leading Israel out of bondage is missing; there is no account of Moses com-ing to Pharaoh and saying, “Let my people go.”

Passages that emphasized equality between groups of people were also removed. In Galatians, Paul wrote, “There is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; For Ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” This verse was also removed from the Slave Bible, as was the entire book of Revelation, which tells of a new heaven and a new earth in which evil will be punished and the righ-teous rewarded.

On the other hand, highlighted passages in-cluded, “Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trem-bling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ.” (Ephesians 6:5, KJV)

There is still so much for us to learn about how the enslavement of people of color has been so deeply woven into the fabric of our history. Along with slav-ery was the taught idea of “black” as representational of evil, and “white” means purity. This analogy comes to us from Western arguments from the Middle Ages that gave justification for treating Africans as less than, or even non-human. The Church itself argued that non-

There is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female; For Ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

– Galatians 3:28, KJV

Late last year I read an article from the Religion News Service that opened my eyes to a startling real-ity of the history of our nation, and the history of the Church. It was always disappointing to be reminded again of the ways that colonial peoples regarded the in-digenous people that were already residing in the “New World.” Added to that is the sin of slavery that had its origins in the 1620’s with the transporting of Africans to be sold as slaves in the Americas.

In preparation for my teaching a history of reli-gion in America, I came across this article titled, “Mu-seum highlights ‘Slave Bible’ that focuses on servitude, leaves out freedom.” The museum from the article is a recently opened Museum of the Bible in Washington DC. A major exhibit for the first floor of the museum features an original copy of what is known as the “Slave Bible: Parts of the Holy Bible, selected for the use of the Negro Slaves, in the British West-India Islands.” It was published in 1806 by a missionary organization wishing to convert slaves to Christianity. Unfortunately, these same missionaries were fully complicit in the mindset that slaves needed to remain in servitude if the econom-ic system demanded the use of their labor. Slaves may be Christian, but they also need to stay where they are.

The purpose of the Slave Bible was to teach the faith. However the copies provided to the missionaries were highly redacted, or edited. Most of the Hebrew Scriptures were missing from the text. Approximately

Christian indigenous peoples were not fully human. We are nearing the end of Black History Month.

I believe that we need to continue to learn, to stretch our knowledge and the edges of our comfort zones. The study of Black history is also the study of history for all of us. We have a lot of work to do to make amends for the injustice that has been perpetuated for over 500 years of oppression. Please join me in prayer for our na-tion and our world, to “seek justice, love mercy and to walk humbly with our God.” (Micah 6:8)

We designed “Understanding Grief” to help those who have experienced the loss of a family member or friend.

In addition to a renewed sense of hope, it is our aim that you walk away with an in-depth perspective of grief, an understanding that you are not alone, and coping skills to

help you grow through your grieving process.

I went to a yoga class Friday. I usually do. But some-thing unusual happened. There was an unusual amount of cars on the street where I usually park. I ended up parking a little further down than I usually would, on the side of the street I don’t usually park on.

I grabbed my yoga mat and headed for the studio. I noticed it was starting to rain, but it wasn’t a long walk and I thought I probably didn’t need my umbrella. But something inside was tugging at me, go get the um-brella, you might need it later. So I went around to the other side of my car.

When I reached for the door I saw a twenty dollar bill lying on the street. I knew it was for me. It wasn’t there because I needed twenty dollars. It was a reminder of something I needed more than money.

I’d been wasting a lot of brain energy on my finances lately. I found myself in an old, but familiar frame of mind. The frame of limitations. The frame of forcing everything to fit into place. The frame that leaves me feeling boxed in, claustrophobic, and insecure.

But God. God doesn’t let me fit things into place. Too often He has to remind me that I don’t have all the pieces. I have to trust that He will give me each piece as I’m ready.

I picked up that bill. I looked at it. I flipped it over, I didn’t know why. And then I knew.

And you do, too. Those four familiar words. “In God We Trust.”

We want to thank everyone who has supported the CWF Jewelry Sales in the past with their purchases and donations!! It’s time to request new donations for the Spring Sale. It’s fast approaching and we need you all to bring to the church what you find in your search there at home. Drop-offs can be made in the church office with a note attached that says “Jewelry Sale”, in the Narthex on Sundays, or handed to Sheryl Fitzpatrick, Ann Jones, Mary Heiss, Eunice Cox, Linda Wolf, or Sue Williams (leaders of the groups). We plan to price them at our March meeting for sale on Palm

Sunday, April 14th. CWF Women Thank You!!

Did you know FCCNH has a Facebook page? Please check it out and Like us on Facebook. It is a great way to keep up with what is going on in the life of the church.

I greet you in the wonderful magnificent name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We had a strong turnout for our Pop-up mis-sion trip with GloZell Green. We learned about the importance of social media, using it respon-sibly, and understanding that what we post will never go away... even after we press delete. Today’s society is vastly different because of social media. The world of social media is a new explosion with secret rooms, language, and signs which most of us can’t track.

Glozell did an amazing job of helping our youth navigate their emotions. She helped our kids understand that your core being is what you want to develop your social media around. Staying true to self regardless of if it’s comedy, realism, technology, or auto-mobile interest; understanding self is the beginning of a successful social media presence. In addition, she spoke about focusing on your social media work and not com-paring it to others. Glozell’s strongest advice was not to get lost in likes/views. She implored our youth that it’s not all about followers but the great work and person you are promoting online. In short- she said stay true to your Christian values and allow the gifts Christ has blessed you with to drive your journey.

This Sunday, you will see Maggie Webber, Joey

Vallero, Ruby Dunmore, and Aliza Nozsika-Zaun per-form a reenactment of the scripture for Rev. Dr. Ben Bohren’s sermon. This is a big step for the youth as three out of the four youth are not performers in any way. Rev. Bohren had an idea and he called on our youth to assist in his vision.

I look forward to the performance and I’m grateful for GloZell’s words and encouragement. We are build-ing the future day by day and for that we should all be excited about the direction of our church.

With love,Jeremy Gillett

Please join us Sunday, March 3rd for a Family Day celebration in honor of Pastor Bob’s 50th Anniversary with FCCNH! We are all grateful to Pastor Bob for his 50 years of love and service to our FCCNH family, our Sunday School children and Christian Nursery School, so we will be celebrating his 50 years with an extra spe-cial Meet & Greet with fun for all ages throughout our FCCNH campus following our March 3rd morning ser-vice.

For those who’ve asked, “How can I help?” here are a few things we need from you:

DESSERTS: We need your yummy cupcakes, cookies and finger desserts to supplement our March 3rd Meet & Greet meals in the Social Hall and the Annex! Please note: All desserts must be NUT-FREE, and should be delivered ready-to-serve, already on a tray, plate or cupcake stand (labeled with your name for safe return, please). To sign up, please see Deb Carson during this Sunday’s Meet & Greet in the Social Hall, email [email protected], or sign up at: www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0a4ba5a92ea1fc1-dessert.

VOLUNTEERS: We still need some “heavy lifters” to help with set-up on Saturday, March 2nd (late morning/early afternoon), AND with tear-down/reset on Sunday afternoon immediately following the March 3rd Family Day. We also still need help during the actual event. To volunteer, please see Deb Carson during this Sunday’s Meet & Greet in the Social Hall or email [email protected]. Thanks!

“Speaking Christian:A Second Look at Christian Teachings””

tuesdays . 10:00 am in the Annex

“Speaking Christian” is based on a book by Marcus Borg. There are many words, phrases and concepts that most Christian people have a connection to, even if they don’t always under-stand the concepts in full. In many cases, our modern usage of these words is very different from the concepts they were originally intended to convey by Biblical writers, ancient teachers or theologians and by those who began to shape the early life of Christian communities. We will take a second look at Christian concepts.
