Youth Culture Lesson ~ Finding Teachable Moments in Culture From YouthWorker Journal and YouthWorker.com ~ Going Techless ~ Girl Finds New Interests in Week Without Phone By Paul Asay Posted: July 26, 2010 What Happened: Deisha Brown Campbell, 13, thought that giving up technology for a short time would be simple. Sure, she and her 4-month-old phone were nearly inseparable; and she admitted, “I text more than I talk.” Still, how hard could going a week without tech be? Answer: Harder than you think. For a week, as part of an experiment with “Nick News with Linda Ellerbee,” Deisha put away her phone, her computer time and anything else that smacked of technology—and she thought at first she might go crazy. For the first day, Deisha moped around her room, unable to figure out what to do with herself without her phone and computer. “I didn‟t think she was going to make it,” says her mother. “I thought she was going to break down and beg.”

Ellerbee thought something like that might happen. “We thought, „What if this generation had to unplug?‟” she says. “[We wanted] kids to ask themselves: [Am I] getting too lost inside the toy box?” “I knew I was addicted, but I didn‟t want to seem like it,” Deisha admitted on the show. As time went on during the week, a curious thing began to happen. She began cooking, singing and playing guitar. For someone who preferred texting to talking, “I ended up being the talkative one,” she says. “My family basically got sick of me because I was always around, talking.”

When Deisha‟s mother gave Deisha her phone back at the end of the week, Deisha wouldn‟t take it. “I noticed how much fun I was having without it,” she says. Instead, she‟s decided to write a book. Talk About It: Average youth in the United States ages 8-18 spend nearly eight hours a day interacting with “entertainment media”—defined as everything from television and computers to iPods and cell phones. Teens now spend more time watching television on their smartphones than they spend talking on them. With that in mind, how much time do you spend every day with electronic media? How do you spend most of that time: Texting? Watching TV? Playing videogames? Have you ever spent a significant amount of time “unplugged,” during a camping trip, vacation or extended blackout? If so, what was it like? Was it hard? Did you learn anything about yourself? Do you think sometimes technology can distract us from what‟s most important? How hard do you think it‟d be to give up technology for a week? For a month? Could you? Do you think it‟d get easier or harder in time? If you were to give up tech for a time, what would you miss the most? How would you communicate with your friends? How would you spend your time? What the Bible Says: “Now then, stand still and see this great thing the Lord is about to do before your eyes” (1 Sam. 12:16). “When words are many, sin is not absent…” (Prov. 10:19). “As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words” (Ecc. 5:3). “I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways” (Ps. 119:15). http://www.youthworker.com/youth-lessons-bible-study/youth-lessons/11635406/

MOVIES YOU SHOULD SEE!

Charlie St. Cloud

Charlie St. Cloud stars Zac Efron as Charlie, a bright young man with a promising future. Charlie’s life is halted when he is unable to let go of the grief of losing his little brother in a drunken car

accident years ago. Growing up in a small, seaside yachting village, Charlie is at the top of his high school graduating class with a full-ride sailing scholarship to Stanford in the fall. During the summer, Charlie and his little brother, Sam, practice baseball every evening in the woods at sunset. However, when a tragic, drunk driver takes young Sam’s life, Charlie cannot let go of him. Still seeing visions of his late brother, Charlie promises Sam that he will meet him everyday at sunset to practice. Five years later, Charlie works a job as the caretaker at the local cemetery, close to the woods, so that he can play ball with Sam every day at sunset. Then, one day, Charlie meets Tess, a young yachts-woman who is about to undertake a one-woman sail around the world. When a sailing accident leaves Tess in a life-threatening situation, Charlie must decide be-tween going after the woman he loves or keeping his promise to his little brother. Charlie St. Cloud is a moving, heartfelt drama. While there are some strong, overt Christian, moral elements, such as positive mentions of God and Christian prayer, including prayer to Jesus Christ during a funeral, as well as belief in miracles, forgiveness and second chances, there are also some elements that require caution, especially for younger audiences. There is some light language, and disturbing violence that in-clude teenage drunkenness and a graphic car wreck. That said, this new Zac Efron movie is still an enjoy-able drama with uplifting content.

Highly recommended!!! BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ!

The Shack By William P. Young

Mackenzie Allen Phillips's youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation, and evidence that she may have been brutally mur-dered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later, in this midst of his great sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on wintry afternoon and walks back into his dark-est nightmare. What he finds there will change his life forever. Mac is a grief-stricken father in mid-life about to have an ex-traordinary experience with God. His great sadness began four years ago on a weekend camping trip, when his 6-year-old daughter, Missy, was murdered. What he couldn't know then, but is about to learn, was God's purpose for Missy's death. Roger Mueller's clear, gentle voice characterizes Mac's family with high-spirited joy and laughter. His portrayal of Missy's ani-mated excitement makes her especially believable. His pol-ished performance of grief-stricken Mac brings tears. With em-pathy and sensitivity, Mueller captures the mysterious voices of those who have invited him to the now abandoned, yet trans-formed, cabin in the wilderness. This compelling fantasy ex-plores themes of love, loss, and blame. G.D.W. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Finding God in the Shack Randal Rauser The nature of God is complex and has been debated for centuries. `The Shack' has brought the discussion out of church halls and into the coffee shops. Rauser joins the dialogue on the Trinity, hierarchy within the God-head, the existence of evil and the after life with intelligence and wit. Those who have read `The Shack' and found themselves looking for answers will discover that `Finding God in The Shack' is an informative exploration into these questions.

Five Finger Prayer 1. Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a "sweet duty." 2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doc-tors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in point-ing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers. 3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance. 4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact, that this is our weakest finger; as any pi-ano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them. 5. And lastly comes our little finger; the smallest fin-ger of all. Which is where we should place ourselves in rela-tion to God and others. As the Bible says, "The least shall be the greatest among you." Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself.. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper per-spective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively.

The First Kiss At the end of their first date, a young man in a bygone era took his favorite girl home. He decided to try for that important first kiss. With an air of confidence, he leaned his hand against the wall, smiled, and said, "How about a good night kiss?" "Are you crazy?" she said. "My parents will see us!" "Oh, come on! Who's gonna see us at this hour?" "No, please. Can you imagine if we get caught?" "Come on, they're all sleeping!" "No way. It's too risky!" "Please, please, please. I like you so much." "No, no, no. I like you too, but I just can't!" "Oh yes you can. Please?" "No, no. I just can't." "Pleeeeease?. . ." Then to their surprise, the porch light went on, the door opened, and there stood the girl's sister, hair disheveled, in her pajamas. In a sleepy voice she said, "Dad says to go ahead and give him a kiss. Or I can do it. If need be, dad will come down himself and do it. Whatever you do, tell your date to take his hand off the intercom button."

As Soon as Jesus Comes We decided to let our three-year-old son record the message for our home answering machine. The re-hearsals went smoothly: "Mommy and Daddy can't come to the phone right now. If you'll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they'll get back to you as soon as possible." Then came the test. I pressed the record button and our son said sweetly, "Mommy and Daddy can't come to the phone right now. If you'll leave your name, phone number, and a brief message, they'll get back to you as soon as Jesus comes."

Confusing Vows and Vowels My nine-year-old nephew, Phillip, was a ring bearer in my wedding. At the wedding rehearsal, the singer asked when she should begin singing. The pastor an-swered, "After the vows." She asked: "What are the vows? I'll need a cue." Phillip compounded the confu-sion as he explained: "The vowels are A-E-I-O-U.

Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth Week Thirty-Two May he so strengthen your hearts in holiness... (1 Thessalonians 3:13) "Do not be afraid to be holy! Have the courage and humility to present yourselves to the world determined to be holy, since full, true freedom is born from holiness." --Pope John Paul II, Santiago, Spain

Think About That Sometimes we are afraid to be holy because we think it means we have to be better than others. But holiness isn't about being "better than others." It is about living our lives like Jesus lived his life. It is that simple. Take Action Take some time to write down three ways in which you are a holy person. In other words, write down three ways in which you already live your life like Jesus lived his life. Now, write down three more ways that you'd like to live your life more like Jesus did. This week your goal is to try to live like Jesus, especially in these additional three ways. Say A Prayer Jesus, help me to not be afraid to live my life the way you did. Help me to be like you each day.

Did You Know? John Paul II has received all of the Presidents of the United States during his papacy, including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Taken from...My Dear Young Friends: Pope John Paul II Speaks to Youth on Life, Love, and Courage My Dear Young Friends, a collection of fifty-two weekly reflections on living in the Spirit, invites young people to read and act on Pope John Paul II's inspiring addresses to young people gathered at annual World Youth Day celebrations. "I have very little cash equity, but you will find that the greater part of my wealth is buried some-where in the ground, about a foot and a half beneath the surface. But I’ve forgotten precisely where." He died soon after. The four sons set to work on the fields and dug up every inch of them, searching for the treasure their father said was buried in the ground. However, they found nothing. Still they decided that as long as they dug up all the ground, they might as well sow a crop and reap a good harvest. That autumn, after a profitable harvest, the four brothers again began digging in search of the buried treasure; as a consequence their farmland was turned over more thoroughly than any other farm in the area. And of course, again they reaped an abundant harvest. After they had repeated this pro-cedure for several more years, the four sons finally realized what their father meant when he told them that his wealth was buried in the ground.

The Will One day after service an elderly lady came up to the priest and asked him if she could speak with him. They went to his office where she told him that she would like to leave everything she has to the church. The priest was very happy with this news, but he remembered that she had 2 children. “You have 2 children; don’t you want to leave some to them too?” She then said to him, “My husband died a few years ago and when he died, instead of being sad, they were very excited to see what they were getting in the will. When I go, I

The Dirty, Old Basket Anonymous A novice went to the novice master and explained that he was disgruntled with going to Mass because he was-n’t getting anything out of it. The novice master picked up a dirty, old basket and told him to go to the well, fill it with water; then bring it back. The novice did as he was told, but by the time he returned the water had dripped out of the basket. The novice master told him to go back to the well again—three more times, actually—and each time the novice returned with no water in the bas-ket. Frustrated, the novice asked what’s the point of keep going to the well since he was returning with no water. The novice master smiled and said, "The point is not in returning with water but in going to the well. After all, the water has cleaned a dirty, old basket."

"Social scientists are asking us to take notice that as our technological resources increase, our sense of community decreases. A great paradox of our time is that while technol-ogy offers us instant com-munication, we use it to isolate ourselves from each other. We face a world without insight into the social nature of man."

Saint Pulcheria Memorial 10 September

Profile Daughter of Byzantine Emperor Arcadius and Empress Eudoxia. Her father died when she was 15, and she became regent of the empire on 4 July 414 until her younger brother Theodosius was old enough to rule. Pulcheria took special care of her brother’s education, ensuring a strong religious background. She took a vow of chas-tity, and worked for religious reform and evangelization through the empire. When Theodosius took the throne, Pulcheria faded for a while into court life. She supported Pope Leo the Great re-garding the Monophysite controversy, and when Theodosius married in 421, his wife convinced him to exile Pulcheria. On the death of Theodosius, Pulcheria was recalled to be empress of the Byzantine Empire. She sponsored the Council of Chalcedon in 451, and supported the Church against the Nestorian and Eutychian heresies. Built churches, hospitals, hospices, and a university in the city of Constantinople.
