    SPOTLIGHT ON HOUSEHOLDS

“Our households have a noble purpose.” Ponder that statement for a moment. Now think in

terms of what that might mean to you as a parish leader. How might you view the households

    on your parish rosters?

This statement is part of Bishop Ricken’s Pastoral Reflection, Disciples on the Way: Teach

My People to Pray, Year II which focuses on The Catholic Household as a Home of Prayer

and Love. The document challenges us to understand our households as more than a statistic

that defines our parish but as a living breathing domestic church that “gives meaning to and

has a special place in the Body of Christ.” In Bishop Ricken’s statement, we certainly get a

sense of households as “Holy Ground.”

In his reflection, Bishop asks us to recognize the variety of households as well as the stress

and pressures placed on them today. He is encouraging households to become “schools of

prayer and love by making the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph your model and

    example.”

With the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia in September and the Synod of Bishops

on the Family in October, there will be much discussion of this important topic in the days

ahead. As parish leaders, we will need to ask ourselves the important questions: How are we

currently supporting our households? What might we do to encourage them to become homes

    of prayer and love?

In the months ahead, the Department of Stewardship and Pastoral Services along with our

colleagues in other departments will be looking to assist parish leaders in their efforts to focus

on enhancing and increasing household prayer. Diocesan staff will be traveling to seventeen

locations in August for workshops. Ideas and resources will be available. Please feel free to

call upon us if we can help in any way.

Our Lady of Zapopan is from the Village of Tzapopa (now Zapopan)

which is close to the city of Guadalajara.

The History: Francisco de Bobadilla, a conquistador, defeated the Tochos Indians who rebelled against Spanish power and

founded Tzapopa in 1541. Franciscan friars came to evangelize the population and Fray Antonio of Segovia

brought a small statue of Mary Immaculate for the newly settled colony. The story says that this friar had offered

his mediation in order to prevent more bloodshed. He came before the Indians holding a crucifix in one hand,

and a small statue of Mary in the other. The Indians watched luminous rays around the statue, which made the

Indians lay down their arms. Our Lady of Zapopan has had countless miracles continue to happen throughout the

area including in Guadalajara, now Mexico’s second largest city, from protecting the city from plague to

proclaiming her Patroness against storms and lightning. The current shrine (the earlier shrines were constructed of

adobe) was inaugurated on September 8, 1730, and since then, has been enriched and beautifully enhanced.

Shrine: The statue of Mary is made of light wood and is thirty-four centimeters high. Mary wears a read carmine tunic

and a blue mantel, and there are traces of an earlier golden color. Her feet stand on a crescent moon; her hands

clasped in prayer. The statue is usually placed in a silver vase that covers her from her hips downward and this

vase is placed on a pedestal. The statue is clothed with rich garments and adorned with an abundant wig and an

imperial crown surrounded by a gold halo adorned with gems. She is girded with a blue scarf like a general.

Below her hands there is a precious circular reliquary containing a golden child Jesus. The golden staff hanging

from her right arm--possibly a commander's baton--complements the scepter she carries in her hands.

Locations: Our Lady of Zapopan is visiting SS Peter & Paul Parish in Green Bay on Friday, August 7th to Sunday, August 9th.

The celebration will conclude with a Spanish Mass at 12:30 pm. Our Lady of Zapopan will then be celebrated at

St Therese Parish in Appleton on Monday, August 10th to Wednesday August 12th, where there will be a Mass

    celebration.
