Turf’s Up! New LPMS Field By BETHANY SMITH

It started in June and took all summer. The new Lakelands Park 100 yard turf field was finally finished on Mon-day, October 13. We are now playing soccer, fris-bee, and so much more on this new and im-proved field.

The field is also open to all other stu-dents that play sports

for the City of Gaithersburg. You can reserve the field, but remember, its first come first serve.

I also got togeth-er with Mr. Bowers (P.E. teacher) and asked some questions about the field. I asked him what he thought.

Mr. Bowers said, “I love it. The field is beneficial and a lot safer than the old field.” Mr. Bowers added, “It’s low maintenance and better than a field made of dirt.”

Also, as a lot of us were, he was frustrat-ed with the turf not be-ing done on time. He

said, “The turf field was supposed to be done on the first day of school, and it wasn’t. It’s just a little frustrating going up to the softball field and down to the tennis courts to do our activi-ties.”

However, that doesn’t matter any-more! Now the turf is finally complete. So get up, get out, and have fun on this amazing new field!

Pirate Plays Coming Yer Way! By BETHANY SMITH

The New Turf Field Continued from Page 1

ARRRRR! Ahoy maties! I’m here to tell ye about the pirate theme of this year’s dra-ma productions. Savvy? The fall produc-tion is “Pirate School,” written by yer 8th grade English teacher, Mrs. Kirsten Tippets, and di-rected by Ms. Miriam Bowden.

The evening play will be on November 20th and 21st at 7:00pm. One more matinee show will be performed on November 22nd at 2:00pm.

If ye pay online for tickets, adults will be $7.50, students will be $3.50, and three and un-der shall be free. If ye purchase at the show, adults are $10, students are $5 and 3 and under shall remain free.

The story, writ-ten just for Lakelands Park MS, features Stella Darrington, daughter of the governor, who dreams of bein’ a pirate. She is expected to marry John Silver, but just wants some pirate ad-venture.

Overhearing Stella talking to her best friends, John realizes that his proposal will need some work. John‘s

best friend, Ruppert, convinces John to at-tend pirate school to im-press his future bride. At “Pirate School” all clas-ses are taught by Profes-sor Hook. But when the governor's wife gets kid-napped, it’s up to Stella and John’s crews to save the day!

The spring musi-cal is a secret to all. Not even yer drama club members know it! Do ye think ye know what the pirate play yer drama club might peform? All we know is it’s a pirate musical.

Well, I got to get back to my ship. See you at the play in November, maties!

Have you been wondering who some of the new staff are here at Lakelands Park? Well our series of articles has you covered. There are many new staff mem-bers, who have many different perspectives, and we will interview

them this year. We are so happy that all these new teachers chose to represent Lakelands Park. This issue we are featuring our new 6th

grade administrator, Mr. Jesse Loznak.

Mr. Loznak will help Lakelands Park be

an even better part of the community by continuing to chal-lenge the teachers and students to achieve beyond their expecta-tions. In another ten years he thinks the students and teachers

The popcorn was free, making it the most popular food of the night. The food sellers agreed that the popcorn was a great idea for the dance.

Rasheda, one of the popcorn sellers said, “Lots of people enjoyed the free popcorn."

A couple other food sellers, Sandy and Cecilia had a great time not only selling the food, but meeting new peo-

ple. Sandy said, “We really appreciate all the donations of the food. The parents and kids were very creative.” Ce-cilia agreed stating she, “Loved the energy, all was fun, and liked sell-ing the snacks!”

Crazy costumes were worn by the stu-dents, such as Darth Vader, The Candy Corn Queen, Pirates, and a classic Disney character, Eeyore. As the dance

went on, I got to talk to one of the teachers, Mr. Jim Reed. He thought the dance went great, and all the kids were having fun. “The dance was hip!” Mr. Reed con-cluded.

A lot of people loved the music. Sanni-nitha, an 8th grader, said, “The music was amazing, loved it all.” There was a DJ, who played all the Top Hits, including hip hop and R&B.

Some of the students gathered in the middle of the cafeteria as oth-ers stayed in the

hallway talking and playing games. Jas-mine, a 6th grader said to me, “The dance was awesome! It was fun with my friends.”

Overall, the dance was a success, and many students came up to me and said they cannot wait until the next dance.

Do you take in-strumental music at Lakelands Park Middle School? If you do, you probably know Mr. Stu-art. This 2014-2015 school year is his 10th year teaching with Montgomery County Public Schools.

Mr. Stuart’s main goals at Lakelands Park Middle School are having a high level of success this year and bridging from the ele-mentary level to the middle school level.

Mr. Stuart teach-es many different clas-ses, and doesn’t have a favorite group of musi-

cians because he be-lieves that they are in-comparable because they are all so different. For example, he gave the analogy, “What is your favorite song?” It’s hard to pick one!

Mr. Stuart also wants to publicize the music program. To do this, he would love to have more in school events as well as rec-ord a CD, if possible.

He has been playing percussion since high school and the clarinet since 4th grade. His favorite in-struments are the clari-net and the Latin per-cussion instruments, like the bongos.

As some of you

might not know, Mr. Stuart taught at A. Mar-io Loiederman Middle School (AMLMS) be-fore teaching at Lake-lands Park MS.

He says that there are many differ-ences between the schools. Here at LPMS, the ensembles are smaller and the room is bigger. At AMLMS, there were a wider vari-ety of instruments. An-other difference is that here at LPMS, they have no tubas, but at AMLMS, they had 2 tu-bas. The schedules were a bit different too. The classes were a little bit longer, making a rotating schedule.

One thing that

Mr. Stuart especially likes about LPMS is the students: he says the students are self-advocates, which means that they are not afraid to voice their opinion.

We are happy to welcome Mr. Stuart and help him achieve his goals for the music program.

Say Hello to Mr. Stuart:

will still be achieving high levels.

Mr. Loznak de-cided to come to Lake-lands Park because when he visited the communi-ty, he enjoyed being here and heard great

things about our school.

The universities he went to were Hood College, Western Michi-gan University, and Michigan State Universi-ty. When Mr. Loznak was younger, he didn’t know

that he wanted to work at a school; he always wanted to be a cop.

So far, he thinks the school is running re-ally well and the stu-dents are great and al-ways working hard.

Some of the things that you probably don’t know about Mr. Loznak are that he likes candy and loves any De-

troit sport teams. He also has a dog named Sparky (who is named after the mascot of a Michigan team). Sparky is a pug shnug.

Mr. Loznak loves being a part of the Lake-lands Park community! We are all so glad that Mr. Loznak chose LPMS and we hope he will stay here for many years!

FOOTBALL

“BREAKING” NEWS RGIII (also known as Robert Griffin the Third) dislocated his knee during their first game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. There has been a lot of dis-

cussion if this is the end of the young stars career in the NFL.

All fans have been wondering, “Is RGIII fit for the life in the NFL?” While RGIII was out, second stringer Kirk Cousins had most of the spotlight. But, since Kirk wasn’t doing so well, Colt McCoy came in and played well with the win against the Titans AND the Cowboys. RGlll made his come back, but will he be the Redskins’ starting quarterback this season? Stay tuned to find out.

WOW NEWS

Tom Brady led the New England Patriots to victory against the Cincinnati Bengals. Are you just as surprised as me? The Patriots beat one of the most unbeatable, well-rounded teams in the whole NFL. The Bengals lost by a long shot: 43-17 BEN-GALS LOSE. Will this be the beginning of an amaz-

ing New England Patriot Season? And why are the Seattle Seahawks, the Superbowl champs, crum-bling to pieces? Stay tuned to find out.

Star Rating: On Fandango: 4.5; MY RATING: 4.7 Rating/Genre: PG-13 -- Action/Adventure/Sci-Fi/Fantasy Short summary: “The Maze Runner” is based on the bestselling novel by James Dashner. This ad-venture thriller for young adults is about Thomas who is placed in a community of boys after his memory is erased. Soon he learns they are trapped in a maze. Now, he has to join forces with fellow "runners" for a shot at escape, and to save himself and his friends. Released: September 19, 2014

Length: 1 hr. 53 min. Review: The #1 reason I gave my rating is because I didn’t leave the theater wanting to go see the movie again. Believe me, the movie was good, but an hour after seeing the movie I forgot about it. I thought it was forget-table because the movie could have been a little more graphic. I think Dylan O’Brien played his part very well in this movie. I am looking forward to the next movie in the series, “The Scorch Trials,” and I hope he will still be in the cast!

Cross Country Team: An Insider’s View By KASEY VAN WERT

As a two year member of the Lakelands Park cross country team, and growing up as a cross country coach’s daughter, I’ve experienced many intense parts of the cross country culture. Unfortunately, cross country seems to be overshadowed by other, more popular sports. There are a lot

of myths and misconceptions about running, many of which I have heard and tried valiantly, without success, to debunk. But enough about that, more about our school’s cross country team. A typical practice starts out with dynamic stretches and two warm-up laps. We take a sip of water, and we go over the day’s workout with Coach Gelman. We have about four different workouts, all of which are rigorous and challenging. A favorite workout among the team is the Lake Run. We run about 1.5-3.5 miles around a lake located in the Kentlands, but not too far from school. Another one of our rigorous workouts is Conditioning Circuits. We have different stations, including the agility ladder, suicides, stretching, and the infamous backwards hill planks. The girls’ team follows the same training as the boys team. In fact, the only thing we don’t do together is race. In that way, we bond as a team. Bonding as a team is important in cross country be-cause while you race against each other, it is still a team sport. You depend on each other for support during the toughest parts of the race, and quite honestly, from my experience, that’s what gets you the good times and helps you to win as a team. Many people don’t understand the way cross country works. In middle school meets, two schools compete and the top seven runners from each team are scored. Like in golf, you want the lower score. The way the top seven are scored is the place you come in, determines the amount of points you earn for your team. For example, 1st place = 1 point, 2nd place = 2 points, and so on and so forth.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the way to get the lowest score (and to auto-matically win) is by having your top seven place in 1-7. After the meet is over, the scores from both boys and girls races are added up and the team with the lowest total score wins. This year, on October 21st, the Falcons scored a major win. Many people don’t know, that our school’s cross country team has been UNDE-FEATED since the school opened. This season we trained long and hard, most of us taking time out of our already exceedingly busy weekends to run with hopes of bringing home the 10th undefeated season. On October 21st we did just that, with the girls pull-ing the weight for the team. In other words, the girls won, and the boys lost, the female runners won by just enough to make our total score lower than Gaithersburg’s. Another memorable moment from this sea-son was when my sister (captain of the Quince Or-chard Cross Country team) convinced her coach to bring her entire team, boys and girls JV and Varsity, to our first home meet of the season to cheer us on. It was last minute, so we had no clue as to what was going on until they started walking around and giv-ing us advice and positioning themselves at some of the toughest parts of the course. The fact that the high schoolers knew the course surprised us, considering the fact that due to the new turf field, the route had changed multiple times since their own last meet at Lakelands Park. Keegan, my sister, had a group of her team lined up shoulder to shoulder. On my first time around, I did-n’t really notice them. They seemed to have noticed this, and on my second and final time passing them, they scared me so badly, I’m surprised that I actually kept on running. This was my last season running for LPMS. It (literally) has been a good, long run, and it has given me so many memories and lessons. These past two seasons have given me the opportunity to soar in my own way, and this season, I was able to help others to find their own wings. Thanks, Coach Gelman and Falcons, for two awesome Cross Country seasons that I’ll never forget.

Halloween has just passed, and I know that a lot of people, including myself, didn’t have the perfect costume. Going to crowded stores, and getting an overly-priced costume can be a pain, so I’m here to tell you ten Do-It-Yourself (DIY) costumes you can create next Halloween or for your next costume party! After all, why should we only get to dress up once a year?

Here are some suggested cos-tumes for boys! The first costume is Waldo from Where’s Waldo. All you need is a red and white striped t-shirt, black glasses, and a red beanie. You instantly become the iconic carton book character. The next costume is Har-ry Potter. All you need for this costume are circular glasses and black face paint to draw a light-ning bolt on your forehead.

The 3rd costume is the easiest costume—it is an Error-Code shirt. All you need is a white t-shirt and a paint pen to write “Error 404 Costume Not Found”.

The 4th costume is my favorite superhero, Superman. To recreate Superman you need a red cape, a blue t-shirt, and paint to draw the Superman symbol onto the shirt.

The last costume for a boy is a T-Bird from the movie Grease. The only things you need for this costume is a white t-shirt, a black leather jacket, and

gel to put in your hair.

Now it’s time for the girl’s cos-tumes!

The first costume is really out of the box—it’s a jellyfish. All you need is any color umbrella, and the same color ribbon to su-per glue onto the rim of the um-brella; then you become a walk-ing jellyfish. The next costume is the classic Minnie Mouse. All you need for this costume is a black skirt or pants, a red shirt with white polka-dots, and mouse ears.

The 3rd costume is Rosie the Riveter, who is a symbol of feminism from the 1940’s. You’ll need a long-sleeved denim shirt with the sleeves rolled up, jeans,

and a red bandana to use as a headband for your hair, which should be in a bun.

The 4th costume gets me excited for winter—it’s a snow-man! You will need white pants, a white shirt, a red scarf, a black hat, and three black paper but-tons to tape onto your shirt.

The final costume is Kat-niss Everdeen from The Hunger Games. The only things you need for this costume is jeans, a black t-shirt, a dark green jacket, and then braid your hair to the side. If you wanted to, you could also buy a mockingjay pin.

I hope you liked these 10 last minute DIY costume ideas… and many of them can work for boys or girls!

The Gatekeepers is a great book series about 5 kids with spe-cial powers. These have to go on an adventure to find one another and defeat a dark evil before it destroys the world. This is a great book series giving lots of details, and you can follow the plot really well.

The Last Dragon Chronicles is a wonderful book series with dragons. The author uses a cool way to have the dragons seem realistic in the story. It’s about an adult named David who meets two people when he moves into their house as a tenant to get to college. The first book is a bit slow in the plot, but after that, they really get interesting. I really rec-ommend these books.

The Ranger’s Apprentice is a long book series, but is worth

reading all of them. These adven-tures with the apprentice Will, his master, and his friends are based around the medieval times. The author goes deep into detail, and the story is fast-paced, but you can keep up.

These are the three book series I recommend for you to read this year.

I practice martial arts. The name of the martial arts that I do is called judo. It is not about punching, kicking, or choking: it’s for defending yourself. Do not do it on other people just because you want to do it. It’s an art! You can use judo on other people when you are practicing. Also, ju-do can actually help you defend yourself when you’re in danger.

I began doing judo be-cause my uncle used to take my cousins there. I would go with them sometimes too, and loved it.

The beginning class was horrible, but once you work hard and get to the advanced class, you can spar with other people and prac-tice the throws. That’s what I like best.

My mom takes me to class now and it is fun. Your teacher is called a sensei. My teachers are two brothers: Sensei Kurt and Karl Tamai.

I learn how to defend my-self and it makes me feel excited. I think one day I could be in a tournament or a championship,

THE FALCON FLIER—Page 13 CREATIVE WRITING

This is me. I’m here. I’m shifting the words that you’re reading, altering them from whatever this person wrote.

I’ve been here for a while. For as long as you can remember, anyway. Sometimes I say your name as you’re falling asleep, or whisper urgently in your ear. Do you remember the time that I screamed, throwing panic through you and setting your heart racing?

That was fun.

You’re wondering who I am. It’s only natural. Of course, you already know.

I’m you. I’m the real you. I’m the mind that existed here before you stole my body, before you forgot about being a parasite. I’m the child who looked the wrong way, asked the wrong question, saw the wrong thing… but I’m not so little any more.

You may have forgotten me, but I’m still here. I’ve always been here.

And I’m going to get out…

I Know You By Holly Anderson

I know when shivers crawl up your spine I’m the ghost traces of a touch The cause of a panicked heart Why do you need to run? I might not hurt you. The flash of fear you feel Causing the goose bumps to rise The shadowy room to grow new monsters The fear flickering across your eyes No need to thank me. The flutter in the pit of your stomach The sense of being watched You thought you heard footsteps behind you Are you sure you’re alone? I could be around the corner. Hearing voices in your head They echo through your mind Stirring up old feelings, Ones you want to leave behind But shouldn’t I help you remember? The menace in the room with dangerous gleaming fangs, An evil presence invisibly waiting in the dark, A grotesque figure watching with curious eyes, Always hunting, patiently waiting I know you well, and you’ll know me… When it’s far too late.

Life and Us By Yamini Manikoth

In life:

Black and White is what’s obvious and clear

Red is piles of paper, uncompleted tasks

Blue is the loading screen of a computer,

Another day’s start

But we’re not there yet.

In the classroom:

Black and White is tick-tick-ticking,

Counting down with papers marked in Red,

Waiting to be released under the Blue sky,

Another day’s freedom.
