Roster and Mailing Data Updates Needed!
We’re not far away from starting to put together the 2010-2011 Roster (to be finalized and printed over the summer). Also, if you’re going away or on vaca-tion, you need to let us know or the post office will throw our mailings away and charge the squadron a fee to tell us they did so! Help us keep you up to date by checking your roster listing now (including email, boat listing, and phone numbers) and notifying Cheryl Eisen-hardt ([email protected] 775-3689), along with your leave and return dates and “away” address if you are going away. Don’t miss a single Afterdeck News issue or live with an incorrect roster listing for an entire year.
From the
Commander:
Darryl Aubrey, SN We had a successful Nettle’s
island rendezvous. Eight boats
attended and 23 people joined
for Saturday’s dinner (See page
10.) The only problem was the weather–very cold. It was my
first visit there and I was intrigued by the uniqueness and nov-
elty of that community. I recommend it for future rendezvous.
Our annual meeting was held on 9 March at Evergrene with
60 members and guests attending. The new board was duly
elected and will take office at the Change of Watch on 8 June
which will be aboard the Majestic Princess for a dinner cruise
and Change of Watch ceremonies. This is a new vessel, nicer
and larger than the one we used for the Change of Watch two
years ago. Please plan to attend what promises to be a special
event.
At the National Meeting in February the National Adminis-
trative Officer announced a new program aimed at recruitment
and retention-- named “Coming About – Charting a New
Course”. The program identifies 10 action items, most of which
are related to National’s web-based marketing program. They
are food for thought and squadrons could adapt some of these
ideas. The items are: 1. Increase the cost of the ABC3 online course from $34.95 to $49.95 and include a 6-month membership in the Cyber Squadron. 2. Include a free copy of the ABC3 course to new members signing up for a one-year membership in the Cyber Squadron. 3. Enhance the ABC website by including information regarding USPS member benefits and other advantages of being a USPS member. Estab-lish a link from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to the ABC Website as a trial for expansion to other states. 4. Develop a specific action plan for squadrons to recruit Cyber Squadron members into local squadrons. 5. Develop a team of regional experts to assist the NAO with issues re-garding new member recruitment and to assist the Districts and Squadrons to obtain necessary promotional items, education material and recruitment tools. 6. Create a recruiting tool kit for squadrons to include recruiting materials, talking points and selling skills. 7. Pursue the concept of Unified Members as presented in Kansas City. Enlist the help of ComRules to develop model bylaws for Family Unit Dues Structure and provide District and Squadron Treasurers tools to assess the impact of Family Unit Dues Structure on their organization. 8. Develop seminar kits for 10 students, which will include preprinted publicity materials and student manuals and return instructions and labels for unused materials. Extend 60-day payment terms to squadrons on semi-nar orders.
9. Promote a Boating Class Team concept consisting of Marketing, Edu-cation and Membership team members to successfully promote, deliver instruction and recruit new members by qualified and motivated members of the team. 10. Develop a New Member Welcome page on the Membership website to introduce new members to the organization, promote the benefits of USPS membership, and assure they receive value and satisfaction from their membership.
Earlier I recommended all members visit the National Site
and sign up for “Sail Angle”, a social networking site for USPS
members. If you have not done so, please do. It is very easy to
sign on and a useful tool for contacting others with similar in-
terests.
Mark your calendars for our next monthly meeting on 13
April and our Change Of Watch aboard the Majestic Princess
on 8 June and the D/8 conference on 23-25 April at the Boca
Marriott. This is a new venue which is closer so let’s have a
good turnout.

Know Your Fellow Member:
Larry Rudner, SN Larry Rudner, SN Larry Rudner, SN Larry Rudner, SN by David Cross, AP
Larry is the 16th member to participate in our mini-biography series. He is the
first to claim that joining the squadron
changed the direction of his life.
He was born, 1939, in Rochester, N.Y.
where he remained until high school
graduation in 1957. From high school it
was on to Purdue, a degree in electrical
engineering and meeting his future
bride, Marlene.
Larry was not a lover of Rochester, or
more particularly, its winters. In his
own words: “After graduation I went home, packed up my
worldly possessions and headed west for California and a job
with Rocketdyne”.
How many of us have worked in a situation where the final
product is something that will change history? Rocketdyne was
the main contractor for the Apollo rockets to be used in the
‘Race to the Moon’ initiated by President Kennedy. Larry was a
key participant in the design program. The rocket engines were
capable of producing one and a half million pounds of thrust
(about 50 million horsepower). Nothing of this magnitude had
ever been conceived before. His responsibility was to design a
critical part of the fuel system. We were reminded that in those
days no computers were available. All his work was done using
a Marchant mechanical calculator which some of our readers
may remember. Playing down his important role, Larry seemed
more ‘amused’ by his meeting with Werner Von Braun—they
accidentally bumped into each other in a doorway!
We should note that he and Marlene tied the
knot on the west coast—the beginning of, currently,
almost fifty years of married life. Marlene was to
play an important role in Larry’s ultimate career.
In 1965 a decision was made to escape from the
uncertainties of government contract work. He ac-
cepted a position with RCA in Memphis. From
rocket motor design he moves to designing televi-
sion sets (an engineer is an engineer!). This came to
an end when production was moved to Taiwan.
For a short time afterwards Larry, having ob-
tained his masters degree, taught electronics at
a technical institute, but his life was soon to take
an unexpected turn.
While visiting his parents who were living on Singer Island, he
happened to see an ad in the newspaper, by Pratt and Whitney,
for an Engineering Supervisor. Almost as an afterthought he
sent in his resume. To his surprise a job offer quickly followed
and a 19 year career with the famed aero engine maker began.
During this time Larry joined the squadron and quickly
applied his engineering mind to the successful completion of all
the courses leading to Senior Navigator plus teaching engine
maintenance and marine electronics. His education included
celestial navigation and a long latent fascination (back to age
10) with astronomy was revived. He was encouraged by his
friend and mentor Joe Rawlins. The two of them would spend
hours studying the night sky, some of the time at sea where
they could enjoy a 360 degree horizon unrestricted by man
made light pollution..

Six Reasons to Shop at
Meanwhile
Larry retired from
Pratt and Whit-
ney (aged 58) and
was able to devote
more time to his
interests—the
squadron, his 23’
Chris Craft, fish-
ing and stargaz-
ing. No doubt, of
course, Marlene
and the family
were also benefici-
aries of this newly
acquired leisure.
One of the re-
wards of retire-
ment was the abil-
ity to take cruises. Larry, constantly imagining he was Captain
Cook, Magellan et al could be regularly seen on deck practicing
with his sextant. Interested fellow passengers had plenty of
questions and on one occasion he was asked by the Recreation
Officer if he would give a short lecture on the art of navigating
using sun and stars. The new career was born.
Larry, buoyed by the enthusiasm his talk (followed by re-
quested repeats) seemed to generate, decided to investigate
what it would take to have a regular gig as a lecturer on cruise
ships. Agents told him that he must expand his repertoire to
include other subjects, especially the voyages of great seafaring
explorers and their relevance to the history of the cruise ship’s
passage and ports of call. Painstakingly over time he and
Marlene have put together a portfolio of about forty lectures.
2000 hours of research were needed for some of the more de-
tailed ones. Marlene operates the visual portions of the presen-
tations.
Larry and Marlene have spent as much as 270 days a year
at sea with various cruise lines. They have, for example,
crossed every ocean, ‘sailed’ the Panama Canal 51 times,
rounded Cape Horn 19 times and visited countless ports around
the globe. Their reputation brings new offers almost daily, but
now they tend to choose only the best opportunities e.g. super
luxury lines such as Regent and Silver Seas. They have earned
their spurs.
“What a wonderful, interesting life you lead”, we remarked
at the end of our interview. “Never be envious of others”
Marlene correctly responded. Why not, we thought as visions of
luxurious life aboard ship floated before us!
Larry doubts if
any of our mem-
bers can point to
the squadron as
being such a pro-
vider of life chang-
ing experience as
the one he has en-
joyed. We cannot
disagree. If you do,
let us know—you’ll
be the subject of
our next mini
biography.
Enjoying a cruise ship side trip.
This thing
really works !

Personal Enrichment Seminar Series Debut a Success “I got my money’s worth ($15) with just
one item” and “Worth much more than
the seminar fee” were some of the com-
ments heard from the ten participants
in the two 4-hour Intermediate Word
Enrichment Seminars completed 25 &
27 February. The first seminar offering
seems to have been very well received.
If you missed or were unable to attend
this seminar, but would still like to
participate in this hands-on learning
experience, it is likely that the topic
will be re-offered since four additional
participants signed up but had last
minute schedule conflicts and would
still like to take it. Email the instruc-
tor if you’d like to be put on an email
notice list for this or one of the other candidate seminar top-
ics. Based on sufficient member interest, topics of additional
seminars include: Digital Photo Processing using free software tools; Advanced Word; Excel (beginning); Intermediate PowerPoint; and PowerPoint (beginning). Additional sample content or exercises for most of these topics
was detailed on page 11 of your January 2010 Afterdeck.
Send an email note expressing your interest to make sure
you get in on the topic of your choice, or to request another
topic be considered.
The Personal Enrichment Seminar Series is an added
member benefit that takes advantage of the Squadron’s
unique educational facility, computers, and software on a non-
interference basis with our main USPS courses and seminars.
Non-members may also take the seminars, at a premium rate
--with first preference given to PBSPS members and their
families.
