From the Driver’s Seat

June 2021 by Jim Orr

Welcome back GTA! Welcome back to face to-face events. The month of May brought us the first in person monthly meeting in over a year as we met at The Crossing restaurant in Norcross. We’ve had two dart matches, one hosted by Jack and Stella Wissner, the other hosted by Catherine and Ashford Little. I believe Neal Turner won match one, and I’m not sure who won match #2. I was unable to participate in either of them, but I understand that everybody had a great time at both. I also understand that the quality of dart play was questionable at best.

Last Sunday brought the first ever, (as far as I know), GTA BBQ Cook-off at my house. (I know for certain that it was the first ever at my house.) We had lots of meat and plenty of sides – with 32 members in attendance. One great thing about hosting this event is that there were a lot of left-overs that had to be dealt with throughout this past week. It’s “kinda” like Thanksgiving leftovers only much better! I focused mostly on the meats on Sunday, but since then, I have marveled at the awesome quality of the sides. My gosh! Some of the best corn breads I have ever eaten, coleslaws, potato salads and Mac n Cheese (with lots of bacon). And BBQ sauces, ranging from Earls Alabama white sauce to people’s favorite bottled varieties. I think we may have to have two categories in the future, one for meats and one for sides. I need to start exercising to blow all of those calories and cholesterol out of my system.

All this to say, Welcome back GTA, it is great to see you all in person and I look forward to the upcoming events this summer ranging from car shows, gatherings and a few drives. Be sure to check out the calendar on your GATRIUMPH.COM web site. Please participate as you feel able, and safe – where a mask or don’t. We’ll be trying our best to have events at venues that allow for plenty of space. I hope to see many of you at the June meeting. Watch your email and the Calendar as we finalize the location.

Get out and DRIVE!

Sincerely, Jim

3rd GTA Dart Night When Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 9:30pm Where 505 Highbrook Dr NE, Atlanta, USA (map) Description Neal Turner won the last round of the GTA Dart Challenge so he is hosting round #3. 1st Grind 'N Gears Car Show When Saturday, June 5, 8:00am – 11:00am Where North Point Mall (Old Sears parking lot) 1000 North Point Cir, Alpharetta, GA Description My buddy and I have been working to setup a new Car Meetup over at Northpoint Mall in the old Sears parking lot area. We now have permission from the mall management company, and have talked with the sheriff’s office and everyone is on board! The idea was to create a “middle ground” car meetup that is not solely focused on classic cars.

The show will be the first Saturday of every month. Designed to not conflict with C&O, WORSHIP or people’s church services. Here is a link. Sign up to learn more as we role it out Grind "N Gears . Look forward to seeing y’all there.

Caffeine and Octane Cruise In When Sunday, June 6, 7:00am – 11:00am Where Perimeter Mall, 4400 Ashford Dunwoody Rd, Atlanta, GA 30346, USA (map) Description Modeled after a well-known California show, the event would be appropriately informal, with an automotively non-denominational approach. What was desired was a show that would display cars that were both new and old, foreign and domestic, bone stock and wildly modified all together in the same lot.

Sunday Car Worship When Sunday, June 6, 8:00am – 11:00am Where Target Shopping Center, at Panera Bread, 1135 Woodstock Rd, Roswell, GA 30075 Description Tired of the flashy, overpopulated C&C events? This is a quiet event with great folks who aren't afraid to drive their cars... even in the rain. Can you believe it? See you there. A reminder about this 1st Sunday gathering.

Join us and bring a friend to 'Worship' for some quiet fellowship. Worship!

Atlanta Garage Party When Friday, June 18, 8:00pm – 11:00pm Where TBD Description http://atlgarageparty.com/attend.htm The Atlanta Garage Party is a monthly social event for people who own collectable or modified cars of any condition, and work on them themselves. It takes place somewhere in the larger metro-Atlanta area on every third Friday of the month, at ~8pm. Usually it lasts to between 11pm and midnight. It is not for people who only read car magazines and watch Top Gear, or collect cars that others work on. If you are one of those, please keep that a secret. If you would like to host one of these parties, then you need to be a person who attends them, and has gotten to know others in the group. Although exceptions are sometimes made, the intent is to have these parties in people's home garages, not at their businesses. If you, your spouse, children, and family pets spend more time at your place of business than at your house, or if the two have kinda merged, or if your business is just cool beyond words (Bryan Fuller), then you have a good chance of hosting there. We would like to meet your spouse and children and let them know that you have an enabling support group around you that you can fall back on when you are disowned by them.

Please feel free to invite any males that fit this description, and any females whatsoever. Very closely-supervised children can come also. Please

The Seven Year Hitch – Part I By Robin Thomson

My 1962 TR4 has sat without its beating heart for over 7 years. The paperwork for my engine machining shows this project started in March 2014. If my memory serves me well, I had only driven the car three times after buying it, before deciding to fix the slight oil leak from the front timing cover seal. To my dismay, on removing the cover, I noticed the woodruff key slot in the end of the crankshaft was damaged beyond repair, and my realization that a new crankshaft would be required!

I decided that ‘if I am replacing the crankshaft, I should really go the whole hog and do a complete rebuild. I started well and found a replacement machined crankshaft on eBay. I also stripped the engine down in no time at all, ready for the parts to be sent for cleaning and machining, …..then a whole load of Life got in the way: a wedding, a baby, two house moves, job change, and not forgetting Covid 19!

Now in 2021, at long last, the project is moving again, with much gratitude to Mike Hurst who has been kindly cajoling me to get my finger out, reviewing parts purchased, providing shopping lists, inspecting work done and acting as ringmaster for the engine build event.

Preparation

I did a reasonable job of labeling and bagging all my engine parts when I stripped the engine, but realized I still had boxes of bagged parts that had never been cleaned. My evening entertainment for the week before the engine build was entirely

10

Page 11: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

spent cleaning every part, nut and bolt and labeling each with the Moss numbers from the parts diagrams. I then used the same labeling system for all the new parts and am so glad I spent the time doing this. As organized as I was, there was still the odd bolt that was in the wrong bag. I also had a small bag of miscellaneous to choose from.

I would recommend anyone stripping an engine, to clean parts as you take them off, bag and label with the 2 digit Moss numbers. Also highlighting parts in the catalogue with parts you need to purchase will save you time down the road. It is easy to forget something.

I was also advised to pressure wash the block, dry with air compressor and spray with WD40. I duly did this and it worked well, despite my reservations about water sitting in it somewhere.

The Troops Arrive

I was looking forward to the GA Triumph pit crew arriving both with excitement, and a little trepidation, as I was worried that one missing part could stop the day in its tracks. Thankfully, I was only short of 1 bolt on the day, which was quickly purchased at Ace hardware.

The crew for the day were Mike Hurst, Joe Garcia, Tom Brand, and Jeff Johnson, also acting as film

director for the documentary video he is making to assist his own rebuild.

Mike also brought his special recipe Mexican cornbread with him to give us all a little pep to get us started.

The first items on the agenda were the liners and figure 8 copper seals. These particular items were a challenge for a number or reasons, even before the build started.

Firstly Moss did not pack the parts properly and the gaskets arrived looking like a corkscrew, as did the replacements!

11

Page 12: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021

The second chal lenge was meet ing the specification of 3 to 5 thou for the height the liners protrude from the block with seals installed. This was initially a challenge for us as we were measuring a few thou high.

We now know that the steel fig 8 gaskets supplied with the liners are 16 thou thick, the ‘better’ copper fig 8 gaskets are 19 thou thick. The fig 8 copper

gaskets also have a tendency to twist around the sleeves when they are inserted, so can cause poor measurements. The method Don Ewing at Ewing Automotive machine service was advised to use (by Rick Cline) was to measure the block and liners dry and without gaskets. Measure the depth of the liners below the deck and add the thickness of the fig 8 seals to the measurement to calculate the protrusion. We need to assume the soft copper gaskets will compress, so using the steel gasket thickness I would say is the correct method. In my case, making sure the mating surface in the block was very well cleaned was enough to give us the correct protrusion. We were relieved to get the bolts and washers in place to hold the liners in place for this first stage.

Out next challenge was getting the camshaft to slide into place and turn freely. It turned out the holes in the camshaft bearings for the locating bolts were not aligned perfectly and the bolts were pushing the bearings against the camshaft. There was discussion that the block would need to go back to the machine shop, with perhaps the need to strip out the parts we had already fitted. After much discussion and scratching of heads we decided to try simply drilling the holes out.

12

Page 13: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021

I must admit feeling a little nervous about this, but teamwork solved the problem and the camshaft spun nicely afterwards.

The remaining parts such as pistons, crankshaft etc all went smoothly, with clearances measured using plasti-gage getting much praise, which was pleasing to hear.

The sealing block was Heli coiled by Mike to make better than new, and fitting of the small cork T pieces and pressing the sealing block into place was a challenge. Thankfully, Joe has the technique of rolling, somewhat forcefully, the part into place after his recent builds.

So part I is complete, with the bottom end done.

Part II should get the top end and timing done, although this would not have gone far had Mike not realized the head gasket I had bought was a standard one. A new oversized one for my oversized sleeves and pistons now bought and delivered. Anyone needing a head gasket?

(to be continued)

Dart Night Returns!!! By Jack Wissner

After a long Covid Winter (whole year actually), it was great to get back together without having to log into my computer. Zoom was fine, but not anybody's idea of how the Georgia Triumph Association likes to partake in an “event". The best part of that was looking at everybody's Covid hairdos. Yeah. So... Dart Night returns!!!

In an abundance of caution we did it outdoors. That's suppose to be safer. Follow the science I think. Stella and I jumped at the opportunity to do it in our garden. It is a pleasant place. Sort of English which aligns with our common

interest in English stuff. Hey, Stella is English, so I have English street cred.

Oh yeah... darts. I could not hit the broad side of a barn with a dart. I wish I could, but, ask me if I had less fun. I've got pictures!!!

Events like this are what makes this club great. Getting together with fun people on a beautiful night (we lucked out), sharing stories, great food and an activity. It does not get any simpler than that. It does not get any better than that!!!

Battle for the Porcine Pig By Jim Orr

The first battle for the GTA Porcine Pig was waged on Sunday May 23rd at the home of Jim and Terri Orr. The day was HOT for May, in the

low 90’s and in keeping with our promise to accommodate social distancing, the event was staged indoors and out – with the food being

presented inside and dining tables, coolers etc in the carport – the shady carport.

As advertise, the event began at 4:00 though a couple members arrived early to help shuffle cars and sample some hoppy beverages. Car by car dish by dish, the entrants began to arrive. This year we had lots of pulled pork shoulder, AKA pork butts, (I’m not sure where that confusion began but that is not the debate here). We had two chicken BBQ presentations along with Brunswick stew and many side dishes. While intended to compliment the various BBQ meats; the side dishes might have won the Porcine Pig had we judged them as well! Maybe next year, we’ll have a side dish category.

There were votes (2) awarded to any BBQ dish that arrived in a Triumph, with the intention to lure said Triumphs out of the garage and onto the road. Did I mention that it was hot? At around 91 degrees at 4 PM, we were probably fortunate to have 6 Triumphs in attendance, mostly TR6’s and one very saweeeet Herald convertible.

I started the day fully intending to be the event photographer but some how, I stepped into a time warp and the event was over before I snapped a shot. I’m pretty sure aliens had something to do with it. Any photos included with this article are the work of others.

The attendees were treated to a great variety of foods, I dare say that none went away hungry. The votes were tallied and…. (insert drum roll )… First runner up was awarded to new member, Steven Webster and his pulled pork shoulder-butt, Steve was awarded a book about a Pig going for a Drive – everybody needs a book like that – it’s still at my house. I’m sure he’s going crazy trying to remember where he left that great book!

First place and owner of the very first GTA Porcine Pig award was Jeff Rountree and his quite tasty pork butt-shoulder. To say that butt

had more bark than butt would be an accurate statement – it was quite tasty!

Congratulations to our first two winners of the GTA BBQ competition! I hope that we can do this again in about a year. Meanwhile, if anybody wants to practice and drop off a taste of their next entry during the upcoming year, I’ll be happy to give you my opinion of it’s worthiness. Note that portion size is a big factor, so bring plenty!

GTA DART NIGHT #2 By Ashford Little

You can say that it was Jack & Stella Wissner’s fault. Dart night #1 for 2021 had taken place a couple of weeks earlier. No, neither Jack nor Stella was responsible for the amazing lack of talent when it comes to dart tossing that most of us posses; we

own that talent all on our own. Jack & Stella had taken dart night food up several degrees. No longer were there a few bags of chips and beverages, but a very tasty BBQ’d swine and fixings. So, I couldn’t swing by the 7-11 on my home and hope

to present a decent spread. I didn’t need to one-up the Wissners, but I had to be in the ballpark.

So, on Thursday, May 20th, I hosted the 2nd GTA Dart Night. Once again, participants helped to fill the tables with sides and deserts including Frank Polack’s flan. Yes please! I served up a decent pot of chicken & sausage jambalaya which seemed to go over pretty well.

However, as much as I tried to delay the inevitable darts eventually started to fly and the game was on. There really is no point in recounting the ebbs and flows of the match. The early leaders rarely win, and sometimes those bringing up the rear do well. I was fairly ecstatic when I got down to 2 and only need to double 1s to win. My strategy seemed perfect… just aim for the twenty and surely I would win. Well, that didn’t happen, but a few rounds later, Neal, one of two Brits in attendance showed off his dartmanship and claimed the victory for dart night #2.

As is often the case in sports, rivalries emerge over time and the GTA is no different. No, I’m not talking about Joe vs. Tony or Stella (I was rooting for ya Stella!), but rather an ITP (inside the perimeter) vs. OTP (Outside the perimeter) gang. Basically, us ITP folks don’t want to drive to south Chattanooga to Glenn or Tony’s place, and they feel the same way about us ITP people. Luckily for the 2nd round the ITP prevailed. We look forward to seeing what Neal has in store for us on Thursday, June 3rd. Folks should plan on arriving around 7 p.m. and darts flight a bit later.

PS: Tony shows us what we should have been aiming at.

TR3A fuel filter By Joe Garcia

In 2018, I was roaming the Cumming fairgrounds with fellow GTA'ers and stumbled onto a vendor trying to unload bits and pieces that antique "hit and miss" engines might need for restoration. Well, that's ME! My 60 TR3A hits and misses like the best of them...heck, I should have demo'ed my crank starting at the show!

Mike Hurst suggested that I acquire several cylindrical metal fuel filters (not the cheapie plastic clear ones) and a fuel shut off valve for my ride. (Yup, a plastic cheapie one). About $5 later, I had a project to do!

Issue: There is NO room between the fuel inlet pipe and the fuel pump to stuff in these precious finds!  Our Earl Ferguson said that his TR2 came with a frame mounted fuel cut-off (maybe some TR3's too?) My $500 1967 purchased "newer" 1960 TS81089L TR3A didn't come with a fuel filter or a fuel shut off valve. That little golden screen mesh above the fuel pump sight glass (which Moss can't get) was good enough so quit trying to fix something that ain't broken or needed. The Earl has spoken.

Now what?  I stashed the fairground parts along with my other TR spare parts treasures and that was that.

Fast Covid-19 forward to today...

I am sure I am not the only GTA'er that internet surf's several Triumph sites...and there it was!..My solution! Some clever TR3 owner installed a steel "S" fuel pump inlet so to install a fuel filter by making more room by shifting the fuel pump inlet port towards the firewall!  Well I can do that too...or so I thought.

Since Mike Hurst got me into this mess, I went over to his house to bend an "S" with his tube bender.  Have you ever tried to bend steel fuel line?  It's crazy stiff and kinks just looking at it.

Mike and I tried a little heat and promptly melted his pot metal tube kinker.  I bought Mike a replacement $16 Auto Zone tube kinker which didn't work any better. We finally made a good enough "S" and I went home happy.

Fooie! The darn "S" was too big!

Fueling up the White Knight for Sunday's Panera bread Worship, I went looking for a better, tighter

bends, tube kinker.  After several frustrating stops and calls (I called Slack, Eagle and Oakwood machine shops and even a plumber!...no joy..nobody bends anymore!). I went to Harbor Freight and Bingo! A $9 tube bender that works! (Tried it out in the store).

I carefully bent a smaller "S" and installed both the fuel cut off and fuel filter in the car.  They won't  rattle against my steering shaft and my original fuel tank can rust away happily ever after.

Bring a Trailer Auctions By Jim Doran

I recently decided to sell my beloved 1980 Spitfire 1500 after 6 years of ownership, though a Triumph in my garage again will happen sometime in the

future. A lot of factors went into this decision but once made the question was “what’s the best venue to sell the car?”. I thought of using the GTA

21

Page 22: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

classifieds, Craigslist’s, eBay, Autotrader Classics or Bring a Trailer. Except for eBay, using these other marketplaces I would need to come up with an asking price for the car and I had no idea what it was worth. Some of the older round tail Spitfires were commanding a premium price in the marketplace, but newer rubber bumper cars were laggards. Mine was what I considered a “survivor” in the sense that it had the original paint, was rust free and was not modified except for the addition of a set of Minator wheels. I decided to go with BaT since they catered to the “car nut” crowd interested in a variety of high quality cars. Once I decided on BaT I had to agree not to list the car elsewhere.

The first step in the process was deciding on which level BaT service was best for me. BaT levels of service. I went with the Classic level ($99) and decided to take my own photos. BaT Photo Guide. I took over 150+ photos which was a lot of work but paid off in answering a lot of potential questions and making it easier for the potential buyer to access the car. I also did three (3) videos: cold start, driving, and hot start, and merged them into one (1) 3 minute video. I hope my efforts demonstrated to the potential buyers that my thoroughness in the presentation process translated to the quality of the car I was presenting.

Keep in mind that I did all this work before BaT said they would even list the car. With over 60 new auctions a day, they turn away a lot of ho-hum cars or poorly presented cars. After registering with BaT, something you would need to do if you wanted to comment on a listing, bid on a listing or sell a car, I began the listing process. After filling out a questionnaire, including a reserve price (which is optional), I dropped all the photos into an image upload box located on the form. I used a link to my Google photo account for the video and be sure to mark it “public”. I hit send and waited. After a few days, I received an email from Andrew, my auction specialist, saying that the Spitfire had been accepted. Andrew would arrange the photos, write the copy and review all the

documents. He had a few questions but overall this part of the process went well. He did tell me that due to the volume of auctions, it would 2 to 3 weeks before the auction would go live. The last part of the process was my review and final approval.

Once the auction was underway, I monitored the comments responding as needed. I added some additional photos 3 days in just to create more buzz. By the way, the buyer pays 5% of the sale price or a minimum of $250 or a maximum of $5,000. If you have followed any BaT auctions, you know that the seller has to have thick skin as the comments can get a bit snarky. The idea is to get the car sold at the highest price, so the seller needs to remain diplomatic.

I was pleased with the results. I had the cash in my account within 3 hours of the auction’s close via a bank to bank funds transfer. The seller chose to use BaT Shipping service and that went very smoothly. Going back to my debate regarding the best venue to sell the Spitfire, I would have probably listed it for a little over my reserve on Craigslist’s or Autotrader Classics. As it turned out, I would have left money on the table. My auction

Until I find my next Triumph . . . . . . .

Argyll GT: The (over)ambitious British supercar that time forgot

By Richard Dredge; 29 April 2021 Copied from the Hagerty Website and reformatted for this newsletter.

Editor’s note: Hang with it, there is a connection.

Magic Car Pics/Argyll

Lochgilphead is a small fishing port on the west coast of Scotland and you’ve probably never heard of it. But Bob Henderson aimed to change that in 1976 when, with the backing of rally driver Andrew Smith, he launched a supercar intended to show the men and women at Maranello and Sant’Agata a thing or two.

Called the Argyll Turbo GT and powered by a twin-turbo Rover 3.5-liter V-8, this rakish glassfiber-bodied two-seater was intended to be a Ferrari alternative, capable of 160 mph but without the high running costs thanks to the fitment of mass-market oily bits.

When it was launched in spring 1976 there was talk of the Argyll GT costing £6500, which was slightly less than an Alfa Romeo Montreal or an entry-level  Lotus Eclat, and two-thirds of the cost of a  Lamborghini Urraco  or  Maserati Merak. The problem was that the Scottish sportster featured kit car build quality and awkward styling, plus there was no dealer network and no heritage.

Actually, that last point was not strictly true. The original Argyll Motors was founded at the turn of the last century and survived until 1932, and along the way it came up with a host of innovations for its luxury cars. So when Henderson and Smith

23

Page 24: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

decided to revive the marque more than 40 years later it made some sense; the U.K.’s Motor magazine was certainly impressed when it drove the sole prototype in autumn 1976, claiming that “the handling was something of a revelation.”

Magic Car Pics/Argyll

Unfortunately Henderson’s day job of running Minnow-Fish carburetors and undertaking turbocharging work meant that resources were stretched very thin, and development work ended up taking no less than seven years. As a result the production-ready Argyll GT wasn’t unveiled until October 1983, by which point it had become a 2+2 and the price had shot up to as much as £38,000; a six-cylinder Jaguar XJ-S cost half as much, while a Ferrari 308 GTB was ten grand less. Meanwhile the Argyll featured Datsun Cherry rear lights, Triumph suspension, Morris Marina door handles, a Volvo 240 dashboard, plus parts from all sorts of other then-defunct mass-market cars.

Even worse, in standard form the twin-turbo Rover V-8 had been downgraded to a naturally aspirated 2664cc “Douvrin” V-6—a joint development between Citroën, Peugeot and Renault—which sent its unspecified amount of power to the rear wheels via a Renault 30 transaxle. Buyers could opt for

their V-6 to be turbocharged and there was still a Rover V-8 option in naturally aspirated or turbocharged forms.

Magic Car Pics/Argyll

When  Motor tested the relaunched Argyll GT in autumn 1984 it wasn’t impressed by the design, build quality, grip levels or price, but the driving experience was a revelation with superb steering, handling, ride and performance. Henderson claimed that he could make one GT each month, so a dozen a year, each one tailored to the customer’s needs and wallet with items such as air-conditioning, power steering and an automatic gearbox all available.

The Argyll GT was officially available until the early 1990s, and while an array of prototypes were made, including one with Lancia Beta power (a turbocharged Saab engine was offered but none were built), it seems that very few customer cars were ever delivered. Henderson has always remained tight-lipped about power outputs and production figures; the latter are assumed to be (low) single figures. So much for putting Lochgilphead on the map.

Saturday 1st June 1935 86 years ago Compulsory testing was brought in for all British drivers who started driving on or after 1 April 1934. The driving test in 1935 wasn’t much different to how it is today. There was no theory test, but learner drivers were quizzed on their knowledge of the Highway Code before the practical exam started. A reporter from Autocar magazine was sent along to try out the test in 1935 and report back to their readers on what to expect. The 1930s driving test included an emergency stop, hill start, three-point turn, vehicle and hand signalling, parking and number plate reading. The driving test lasted around 30 minutes and, according to the DVSA, the pass rate was 63%.“The test is not easy,” said Autocar. “A very good knowledge of the Highway Code seems to be necessary, and it must be applied to one’s driving. Captain Stuart [the examiner] stressed that the main requirement in the test was safety. “How the driver treats his car does not matter so much. Crashing the gears will not influence the tester, so long as it does not affect safety.”

Tuesday 6th June 1961 59 years ago Ray Barfield drove his Aston Martin DB3S to win in the 6-hour 'Le Mans' race, winning from Bob MacDowall in a TR3A and Vic Johnson in an Austin Healey. Barfield set a race record distance of 187 laps, about 385 miles. David McKay drove a Renault Dauphine Gordini in the race and was highly critical of the event. Strangely, this didn't prevent him coming out of retirement for a one-off appearance four years later.

Thursday 14th June 1984 36 years ago British Leyland (BL) announced the privatisation of Jaguar.

Friday 18th June 1965 55 years ago The UK government announced it would introduce a blood alcohol limit for drivers. In January 1966 the new Road Safety Bill was introduced. It set a limit of 80mg of alcohol in 100cc of blood and it became an offence to drive when over this limit.

Thursday 19th June 1969 51 years ago The 2,000,000th Mini was delivered. Over 1,250,000 of the cars delivered since 1959 were standard Austin and Morris types. Vans were the next most popular variant with 339,985 and the various Cooper models amounted to nearly 115,000 units.

Friday 19th June 1987 33 years ago Britain’s most persistent learner driver, Mrs Git Kaur Randhawa of Hayes, Middlesex finally passed her driving test at the 48th attempt after more than 330 lessons.

Friday 30th June 1950 70 years ago The first four-seat Triumph Mayflower, noted for its razor-edge styling, rolled off the production line. The 1.25-litre, 4-cylinder, side-valve engine was capable of 65 mph and cost £374 (plus £104 18s 4d purchase tax). The Mayflower used a version of the pre-war Standard Flying Ten's side-valve engine updated by having an aluminium cylinder head and single Solex carburettor. The engine developed 38 bhp (28 kW) at 4200 rpm. The 3-speed gearbox, with column shift, came from the Standard Vanguard and had synchromesh on all the forward ratios. There was independent suspension at the front using coil springs and

telescopic dampers, but a solid axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs, also based on the Vanguard's design, was at the rear. Lockheed hydraulic brakes were fitted. The Mayflower was the first car with unitary construction to be manufactured either by Standard or by the Triumph company that existed before Standard bought its assets. The body was designed by Leslie Moore, chief body designer of Mulliners of Birmingham with input from Standard's Walter Belgrove. The body shells were built by Fisher and Ludlow at Castle Bromwich, Birmingham. The Mayflower had traditional "razor edge" styling similar to that of the Triumph Renown imitating the style then still used by Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars. Standard's managing director Sir John Black believed this would be especially appealing to the American market. One advantage of the car's upright styling was that it could seat four people in comfort despite its small size, although there were complaints about the rear seat being constrained by the rear axle and being too narrow as a result. A Mayflower tested by British magazine The Motor in 1950 had a top speed of 62.9 mph (101.2 km/h) and could accelerate from 0–50 mph (80 km/h) in 26.6 seconds. A fuel consumption of 28.3 miles per imperial gallon (10.0 L/100 km; 23.6 mpg‑US) was recorded. The test car cost £505 including taxes.

While attending the January meeting, I heard Hermann’s plea for material for the monthly newsletter and my initial thought was “just how desperate for material are they”. After thinking about it for a while, I thought that some folks might find it somewhat entertaining if I were to spell out some of my thoughts pertaining to the acquisition of some Little British Cars (LBC’s) I have owned in my life.

I tossed around in my head just how to go about attacking this little project when it occurred to me that all of my feelings and motivations about ownership of these little bits of automotive nostalgia could be boiled down to just one simple thing…backseats. Now, as some of you may have already so astutely deduced, being the above average intellectuals that all British car owners are, these cars don’t have backseats. Ah, very good my young padawan! (I hope you guys have seen at least one of the Star Wars movies, otherwise that makes no sense.) Now, before all you Stag and Herald owners out there get all in a tizzy, for the purposes of this story, those back seats aren’t much better considering the topic. (Works for me. ed) You’ll figure it out in a bit, just keep reading. Oh well, back to our story. Perhaps before I go further, a little family history is in order.

I grew up in the ‘70’s in rural Upstate New York, the youngest of five children to a Presbyterian minister and his wife. Being the son of a minister, I spent many a Sunday morning wedged in between my older siblings at church watching my father stir the hearts of the congregation with stories of faith and reverence. Living in a rural community I was surrounded by a sense of community and moral fiber. Everything about my youth was steeped in the traditions of family values and moral character. Then, of course, in a moment of Galtonian (Englishman, by the way) “Nature vs. Nurture”, all of that flew out the window with puberty. Hormones have a terrible way of causing one to turn a deaf ear to reason, common sense, and any hint of community pressure or parental guidance.

Now, you wonder what any of this has to do with the topic at hand. Well, when gripped in the ravages of blind hormonal bliss, ones opinions of certain cars takes on a rather slanted and narrow outlook. As a firm believer, at the time, of the ancient belief that “when it comes to relationships with the opposite sex, women needed a reason, men just needed a place”, I looked at these little bitty cars from across the pond with confused disdain. I just couldn’t see the value of a car with no back seat! Why on earth would someone drive a vehicle that held no promise of, for lack of a better term, hormonal fulfillment? Hey, I never said I was in any way chivalrous at the ripe old age of 17. Not that I am any more so now! Now, being 6’2”, can you understand why Hermann’s rumble seat in his 1800 Roadster doesn’t really qualify as a “useful” back seat in this case? Perhaps some little 5 foot nothing English guy might take issue with this statement but for me…enough said.

Anyway, this sort of summed up my experience with LBC’s until I started dating the lady who would later come to be my lovely wife. At this point in my life I had established myself in an institute of higher learning…OK it was Georgia State, for what that’s worth. Not exactly Harvard but hey, I was on a budget. I had an apartment and was, at least somewhat, self reliant. At this point it was all about the image.

I came across an ’81 Spitfire 1500 on a dealer's used car lot and thought it might be fun to tool around in. I thought it would give me that somewhat exotic, foreign look to the ladies. At least that is what my egocentric, somewhat chauvinist attitude told me. Anyway, I bought the car and my girlfriend and I had a great time in it. Well, let me re-phrase that. We had a great time driving it. Hey, it was just the two of us, I really wasn’t interested in romantic nights curled up in the backseat of a car any more (that was what the apartment was for after all) so it was just an intimate way of getting around. Well, as we all know, spending more time under the car than in it became somewhat of a nuisance. The daily little things that come up with these cars become quite inconvenient when you are commuting to downtown Atlanta for classes every day. On a side note, however, I can honestly say that in the span of a red light I could remove the fuel pump, re-seat the seals and reinstall it before the light turned green! Necessity truly is the mother of invention.

After getting rid of the Spit my interest in LBC’s waned to the point of forgetting all about them. Marriage, and eventually children put a whole new perspective on life. Now it was all about finding the best sale on baby food and diapers. Romantic trips down winding country roads were replaced with frantic, panicked drives to the emergency room, convinced that the tooth the child just swallowed would get lodged somewhere inside and fester into a cancerous mass that would kill our perfect little angel. Somehow sports cars were replaced with mini-vans and the most important option was whether it had a DVD player in the back to keep the little darlings entertained. Once again, just like in my youth, the whole world revolved around the happenings in the back seat…just that this time it was for entirely different reasons than just a decade or so before!

Well, fast forward another decade or so. I am now firmly, defiantly and proudly planted in my mid-life crisis and it is time to relive those years of my youth. Back to the days when there wasn’t a care in the world, other than getting caught doing all those things that really should have killed you at the time but you were immortal so it never crossed your mind. These were the times that my wife and I fondly refer to as “BC”…before children! So I am surfing around the internet one day and come across this picture of an old TR6. The bug hits again! The search then begins for the perfect car. (You and I both know there is no such thing, but it is nice to dream.) After some months I come across a ’69 TR6 in Alabama that looks to fit my requirements quite well. Now, the only problem is how to sell it to she who must be obeyed. It certainly isn’t practical. It’s not nearly as reliable as our other vehicles, etc., etc. How am I going to pull this off? Then it dawns on me. A broad grin crosses my face as I realize just how to make this a no-brainer. That evening I pull up the pictures on the internet and let her brood over it. She runs down all the reasons why it makes no sense to buy such a vehicle. This borders on a tirade until she asks, in a fit of quiet rage, “With no back seat, we can’t even get the kids in that thing!” Then it begins to dawn on her and I see the calm of understanding begin to emerge on her face. After a few moments she just grins and says “Get it!”.

So, the point of this little tale finally comes full circle. Our lives are so often a matter of the perspective that we bring to daily events and these perspectives change with age and experience. The very feature of these little cars that made it a deal breaker to me at 17 suddenly becomes the deal maker at 47! Back seats…it’s what it’s all about baby. Then and now.

Grind-N-Gears Monthly Car MeetupGrind 'N Gears Meet Up June 5, 2021

SAT, JUN 5 AT 6 AM EDT Grind 'N Gears Meet Up June 5, 2021 Alpharetta, GA

My buddy and I have been working to setup a new Car Meetup over at Northpoint Mall in the old Sears parking lot area. We now have permission from the mall management company, and have talked with the sheriff’s office and everyone is on board! The idea was to create a “middle ground” car meetup that is not as large as C&O yet not focused on classic cars. Trying to be respectful to the hard work Steve put into WORSHIP and not competing with it.

The show will be the first Saturday of every month. Designed to not conflict with C&O, WORSHIP or people’s church services. The opening day will be Saturday June 5th. It would be much appreciated if we could get a great turnout from the GA Triumph Association - www.gatriumph.com! I of course will definitely have mine there. We are also talking with the Cobra Club, VW club, and several others. Here is a link. Sign up to learn more as we role it out. Look forward to seeing y’all there.

2021 6-Pack TRials

SEP 30, 2021 AT 4 PM – OCT 3, 2021 AT 12 PM Like all of you, we have been following the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the country. While it is reasonable to expect the country will be "open" come this fall, we don't think it is prudent for the club to assume the additional liability involved with a large gathering of individuals until we are certain there is a vaccine or at least a treatment. Therefore, TRials 2020 is delayed until September 30 - Oct 3, 2021. For those that have made hotel reservations, please handle your own cancellations. We will return deposit checks to those that have already sent them in. Once we have the new dates contracted we will update the website and Facebook page.

In the Pits with Barry Rosenberg

It is a shame that products sold as being the best and having hundreds of posts about how good; actually turn out to be junk. Last month I talked about using some POR engine paint. It sucks. First, it wiped off in some places when cleaning a little oil of the engine. Then, it discolored when the engine ran hot. Yes, I said my newly rebuilt engine ran hot.

It had installed the original thermostat during the rebuild, after we tested it in boiling water and watched it open. I like to install a blanking disc and no thermostat in new engines until the first reservice. Then I install a 160 degree unit. This time, we read the supercharger instructions and they said use a 185 degree unit and that was what we had.

Also in my defense, the temperature gauge; that I was told had been tested in boiling water and it had worked, was in fact not working. So, what happened? My normal practice with a new engine is to test drive after running in the new cam/lifter combo; reservicing the engine by torquing the head ( I have never had the bolts be so loose after 20 minutes of running as I did with these ARP studs) and adjusting the valves; giving it a close once over for any visual problems. I take it out and run it for a few minutes making sure it is running good; then, I get it to 65 mph in 4th gear and back off letting it coast down to 35 mph. Then I accelerate staying in 4th back to 65 and repeating the process about 12 times.

This time, after only about 12 miles, it started sounding like the supercharger was coming apart. Still being several miles from home, I put the car in neutral and let it coast down the hills and things got quite again. I slipped it back in gear and drove home, slowly. As soon as I got to the shop, I opened the bonnet and shot the thermostat

housing with an infrared temp gun. 232 degrees! That is hot and the gauge had barely moved.

I let it cool down and did another torque of the head bolts and again found about 1/4 turn of each nut. I did a compression check and it was the same as before, 155 to 160. The car cranked well and appeared to run fine. It went home. But it was to return days later running very poorly.

This time a quick compression check showed a bad gasket between cylinders # 2 & 3. With a compression gauge in #2, pressure blew out #3 and vice versa. No question the gasket was bad. Out comes the Evan’s waterless coolant and off came the head. It was not blown as bad as I expected but is definitely was bad. Unfortunately, we did not have another gasket nor could we find one locally.

I cleaned the surfaces and checked for warpage with an expensive Snap-On straight edge. The head and block were flat! Good. I checked the valves and springs and everything looked good. We ordered a head gasket set Friday afternoon from a CA company, overnight. You would think that meant Saturday delivery. You would be wrong, almost $80 overnight fees and it came Monday afternoon, early afternoon.

So, here is something else you need to check closer before using, head gaskets. We looked closely at the bad one and noticed the fire ring was not consistent around the cylinders. Here is a picture. Notice the area between the cylinders, very narrow isn’t it. The distorted fire ring is visible. Also note the small circle area that is just about into the cylinder. This is a factory pressed in place brass plug that has recessed into the head. It did not quite clear level with the head decking.

45

Page 46: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021

We looked at the new gasket and found the same thing. We had two new ones so we picked the one that looked the most consistent. It was treated with Permatex High Tack gasket goop. This was suggested to me by the tech department at Mr Gasket who makes most of our gaskets now days.

I did not use the ARP small head bolt washer but installed larger diameter MGB type washers. I did not use the lower torque figure suggested by ARP but went back to factory specs. And I installed a blanking sleeve in place of the thermostat. Now the engine is built closer to my way. We tested the temp gauge in boiling water and this time it was not working. It did move just a schosh (tiny bit).

After filtering the coolant and changing the oil and filter (read the end of this article about a warning about oil filters), we ran the engine for a few minutes, let it reach operating temp for awhile then shut it off and let it cool overnight. The next day, I checked the head torque and found no movement in the nuts. Test drive went well, although the supercharger still sounds bad to me and I let the owner listen to it thru a stethoscope.

The supercharger has a special oil container that uses Marvel Mystery oil to lube the internals thru a small vacuum tube. There is a very sensitive adjustment knob to set the oil flow. It calls for one drop every 4 to 6 seconds and this is visible thru a small sight glass. The smallest adjustment one way

or the other makes a huge, 2 to 3 second difference.

Problem with this is; the rebuilt original Holley carb seems to drop it’s float every so often causing a very rich mixture. This can wash away the little quantity of oil lubricating the internals and causing future damage or shorter life of the supercharger. The person who rebuilt the supercharger and carb will be notified and asked what should be done.

Before anyone asks, I did not charge for my time to replace the gasket. Was it my fault, I do not think so. The owner paid for the parts and we both worked on the head. In the future, I will NEVER, repeat NEVER let anyone direct my building anything. I am still willing to work with customers who want to learn but it will be done my way and only my way.

Look back at some of the problems with this rebuild and I cannot guarantee it would not happen with me running the entire show. There were problems with the machine work; the boring of the block not fitting the piston. The parts; rings, original head gasket, pushrods, spring spacers (could be on the machine shop as he installed the new guides which I do not like), thermostat and the new first head gasket. The second oil filter although it was faulty, will work fine on this car. There is an oil leak at the rear of the oil pan that I will take care of because the pan gasket set was not one with the uprated rear pan seal. I have one on the way as I write this.

So, what is wrong with the oil filter? First, it is not a Wix or NAPA Gold. It is a K&N supplied by the owner. Several years ago, we took a Wix and K&N apart and compared the internals. The Wix had a lot more filtering element and a better quality of materials inside. So why pay more for less? The other problem was the anti-drain back seal inside the filter.

Take any spin on oil filter and look at the circle of small holes around the center hole. Oil comes

46

Page 47: Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 THE TRUMPET...2. Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021 Southside Report The next Southside Monthly Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 3, 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Volume 37, Issue 06 June 2021

from the pump, pushes into the filter past this seal and goes into the engine thru the center hole. If you look carefully, you will see the seal is centered in the housing. Several K&Ns I have seen are not centered. If your filter screws up from the bottom of the housing, this will not make any difference.

But, on a engine like late MGBs where the filter is screwed down on top of the housing, hot oil can drain out of the filter back thru the pump. Every time you crank your engine, you have to fill the filter before any oil gets to your bearings. If it has been several days between starts, you are starting your engine “dry”. No oil on the bearings. I know of a MGB engine that ruined it’s bearing from this.

His filter was sent back to K&N where they admitted it was faulty. They did not even send a free filter. I have sent pictures of this problem to K&N and have not had a reply as I write this. Look at the picture and you can see the red seal at the 2 to3 o’clock position but none at the 7 to 8 position.

Well the car has gone home again and should be off to a show in CA. soon. On to the next project!

Hope to see ya’ll somewhere soon. Be safe and shoot up with the vaccine. Yes you may feel bad the second day after the second shot but you will get your ID card proving you have been vaccinated. You might need this in the future; even though you need almost no proof to vote.
